How Nigeria is Switching From Oil to EVs
Épisode 4
lundi 31 mars 2025 • Durée 24:12
Michael Agbor says that when Nigerians ask: ‘Can you drive an EV in the rain?’ I show them videos of EVs plowing through 1-meter floods!"
There’s no better marketing tool than showing confidence in what you sell.
In this episode of The Africa EV Show, Njenga Hakeenah engages with Michael Agbor, the General Manager of EV World Nigeria, which offers 360-degree EV vehicle consultancy.
The sister company, Electric Mobility Center, sells EVs and offers potential customers an EV subsidy and financial options in partnership with local institutions.
Agbor explains:
-
How Nigeria is moving from EV skepticism to increased adoption with 5,000+ EVs now on the road!
-
The Chinese EV brands dominating Nigeria’s market including BYD, NETA, and pre-owned Teslas
-
Free charging stations, financing hurdles, and why Nigerians hate car loans
-
The truth about Nigeria’s "customs duty-free" EV policy (and why it’s hard to claim)
-
Local assembly vs. imports – Why full EV manufacturing is still years away

The State of EVs in East Africa: Challenges & Opportunities
Épisode 3
mardi 25 mars 2025 • Durée 38:24
Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania combined have an estimated 15,000 EVs on the road with two wheelers dominating the market at more than 90 per cent of the total.
Focusing on the three East African countries, the discussion analyzes the capabilities of off-grid power to handle the shift to electric mobility and the policies shaping the industry.
The conversation also looks at local EV manufacturing as the key to making e-mobility mainstream.
Uganda plans to install 3,000 public charging stations and 10,000 fast chargers while Tanzania is still dominated by lead-acid batteries for the two wheelers creating an opportunity for a robust EV adoption push.
Kenya’s EV scene remains robust but does this give it an edge in EV adoption in the region?
This week, Njenga Hakeenah, hosts Tom Courtright, the research director at Africa E-mobility Alliance which focuses on EVs in Africa.

Solar Taxi Solving Adoption Challenges in Ghana as Chinese EVs Gain Popularity
Épisode 2
mardi 18 mars 2025 • Durée 22:46
In Ghana, a fascinating company that started back in 2019 when EV tech was still very new came up with an ingenious idea to get around the power problems for their EVs.
This company, Solar Taxi, imported a bunch of low-cost Chinese solar panels to charge a fleet of EV taxis in Ghana built using components sourced from China and India. It was an idea way ahead of its time.
Today, Solar Taxi sells some EVs that are locally assembled- including e-scooters and two-wheelers. The company also recycles and repurposes end-of-life EV batteries which they use for energy storage.
In this interview, Emmanuel Agyapong, Solar Taxi’s Chief Operating Officer, joined Njenga Hakeenah to discuss the evolution of Ghana’s electric vehicles market.

From Motorcycle Taxis in Kenya to E-Tricycles in Sierra Leone, Africa Is Building Its Own EV Ecosystem
lundi 10 mars 2025 • Durée 38:24
When Moses Sandy travelled to China with his prototype, he knew that Sierra Leone needed reliable and clean transport that could easily be powered not by gasoline but by the abundant energy harnessed from the sun.
In the heart of Freetown, Sandy’s prototype has become a game changer that has made the city a little quieter with only the hum of the tricycles' engines and the air a little less polluted since these e-tricycles, popularly known as keke, do not emit harmful gases like gasoline does.
At the company’s garage, NEEV Salone also partners with other players in the city interested in moving Sierra Leone from fossil fuels to renewable energy in transport.
In this first episode of The Africa EV Show, NEEV Salone’s founder, Moses Sandy, and Kenya’s EV trends analyst at Continent Rising, Ian Musembi, join Njenga Hakeenah to discuss EV adoption in Kenya and the West African country.

From Petrol to Electrons: Senegal’s Leap into Clean e-Boat Tech
Épisode 7
lundi 21 avril 2025 • Durée 20:14
Empowering local mechanics through hands-on training to reduce dependence on imported fuel is creating opportunities in tourism, fishing, and green innovation, demonstrating scalable solutions for Senegal’s clean energy future in e-mobility.
This week, we spotlight Jokosun Energies, a Senegalese company leading the charge in clean energy and electric mobility on West Africa’s waterways.
Raymond Sarr, an engineer, is the CEO of JoKoson Energies, and he helps us explore how fishermen in Senegal are converting traditional gas-powered pirogues into electric boats, reducing costs, cutting pollution, and creating local green jobs in the process.
From pioneering retrofits to building a scalable, African-led electric boat ecosystem, this episode is a deep dive into how real local solutions are emerging from the ground up.

Ethiopia's ICE Vehicle Ban Boosts Chinese EVs, Local Assembly
Épisode 6
lundi 14 avril 2025 • Durée 32:57
In this week's episode of the Africa EV Show, CGSP’s Njenga Hakeenah focuses on Ethiopia and its radical ban on internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
There are increasingly more Chinese electric vehicle brands in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, not only for personal cars but also for ride-hailing, mass movement of people, and transportation of goods.
Ethiopia has taken one of Africa's most aggressive stances on electric vehicles, banning the import of gas-powered cars, slashing EV taxes, and setting an ambitious target of half a million EVs by 2030. At the center of this transformation are Chinese automakers, local assembly plants, and a growing charging infrastructure network.
While the transition hasn't been smooth for everyone due to the high upfront costs, spare parts shortages, and resale uncertainties, Ethiopia's EV revolution is a case study for countries seeking to transition their vehicles from ICE to electric.
Sarah Assefa, a journalist based in Addis Ababa, joins Njenga this week for insights into her country’s EV shift.

How Kenya is Training the Next Generation of EV Mechanics & Owners
Épisode 5
lundi 7 avril 2025 • Durée 34:25
Kenya’s push for EV-trained mechanics is well in time as the country moves toward a greener future in mobility.
But with new technology comes new challenges: How do we train technicians for this electric vehicle wave? What do drivers need to know to avoid costly mistakes? And can Kenya’s power grid handle the surge?"
To answer these questions, Njenga Hakeenah sat with Alex Munene, Founder of Advanced Mobility in Kenya, who says that technology is moving fast—but the people pillar is being left behind.
Please join in this conversation because “Without training, adoption will stall."

Chinese Tech Enhancing Mobility for Kenya’s Wheelchair Users
Épisode 10
mardi 13 mai 2025 • Durée 27:51
In this impactful episode of The Africa EV Show, we speak with Jorgs Mbugua (CEO of eBikes Africa) and Dan Kamau (CEO of Ace Mobility), two Kenyan innovators transforming mobility for people with disabilities across the Global South.
They share how locally-built electric wheelchair attachments and adapted vehicles break barriers, reimagining Chinese EV platforms through partnerships with India, Colombia, and beyond. Dan also shares the personal story behind Ace Mobility, inspired by his paraplegic father, who lost his job due to transport inaccessibility.
The episode highlights Kenya’s pressing mobility gap: while only 4% of Kenyans own cars, infrastructure routinely excludes pedestrians and wheelchair users. Through inclusive design and advocacy, eBikes Africa and Ace Mobility prove that mobility is a right, not a privilege. This is more than a conversation, it’s a movement. Follow eBikes Africa and Ace Mobility to support inclusive mobility and help reshape Africa’s transport future.
