090 What Is Your Plan B For Your Next Tennis Match?18 Jun 201500:10:10

Do you have a "Plan B" for every tennis match you play? If not, you need to get one and soon. Because the way you like to play tennis, the style of play that highlights your strengths and downplays your weaknesses, may not necessarily be the style of play that is going to win you the match. In this week's episode of Tennis Quick Tips, I'm talking about the importance of having more than one strategy to win a match.

089 How and Why to Split Step in Tennis11 Jun 201500:13:34

Are you using the split step in your tennis play? Many players think the split step is unnecessary.  Or not worth making the effort to use.  A lot of us aren't even sure what the split step is.  I used to be a player like that but, when I was ready to take my tennis up a notch, especially at the net, I realized I had to make the split step part of my game.  In this episode, I'll tell you just what the split step is, why you should be using it, and how you can incorporate it into your own tennis game.

088 How and When to Forfeit in Tennis04 Jun 201500:25:18

PLEASE NOTE THAT MY COMMENTS IN THIS EPISODE ARE REGARDING UNOFFICIATED MATCHES.  IN OFFICIATED MATCHES AND TOURNAMENTS, THE RULES AND REGULATIONS REGARDING LATENESS AND DEFAULTS APPLY.

In this week’s episode, we’re going to talk about something that … the bottom line is, it’s a matter of tennis etiquette, and I don’t think tennis etiquette is something that we hear too much about. We recreational players out there, whether we’re playing for fun or playing as part of a league, playing a tournament, we know that tennis etiquette is often just as important and impactful of what happens on the court as the rules. So in this episode, I’m going to talk a little about the rules and a lot about the etiquette of forfeiting a tennis match.

086 When Partners Disagree In Tennis21 May 201500:17:48

Isn't it fun playing doubles? You have the best partner in the world. You both play the same way, following the same strategy. You never disagree on what your tactics should be or who should have got that ball down the middle. And you never, ever disagree on calls.

What? That's not how your tennis partnership works? Well, frankly, I doubt if anyone's partnership works that well. So, what do you do when you and your partner disagree on a call? What if one partner calls a serve in and the other calls it out? Is it a let? Do you just replay the point? Is there any kind of rule on this?

I bet it's no surprise to hear that not only is there a rule, but I know about it because I've been in this situation. In this episode, I'll address a recent comment from "Anne" about this difficult situation.  I'll tell you what the tennis rules have to say about this and, hopefully, how you can avoid "doubles purgatory" when you get into a disagreement on calls with your partner.

079 The Importance of Patience in Tennis03 Apr 201500:10:25

Just this week, I was reminded not once, not twice, not three times, but FOUR times how important it is to be patient when playing tennis. I tend to be a very impatient player, wanting to quickly rush the net and end the point.  Unfortunately, this often results in me making tons or errors and giving points and games away to my opponents.  So, because I'm playing a singles tournament this weekend and patience is EXTREMELY important in singles, I am working very hard to become a more patient tennis player.  The way to do this, I believe, is to (1) realize when you're being impatient, and (2) remind yourself to practice patience on court.

The easiest way to recognize that when you're impatient is usually during your serve.  If you're rushing through your serve and don't have a plan, meaning you having thought out where you should place your serve and why, then you're probably being impatient.  A good way to address this is by adopting a service ritual that you use on every single serve.  I talked about this in Episode 4 of Tennis Quick Tips, called Improve Your Tennis Serve Consistency with a Service Ritual.  I'll link to that below.

To help yourself practice patience, rituals are great but so are little reminders.  To remind myself to be patient in my tournament, I've put a little sticker on the inside of the throat of my racquet that says "Patience."  That's all it says but that's all of the reminder that I need to tell myself to slow down, have a plan, reduce my errors and wait for my opportunity to hit a winner.

Patience - it's an important skill on the tennis court and one that we can develop if we just realize we need it and remind ourselves to practice it.

078 Why You Should Get CPR AED Certified30 Mar 201500:17:23

077 Down The Middle Solves The Riddle26 Mar 201500:07:22

Where's the best place to put the ball in doubles?  If you're anything like me, you want to be up at the net, hitting a severe sharp angle off the court that not only can your opponents not return, but everyone claps when the point is over and tells you how incredible your shot was.  That is usually called going for the low-percentage shot and that is the kind of tennis I find myself constantly trying to play.

It has taken me a long time and a lot of lost points to accept that the beautiful severe angle shot is not always the smart shot when I'm playing doubles.  Often, just putting the ball right back down the middle, between my opponents, is the smartest and easiest way to win the point.  Why is this true?  Why do we need to keep reminding ourselves in our doubles matches that "down the middle solves the riddle"?  In this episode, I'll give you four good reasons why.

076 For A Good Serve, Hit A Good Toss19 Mar 201500:05:37

It's time for a tennis quick tip on the serve!  While the serve may be the most important stroke in tennis, I believe the toss is the most important part of the serve.  And that's why you need to always hit a good serve.  Too often, we get lazy or impatient and just hit any old toss.  Instead, we need to learn to be patient and wait for that perfect toss before hitting our serve.

178 The Pros and Cons of Playing Doubles Up at the Net22 Jan 202000:12:02

I'm sure you've heard it said many times - in doubles, the team that controls the net usually wins the point. But why is that? Have you thought about it much? It turns out that there are many reasons for doubles teams to get up to the net and try to take control of the point. In this episode, we'll talk about this "both up at the net" formation and why it is very, very often a great position to get yourself into when playing doubles.

070 Hydration Tips for Tennis Players and Endurance Athletes28 Jan 201500:23:57

What's one of the quickest ways to get re-energized in the middle of a tennis match?  It's simple.  Drink some water!  Being properly hydrated can keep you energetic and focused when you're playing a long match.  When you're dehydrated, you can feel weak, fuzzy-headed and even worse.  In this episode, I get some great hydration tips from physician and marathon runner, Dr. Jennifer Trotter.  We talk about how endurance athletes, like runners and tennis players, can stay properly hydrated when engaging in several consecutive hours of exercise.

065 Stretching For Flexibility In Tennis22 Dec 201400:15:25

Your flexibility is an important part of your tennis game.  But as important as maintaining and even increasing your flexibility is, most of us neglect doing the stretching work that can really help our game.  Instead, we like to focus on fine-tuning our strokes, building up our strength, or working on our mental game.  Flexibility takes a back seat to almost everything else we do to become better tennis players.

Well, that's about to change.  In this episode of Tennis Quick Tips, I'll give you some quick and simple stretching exercises that you can do to help maintain and even improve your flexibility.  Plus, I'll provide you with a free downloadable pdf guide with a complete stretching routine, including photos and descriptions, that you can quickly and easily perform.

064 Arthur Ashe On Tennis Book Review16 Dec 201400:07:27

If you become the least bit interested in tennis, you'll soon come across Arthur Ashe. If you watch any of the U.S. Open each year, you hear his name repeatedly since the main stadium for the U.S. Open is (you guessed it) Arthur Ashe Stadium. You may know that Arthur Ashe died in 1993 at the age of 49 from AIDS-related complications. He had an illustrious tennis career, winning 3 Grand Slam titles - the 1968 U.S. Open, the 1970 Australian Open, and Wimbledon in 1975.  And he did more to break down the race barriers in professional tennis than any player of his time.

It wasn't too long after I took up tennis that I picked up Arthur Ashe's book, Arthur Ashe On Tennis: Strokes, Strategy, Traditions, Players, Psychology, and Wisdom. His book was published in 1995, after his death. So Ashe was not around to see all of the changes we see on the pro circuit today - powerful racquets, indestructible strings, open-stance strokes, exaggerated grips. But you and I aren't playing on the pro circuit (at least I don't think we are), so a lot of the points he makes in his book are still valid for recreational players like us, out to have fun and play some competitive tennis.

His book is wonderful and so easy to read. In it, he gives lots and lots of bullet-point tips on strokes and strategy.

For a complete review of this book, including a few of Ashe's great pointers, check out the show notes to this episode:

063 How To Play Better Cold Weather Tennis09 Dec 201400:07:33

Here in Houston, it's cold.  And by cold, I mean we're often having to play tennis in temperatures that are below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.  I know for many of you, temperatures like that sound pleasant if not downright balmy.  But look, people like me live in Houston for a reason and that reason is that we hate cold weather.  So, to us, what is balmy for Maine is absolutely freeezzzzing.  However you feel about what truly qualifies as cold weather, there's one thing we can all agree on - playing tennis when it's cold is a lot different than playing tennis when it's warm.  So in this episode, we're talking about how you can change your game to play even better tennis in the cold weather.

061 Better Footwork For Tennis25 Nov 201400:10:22

A typical tennis match requires you to move all over the tennis court in an incredibly diverse number of ways.  You don't just run around the court, You sprint, reach, stretch, lunge, bend, leap, quickly change direction, and explosively start and stop.  You charge forward to the net.  You quickly back up when you get lobbed.  You run back and forth, diagonally, and every once in a while you jump up in hopes of stopping a lob.  In this episode, we'll talk about on-court movement and how you can improve your tennis footwork to make sure you're playing as well as you possibly can.

Have you thought about all of the pros and cons of the one up, one back formation? Because yes, there are pros AND cons. 060 Where To Stand When You're Serving12 Nov 201400:10:25

I just played a doubles match where one of my opponents stood in the doubles alley (behind the baseline of course) when hitting her serve.  She did this on both sides of the court, throughout the match and was really good at placing her serve all  over the service box.  Since this is such an exaggerated and unusual place to stand, I wanted to be sure and let you know what the rules have to say on this particular stance.  In this episode, we'll look at ITF Rules 17 and 18 which give you the answer.  You can find the show notes for this episode by going to:

051 Best Practices for Using Notes on the Tennis Court25 Aug 201400:15:52

While you're not allowed to have on-court coaching during your tennis matches, the USTA's Rules of Tennis do allow you to look at notes on court.  But can you look at notes on court in the middle of a game or between points?  Can you put your notes in your pocket and then pull them out to review right before you serve?  What's the rule on this and what's the best way to make use of notes on the tennis court?  In this episode, I'll answer a listener question raising this issue, I'll go into what I think the rules of tennis have to say, and I'll give you a great way to remind yourself of the one, most important thing you need to remember in every tennis match you play, on every point.

176 The Life Lessons I Learned From My Big Tennis Break - Part 210 Jan 202000:24:19

Hey Tennis Quick Tips listeners! I'm so glad you are here and listening in to this episode. Because this is Part 2 of my two part mini-series called "The Life Lessons I Learned From My Big Tennis Break." Hopefully, you listened to Episode 175 already because that was Part 1 and in that episode I explained just how I was able to achieve complete and total tennis burnout back in the summer of 2017, right before my big two year break from tennis.

In this episode, I'm going to let you know how I got over my tennis burnout and how I came to love tennis again. So much so that I returned not just to playing tennis, but to talking about and writing about tennis, and to recording this podcast right here, Tennis Quick Tips. I'll also tell you what I learned about myself and how I continue to work on improving myself and living a better life. Because I have learned some pretty big lessons over the past year that I think are helping me to become a calmer, kinder, happier person, not just in my tennis life but in my life.

And I hope when you hear my story, you'll hear something that makes you think about yourself and your own game. I hope you'll hear something that will make you love tennis and want to continue playing and improving your game. And if you also hear something that becomes a life lesson for you, that's even better!

So, if you haven't already listened to the previous episode, Episode 175, I highly recommend you do so before you listen in to this episode. Because this one will make a lot more sense if you've already heard Part 1. And with that recommendation, let's get into Part 2 and talk about the big life lessons I learned from my big tennis break.
