Mallori is a licensed mental health counselor, an internationally certified prevention specialist, motivational interviewing trainer and a certified humor professional. As a speaker and trainer, she has sparked curiosity in both the young and young-at-heart. Her passion for creating a lasting impact led her to the public health field and for the past 15 years she has worked at Prevention Insights, a center within the School of Public Health at Indiana University, Bloomington.  Mallori works with people all over the world. She served on the Board of Directors for the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor and in 2021 became a TEDx speaker. Her credentials don’t impress her family, but occasionally her corny jokes do make them laugh.

Dr. Lodge McCammon is a therapeutic humorist, instructional designer, author, musician, and international education consultant who provides professional services, including keynote speeches, workshops, curriculum development, and a variety of training programs. He works with school districts, universities, nonprofits, and businesses (e.g., Palm Beach Schools, University of the West Indies, Discovery Education, Microsoft, Amazon, The Coca-Cola Company). Most recently, Lodge facilitated a month of therapeutic humor for the Nourished Teachers Community, which is a Facebook-funded initiative focused on helping educators cope with work stress and avoid burnout. Ep 54 – MI in Peer Support Recovery Services 21 Mar 202201:40:50

MI in Peer Support Recovery Services

We are happy to have had John Burns on to discuss MI in peer support recovery services. John is a person in long term recovery and a family member of a loved one who has struggled with substance use. He is the director of SOS Recovery Community Organization with recovery community centers in Rochester, Dover and Hampton, NH.  John founded Families Hoping and Coping in 2014, a peer-based family support group for family members and loved ones of those struggling with substance use disorder.  Families Hoping and Coping has chapters that meet weekly in Dover and Portsmouth, NH.  He prides himself most on being an outspoken advocate for people who use drugs, building recovery-oriented systems of care, and promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice for those marginalized who often are left without a voice and oppressed due to inhumane global, national and local drug policy.

John is a board member for the NH Harm Reduction Coalition.  He also serves on the NH Drug Overdose Fatality Review Commission and on the executive committee for the Strafford County, New Hampshire Public Health Advisory Committee.

John became a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers in 2021 and is involved in offering basic and advanced Motivational Interviewing workshops within the peer-recovery support service field several times a year.  He also has completed Motivational Interviewing Competency Assessment (MICA) training and provides coding and coaching services to his staff and recovery support providers across New England in an effort to expand motivational interviewing competency in the peer-assisted recovery service field.

John earned his MBA from Southern NH University and is credentialed as a Certified Recovery Support Worker (CRSW) in NH.  John has helped grow SOS from a $5000 all-volunteer effort in Sept 2016 into a robust program with 20 full-time employees and four recovery community centers.  All of SOS recovery centers recently became registered as syringe service providers in New Hampshire and provide safer injection supplies, safer smoking and safer sex supplies as well as naloxone and overdose prevention programs.  John and SOS have led numerous initiatives including a state-wide criminal justice recovery program and a national collaboration in digital recovery meetings offered 8 times a day, 7 days a week along with family support meetings nightly.

John has been involved in development of several curriculums with SOS including the Art & Science of Peer Assisted Recovery, Ethical Considerations for Peer-Assisted Recovery, Suicide Prevention for Peer-Assisted Recovery, HIV, AIDS and Hepatitis Prevention for Peer Assisted Recovery and more.  He has trained and developed curriculums for over 5 years now and speaks regularly to large audiences across the Northeast.

Ep 80 – Motivational Interviewing & Behaviourism24 Jun 202400:57:13

Episode 80 – MI and Behaviourism

Glenn and Sebastian welcomed Dr James Anderson to the podcast to discuss MI and behaviourism. James is a psychologist and Chief of Psychiatry at Bassett Healthcare Network in Cooperstown, NY.  James is interested in the integration of behavioral health into primary care and improving the ability of our healthcare systems to provide whole-person care.  He has special interest in helping people struggling with addiction, and has published work on integrating accessible and effective treatment for opioid use disorder into primary care settings.  James takes a technically eclectic approach to offering psychotherapy intervention to patients in need, including use of cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and of course, motivational interviewing.  Theoretically, James views the human condition from a radical behaviorist viewpoint, and contrary to the common view of such an approach as encouraging a mechanistic and cold world view, sees behaviourism as underlying a philosophy of acceptance and tolerance of others.

Ep 36 – The Psycholinguistics of MI19 Nov 202000:54:26

Psycholinguistics

Glenn and Sebastian were excited about having Paul Amrhein on the podcast given his historical importance to the development of MI. Paul is presently on the faculties of Montclair State University (Professor, Psychology) in New Jersey and Columbia University (Adjunct Associate Professor, Psychiatry) in New York. An experimental psycholinguist by training, he earned his PhD in psychology at the University of Wisconsin—Madison. In 1995, as a faculty colleague at the University of New Mexico, Paul began work with Bill Miller on an exploration of the nature and role of client language evoked during MI as a predictor of substance use outcomes. Based on his dissertation work, Paul devised a process model explaining how the valence (sustain or change) and strength (weak or strong) of client commitment expressions, supported by underlying preparatory language, lead to behavioral outcomes. Since then, he has been investigating how factors of therapist training in MI and client learning ability interact to promote or impede change talk and its relationship to subsequent behavior.
