Wisdom Keepers: w/Marlene Allen - Deeply Rooted Elders01 Mar 202500:25:17

"(Elders)... they are not running, they are this steady force,...whenI speak to you,...I am not going anywhere.  You might run off, but I will be right here waiting for you when you come back...That's what Elders get to do. They are creating space for people to be there best self." ~ Marlene Allen

Elders are so important in building relationally healthy communities. Without them we are missing a key part and it's nearly impossible. What is the role of elders in community? What does healthy community look like? How do we glean their wisdom? In this new series, Wisdom Keepers: The Role of Elders in Building Relationally Healthy Community not only will these questions and many more be answered, the answers will come directly from Elders.

True Elders bring stability, shade, and strength to their communities. Elders who are deeply rooted, know who they are and can see those around them through the eyes of heaven are invaluable in their community.  But what happens when Elders pull up their roots and try to replant themselves in a different community? Can they ever regain the depth of connection? Can they grow taller and stronger? Will their branch provide the covering they once did? If so, how?

Join Tennison and Ginelle as they begin a new conversation with Life Model Works Executive Director, Marlene Allen. She is an author, teacher, mentor, networker, licensed minister, and joy-starter. Her passion for teaching spiritual principles to young people led to a forty-plus-year journey of serving in schools and churches. Marlene is called ‘Momma Marlene’ by most, and she truly is and 'Momma' to all.

Listen in as Marlene talks about her own journey of up rooting and replanting. Discover how she continued to be 'Momma Marlene' in her new community.

You don't want to miss out on the wisdom and joy that explodes through this podcast.

Wisdom Keepers: w/Michel Hendricks pt 3 - Elders, Secure Attachment and Multi-ethnic Maturity18 Feb 202500:24:14

"Attachment is the 'pipe' that maturity is passed from one vessel to another" ~ Michel Henricks

Secure attachment is needed for healthy relational maturity to be passed from one generation to the next. What happens when the attachment styles is insecure and skilled are being passed down? How can Elders help communities in this area? A gift that is under rated is the presence of different cultures within the community. Every culture has strengths and weaknesses and left to themselves the weakness grow and become more obvious. However, if we all live in the same community, the strengths of us all get amplified.

Join Tennison and Ginelle as they conclude their conversation with Michel Hendricks and discuss how elders help the community grow with secure attachment and model how to live. As elders also share stories of how it is for us to act, they create safety and security for the community at large.

THBC Part 32: Whole-Brain Christianity ~ Relationally Mature Pastors & Leaders09 Dec 202100:30:50

Whole-Brained relationally mature pastors and leaders are unfortunately, hard to find today.  We, the people, have a very strong propensity to promote people past their maturity level.  We see their gifts and jump at the chance to have them lead us.  But in doing so we tend to sacrifice the importance of relational connections that God designed us to live in.

In this episode, Tennison and Ginelle will be discussing what Whole-Brained relational mature pastors and leaders look like.  What the character traits that we should be looking for, and be seen, in our leaders. What is the purpose of the titles, Apostle, Pastor, Prophet, Teacher, Evangelist, that we give our leaders.

THBC Part 31: Whole-Brain Christianity07 Dec 202100:27:31

Living Whole-Brained is the way that God design us to live from the beginning.  And Jesus modeled this for us.  Everything he did was relational, however He did not forgo knowledge and spiritual disciplines.  Somehow, over time we have swung the pendulum to the completely opposite side.  We forgo the true relational aspects that we were created to live and thrive in and functionally live in the knowledge, truth, program, and spiritual discipline side of our brain.  And we think that is how transformation happens.  This is not the roadmap that Jesus left us.

Join Tennison and Ginelle as they begin to unpack Whole-Brained Christianity.  In this episode they will revisit the 4 ingredients for healthy soil and what a Whole-Brained church could look like.

THBC Part 29: The Relational Infection - Your Brain on Narcissism23 Nov 202100:29:41

Enemy Mode:  We have all heard this phrase.  This is what happens when you are trying to win or feel that everyone is against you.  Most of us have ventured into this territory.  However, did you know that there are 2 types of enemy mode, Simple and Peditory.
Join Tennison & Ginelle as they discuss and dissect these two very different ways to operate in enemy mode, the effects of each, and what is happening in your brain and the brain of the narcissist while this is happening.

THBC Part 28: The Relational Infection - Narcissism and Self-Justification16 Nov 202100:38:26

Self Justification is the go to response when corrected for people who have narcissistic tendencies.  Since they cannot metabolize shame relationally and their need to feel special is driving them, deflection is key.  Self justification can come in many forms, everything from, "You'll never understand in a million years!" to, "How dare you question me!" to " God told me to do this."
Listen in as Tennison and Ginelle look at this narcissistic tendency and continue to dissect this relational infection of narcissism

THBC Part 26: The Relational Infection - Narcissism in Pastors and Leaders26 Oct 202100:30:09

Would you be able to identify narcissist behavior?  Most people believe that they can.  If so, why are there so many narcissist people leading churches, businesses  and communities?  Believe it or not we actually look for, find,  put in leadership, and hire people with major narcissist tendencies and call them strong leaders and follow them blindly.  All while there is a wake of destruction behind them.

Narcissism: The relational infection.  Narcissism may not be what you think is actually very easy to overlook and encourage. Sometimes it is hard to recognize until it is too late.  The church, in its current structure, is the perfect breeding ground for narcissism to grow, thrive and return if the relational connection of its people is not strong.  Join Tennison and Ginelle as they begin to unpack this insidious disease.

Wisdom Keepers: w/Michel Hindricks pt. 2 - Elders, Filling the Holes in Our "Cheese"11 Feb 202500:21:07

"Maturity is like Swiss Cheese, our maturity has holes... When we only stay with people inner same age group, the community has all the same holes,... Multigenerational community is important because elders can see the holes and fill them. So as a community the block of cheese is one solid block..." ~ Michel Henricks

Join Tennison and Ginelle as they continue their conversation with Michel Hendricks and discuss how elders help the community suffer well and remind us of who we are in the mist of the suffering. Elders also fill the holes in the community that arise because of the immaturity that is present.

THBC Part 23: Healthy Correction: Rejecting Condemnation05 Oct 202100:27:12

Healthy correction is an important factor in character development and shame is an important part of healthy correction.  We have talked about the differences between healthy shame and toxic shame and how each of them can be and have been used and how God has designed shame to be used and felt.
In this episode Tennison and Ginelle finish their conversation on healthy correction by taking a good look at toxic shame and why it must be rejected at all cost!  The power of shame was never meant to be welded the way most commonly do.  But until God's way becomes the norm, we must recognize and reject shame and correction that is toxic in its nature.

THBC Part 17: Toxic Group Identity24 Aug 202100:11:36

Join Tennison and Ginelle as they discuss some very easy ways that churches and community build their group identity around very toxic and potential destructive things.  These usually start as a "great way to minister" to a group of people, but if gone unchecked you can begin to identity yourself as your malfunction, (who we are when we are not acting like ourselves).  When this happens we erode, and can misrepresent our true identity.

THBC Part 16: Shallow Group Identity17 Aug 202100:21:36

Forming a healthy and strong group identity is not easy.  We need a strong group identity to remind us who we are and how it is for us to act.  A lot of the time the group identity that is formed in both churches and communities is a very shallow one.  Shallow group identity do not bring lasting transformation.  They don't remind us of who we are or how it is for us to act They are very dangerous and really don't give us a lot to hold on to.
In this episode, Tennison and Ginelle will be talking about different ways we try to form strong group identities that are, in reality, very weak and shallow.  These group identities have missed the mark on who we should be identifying with and do not help us transform into who God has designed us to be.

Wisdom Keepers: w/Michel Hendricks- Characteristics of True Elders 04 Feb 202500:24:00

"Elders by definition have a really well developed right brain skill set...they know how to model a secure attachment,...attune to others emotions even if they don't agree with what happened,...very good at seeing the gold in a person that is not readily apparent,...they are not worried about defending their image,...and they naturally act like themselves rather people are happy about that or not." ~ Michel Henricks

The role of Elders in building healthy communities is incredibly important. They impact the life, health, and growth in ways that you may not even realize. So having healthy, mature elders is a must if the community is to thrive. But how do  we recognize them when we see them? What do they look like?

Join Tennison and Ginelle as they begin a conversation with Michel Hendricks, Director of Life Model Consulting, and co-author of The Other Half of Church.  In this episode they discuss the characteristics of elders and how these characteristics enrich and develop the communities that they are a part of.

Hesed/Attachment is so important in creating identity.  Our connection to God is directly connected to our connection, positive or negative,  with the people around us.  If our earthly attachments are based in strength, steadfastness, and love our attachment to God is usually the same, and our identity is strong and secure.  However if our earthly attachments have been build on fear, weakness and withdrawal, we will inevitably attach to God in the same way and our identity will follow.  Join Tennison and Ginelle as they talk about the importance of strong, healthy, joy fueled attachments.

Wisdom Keepers: w/Chris & Jen Coursey Pt. 3 - Elders as Gentle Protectors 28 Jan 202500:17:09

"Gentle Protectors are willing to share in the pain that they create...Predators want to put their pain on you so they don't feel any of it."
~ Jen Coursey

Elders are so important in building relationally healthy communities. Without them we are missing a key part and it's nearly impossible. What is the role of elders in community? What does healthy community look like? How do we glean their wisdom? In this new series, Wisdom Keepers: The Role of Elders in Building Relationally Healthy Community not only will these questions and many more be answered, the answers will come directly from Elders.

Living and leading when your heart motivation is love is a beautiful thing. You bring peace, stay curious, and set a culture of connection and authenticity. But what happens when you are basing everything from this place of fear. When all your actions, thoughts, and questions are dipped in fear. Sometimes fear even masquerades as love. The fear of present pain out ways the love found in future health.

Join Tennison and Ginelle as they conclude their conversation with Chris and Jen Coursey as they explore the concept of elders as gentle protectors. True elders (gentle protectors), will call us back to who we are designed to be even if it causes pain. This pain is used to grow us not hinder us. Elders are not afraid of this pain and are willing to carry it with us.

THBC Part 3 - No Relationship, No Transformation!18 May 202100:35:43

The western church has built almost everything  it does on delivering information and telling people how to live this Christian life.  This way of "ministry" has not not produced the true transformation we all desire.  True transformation, true discipleship, only comes inside of healthy relationship and that is what is missing from the western church.  That is how Jesus did it with His disciples.  We are designed to live, learn and grow in community.  Community is hard and messy and beautiful and rewording.  Community is were we are shown how to live this Christian life, and how is it like for me to act.

In this episode we will explore why healthy relationship is a, if not the, most important piece to Transformation, Identity, Character Development, Spiritual Formation and Discipleship.

THBC Part 2: What's The Brain Got To Do With It?! 11 May 202100:30:33

Transformation=truth+good choices+power.
This statement sounds true and is widely excepted in most church circles today.  What if I told you that is not the formula for transformation?  What if I told you that this formula was missing a key ingredient?  What I told you that this formula was a Half Brained formula?
Join us as we  explore the primary functions the left and right brain have, the roles that they play, and why true transformation, spiritual formation and character development can only happen when both are engaged in discipleship.

The Half Brained Church: How The Church Has Lost It's Ever-Loving Mind04 May 202100:30:29

"Spiritual formation is the central task of the local congregation, the primary task that Jesus gave Christian leaders." ~ Dallas Willard~
If spiritual formation is the central task of the church, how are we doing?  Are we seeing and experiencing lasting deep transformation?  Are a lot of christian communities strong and connected, or weak and shallow?  If we are honest with ourselves, I think we will answer the latter to both questions.  Why?
In this podcast we will begin to lay the foundation to answer those questions.  Join us as we take a deep look at how your spiritual growth can be revolutionized by understanding the role your brain plays in spiritual formation, character development, and discipleship.
In this series we will explore the four ingredients to develop and maintain vibrant whole brained, transformational communities.

  • Finding true joy though connection and relationships
  • Love that securely attaches communities (Hesed)
  • Group identity that emulates the character of Christ
  • Creating a culture of uplifting and healthy correction
