Oteil Burbridge

Épisode 100

mercredi 20 septembre 2023Durée 29:51

You won't find many bass players on the jam band scene more respected than Oteil Burbridge. He's best known for his time in The Allman Brothers Band, where he served from 1997 until the group ended their storied career in 2014. Before that, Burbridge was in the Aquarium Rescue Unit, a group founded by former wrestling manager Colonel Bruce Hampton that was known for blending top-tier musicianship with freewheeling fun. After The Allman Brothers, Burbridge formed Dead & Company with John Mayer, Jeff Chimenti, and Grateful Dead alums Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann. This summer, they embarked on their last tour. Burbridge's latest project is Dead-adjacent: An album of eight ballads written by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia called Lovely View Of Heaven. You can hear his jazz influence all over the record, and I have to say his singing is on point as well. Burbridge has been performing these songs with his group Oteil & Friends. Burbridge is usually on the hosting end of the podcast - he has his own called Comes a Time - but here he joins me to take us through the album and offer some incredible insights on the Hunter/Garcia songwriting team. https://www.oteilburbridge.com/ https://www.songfacts.com/ https://www.facebook.com/songfacts https://twitter.com/Songfacts http://pantheonpodcasts.com/ https://twitter.com/pantheonpods Hosted and Edited by Corey O’Flanagan https://twitter.com/ofe1818 https://www.instagram.com/coreyofe/ corey@songfacts.com Songfacts Podcast Spotify Playlist https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3IThMW5yB8XnFh5cS2gTxR?si=KAhiqWRcSIy5uxb2sZPFTA This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts. Country star Suzy Bogguss

Épisode 9

mercredi 7 octobre 2020Durée 48:08

The Suzy Bogguss story starts in the small town of Aledo, Illinois, where she grew up listening to her dad's Merle Haggard 8-tracks. In 1985, she got a big break when she sang at Silver Dollar City, a Nashville amusement park that Dolly Parton turned into Dollywood the next year. With Parton's endorsement, she became a featured performer at the park and earned a record deal. Bogguss is more of a song interpreter than a songwriter - the title track of her 1989 debut album Somewhere Between is a Haggard cover - but she did co-write one of her biggest hits: "Hey Cinderella," an unconventional take on the famous fairy tale. Speaking from her home in Franklin, Tennessee, Bogguss tells the "Hey Cinderella" story, talks about her Dollywood days, and performs her song "Letting Go." https://www.suzybogguss.com/ https://www.songfacts.com/ https://www.facebook.com/songfacts https://twitter.com/Songfacts http://pantheonpodcasts.com/ https://twitter.com/pantheonpods Hosted and Edited by Corey O’Flanagan https://twitter.com/ofe1818 https://www.instagram.com/coreyofe/ This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts. Épisode 8

vendredi 2 octobre 2020Durée 44:48

Born and raised in a Christian family in New York City, Amanda Brown was influenced mostly by gospel music until her time at the highly prestigious LaGuardia Arts High School. After a brief stint at Howard University, she decided to pursue music full time and soon found herself on tour singing backup for Alicia Keys. Three years on the road and she was ready to pave her own path. Singing in late-night clubs in NYC she earned her chops as a performer and decided to audition for season 3 of The Voice. In this episode of the Songfacts Podcast, we get a behind-the-scenes look at her time on the show, including the day-to-day workflow and the nerves she had leading up to her stellar performance of Aerosmith's "Dream On." Since placing fifth on the show, Amanda has released the album Dirty Water, toured with Adele, and is set to release a new EP and the single, "From Here," at the end of October. https://amandabrownmusic.com/ https://www.songfacts.com/ https://www.facebook.com/songfacts https://twitter.com/Songfacts http://pantheonpodcasts.com/ https://twitter.com/pantheonpods Hosted and Edited by Corey O’Flanagan https://twitter.com/ofe1818 https://www.instagram.com/coreyofe/ This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts. Monique DeBose on Improv Singing and her "Rally Call"

Épisode 7

mercredi 30 septembre 2020Durée 49:36

From her time improvising at UC Berkeley, to traveling the world performing and finding her voice as a songwriter, Monique DeBose has an incredible story to share. A polymath with degrees in Spiritual Psychology and Mathematics, she earned acclaim for her one-woman show Mulatto Math: Summing Up the Race Equation in America and is a prominent speaker who has done TED Talks. DeBose has made her mark in music with songs that carry the weight of struggle and experience. Her 2018 song "Damaged Goods" looks at how our perceived faults are part of our humanity; her 2020 track "Rally Call" summons the disenfranchised to stand up and fight, because every voice matters. She discusses both of these songs in this episode of the Songfacts Podcast, and also explains how improv singing gave her an artistic foundation. Speaking with DeBose, it's clear why she gets invited to TED Talks: her energy can fill up a room and leave you wanting more. https://www.moniquedebosemusic.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcWgPEUT_x0 https://www.songfacts.com/ https://www.facebook.com/songfacts https://twitter.com/Songfacts http://pantheonpodcasts.com/ https://twitter.com/pantheonpods Hosted and Edited by Corey O’Flanagan https://twitter.com/ofe1818 https://www.instagram.com/coreyofe/ Learn more about your ad choices. Author Ken McNab on The Last Days of The Beatles

Épisode 6

mercredi 23 septembre 2020Durée 01:01:03

From the moon landing to the Stonewall riots, to Woodstock and Altamont, 1969 gave the world incredible highs and pivotal lows. Through it all, the most famous band in the world, The Beatles, struggled to keep it together while also putting together some of their most treasured music. In his book And in the End: The Last Days of The Beatles, author Ken McNab details this historic year for the Fab Four on a month-by-month account. It opens in chilly London with the infamous rooftop concert, takes us through the painstaking recording of the songs that would form the albums Let It Be and Abbey Road, and gives us an inside look at the chaotic business side of the band. In this episode, he posits on what broke up The Beatles and explains how Abbey Road could have been very different if George Harrison got the space on the album he deserved. Kirk Hamilton of Strong Songs

Épisode 5

mercredi 16 septembre 2020Durée 50:18

What makes a song great? Kirk Hamilton is the guy to ask. A few years ago, a friend asked him to use his vast musical knowledge to explain why Toto's "Africa" is so special, which led Kirk down a path to his Strong Songs podcast, where he deconstructs songs in glorious detail; he's covered tunes by Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac, and even the Hamilton musical. We had the opportunity to speak with Kirk about his musical education and qualifications. He also takes us on a dive into the world of video game music and lets us in on his process for putting an episode together in his home studio - it's quite the musical undertaking. So join us for a great conversation with Kirk, who has one of the most cheerful podcast voices around, and then head over and listen to his podcast, Strong Songs. https://strongsongspodcast.com/ https://twitter.com/strongsongs https://www.songfacts.com/ https://www.facebook.com/songfacts https://twitter.com/Songfacts http://pantheonpodcasts.com/ https://twitter.com/pantheonpods Hosted and Edited by Corey O’Flanagan https://twitter.com/ofe1818 https://www.instagram.com/coreyofe/ Learn more about your ad choices.
