Can’t Sleep? Stop Forcing It | Hypnosis-Inspired Rest for Insomnia
S6 E148 - Can’t Sleep? Stop Forcing It | Hypnosis-Inspired Rest for Insomnia
What if the effort to make yourself sleep is actually keeping you awake? When you struggle with insomnia, bedtime can slowly become a performance: Am I relaxed enough? Why am I still awake? How many hours do I have left? What if tomorrow is terrible?
That pressure can increase sleep anxiety, hypervigilance, and nighttime arousal, making something your body normally does automatically feel like a task you have to accomplish. In this episode of Sleep Takeout, sleep psychologist Dr. Daniel Baughn and sleep medicine physician Dr. Michelle Zetoony explore gentle, hypnosis-inspired approaches to insomnia and nighttime rest designed to help shift the goal from forcing sleep to allowing rest. Hypnosis is not mind control, and it cannot command your body to fall asleep. Instead, hypnosis-inspired techniques can help quiet attention, reduce monitoring, soften hyperarousal, and create a greater sense of safety and permission at night.
🌙 If nighttime has become something you dread or overthink: Daniel works with professionals and high-achievers struggling with insomnia, sleep anxiety, and difficulty turning their minds off at night. You can schedule a brief phone conversation here: https://www.danielbaughn.com/schedule-call
In this episode, you’ll learn: 🧠 Why trying harder to sleep can backfire Sleep is a biologically regulated process. Monitoring, evaluating, and trying to force it can increase the very alertness that keeps you awake.
✨ What hypnosis actually is, and what it isn’t Hypnosis is better understood as a state of focused, quieter attention rather than losing control or being “put under.”
🛏️ Why feeling safe matters for sleep A brain that is scanning for problems has difficulty disengaging. Reducing nighttime vigilance can help create conditions in which rest comes more naturally.
🌌 The “safe space” approach Rather than demanding relaxation, you can gently direct attention toward sensations, imagery, or memories associated with comfort and safety.
😌 Progressive softening instead of body inspection Constantly checking whether every muscle is relaxed can become another sleep test. Softening invites rather than demands.
💭 How to change your relationship with being awake Instead of treating wakefulness as an emergency, you can practice allowing the night to unfold without immediately trying to fix it.
🎧 A guided hypnosis-inspired rest exercise Dan and Michelle walk through a brief practice emphasizing safety, permission to be awake, and letting go of the requirement that sleep happen immediately. If guided relaxation and mindfulness appeal to you, Dr. Michelle Zetoony’s Book and Breath class offers another opportunity to practice slowing down and creating space for rest.

The key idea The goal is not: “How do I make myself sleep right now?” It is closer to: “I can create the conditions for rest and allow my body to do what it already knows how to do.” Sometimes sleep follows. Sometimes rest comes first. Either way, you are no longer fighting the night.
This episode is educational and is not individualized medical advice. Persistent sleep difficulties or symptoms such as breathing pauses, loud snoring, restless legs, significant pain, medication effects, or dangerous daytime sleepiness may warrant professional evaluation.
👇 Have you noticed that the harder you try to fall asleep, the more awake you become? Tell us in the comments what happens when you replace trying to sleep with simply allowing yourself to rest.

S6 E147 - Stop Trying to Sleep: Why Effort Makes Insomnia Worse
What if trying harder to sleep is actually part of what’s keeping you awake? For many people with chronic insomnia, sleep becomes something they monitor, calculate, track, optimize, and try to control. But sleep is not a performance. In this episode of Sleep Takeout, psychologist Dr. Daniel Baughn and sleep medicine physician Dr. Michelle Zetoony explain a core CBT-I principle: sleep is biologically regulated and cannot be forced. The goal is not to “make” yourself sleep. It is to create reasonable conditions for sleep, remove interference, and rebuild trust in your body’s ability to sleep on its own.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
🧠 Why sleep cannot be forced Trying to consciously control sleep can create more arousal instead of more sleep.
😴 Tired vs. sleepy Feeling exhausted or mentally drained is not always the same as having a strong biological drive to fall asleep.
⏰ How insomnia becomes a control spiral Clock-watching, bedtime calculations, sleep trackers, rituals, and constant monitoring can make sleep feel increasingly high-stakes.
🔁 The insomnia effort paradox The harder you try to make sleep happen, the more pressure you place on a process that normally happens automatically.
🌙 Why one bad night does not mean something is wrong Healthy sleep varies from night to night. Avoiding panic and overcorrection after poor sleep can help keep insomnia from gaining momentum.
🛏️ How CBT-I helps “remove the brakes” Stimulus control and carefully adjusting time in bed can reduce behaviors that interfere with the natural sleep process.
👀 How to relearn your sleep signals Rather than constantly asking whether you should be asleep, you can learn to notice genuine sleepiness and let it guide when you go to bed. Progress with insomnia does not mean perfect sleep every night. Sometimes it looks like going to bed without calculating how many hours remain, having a bad night without assuming tomorrow will be a disaster, checking the clock less, and allowing a sleep score to matter less.
The goal is to move from: “How do I make myself sleep tonight?” to: “My body knows how to sleep. I don’t need to force it.”
Not every sleep problem is behavioral insomnia. Loud snoring or breathing pauses, restless or uncomfortable legs, medication effects, significant pain, or dangerous daytime sleepiness may warrant medical evaluation.

S6 E146 - What a Cooling Mattress Commercial Taught Us About Sleep & Fatigue
What happens when a sleep medicine physician spends an entire day filming a cooling mattress commercial in a hot Florida studio?
In this episode of Sleep Takeout, psychologist Dr. Daniel Baughn and sleep medicine physician Dr. Michelle Zetoony go behind the scenes of Michelle’s commercial shoot and use the experience to explore a bigger question:
How much does temperature affect sleep, and what happens to your performance when you’re tired?
Michelle shares what it was like filming a professional mattress commercial, including a thermographic camera demonstration showing how a traditional mattress can retain body heat compared with a cooling mattress designed to reduce heat transfer back to the sleeper.
From there, Dan and Michelle connect sleep temperature to circadian biology, fatigue, and the real-world challenges faced by people who work long, overnight, or rotating shifts.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
🌡️ Why body temperature matters for sleep Your core body temperature naturally changes across the day and night. A cooler sleep environment can support the body’s transition toward sleep.
🛏️ What cooling mattresses can and can’t do Sleep products may improve comfort and the sleep environment, but they cannot replace adequate sleep or correct chronic sleep deprivation.
🎬 What a long commercial shoot revealed about fatigue Long production days can require sustained attention, decision-making, and performance even when the body is increasingly tired.
🌙 Why shift workers face a unique sleep challenge Healthcare professionals, first responders, transportation workers, hospitality workers, and others on overnight or rotating schedules often have to work against their natural circadian rhythm.
☀️ How light affects shift work sleep Strategic light exposure, along with a dark, quiet, cool sleep environment, can help support daytime sleep after overnight work.
☕ How to use caffeine more strategically Caffeine can improve alertness, but timing matters. Using it too late in a shift can make it harder to sleep afterward.
😴 When strategic naps can help Short, planned naps may improve alertness and safety during extended wakefulness, particularly when fatigue is becoming significant.
⚠️ When “pushing through” is no longer safe Fatigue affects reaction time, attention, judgment, and performance. Sometimes the safest strategy is not another cup of coffee, but recognizing that the body needs sleep.
A key takeaway
A better mattress, blackout curtains, cool temperatures, caffeine timing, and strategic naps can all help.
But none of them can fully compensate for not getting enough sleep.
The environment can support sleep.
It cannot replace sleep.
👇 Have you ever worked an overnight shift, rotating schedule, or extremely long workday?
What helped you stay alert and recover afterward? Let us know in the comments.

S6 145 - Why Teens Become Night Owls: Puberty, Sleep & What Parents Can Do
Why does your teenager suddenly want to stay up late, struggle to wake up for school, and sleep until noon on weekends?
It may not be laziness, poor discipline, or even insomnia.
In this episode of Sleep Takeout, psychologist Dr. Daniel Baughn and sleep medicine physician Dr. Michelle Zetoony explain what happens to teen sleep during puberty, why the adolescent body clock naturally shifts later, and what parents can do to help without turning bedtime into a nightly battle.
During adolescence, the brain’s circadian rhythm can shift substantially later, making teens feel alert at night and genuinely sleepy later in the morning. Unfortunately, early school schedules often work directly against that biology.
And simply sending a teenager to bed earlier doesn’t necessarily solve the problem.
In fact, spending long periods awake in bed can create frustration, increase sleep-related pressure, and sometimes teach the brain to associate the bed with wakefulness instead of sleep.
In this episode, we cover:
🌙 Why puberty turns many teens into night owls Learn why teenagers naturally start feeling sleepy later at night and why this shift can continue into young adulthood.
⏰ Why waking teenagers for school can be so difficult Morning struggles are not always a motivation problem. Sometimes the teenager’s internal clock is simply running later than the schedule demands.
🛏️ Why forcing an earlier bedtime can backfire Going to bed before the brain is ready for sleep can mean more time lying awake, more frustration, and potentially more conditioned arousal around bedtime.
✈️ Why weekends can create “social jet lag” Sleeping dramatically later on weekends and then returning to an early Monday schedule can feel like changing time zones without ever getting on a plane.
🧠 Circadian rhythm vs. sleep pressure We explain the two major systems influencing when teenagers feel sleepy and why daytime activity, light exposure, and consistent routines matter.
😴 When teen sleep problems may not actually be insomnia A delayed body clock can sometimes look like insomnia even when the teenager sleeps relatively well once allowed to follow a later schedule.
🤝 How parents can help without creating bedtime battles Instead of trying to control sleep directly, families can work together on routines that make healthy sleep more likely.
The goal is not to force sleep. It is to create the conditions that allow sleep to happen naturally. And if your teenager seems wide awake at midnight but impossible to wake at 6:30 AM, it may be worth thinking about their body clock before assuming they simply aren’t trying hard enough.
👇 Parents: what is the biggest sleep struggle in your house right now: getting your teen to bed, getting them off their phone, waking them for school, or weekend sleep-ins?

S6 144 - Sleepy on the Couch, Wide Awake in Bed? Here’s Why
Ever feel exhausted on the couch but suddenly wide awake the moment you get into bed? There’s a reason for that, and it may have less to do with how tired you are than with what your brain has learned to associate with your bed.
In this episode of Sleep Takeout, psychologist Dr. Daniel Baughn and sleep medicine physician Dr. Michelle Zetoony explain how chronic insomnia can become a learned pattern through classical and operant conditioning, and how CBT-I helps teach the brain to sleep again.
If your bedroom has become a place for worrying, clock-watching, trying to force sleep, scrolling, frustration, or lying awake for hours, your brain can gradually begin associating the bed with wakefulness and arousal instead of sleep.
That helps explain one of the strangest experiences in insomnia:
You’re falling asleep on the couch…but the second your head hits the pillow, you’re awake.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
🛋️ Why you can feel sleepy on the couch but alert in bed Sleepiness doesn’t simply disappear. Your bedroom itself can become a learned cue for alertness.
🧠 How classical conditioning can create “conditioned arousal” Just as the brain can learn associations in other areas of life, repeated nights of worrying, struggling, clock-checking, and trying to sleep can teach the brain that bed = wakefulness.
🔁 How operant conditioning can accidentally reinforce insomnia Behaviors that provide short-term relief, such as sleeping in, napping, going to bed extra early, staying in bed longer, or constantly checking the clock, can sometimes make sleep more difficult the following night.
🏨 Why some people with insomnia sleep surprisingly well in hotels A different environment may temporarily remove some of the learned cues associated with struggling to sleep at home.
⏰ Why clock-watching can become part of the insomnia cycle Seeing the time can trigger calculations, predictions, frustration, and anxiety: “If I fall asleep right now, I’ll only get five hours…”
👇 Have you ever been falling asleep on the couch only to become completely awake when you get into bed?
Tell us in the comments. It’s one of the most common experiences we hear from people struggling with insomnia.

S6 143 - Do Sleep Trackers Really Know How You Slept? Oura Ring, Apple Watch & the Science
Do your Oura Ring, Apple Watch, Fitbit, or Garmin actually know when you’re asleep, or are they making an educated guess?
In this episode of Sleep Takeout, psychologist Dr. Daniel Baughn and sleep medicine physician Dr. Michelle Zetoony break down what sleep trackers really measure, how those measurements compare with a clinical sleep study, and why your nightly sleep score may not be as precise as it looks.
We also examine the proposed class action lawsuit involving Oura’s sleep-stage accuracy claims, what Oura says in response, and what the research actually tells us about consumer sleep wearables.
You’ll learn:
💍 What the Oura Ring actually measures Movement, heart rate, heart-rate variability, temperature, oxygen-related signals, and other physiologic data can tell us a lot, but they are not the same thing as directly measuring brain activity.
🧠 How sleep is measured in a real sleep laboratory Michelle explains polysomnography, or PSG, including EEG brain waves, eye movements, muscle tone, breathing, oxygen levels, airflow, and other signals used to determine sleep and sleep stages.
⌚ Oura Ring vs. Apple Watch vs. Fitbit vs. Garmin Why consumer wearables may be quite useful for identifying broader sleep patterns while being less reliable when estimating exactly how much REM, deep sleep, or light sleep you obtained on a particular night.
⚖️ What is the Oura lawsuit about? We discuss allegations involving Oura’s marketing of sleep-stage accuracy, Oura’s response, and why comparing wearable algorithms with polysomnography is more complicated than it may initially seem.
📊 Why total sleep time may be more useful than sleep-stage percentages Wearables often perform better at estimating whether you are asleep or awake than determining exactly which stage of sleep you are experiencing.
😰 When sleep tracking becomes orthosomnia For some people, constantly checking sleep scores can increase anxiety about sleep and ironically make sleeping more difficult.
Our rule for sleep trackers
Use your sleep tracker as information, not instruction.
Instead of reacting to a single night's score, look for patterns over several weeks and pay attention to how you actually feel and function during the day.
A wearable can be a useful tool.
It should not become the judge of whether you had a “good” or “bad” night of sleep.
👇 Do you use an Oura Ring, Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin, or another sleep tracker? Tell us in the comments whether your sleep score usually matches how you actually feel the next day.

S6 142 - Does Chronic Insomnia Cause Dementia? What the Research Really Says
Can chronic insomnia increase your risk of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or long-term cognitive decline? And if you aren’t getting enough deep sleep, is your brain missing an important opportunity to recover?
In this episode of Sleep Takeout, Dan and Michelle tackle a question that creates a lot of anxiety for people struggling with sleep: Does chronic insomnia actually damage the brain?
Research has found important associations between poor sleep, cognitive decline, and neurodegenerative disease—but the relationship is far more complicated than saying that insomnia simply “causes” dementia.
Dan and Michelle break down what the research actually tells us about insomnia, deep sleep, memory, brain health, and dementia risk, including several possible pathways researchers are investigating.
They discuss:
• Why the connection between chronic insomnia and dementia is still unclear • The difference between association and causation in sleep research • How anxiety about memory loss can itself make insomnia worse • The role of genetics, including ApoE, in neurological risk • How cardiovascular health, metabolism, aging, and prior medical conditions can affect cognition • The glymphatic system and the theory that deep N3 sleep helps support the brain’s nighttime waste-clearance processes • Neuroinflammation and oxidative stress as possible links between poor sleep and brain health • Cerebrovascular factors that may contribute to cognitive decline • Chronic hyperarousal and the bidirectional relationship between anxiety and insomnia • Why medications and other health variables can complicate sleep-and-dementia research • How research funding and publication bias can influence the studies that receive attention • Why spending more time in bed does not necessarily mean getting more restorative sleep • How deep sleep naturally changes as we age • Why comparing your sleep to your younger self—or someone much younger—can create unnecessary frustration • Why consumer sleep trackers may not accurately measure N3 or “deep sleep” • How mindfulness and reducing the sleep-worry spiral can help you move toward better sleep
One of the most important takeaways from this episode is that worrying that every bad night of sleep is damaging your brain can create additional arousal that makes good sleep even harder to achieve.
Rather than chasing perfect sleep or obsessing over a wearable’s “deep sleep” score, focus on meaningful progress in your own sleep, daytime functioning, and overall health.

Why do women experience insomnia and disrupted sleep more often than men? In this episode of Sleep Takeout, Dan and Michelle explain how hormonal changes can affect sleep throughout a woman’s life—from puberty, PMS, and pregnancy to postpartum recovery, perimenopause, menopause, and beyond.
You’ll learn how estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone influence sleep quality, body temperature, mood, nighttime arousal, and the risk of obstructive sleep apnea. Dan and Michelle also discuss why women’s sleep problems have historically been underrecognized and why symptoms may change dramatically across different life stages.
In this episode, they explore:
• How menstrual-cycle changes can contribute to insomnia • Why PMS symptoms, pain, and mood changes can increase nighttime arousal • The connection between PCOS and sleep-disordered breathing • How sleep changes during each trimester of pregnancy • Postpartum sleep deprivation and maternal mental-health risks • The effects of caregiving and midlife stress on sleep • Why perimenopause can cause hot flashes, awakenings, and lighter sleep • How menopause may increase obstructive sleep apnea risk • Cooling strategies, consistent sleep habits, and dietary considerations • When to discuss hormone replacement therapy or other treatments with a qualified provider • How to advocate for specialized care when sleep problems are dismissed
Although women experience sleep difficulties at high rates, effective evaluation and treatment are available. Understanding the relationship between hormones and sleep can help women recognize symptoms earlier, ask better questions, and receive more individualized care.

S6 E139 - Is Your Bedroom Ruining Your Sleep? 4 Bedroom Fixes for Better Sleep
Is your bedroom secretly ruining your sleep? Your temperature, air quality, screens, lighting, and even your clock may be causing nighttime awakenings and making it harder for your brain to relax.
In this episode of Sleep Takeout, clinical psychologist Dr. Daniel Baughn and sleep medicine physician Dr. Michelle Zetoony walk you through a practical bedroom sleep environment audit designed specifically for adults.
You’ll learn how to create a “safe sleep space” that supports your circadian rhythm, reduces unnecessary sleep disruptions, protects respiratory health, and helps your brain associate the bedroom with relaxation rather than stimulation.
In this episode, we cover:
🌡️ Bedroom temperature: Why a cooler room may support your natural nighttime drop in core body temperature—and how to gradually work toward approximately 65–68°F if that feels comfortable for you.
🌬️ Air quality and respiratory health: How allergen-proof mattress and pillow encasements and a dedicated bedroom HEPA air purifier may reduce common nighttime irritants.
🔊 Sound control: How the consistent sound of an air purifier or white-noise device can help mask sudden noises that might interrupt your sleep.
📵 The digital airlock: Why removing phones, televisions, and other screens from the bedroom can reduce doom scrolling, time-checking, and conditioned alertness.
🌑 Total light mitigation: How blackout curtains, a comfortable eye mask, and strategic bed placement can create a darker environment for sleep.
⏰ Clock-checking: Why covering your clock and resisting the urge to calculate how much sleep you have left may reduce nighttime anxiety and frustration.
Which part of your bedroom sleep environment needs the biggest upgrade: temperature, air, screens, sound, or light? Let us know in the comments.

S6 138 - 10 Travel Sleep Tips: Beat the First-Night Effect Without Medication
Can’t sleep in hotels, vacation rentals, or unfamiliar bedrooms? These 10 medication-free travel sleep tips can help you overcome the “first-night effect” and sleep better away from home.
The first-night effect happens when part of your brain remains more alert in an unfamiliar environment—almost like a built-in nighttime security system. In this episode of **Sleep Takeout**, psychologist Dr. Daniel Baughn and sleep specialist Dr. Michelle Zetoony explain why this happens and share practical strategies for making an unfamiliar room feel safer, quieter, darker, cooler, and more sleep-friendly.
You’ll learn how to:
• Bring familiar sleep cues from home • Set the ideal bedroom temperature before bedtime • block hotel curtain gaps and unwanted light • Cover bright television, thermostat, and alarm-clock LEDs • Reduce unfamiliar sounds with white noise, brown noise, earplugs, or a fan • Re-create your normal nighttime routine while traveling • Time meals and alcohol to reduce sleep disruption • Visually declutter an unfamiliar bedroom • Inspect and adjust hotel bedding before you are exhausted • Use morning sunlight to support your internal body clock • Reduce sleep anxiety with a more flexible mindset • Practice 4-7-8 breathing when your mind and body feel activated
These strategies may be helpful whether you are sleeping in a hotel, staying with family, traveling for work, taking a vacation, or adjusting to a new environment.
Remember: one imperfect night does not mean the rest of your trip will be sleepless. Your brain often needs a little time to recognize that a new environment is safe.

Narcolepsy treatment may be entering a new era. In this episode of Sleep Takeout, Dan and Michelle explore how new orexin-targeted medications could change the treatment of narcolepsy type 1 by addressing the underlying orexin, also called hypocretin, deficiency rather than managing each symptom separately.
They explain what narcolepsy is, why it disrupts both daytime alertness and nighttime sleep, and how symptoms may include excessive daytime sleepiness, fragmented nighttime sleep, vivid dreams, hypnagogic or hypnopompic hallucinations, sleep paralysis, and cataplexy. Narcolepsy type 1 is associated with low orexin levels and includes cataplexy, while narcolepsy type 2 typically occurs without cataplexy.
Dan and Michelle also discuss orexin receptor agonists, an emerging class of narcolepsy medications designed to restore orexin signaling in the brain’s sleep-wake system. The episode highlights oveporexton, formerly TAK-861, an investigational oral orexin receptor 2 agonist being studied for narcolepsy type 1. Clinical trials have examined its effects on excessive daytime sleepiness, wakefulness, cataplexy, nighttime awakenings, and other symptoms.
They also review earlier research involving danavorexton, formerly TAK-925, an intravenous orexin receptor 2 agonist studied for its wake-promoting effects in people with narcolepsy type 1 and narcolepsy type 2.
Medication is only one part of narcolepsy management. This conversation also covers practical behavioral strategies that may help people manage symptoms and improve daily functioning, including:
• Brief, strategically scheduled naps • A consistent bedtime and wake time • Reducing stimulation before bedtime • Cognitive behavioral therapy for narcolepsy • Responding differently to discouraging thoughts about symptoms • Avoiding heavy meals and large amounts of sugar when they worsen daytime alertness • Working with a sleep medicine specialist to develop an individualized treatment plan
Whether you live with narcolepsy, support someone who does, or want to understand the future of sleep medicine, this episode offers an accessible look at narcolepsy symptoms, orexin medications, cataplexy treatment, CBT, strategic naps, nutrition, and emerging research.

S6 E135 - How to Beat Jet Lag in the Land of the Midnight Sun
Dan and Michelle discuss how traveling across time zones to northern destinations with very long summer daylight (e.g., Alaska, Canada, Iceland, Scandinavia) can disrupt circadian rhythm cues and worsen jet lag. They explain that the brain relies heavily on light, not clocks, to set alertness and sleepiness, and offer practical tips: immediately shift to destination time for meals, caffeine, naps, and sleep; consider travel direction (east vs. west) and use daylight/darkness strategically; “create your own sunset” by reducing light 1–2 hours before bed; pack darkness tools like an eye mask and curtain clips; keep naps short (about 20–30 minutes); stop caffeine at least 6 hours before bedtime and avoid using alcohol for sleep; build sleep pressure with daytime activity; use melatonin thoughtfully as a timing cue with medical guidance; and don’t catastrophize one imperfect night—aim for progress, not perfection.

S6 E134 - Welcome to the world of chocolate. On the surface people believe that it is all bad but there are some benefits to sleep with chocolate. Listen to Dr Zetoony discuss this in a short video. Next week Dr Dan and Dr Michelle will be back together discussing summer sleep schedules and other tips for improving sleep without pills.

S6 E133 - On today's episode Dr Zetoony is solo and recording an episode about where to start with sleep restriction therapy (SRT). This is a tool often used to improve sleep efficiency (how much of the time that you are in bed is spent with sleeping). Many people spend too much time "hoping" that sleep will come and SRT is the way sleep specialists will use to try to optimize the time in bed and have the patient build up the sleep pressure required for more continuous sleep.

S6 E132 - Can’t Sleep? Try This Meditation for Insomnia & Racing Thoughts
Can’t sleep? If you’re lying awake at night with racing thoughts, sleep anxiety, frustration, or middle-of-the-night wake-ups, this guided meditation for insomnia is designed to help you stop fighting sleep and relate to wakefulness with more calm, mindfulness, and self-compassion.
In this episode of Sleep Takeout, clinical psychologist Dr. Daniel Baughn guides you through a gentle Leaves on a Stream meditation adapted specifically for insomnia, nighttime anxiety, and difficulty falling back asleep. Rather than trying to force sleep, empty your mind, or “make yourself relax,” this practice helps you notice sleep-related thoughts, feelings, and body sensations without judgment — and then gently return your attention to the image of leaves floating down a stream.
This meditation may be especially helpful if you struggle with:
Difficulty falling asleep Waking up in the middle of the night Early morning awakenings Racing thoughts at bedtime Sleep anxiety Fear of not sleeping Frustration about being awake Checking the clock Worrying about tomorrow Feeling tense, restless, or alert in bed Insomnia-related body sensations Overthinking at night Trying too hard to sleep
This practice is rooted in mindfulness, self-compassion, anxiety treatment, and principles often used alongside Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia, also known as CBT-I. The goal is not to force sleep to happen. The goal is to soften the struggle with wakefulness, notice thoughts and sensations more gently, and give your mind something steady and compassionate to return to. If you are awake at 2 AM, 3 AM, or 4 AM wondering, “Why can’t I sleep?” or “How do I calm my racing thoughts at night?” this episode can help you practice a different response: noticing, allowing, and returning. Use this guided sleep meditation when you are lying in bed, during a nighttime awakening, before sleep, or anytime you want to practice letting go of anxious thoughts about sleep.
In this episode, you’ll practice:
Mindfulness for insomnia A Leaves on a Stream meditation Letting go of racing thoughts Noticing sleep anxiety without judgment Responding kindly to nighttime wakefulness Becoming aware of body sensations without fighting them Returning attention gently when the mind wanders Reducing the struggle around being awake
This episode is not about perfect sleep. It is about building a calmer, more compassionate relationship with your mind and body when sleep feels difficult.
00:00 Welcome and Setup 01:19 Visualize the Stream 02:13 Place Thoughts on Leaves 03:30 Handle Feelings and Sensations 05:52 Let Go of Control 07:20 When the Mind Hooks You 08:55 Kindness in the Night 09:46 Nonjudgmental Awareness 11:54 Closing Rest and Return

Costco Visit Part 2: Food Court ‘Healthy’ Picks, Bidets, and Why Wine Hurts Sleep
Dan and Michelle take listeners on Costco visit part two, exploring whether any food court items can be considered healthy for better sleep. They review menu options and calories, noting the 750-calorie chocolate cookie, 580-calorie cold brew mocha freeze, 840-calorie chicken bake, 850-calorie hot dog and soda, and a rotisserie chicken salad listed up to 840 calories, concluding the best options may be water or diet soda and advising people to eat before visiting. They also discuss Costco bidets (washlets), including features like heated seats and a built-in blow dryer. In the wine section, they highlight deals on red wines but explain alcohol doesn’t improve sleep: it can sedate initially then become activating after 3–4 hours, adds calories, can affect metabolism, and disrupts REM and restorative sleep.

Sleep Nation Goes Mattress Shopping: Sleep Number vs Tempur-Pedic (and an $11,000 Quote)
Michelle and Daniel share their “takeout” adventure after a conference, visiting Sleep Number and Ashley Furniture to test mattresses and power bases and learn about high-end sleep tech. They compare pricing, features, and sales experiences, noting Sleep Number’s customizable air “sleep system,” adjustable base options, and built-in sleep scoring—while raising concerns about sleep metrics worsening anxiety and orthosomnia. At Ashley, they focus on Tempur-Pedic (including Dan’s Lux Breeze firm), discuss expensive add-ons like $300 pillows and $50 pillowcases, and question marketing claims about health benefits. Dan inspects power base construction and warranties, gets a quote for a Tempur-Pedic ProBreeze/ProSmart setup totaling about $11,000, but decides not to buy, despite tempting financing and flashy features like a TV mount and snack trays.

Podfest 2026 Recap: AI, Networking, No Free Coffee & What’s Next for Sleep Takeout
Michelle and Dan recap their experience at Podfest 2026 from their hotel-room “studio,” joking about overpriced conference coffee, a pink sock mic cover, and switching from caffeine to “mom water” for a late-night vibe. They share key takeaways: this year focused more on content strategy and how AI can help clarify and improve workflow, and the conference also encouraged them to skip some lectures to network, leading to conversations with vendors and podcasters—including two guys who create comedy parodies of podcasts. They discuss pacing, burnout, discovering new conference spaces, and grabbing coffee and snacks from a concurrent gastrointestinal conference. Both would attend again, plan to bring their own coffee, and want listener comments and critiques across platforms. They tease a next episode featuring two store visits and what happened to Dan at one store.

Costco Pharmacy Sleep Aids: Melatonin, Antihistamines, Nasal Sprays & More (No Membership Needed)
Michelle and Daniel film from Costco’s pharmacy and health/beauty aisles, highlighting that you don’t need a Costco membership to use the pharmacy and that it participates with GoodRx, with reduced rates for GLP-1s, though hours are limited. They browse products and discuss how some relate to sleep, including melatonin (noting dosing concerns, regulation differences, and that it supports circadian shifting rather than directly causing sleepiness) and why antihistamines like diphenhydramine (Benadryl and “PM” cold/pain products) shouldn’t be used regularly for sleep due to side effects, especially with age. They compare nasal products (Afrin rebound risk, saline sprays, Flonase/Nasacort, and NeilMed rinses with distilled water cautions), mention Breathe Right strips for nasal breathing, review vapor inhalers/rub, and briefly discuss magnesium and methylated B-complex vitamins.

The Sleep Trap: Detox Foot Patches, Ortho-Insomnia, and the Illusion of Control
Michelle and Daniel discuss the “sleep trap,” where trying too hard to sleep and following increasingly regimented routines can worsen insomnia and anxiety. They demonstrate a detox foot patch product (including lavender and green tea versions), explain how it’s marketed to draw toxins out through the skin, and note it may feel relaxing but didn’t make them feel different despite the patch turning dark after use. The conversation shifts to how sleep-related products and sleep-tracking devices can fuel ortho-insomnia by creating worry from data and perceived negative consequences of poor sleep. They emphasize that improving sleep involves increasing sleep pressure and decreasing arousal through daytime activity and social engagement, and they caution against making any routine a requirement for sleep. They also mention being for hire, writing a book, and a playful idea about Sleep Takeout fortune cookies.
