A lot has been going in the last few weeks of the running world so Mel Sykes joins Ben and Gary to keep some kind of order and catch up with everything.

Camille Heron, Tom Evans and The Traitors all in one episode.

Unfortunately they all couldn't be in the same room but Ben has some headphones which makes things sound slightly better.

Please show your support of the show by rating and sharing with your running friends.

EP87 - Kendal Mountain Festival: 20+ Years Behind the Scenes with Steve Scott19 oct. 202601:16:09

Gary has gone AWOL this week, despite his beloved Manchester United managing to avoid defeat against Leeds United. So, Ben is flying solo, joined by fellow Leeds fan Steve Scott, Event Director of the world-famous Kendal Mountain Festival.

Steve has been at the helm for more than 20 years, so who better to talk about how the festival began, how it's grown and where it's heading next?

We get into the festival's biggest highlights, the challenges of organising an event of this scale and how its audience has changed over the years, including the huge growth of trail running.

From the Trail 10K and ultra races to SportsShoes' O-GAMES, the new Mackyard Ultra and the ever-expanding programme of trail running talks, films and sessions, we explore how running has become such an important part of the Kendal experience.

We also discuss the value of the SportsShoes partnership, the exciting line-up and activations planned for this year's festival, and what the future might look like, including the prospect of taking Kendal Mountain Festival to the south of the country for a summer event.

And, of course, there's the big question: will Ben ever deliver on his promise to get Kilian Jornet to Kendal?

If you're into trail running, mountain sports, outdoor films or the people behind the events we love, this one's well worth a listen.

Subscribe to RUNcensored, leave us a comment and share the episode with your running mates. Let us know your favourite Kendal Mountain Festival memories, what you'd like to see in the future and whether you reckon Ben can pull off the Kilian deal.

EP86 - Running Icks, Trail Communities & Working in the Industry13 oct. 202601:21:04

About bloody time! RUNcensored finally welcomes another female guest, as Ben and Gary sit down with Hannah Cawthra from the SportsShoes' Trail & Outdoors team.

A passionate trail runner with years of experience working with The North Face, HOKA and now a retailer, Hannah brings a brilliant insight into the running industry. We chat footwear, race events, brand marketing, making a career out of running and how the industry is changing. She also shares how she discovered trail running through her partner Darren, why community matters and the difference between a traditional running club and a running community.

Dreaming about working in the running industry?

Hannah's story is packed with useful insights for anyone hoping to turn their passion into a career. And if you've ever wondered what it's like working with Ben, well, Hannah has first-hand experience. Unfortunately for her, she has to do it every day.

We finish the episode with one of our favourite features as she blind ranks 10 Running Icks. Play along at home, see whether you agree with Hannah's choices and let us know which running icks we've missed in the comments.

EP85 - Altra Changed the Running World. Co-Founder Brian Beckstead Explains How06 oct. 202601:05:53

Brian Beckstead, co-founder of Altra, joins Gary and Ben for a proper RUNcensored deep dive into the story behind one of running’s most distinctive brands.

We start, naturally, with Premier League football and Brian’s highly suspicious decision to “randomly” choose a new team to support before getting into the story of Altra, its humble family beginnings, the challenges of starting a running brand from scratch and the ideas that changed the game, including Zero Drop and Altra’s famous roomy toe box.

We also talk about Altra’s influence on the running industry, the industry’s influence on Altra, the changing world of performance racing shoes and what comes next for the brand.

A proper conversation with one of the key figures behind one of running’s most recognisable brands.

EP84 - Running’s Weirdest Week? Tor de Géants, Hyrox & OnlyFans 29 sept. 202600:57:23

The weekly RUNcensored catch-up is back, starting with the usual football nonsense as Ben enjoys Leeds United’s flying start to the Premier League season while taking great pleasure in the struggles of Man United and Spurs.

Then it’s onto the running news, with Katharina Hartmuth’s record-breaking Tor de Géants run, the unfortunate Hyrox incident involving world record holder Joanna Wietrzyk, Sydney Sweeney, and RUNcensored favourite Camille Herron’s latest venture into OnlyFans.

And because we couldn’t possibly finish a normal running discussion without making things weird, there’s a Blind Ranking Top 5 to close things out. We’re keeping the subject secret, so you’ll have to listen to find out.

EP83 - WE ARE SO BACK... What Actually Happened at UTMB?22 sept. 202601:04:26

WE ARE SO BACK.

After a couple of months apart, Gary House and Ben Mounsey are finally back together in Ben’s living room for a proper RUNcensored catch up. Although, to be fair, it’s still not quite as long as it’s been since Spurs last won a football match.

There’s Gary’s many holidays, Ben’s trip to Sweden with the Kilian Jornet Foundation, trail restoration, and the ongoing mystery of whether Ben was stood up or set up by Gary and Kilian Jornet.

Then it’s all about UTMB Mont-Blanc 2026.

Fresh from Chamonix, the lads look back at paragliding into town, filming with Tom Evans and Hayden Hawks, photoshoots in the mountains, race coverage, RUNcensored-style filming, plenty of Aperol Spritz and all the chaos of the biggest week in trail running.

They also get into the future of UTMB, following comments from the new mayor of Chamonix about reducing the scale of the event and protecting the valley’s infrastructure and fragile ecosystem.

The lads are finally back together. Expect the usual laughs, running chat, questionable decisions and honest conversation.

EP82 - Ultra trail running stories | From OCC to UTMB, trail runners tell their race experience17 sept. 202600:16:19

This week on RUNcensored, we’re doing things a little differently.

While out in Chamonix during UTMB week with our series sponsor Sportsshoes.com, Gary House caught up with runners who had just completed some of the toughest trail races in the world.

Fresh from the finish line, Gary asks a simple question: what does it really take to get around these races?

We hear from two UTMB finishers about their experience of tackling 171km around Mont Blanc and the incredible support they received along the way from the crowds and local communities.

Then there’s a couple who somehow still have an unbelievable amount of energy after completing PTL – around 300km of seriously tough mountain terrain.

Pedro and Robbie share the story of travelling far and wide to fulfil their dream of completing OCC, while Ingrid talks about progressively working her way through the distances before finally taking on the ultimate challenge: UTMB.

No elite race analysis this time. Just honest, first-hand stories from ordinary runners doing extraordinary things in the mountains.

EP81 - Francesco Puppi Is Your New Trail Running Agony Aunt 08 sept. 202601:00:15

No House, No Party… or is it?

Gary House is taking a week off, so Ben Mounsey is joined by HOKA athlete Francesco Puppi for a special SportsShoes episode of RUNcensored.

This week, it’s 'Dear Puppi', where trail runners have problems and Francesco has answers. From first-time 100K runners and ultra fuelling to heat, altitude, support crews, chafing and choosing the right trail shoes, Francesco tackles questions from the SportsShoes community.

We also get into Francesco’s life in Como, his Italian roots, his relationship with fellow runner 'Rita', music and running, the best European races to have on your radar and whether his worldwide fanbase really should be called 'Puppies'.

And, of course, there are a couple of mentions of a certain Gary House… because apparently you can’t keep him away from RUNcensored for very long!

Expect plenty of laughs, some questionable advice and, surprisingly, plenty of genuinely useful answers from one of the biggest names in trail running right now.

EP80 - UTMB Special with Hayden Hawks & Tom Evans - Live from Chamonix27 août 202601:24:02

RUNcensored sponsored by SportsShoes.com goes live from Chamonix for a special episode recorded during UTMB Mont-Blanc 2026, with two of the biggest names in international trail and ultra running: Hayden Hawks and Tom Evans.

With Chamonix filling up and the trail running world descending on the Alps, hosts Gary House and Ben Mounsey sit down with Hayden and Tom to talk all things UTMB, racing in the mountains, preparation, pressure and what it takes to compete at the very highest level of ultrarunning.

But there’s a twist. Neither Hayden nor Tom is racing at UTMB this year, giving them a very different perspective on race week. Instead of tapering, resting and preparing for 100 miles, they’re right in the middle of the media whirlwind, with interviews, appearances and responsibilities filling their calendars. We get into what that contrast feels like and whether being busy during the biggest week in the sport makes it easier or harder to watch from the sidelines.

We also look beyond the racing itself, discussing the huge impact UTMB week has on Chamonix as a town, the pressures that come with hosting one of the world’s biggest trail running events, and how UTMB and the wider sport can become more inclusive and accessible to minority and underrepresented groups.

And there’s more. Tom has a surprise challenge lined up in the UK next month, but exactly what he has planned is another story...

Expect the usual RUNcensored mix of serious running chat, strong opinions and plenty of laughs, recorded live in the heart of Chamonix during the biggest week in the trail running and ultra running calendar.

This special episode is sponsored by SunGod, performance eyewear built for the mountains, trails and beyond.

EP79 - Lakeland 100 Nearly Broke Mel… Zoom Nearly Broke Us!28 juil. 202601:17:46

It nearly didn't happen...

After battling through what might be the longest Zoom setup in podcast history (seriously, some people could've run a 10K quicker), Gary House and Ben Mounsey are joined by regular guest Mel Sykes for another unfiltered episode of RUNcensored.

Fresh from the Lakeland 100 weekend, Mel talks us through one of the biggest trail running events in the UK. There's no sugar coating her DNF either, although Gary and Ben don't exactly offer much sympathy...

Before all that, there's plenty of catching up. Gary returns from an 'Oasish' festival weekend, while Ben shares stories from a luxury spa break in the Dolomites involving a massage therapist called Antonio and what might just be the world's smallest paper pants.

The conversation then turns to the Lakeland 50 and Lakeland 100, discussing the standout performances, race winners, the incredible atmosphere, why the event continues to attract the UK's strongest ultra runners and whether it's still one of the toughest races on the calendar.

To round things off, RUNcensored's Top 5 gets a makeover as Ben puts Gary and Mel through a blind ranking challenge featuring the most annoying social media habits around race day.

If you love trail running, ultras, honest race chat and plenty of laughs along the way, this one's for you.

EP78 - Betty Bergstrand on Racing, Adventure & Life on the Salomon Team 14 juil. 202600:42:59

RUNcensored goes live in front of an audience for the very first time.

Recorded at Love Trails Festival 2026, Gary House and Ben Mounsey are joined by Salomon mountain runner Betty Bergstrand for an honest and entertaining conversation covering elite trail running, travelling the world as a professional athlete, and the experiences that have shaped her career so far.

Betty reflects on winning the 2024 Salomon UK Golden Trail Series, racing internationally, growing up in a family with deep roots in fell and mountain running, and embracing adventure both on and off the trails. The conversation also explores the continued growth of trail running, the opportunities it brings, and the realities of competing at the highest level.

Throw in stories from Love Trails, plenty of laughs, and an important discussion about the legendary Beer Mile, and you've got another classic RUNcensored episode.

If you enjoy the episode, don't forget to follow, rate and share the podcast.

EP77 - He Quit London Finance to Build the UK's Most Innovative Ultra Races07 juil. 202601:27:25

This week Gary and Ben welcome Charlie Mackenzie, co-founder of Mackyard Events, to the RUNcensored podcast.

Charlie talks about discovering trail running after moving back to Kendal during Covid, taking on the Bob Graham Round, falling in love with the Lakeland fells and why the friendships and experiences matter far more than finishing with a fast time.

The conversation also explores the growth of ultra running and backyard ultras, before Charlie explains why he's paused a successful career in London finance to launch Mackyard Events alongside his brother Robin. Their aim? To create disruptive, experience-first events that offer something genuinely different for runners.

It's an open, honest and entertaining chat covering trail running, adventure, community, entrepreneurship and the future of UK ultra running - with plenty of laughs from Gary and Ben along the way.

EP76 - The Biggest Weekend in Trail Running? The Triple Crown Delivers30 juin 202601:14:30

Is this the biggest weekend in trail running?

This week Gary and Ben look back on what we're calling trail running's Triple Crown weekend, with Western States 100, Marathon du Mont Blanc and Lavaredo by UTMB all landing on the same weekend.

The lads break down the incredible racing at Western States, where the GOAT Kilian Jornet returned to take on Jim Walmsley, Francesco Puppi, Vincent Bouillard and one of the deepest fields ever assembled. With cooler temperatures than usual, records were always going to be under threat and the racing absolutely delivered.

They also head to Chamonix for Marathon du Mont Blanc, where Tove Alexandersson once again reminded everyone why she might be the most dominant athlete in mountain sports, while the men's race produced a fascinating battle of its own.

Ben reports back from Lavaredo after spending the week with La Sportiva, including a factory tour, an interview with CEO Giulia Delladio and his own outing in the Lavaredo 20k where he somehow came home with silverware for first old guy.

There's also discussion around the Prodigio Pro, the ongoing tight compression shorts debate, England's World Cup chances and plenty of laughs along the way.

And finally, the lads tackle one of running's most divisive questions: should you ever cross a finish line hand in hand? Gary has some thoughts.

EP75 - Will Anyone Ever Break This Record? The King of Kilnsey - Mick Hawkins 23 juin 202601:27:30

A 44-year-old fell running record. Legendary rivalries. England and Great Britain vests. And one of the most talented athletes Yorkshire has ever produced.

This week Gary and Ben welcome Mick "The Hawk" Hawkins to the RUNcensored Podcast.

Best known as the King of Kilnsey, Mick still holds the Kilnsey Crag Fell Race record of 7 minutes 35 seconds, set back in 1982. More than four decades later, nobody has managed to get close enough to remove his name from the history books.

The lads chat to Mick about his journey into running, the BOFRA scene, training in the Yorkshire Dales, his battles with fell running greats including Kenny Stuart, and the characters who shaped an unforgettable era of the sport.

They also dive into the amateur versus professional divide that dominated athletics during the 1980s, Mick's experiences representing England and Great Britain 27 times, competing at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, almost breaking the four-minute mile, and setting a treadmill world record that disappeared almost as quickly as it arrived.

A fascinating look back at British fell running through the eyes of one of its true legends.

Records smashed, mountain champs & Nike ACG on the fells 🎙️

This week on RUNcensored we’re covering a bit of everything from the world of trail and mountain running.

We head behind the scenes at the Centurion South Downs Way 100 — talking about what it’s really like creating media at a 100-mile race, capturing the suffering, the emotion, and the moments that tell the real story.

And this year delivered something special… records were smashed in both the men’s and women’s races, with performances that raised the bar once again.

We also chat about the recent European Mountain Running Championships, what stood out from the racing, and where the sport is heading.

Plus, we get out on the fells with Nike ACG, testing kit in the environment it was made for and talking about the crossover between outdoor culture, performance and mountain running.

EP73 - What Happens Behind the Scenes of an Elite Trail Running Team? ASICS Basecamp 02 juin 202600:46:39

What does it actually take to support some of the world's best trail runners?

Gary and Ben are live from the Chamonix Valley with SportsShoes for a special episode recorded at the launch of the new ASICS Basecamp.

Joining them is Laurent Ardito, the man responsible for overseeing athlete strategy at ASICS. From supporting elite athletes with nutrition, sports psychology, physiotherapy and performance testing, to managing one of the biggest trail running teams in the sport, Laurent shares what goes on behind the scenes of professional trail running.

The conversation explores the brand-new ASICS Basecamp in Les Houches, an athlete-focused facility built to support runners training and racing in the mountains around Chamonix. They also discuss the development of ASICS trail products, the rapid growth of trail running, the increasing standard of competition, and some of Laurent's favourite races.

Plus, while in Chamonix, the lads couldn't resist attempting their own version of Satisfy's famous Circle Pit challenge.

A brilliant insight into the world of elite trail running and the people helping athletes perform at their best.

EP72 - Mel Sykes returns to share all about Ultra Trail Snowdonia by UTMB 26 mai 202601:05:47

Rule no.1 of RUNcensored Club - we don’t do podcasts on Zoom.

Rule no.2 of RUNcensored Club - we definitely don’t do podcasts on Zoom.

Well… this week we broke the rules.

The lads have been out in Chamonix filming their own version of the Circle Pit with Satisfy, and rather than leave you hanging another week, we’ve patched together a remote episode to celebrate one thing we couldn’t ignore - Mel Sykes absolutely smashing it at UTS.

Mel returns to the pod to talk through one of the biggest performances of her running career and how it earned her a place on the CCC start line in Chamonix. The weather, the conditions, the suffering, the highs, the lows and the weird emotional rollercoaster that ultra running seems to drag all of us through eventually.

We also touch on missing Quid Games in Keswick, throw together a very loose “Top 3”, rather than a “Top 5”, because standards have clearly slipped, and generally chat the usual amount of nonsense along the way.

Audio quality? Slightly dodgy.

Running chat? Still elite.

EP71 - London Marathon Hype, Nike Controversy & Pub Strava Segments12 mai 202601:13:21

Nike’s “Runners Welcome. Walkers Tolerated.” campaign split opinion in the running world recently - and Gary and Ben are diving straight into it.

This episode of RUNcensored is a proper running current affairs chat covering the London Marathon build up, modern running culture, The 'House of SportsShoes’ Shoreditch pop-up, city running, Strava segments in Wetherspoons, ultras, coaching, and the 5 greatest occasions for a beer.

The lads also tackle another round of ChatGBT listener questions, including:

  • How to know if you could run an ultra
  • Dream running coaches
  • Best race views ever
  • One race they’d run again at peak fitness
  • Ben’s idea to collab with Strava and Wetherspoons

Honest, unfiltered running chat as always.

EP70 - Are £40 Lidl carbon running shoes any good?05 mai 202601:23:34

Cheap carbon shoes, influencer trends, and some properly unfiltered running opinions.

Gary and Ben are back with another mixed bag episode covering everything from Ben’s public apology over a missed yellow sticker bargain to the rise of budget carbon-plated running shoes and whether they’re actually worth it.

They chat about Jimmy Gressier’s latest European 5K record, the growing competition in the super shoe market, and why they’re still sceptical about £40 “performance” options from Lidl. There’s also discussion around influencer culture in running, smart (and not so smart) race hacks, and the balance between cost and quality when it comes to kit.

The ChatGBT segment dives into the BPN Backyard Ultra, the debate around women in ultra running, plus listener questions on training, plyometrics, and the maddest kit they’ve seen out on the trails.

The episode finishes with Gary and Ben picking their top 5 RUNcensored episodes so far, featuring some standout guests from the podcast’s history.

Raw, honest, and very much off-script.

EP69 - Inside The Fellsman: Britain’s Most Historic Trail Running Ultra? 28 avr. 202600:58:51

Fresh off the back of the Fellsman Ultra, Gary and Ben are joined by friend of the podcast Rich Lazenby for a very tired, slightly broken, and heavily sleep-deprived episode.

The lads dive into what makes the Fellsman one of the UK’s most iconic ultra distance trail running events: brutal heat across the Yorkshire Dales, military-level Scout organisation, incredible checkpoint support, navigation decisions, cramp, fatigue, and the unique atmosphere that keeps runners coming back year after year.

There’s also the usual nonsense along the way including empty Spar shelves, missing San Pellegrino and accusations that producer Chris Davies is avoiding the pod because of football results.

Ben also found an old, dishelleved carrot in the back of the fridge that looks (and probably feels) just like Gary right now.

A proper post-race debrief from one of Britain’s most historic ultras.

EP68 - Community Over Competition? SheUltra™ & Real Running Talk21 avr. 202601:06:46

It starts with football, drifts into OAP care duties, and somehow lands on one of the most important trail events in the UK right now.

Gary and Ben chat Fellsman prep, crewing plans, and then get stuck into SheUltra™ in North Wales - nearly 2,500 women, brutal conditions and a proper community-first approach to racing. No ego, no obsession with times, just people showing up for something bigger.

Along the way there’s Spar reviews, Wetherspoons action, and a look at the recent RunThrough Lake District Ultra which served as a selection race for the middle-distance GB team.

Unfiltered running chat. As always.

EP67 - London Marathon Scandal and Top 5 Sports Docs you need to watch07 avr. 202600:59:26

Another Chat GBT episode - where the listeners ask the questions and Gary and Ben take it wherever it goes.

From early chat about weather, Covid and Gary’s obsession with sniffing freshly made wooden gates, things eventually get into running - including a proper discussion around the TCS London Marathon potentially moving to a two-day format and what that means for the sport.

Listener questions cover the Leeds United running kit, thoughts on brand collaborations, whether RUNcensored would ever do one, and a push to get Hannah Cox from Project Salt Run on the podcast.

Gary also gives an update on his Fellsman training, and the lads share which running Instagram accounts they actually enjoy following.

The episode finishes with the TOP 5 feature - this week focusing on the best running and ultra-related YouTube videos and documentaries (with a few curveballs thrown in).

Looking ahead, RUNcensored Live heads to Oswestry on 17th April, and both Gary and Ben will be at She Ultra on 11th April, organised by Huw Williams - with Gary on socials and Ben bringing the Barnsley Briefcase.

EP66 - Ourea Events Collapse, Roadkill Kebabs & Trail Running Talk31 mars 202601:10:15

A proper mixed bag this week - from trail running headlines to full-on orienteering chaos in Edinburgh, plus a look behind the curtain at brand-led running trips.

Gary and Ben chat through some of the latest stories, including a bizarre Strava incident involving a French aircraft carrier heading to Iran and a standout canicross 5K world record. There’s also a measured look at recent developments around Ourea Events and what it could mean for races like the Northern Traverse, with early signs of runners already heading back out on the route thanks to James Elson stepping in.

Then it’s onto the Old Town Showdown in Edinburgh, presented by SportsShoes' Quid Games and British Orienteering. Expect fast decisions, chaotic racing, clever course design from Edinburgh University Orienteering Club, and a rapid 30-minute winning run from Finley Todd.

There’s chat around local advantage, prize strategy, and the unique atmosphere these events create, plus a few hints about what might be coming next

Ben also shares his experience testing the Mizuno Neo Accera in Gran Canaria and gives his take on modern trail shoe tech and brand launch events.

Real talk, real running, no filter.

EP65 – Nasal Strips, Dirty Runners & VK Training | Chat GBT Running Q&A24 mars 202600:54:52

How dirty is too dirty after a race? And would you really go straight from a fell run to a wedding without showering?

In this Chat GBT episode (Gary Ben Trails), we answer your questions - from whether performance nasal strips actually work, to wearing new shoes straight out of the box, and what it really takes to train for VKs (Vertical Kilometre races).

It quickly descends into some properly grim stories from the trail and fell running world - including fell runner James Logue’s infamous towel that’s somehow survived decades without seeing a wash.

We also get into running icks, Ben’s chaotic messaging habits across every platform going, apps beyond Strava like MapRun and Navi Tabi, and finish with a Top 5 guilty pleasures in running list that gets weird fast.

Unfiltered, honest, and exactly what you’ve come to expect from RUNcensored.

EP64 - The Man Behind Dot Watching | OpenTracking, The Spine Race & Trail Safety17 mars 202601:36:53

Ever wondered who’s responsible for all those little moving dots during races like The Spine Race?

In this episode of RUNcensored we’re joined by James Thurlow from OpenTracking – the company behind the GPS tracking used at many of the UK’s biggest trail and ultrarunning events including The Spine Race, Northern Traverse, The Fellsman and Arc of Attrition.

James explains how OpenTracking grew from tracking small cycling events to managing thousands of devices across major endurance races. We talk about the evolution of dot watching, why reliable tracking matters for safety and race management, and how the technology has changed the way races operate.

We also get into some of the stories behind the system: runners accidentally taking trackers home, devices running out of battery in the early days, messages that convinced runners not to quit, and the moment OpenTracking had to shut down messaging during The Spine Race after abuse was directed at runner Sarah Porter.

It’s a behind-the-scenes look at the infrastructure that now underpins modern ultrarunning.

If you’ve ever refreshed a tracker map at 3am during The Spine Race, this one’s for you.

Gary House and Ben Mounsey share gripping, funny, and sometimes terrifying stories from the UK trails and fells. From hypothermia in races to rescuing lost hikers and strangers in the Lake District, this episode is packed with essential lessons in kit, preparation, and accountability.

And one of them (guess who!) also recounts the unforgettable moment of waking up in an emergency tent full of semi-naked men.

EP54 - We Handed Out Trail Running’s Biggest Awards of 2025 👀30 déc. 202501:36:30

It’s the final episode of the year and we’re wrapping things up with our completely unofficial RUNcensored Awards, looking back at the biggest moments in trail running and ultra running in 2025.

We start with a discussion around trail shoes and trainers, talking through brands regularly seen on UK and European trails including Salomon, HOKA, Nike, adidas, La Sportiva and Altra, before moving on to the events, performances and people that defined the year. The conversation covers major races and formats such as UTMB, Ultra-Trail Snowdonia Eryri, Trans Gran Canaria, the London Marathon, the SHE Ultra, and the ever-growing popularity of the Backyard Ultra.

Throughout the episode we hand out the RUNcensored Awards, including trail shoe of the year, best trail event, best running influencer, best performance, and trail runner of the year. Along the way we reference and discuss standout athletes from across the UK and international trail scene, including Sarah Perry, Anna Llewellyn, Jack Scott, Henrietta Alban, Holly Stables, Hugh Chatfield, Abby Hall, and Hannah Cox, as well as broader comparisons to endurance mindsets through figures like Alex Honnold.

There’s a deeper discussion around what it really takes to be an ultra endurance athlete, with particular credit given to Sarah Perry following an incredible Backyard Ultra performance and record-setting time. Gary also shares honest advice on social media and content creation, talks about the impact of the Hardest Geezer, and outlines his own plans for 2026, including chasing a sub-2:30 London Marathon.

Chris brings ChatGPT into the mix to name the best trail runner, best UK trail runner, and a breakthrough athlete for 2025, before we wrap things up by naming our podcast of the year and reflecting on another big year for the RUNcensored Podcast and the wider trail running community.

EP53 - The Christmas Episode. Xmas Films, Chocolates and Chris' first Ultra23 déc. 202501:15:36

🎄 We didn’t plan this Christmas Episode… and somehow that made it even better.

Episode 53 of the RUNcensored Podcast is our official Christmas Episode and also marks one full year of the podcast. What started as a relaxed festive catch up quickly turned into one of our most honest, funny and reflective conversations so far.

We kick things off with festive chaos, chatting about new van wheels, Christmas jumpers, retro football kits, dog clothing, terrible Christmas trees and vegan flapjacks. From there, it’s onto Christmas presents, including Ben’s now traditional jumpers and Rich Gill’s very posh shower gel gifts.

At the heart of the episode is a look back on one year of RUNcensored, with Rich Gill returning to help us reflect on how the podcast has grown, the guests that have stood out, and the unexpected impact it’s had within the trail running and ultra running community.

There’s a big, open conversation about Chris completing his first ultra, what it took physically and mentally, and how the support of the running community played a huge role. We also talk about what it’s like experiencing the podcast as a listener, why in person recordings feel so different to remote podcasts, and why seeing people share photos of themselves listening on long runs and trail runs genuinely means the world to us.

We reflect on some standout moments from the past year, including Ben’s experience creating reels at UTMB in Chamonix, Gary’s evolving relationship with coaching, and why the podcast has become an important outlet for honest conversation beyond training plans and race results.

There’s also time for a nod to Jacob Tonkin and the film George, a chat about how we choose guests for the podcast, a chaotic ranking of Celebration chocolates, and a final debate over the best Christmas films.

A festive, messy and reflective episode that celebrates trail running, ultra running and the people who make this community what it is. Thank you to everyone who’s supported RUNcensored over the past year.

EP52 - Christmas Running, Mince Pies & Staying Fit Over the Holidays16 déc. 202501:01:23

Episode 52 – Christmas-Themed Chat GBT

Episode 52 of the RUNcensored Podcast is a Christmas-themed Chat GBT episode, with no guest this week and no real agenda, just a relaxed chat fuelled by festive questions and running banter. Gary, Ben and Chris sit down for an end of year catch up and work their way through a mix of running, Christmas, and slightly ridiculous listener style questions.

The episode starts with the usual waffle and catch up, touching on illness, orienteering, and general December fatigue, before leaning into the festive themes. The lads debate the best Christmas deodorant gift packs, share tips for keeping fit over Christmas without overthinking it, and discuss how runners can balance training with food, family time and switching off.

There’s plenty of light hearted running chat throughout, including whether a RUNcensored Christmas run or party for listeners could ever happen, how long you could realistically run fuelled purely on mince pies, and what to buy a runner for Christmas when they already seem to have everything they need.

The conversation also covers festive races, Christmas Day runs, winter running traditions, and the strange rituals runners seem to develop at this time of year. As expected, Chris doesn’t escape without taking some stick, with a festive question involving Tottenham Hotspur, Christmas decorations, and recent trophy counts.

The episode wraps up with Christmas themed running traditions, festive food ideas using leftovers, and a relaxed outro.

A fun, informal episode full of running chat, festive nonsense, and the kind of conversations that usually happen mid run or post run at this time of year.

EP51 - The Chaos We Didn’t Expect at Kendal Mountain Film Festival09 déc. 202501:34:58

In this episode Gary and Ben sit down for a full, unfiltered debrief of their weekend at Kendal Mountain Film Festival— a mix of trail running chaos, filmmaking challenges, questionable decision-making and the kind of moments that only ever seem to happen at Kendal.

They start with the usual warm-up waffle, Gary battling what feels like every illness under the sun, and Ben proudly turning up in his Leeds shirt before the conversation shifts into everything they experienced across the festival. From SportShoes’ involvement and the importance of creating a genuinely positive experience for runners, to the energy around The North Face stand and the iconic Kendal Yurt, the episode gives a clear picture of what it’s like working at one of the biggest outdoor festivals in the world.

Gary and Ben talk through the films that hit them hardest this year: Tala’s emotional Pyrenees crossing, Josh’s beautifully shot mountain film, Elsie’s moving story about Alzheimer’s in Cornwall, and Steph Case’s powerful exploration of pregnancy and IVF. Each film sparked conversations that carried through the whole weekend.

There’s also plenty of orienteering chat after taking part in the Kendal session, including how sharp the GB team really are, the different checkpoint styles, and the ski slope section that caused its fair share of problems. Gary throws himself into QuidGames too, and gives a full breakdown of how competitive it actually gets, what he learned from the elites, and the ideas being thrown around for next year’s version — including the brilliantly chaotic “Run Like Haggis.”

They recap the Kendal 10K and 50K races, the Saturday film screenings, the Salomon party, and the late-night characters they always seem to meet at these events — including Brian the Oasis designer and a few new faces who added to the fun.

Gary also reflects on filming across the whole weekend, trying to capture the scale and atmosphere of the festival, and why the experience has finally convinced him to start taking orienteering training more seriously. The episode wraps up with thoughts on how Kendal could grow in 2025 and the kind of competitions they’d love to introduce.

A relaxed, honest and funny look inside the busiest weekend of the trail running and adventure film calendar.

EP50 - AI vs Runners: ChatGPT Puts Ben & Gary to the Test 25 nov. 202500:54:00

Episode 50 marks a huge milestone for RUNcensored — and to celebrate, we handed the mic to ChatGPT. Yes, really. The world’s most talkative AI became our producer for the day, coming up with all the questions for Ben and Gary… and the results were equal parts insightful and ridiculous.

Over the last 49 episodes, RUNcensored has featured some of the biggest names in trail running, ultra running, and fell running — from elite athletes like Holly Wootten and Tom Evans, to experts in nutrition, psychology, and navigation. In this special AI-powered chat, Ben and Gary reflect on everything they’ve learned (and a few things they probably should have learned by now).

💬 Expect big questions and bigger laughs:

  • What’s the hardest mental barrier you’ve had to push through in a race?
  • Which nutrition myth did you finally ditch after speaking with experts like Paul?
  • What can today’s trail runners learn from traditional club running culture?
  • Which guest would you want to coach you for a season — and why?
  • Who’s more likely to get lost mid-race: Gary with his GPX or Ben with his map?
  • And the RUNcensored Awards — who wins Best Rant, Funniest Story, and Most Unexpected Guest Moment?

It’s a hilarious and heartfelt look back on the journey so far — from mountain marathons to muddy mishaps — all through the lens of AI-generated chaos.

If you love trail running, ultra marathons, mountain running, or just the kind of unfiltered running chat you can’t get anywhere else, this one’s for you.

EP49 - The Fell Runner Who Turned Grief Into Grit | Jacob Tonkin & “George”18 nov. 202501:06:35

Fell runner, orienteer and canicross athlete Jacob “Tonk” Tonkin joins Ben and Gary for an unforgettable conversation about running, resilience, and the power of the bond between a runner and his dog.

Jacob opens up about life on the fells of Keswick, the mental games of fell racing, and taking on epic challenges like the anti-clockwise Bob Graham Round and the Frog Graham — running and swimming across the Lake District.

But his story goes much deeper. Jacob speaks candidly about living with Crohn’s disease, the loss of his beloved dog George, and how the short film “George” (created by James Appleton) captured both their friendship and his fight to keep going.

With honesty, humour and heart, Jacob shares how running, dogs, and the mountains helped him rebuild his life — and why he now runs purely for himself.

Ben dives into his experiences at the British Fell Relay Championships and Trofeo Vanoni in Italy — talking about the atmosphere, navigation challenges, and why he keeps going back year after year. He also shares what’s next for the UK trail scene with new teams and more women joining the sport.

Tom Evans & Ruth Crofts secret UTMB nutrition strategy

This week on RUNcensored, Gary and Ben sit down with Paul Booth — Lead Nutritionist for Salomon and Sports Nutrition Researcher at the Leeds Beckett University — to explore how elite fuelling strategies can transform the way we all train and race.

EP45 - How Holly Wootten Broke the Dragon’s Back Record | 1st Female, 2nd Overall21 oct. 202501:32:35

In this episode, Gary and Ben are joined by Holly Wootten, who made history at the 2025 Dragon’s Back Race®, finishing first woman and second overall, setting a new women’s record in the process.

The Dragon’s Back is one of the toughest mountain races in the world — six relentless days running the length of Wales, from Conwy Castle to Cardiff Castle, across wild ridgelines, brutal climbs and unpredictable weather. Holly talks us through the highs, lows and everything in between.

She shares how she approached the race with a plan to compete with the men, how she handled the pressure of leading, and the mental and physical battles that come with stage racing. From camp life and gear setup to racing injured on the final day, this is a story of sheer determination and belief.

Holly’s performance was extraordinary — 50:46:16, over three hours faster than the previous women’s record set by Lisa Watson in 2022. She dominated from the start, finishing just behind men’s winner David Parrish, and ahead of a strong field including Jodie Gauld and Lianne Van Dijk.

The RUNcensored crew are back from their break with a brand new episode — and it’s a big one.

Gary, Ben and Chris pick up right where they left off with the usual mix of banter, stories and raw honesty about the world of trail, fell and ultra running.

☕ General chat – The lads ease back in with holiday catch-ups and even a heated debate about coffee machines.

🧭 Ben on orienteering – After Kay from British Orienteering joined the pod earlier this year, listeners have been inspired to try it for themselves. Ben shares his recent experiences at orienteering events and why the sport is such a good crossover for trail runners.

🎬 Events on the horizon – Updates on Quid Games 2 and the Kendal Mountain Festival.

🏔 Gary’s Tor des Géants – Gary takes us through his week in Italy, from supporting friends who were hit by a virus to his own meticulous preparation. He then opens up about how that same virus caught up with him during the 330km race, forcing him to withdraw. The conversation dives into the physical toll, the emotional impact of a DNF, and what comes next.

🌍 World Championships chat – The lads break down the wide range of races on offer this year, from the uphill to the short and long ultras. They ask whether too many options are diluting the fields, talk about prize money, and compare it all to the UTMB.

👟 Athletes and results – Spotlight on Rémi Bonnet, predictions on who might win, Ben reeling off results and finish times, and a frank chat on funding, sponsorship and media coverage.

This one’s got everything: big race talk, personal stories, and the kind of unfiltered banter that makes RUNcensored different.
