| You Might Like: My Substack | 20 Jan 2025 | 00:12:59 | |
As I've gotten older I've found myself disliking the constant bombardment of social media feeds and enjoying signing up to the newsletters of people who's work I enjoy. I genuinely look forward to them each month. Also, with the recent potential ban of TikTok it's reminded me that while social media platforms rise and fall like empires, having a good mailing list is rock-solid (like investing in the housing market). Each month I'll be including stuff like upcoming gigs, episodes of the podcast that were released as well as audio snippets, one-liners I'm working on, comedy special reviews, media I've seen that I'd like to recommend, video games I'm playing, basically whatever's bringing me joy at the time. So if you'd like to read along, give me a follow at taylorruddle.substack.com where once a month I'll post a new article with a voiceover option to listen to, it's basically a secret episode of the podcast!

| 24. Contact Juggling w/ Steve Wilbury | 20 Aug 2023 | 00:41:47 | |
Today I am joined by Steve Wilbury. Steve is an international award winning magician, stand up comedian and children's entertainer based up in Nelson. I first met Steve last year when we performed on the Kids Day Out Variety Show together. I think I was the first person to do stand-up to children on that tour. Steve and I stayed in touch and have gigged together sporadically since. Today Steve offered to teach me all about Contact Juggling, a version of juggling that I had no idea was so rare of a skill, as well as relatively recent. We get into the history of contact juggling, as well as Steve's ambition to create an act that contributes to the art form. We delve into all sorts of magic and comedy geekery throughout, so if you're into those, you're in for a treat! Today I sit down with my very good friend Hamish and we talk about the ideas of FOMO - Fear Of Missing Out and FOBI - Fear Of Being Included. The conversation fairly quickly becomes one about a lot of my personal anxieties as well as the situations in which Hamish feels FOBI rather than FOMO. It's a great little lighthearted chat about how difficult navigating social situations can be, especially during adult life. Hope you enjoy it! | 22. Lily Allen's It's Not Me, It's You Part 1 w/ Aimée Borlase | 06 Aug 2023 | 00:38:05
In this episode I am joined by comedian, singer and actor Aimée Borlase! She brought with her to the show to discuss Lily Allen's album "It's Not Me, It's You." We discuss a little bit of The Muppet's at the start which was her alternative choice, but ended up going with Lily Allen. We discuss why this album was meaningful to Aimée, some of the themes contained in the lyrics and talk about how this album and Lily Allen in general has influenced Aimée's art thus far. Aimée is a self admitted over-preparer and had prepared a ton of notes, so we ended up being able to go for a lot longer than expected as thus this is part 1 of our discussion, give me a subscribe to keep in the know for when part 2 drops in a couple of weeks! In today's episode I am joined by Hoani Hotene, he's a Wellington based comic and was the 2023 winner of NZ's Raw comedy competition, quite an achievement and I was delighted to have him on the show. Hoani brought with him the Errol Morris documentary Gates of Heaven, made in the 70s about people who own and operate pet cemetaries. I watched the doco the night before and we had a really fun and interesting discussion of about it, as well as Hoani's wider love of documentaries. | 20. Murder w/ Aimée Thorne | 23 Jul 2023 | 00:36:49
Today I am joined by Aimée Thorne, and up and coming comedian from Auckland becoming known for her dark comedy. She's a part of the "Weird, Dark & Scandalous" crew, a comedy show for deviants, weirdos, outcasts, metalheads, geeks, and anybody who’s ever felt like they don’t quite fit in". Definitely get along to one of these shows if you see it being advertised! Aimée is a big fan of true crime and so I wanted to pick her brain a bit and see why people find true crime so fascinating, we also talk about a book called The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker and we talk about a few prominent NZ true crime cases. As you can expect this episode deals with some dark and potentially disturbing subject matter so please be aware of this when you listen, I won't hold it against you if you skip it! | 19. Baseball Basics w/ John The Robert | 16 Jul 2023 | 00:43:25
I've been wanting to talk about baseball at length with someone ever since I saw Moneyball. Great film. John being a native american was more than happy to chat with me about it and we cover the basics of the sport, as well as a few of the more advanced intricacies of the game. Towards the end we start getting into how baseball is deeply ingrained within american culture in a very interesting discussion. | 17. Origins of The Lamington w/ Danny Sewell & Fin McLachlan | 02 Jul 2023 | 00:32:51
I've been writing and designing for the best NZ based satire news page, The Lamington for about 3 months now and I thought it would be cool to have a chat with Danny & Fin the 2 lads behind the project. We went through the origins of the idea, how they followed through and got it off the ground, what's in store for the future of The Lamington and then we went through a couple of our sizzle reels, headlines we wished had got through but didn't for whatever reason. The interview was rife with technical issues, recording online and trying to sync up 3 conversations was a new podcasting challenge for me, and we ended up losing big chunks of the interview but what we did keep is still a great listen. I hope it makes up for the massively long episode last week. Follow The Lamington! | Merry Hossmas! | Hoss Town Podcast Ep. 6 | 10 Dec 2024 | 01:31:35
The final episode of Hoss Town for 2024! The boys started this project up when they were a bit less busy but as things have picked up with comedy, it's been harder to nail the Dons down at the same time to record. In this episode of Hoss Town, the Fellas contemplate losing a subscriber, Taylor being mistaken for Matt, and then Matt being mistaken for Ron Mac, Taylor was heckled by another fat guy and blew his top. They yap about climbing trees, and Matt has a theory about hosses that appear in fairy tales. Taylor had his first experience at a proper barber. The lads end on a sombre note as Taylor's family cat passed away recently and both of Matt's have been dealing with various health issues. See you in 2025 for more Hoss Town! Watch the full video on YouTube here. Follow Taylor Online: YouTube - Insta - Tiktok - Facebook Follow Matt Online: YouTube - Insta - Facebook Hoss Town is a monthly podcast by two big boys respectfully making some noise, stand up comedians Taylor Ruddle & Matt Lilley. The aforementioned Mayors of Hoss Town take a lighthearted look at masculinity in modern times - it's a journey of trying to find a balance between being Cavemen and Scholars with plenty of belly laughs along the way.
| 16. Revisiting A 15 Year Old Idea w/ Hamish Mabon-Ross | 25 Jun 2023 | 01:36:51 | |
In today's episode, I chat through an idea I had when I was around 15 or 16 years old. I started creating a flash animation of the story but possibly due to moving house or a PC dying I never got around to working on it any more. I always liked the idea for the setting, the magic system and the characters so it's never left my head all this time. I decided it would be great to bring Hamish, a fellow comic and fantasy fan onto the podcast where I could rattle off my story and ideas to him, and he could help me flesh it out as well as suggest some ideas of his own. We intended to only go for 40 minutes but we got so wrapped up in the discussion I decided to just let it roll and we've ended up with quite a long-y. If you're into worldbuilding, fantasy, comics, anime, storytelling and all that juicy stuff you'll probably really enjoy this episode, but if that's not for you then I won't begrudge you for skipping it. You might also just like to listen to me and Hamish chat for an hour, he has a very pleasing voice and I've been told the same about mine. Hope you enjoy! This time I decided to try out a "Two Dudes Talking" style podcast and went in without any ideas in mind, just wanted to have a chat to Steve who's a good friend of mine. Steve's a very funny comic, as well as a talented musician and artist. He loves cats too, so he's a true triple threat. We start out talking about the kings birthday holiday which was the day recorded it, and moved onto James Bond, what would a New Zealand James Bond movie be like, and then we moved into chatting about Steve more; how long has he been doing music and comedy, how did he get his start, and all those juicy details. It's a fun chat, and I hope you enjoy a change of pace for this one! In today's episode I rant and mostly rave for 45 minutes about this series of Japanese movies I love called Crows Zero. I show a few different versions of the international posters and talk about how hard it is for them to get the style right. I planned to go into more depth about the themes in the movies but once I started talking I mainly started raving about the things I love about the series and I'd love for you to check them out too. Welcome to The Phantom Files, a series within my podcast featuring paranormal stories from New Zealand; Cryptids, Ghosts, UFOs and everything else from beyond the veil. I'm a huge fan of the Monsters Among Us podcast and so have adopted the same format except focusing as much as possible on New Zealand. I highly recommend checking out Monsters Among Us, I have gotten so many hours of entertainment from that podcast. I sat down with one of my favourite comics and people in general, Big Jimmy Small. Jimmy imparts a lifetime of passion for football on me in just over an hour. I'd been wanting to have Jim explain to me the ins and outs of British football for the longest time, even more so now that I've gotten so into Ted Lasso. Had a great time chatting with Jim, the conversation mainly skewed towards the business and culture side of football, but he also told me a bunch of stuff about how the game is played. Definitely keen to get Jim back some time and have him explain more, I just enjoyed listening to him talk about football. | 10. Fast X w/ Steven Lyons | 16 May 2023 | 01:00:53
Steven Lyons is BACK and this time we discuss all of the posters and media that have come out surrounding the second to last movie in the Fast & Furious series, Fast X! We go off on all sorts of tangents, from comparing the movies to Rocket League, to talking about a far future spin off for John Cena called The Pacemaker, as well as discussing the absolute insanity seen within the movies and trailers released. It's a fun episode, don't take it too seriously and I hope you enjoy it. Check out Fast X in cinemas from the 18th of May in NZ! | 9. Perfuct Storm w/ Dan Bain | 14 May 2023 | 00:52:29
I sit down with Dan Bain, a writer, director, performer & maker of fun things based in NZ and finally get to pick his brain about his current Improv project Perfuct Storm. I'd been wanting to pull this apart with Dan for years so it was a very exciting conversation about where the seed for the idea started and how Dan's photography and graphic design skills have grown throughout this project. It's a fascinating conversation and Dan is very honest about where he came from and where he feels he hasn't lived up to his abilities in terms of one of the photoshoots. We also talk about where he got the idea for his innovative Instagram feed idea. I sit down with Dan Bain, a writer, director, performer & maker of fun things based in NZ. In this episode we talk about the album cover for the album Hail to The Thief by Radiohead and discuss the way this album and Radiohead in general have inspired Dan throughout his career as a creative. We get into Dan's workflow a bit and see how he manages his many projects as a sort of one band band production company. | 7. Gary Starlight & Infinite Jeff w/ Jeff Clark | 30 Apr 2023 | 01:04:38
In this episode we hear part 2 of my interview with Jeff Clark in which we talk about his alter ego Gary Starlight who he performs some incredible musical comedy as, the first time I saw him do it my mind was blown and I was really appreciative of being able to do a deep dive with Jeff and asking all of the questions I've had on my mind since I've known him. We get into the origins of the character and how his mind works when he is playing Gary, it's very fascinating to hear. We then move on to his experimental stand-up show Infinite Jeff a multiverse type show about where his life might have ended up if he didn't become an improviser. We head off on a couple of tangents about an experimental comedy set idea that Jeff has, as well as how amazing public libraries are and the litany of amazing services they provide. We wrap things up by breaking down the first ever comedy poster I designed, Jeff gives me some very kind but very insightful feedback. 0:00 Gary Starlight 19:01 Infinite Jeff 30:00 Jeff's Comedy Set Concept 32:20 Public Libraries are AWESOME 34:46 My First Comedy Poster 49:48 My Life Update You can follow Jeff online at: https://www.facebook.com/garystarlightsings https://www.facebook.com/JeffClarkPerformer https://www.instagram.com/comikazejeff/ https://www.twitter.com/comikazejeff/ Watch my full hour-long stand up special Ruddzilla for FREE on YouTube here! | 6. Raiders Of The Lost Clark w/ Jeff Clark | 23 Apr 2023 | 00:50:22
Episode 6 of the podcast is live and under the new umbrella title of Ruddle Me This! It's the same general formula, me talking with a guest that I find interesting, except we're not limiting ourselves entirely to poster based discussions, although I have found the format of asking the guests about posters meaningful to them to be a great conversation topic so we will invariably see more episodes about posters, I just wanted to change it up so that it's not the only thing I can talk about with my guests. In this episode Jeff Clark, Christchurch based musical improviser talks me through his 20 year career in improv, as well as his stints working as the marketing manager for a couple of theatre companies and an arts festival. We get into the nuts and bolts of marketing for a theatre, and then move into the poster Jeff brought with him, Raiders of the lost ark. We chat about Multiverse stuff a bit, and whether Star Wars has entered it's own Multiverse phase much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe has. Taylor even learns that Rhian Johnson directed one of the Star Wars movies he hasn't seen. As you can imagine when you get a couple of nerds in a room, many geeky tangents ensue! | 99. Post Mortem of the "What Do We Reckon?" Project | 03 Dec 2024 | 00:57:42
In 2024 I attempted a creative project known as What Do We Reckon? Which was inspired by things such as Game Changer, 7 Days, Have You Been Paying Attention, Mock The Week and so on. We thought we could possibly create a similar format but make it more internet-y and less high budget and we were hoping that if the jokes were good enough, the lack of production value wouldn't matter to much. We created 10 weeks of episodes, usually dropping 3 videos a week and after 10 we decided to put it on ice to focus on other things, or possibly retool it and bring it back in the hopes it might get a bit more attention. The videos unfortunately never really connected and so I thought it'd be fun to talk about why we think the project didn't really take off, and I brought Geoff Wilson and Steven Lyons onto the show to do that, as they were both contributors to the project. Bear in mind this episode is very "inside baseball" so may not be for everyone! Watch the full trial run we did of What Do We Reckon? This week I am joined by Emz or Emily of the Kowhai Fan Fest, happening here in Christchurch on the 18th of January 2025! Emz wears many hats for the fest, but her skills are predominantly in marketing, branding and comms. As we learnt over the course of this conversation she and I actually had a very similar career up until recently as she also studied Graphic Design and worked for many cool places, and lived in Japan for a bit. We talked a lot about what makes the Kowhai Fan Fest unique, what their ethos or kaupapa is and what people can expect from the 2025 fest. Emily's a really driven and lovely person, so I think you'll enjoy this one! In this episode I'm joined by Dave Adams, a comedian and family man based here in Christchurch and we delved into some threads from Reddit's r/AmITheAsshole which has become a favourite pasttime of mine to read. We picked a couple of interesting threads to talk about and Dave shared some great wisdom about both. We also discussed the NZ culture of FIsh n' Chips and there was a bit of pro wrestling talk, as you can imagine. Dave was also tickled pink to learn that I own multiple replica swords. | 96. What IS Meditation? with Dan Burgess-Milne | 17 Nov 2024 | 01:13:28
Today I sat down with Dan Burgess-Milne, a Christchurch based Meditation and Dharma teacher, game theory educator and rapper. Dan performed a presentation called Shifting Paradigms at Nerd Nite and was put in touch with me through the good folk at Nerd Nite. I was quite worried I wasn't going to be able to keep up with some of the concepts Dan talked about in his presentation but after sitting down with him for an hour I actually do really understand his presentation a lot better, I hope this podcast might help you too! The other massive revelation I had from this podcast was getting a better understanding of Meditation, and how the way most people practice it is actually only doing half of what meditation is supposed to be about. It was really eye opening, and I hope you enjoy it! Get in touch with Dan here, he's got some cool stuff in the works! | 95. Bilingual Comedy & International Travel with Elisa Bonnafous | 10 Nov 2024 | 00:43:13
Another great interview for you, this week I'm joined by comedian, surfer, photographer, civil engineer, wine maker and much more - Elisa Bonnafous! Elisa hails from France and is currently residing in Auckland where she's a cornerstone in the local stand up scene. We initially intended on talking about international travel but as the conversation got started it turned into more talking about the mutual experience we have of being an immigrant in a new country and how that affects your identity, as well as learning a new language and how that can change your personality somehow. We talk about Elisa's exploits in stand up, and what it's like performing in your second language as well as working on a solo hour. There's also plenty of talk about wine making and as you can imagine, the Roman Empire comes up towards the end! Hope you enjoy. | 94. Coffee Guilds, Professional Box-tickers & The Crystal Pineapple with Mark "Chirny" Chirnside | 06 Nov 2024 | 01:04:52
This episode is a rollercoaster from start to finish! I'm joined by coffee merchant, musician, sometimes comedian, potential future mayor of Christchurch, amateur box-ticker, businessman and Crystal Pineapple guild administrator - it's Mark "Chirny" Chirnside! I've been aware of Mark for several years and so it was great that he was able to stop by and have a chat on the podcast. We talked a lot about applying for arts funding, the fallacies and pitfalls of institutions and what steps he's taken to future-proof his own ones, there's HEAPS of coffee chat, we talked about the intricacies of the coffee community here in Christchurch, and then we end with Mark telling me about the Crystal Pineapple project, it's truly a fascinating wee tale that came out of nowhere and had me enthralled from start to finish. | 93. History, Music & Forteana with Simone Whitlow from Tales of History and Imagination | 03 Nov 2024 | 00:41:59
The first ever Ruddle Me This crossover episode! In this episode I'm doing a swapcast with Simone Whitlow from The Tales of History & Imagination Podcast! I'm trying to do a better job at connecting with other podcasters and this was a good first step. In this episode we chat about Simone's history performing in music, as well as how she got into history and then decided to create a whole podcast around it. We also spoke about Forteana which was something new I learnt about, somewhat hard to explain but you can read all about it on wikipedia, but described by Charles Fort as a "distinctive blend of mocking humor, penetrating insight, and calculated outrageousness" The blurb of Simone's show is: Ever heard the Tale of the man who tried to kill time as we know it? The mysterious beast which stalked a remote French village in the 1760s? What about the time a prankster ‘Zipped’ two Chicago television stations? Tales of History and Imagination tells the Tales from history less told. We discuss strange, enigmatic characters, the cameo roles in life’s play, and, sometimes, major events from a viewpoint rarely seen. If you'd like to check out Simone's show, visit https://historyandimagination.com/ and you can listen in there, or just search for Tales of History & Imagination on your favourite podcatcher! | Crime Shows We LOVE with Hamish Mabon-Ross (BONUS) | 27 Oct 2024 | 01:13:30
Sorry squad, we've missed our Hoss Town upload for the month, Matt came down with a ripper of a migraine on the filming day and that was unfortunately my last window before a super busy 2 week period including a gig on the road and the taping of my special, so Hoss Town shall return in 2025! Luckily I have 1 more podcast in my Break Glass in case of emergency folder, and this week I've got Hamish Mabon-Ross back on the podcast to discuss all the crime tv shows we enjoyed as well as talk about why seemingly straight laced innocent men such as ourselves love watching crime shows. We talk about Sons of Anarchy, The Wire, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos and a handful of others. Hope you enjoy it! | 92. Improv & Music in Japan with JinJin | 23 Oct 2024 | 00:45:44
It's another bonus episode! This week I'm joined by my dear friend JinJin from back in Japan. We reminisced about the time we performed an improv show at a hostel in the middle of nowhere to an audience of Chinese tourists with me only speaking English, the other 2 only speaking Japanese, and the tourists speaking neither, somehow it was actually a really fun show. We catch up on how JinJin has been and what kind of shows he is performing on as an improviser and musician in Japan, as well as how he got interested in Improv, as well as what's the difference between stand-up, rakugo, and manzai. It was a great little catch up and JinJin is just an amazing guy, so positive and enthusiastic, he always gives 110%. Shockingly fast, here's another Volume of The Phantom Files! This time featuring four chilling tales and I also share my findings after getting out into the field and doing some research at a pretty commonly accepted haunted location in my town - The Riccarton House! I spoke to a guide there who told me that they were sensitive to spirits and have had several encounters over the years. We also feature the tales: The Devil Went Out To Dinner, The Apartment Fire, The Full English, and The Lobby Time Slip. I hope you enjoy! | 90. Musician Life in Christchurch with Ruby Kush | 13 Oct 2024 | 00:59:10
This week I'm joined by local Christchurch Musician Ruby Kush! I booked a meeting room in the central Christchurch Library, Turanga and we recorded the episode there as something a bit different. We talked about her history as a musician, how she got started releasing tracks and what it's like trying to make a living as a musician in Christchurch. We also talked about her activisim and what angles she might take next year moving into politics at a local level. We bonded over a mutual childhood experience of watching Sailor Moon and Cardcaptors and then ended with some looser, more off the wall questions such as "What's your favourite struggle meal?" and "What's one food from history you'd like to go back in time and try?" It's a great episode and I reckon keep your eye on Ruby over the next year, she'll be popping off before long! Wowza what a guest I have for you this week! It's TV's Courtney Dawson! If you follow comedy then Courtney will be very familiar to you. I was lucky enough to catch Courtney while she was down for a few days and recorded this hilarious podcast. One of the funniest people in NZ on and off stage. We talked about things such as: how does a white person give a Pepeha? Her father's history of doing Mr Beast-like challenges and especially his latest one - Poppy's Comedy Club opened in his very own garage. Courtney tells us about a potentially paranormal experience she had, and about the time she foiled a vintage clothing store robbery, with a whole pile of laughs along the way. Hope you enjoy! | 88. All About India with Comedian Ben Vyas | 06 Oct 2024 | 01:09:19
Get your tickets to my Panic! At The Buffet comedy taping on the 26th of October 2024 HERE I recently watched the film Manjhi – The Mountain Man, about Dashrath Manjhi, a real life Indian man who carved a road through a mountain using only hand tools over the course of 22 years to make a road for his village to get to a nearby bigger village, reducing the travel time from 2 hours to around 40 minutes. I've always been fascinated with India in general, especially after growing up watching Russell Peters specials, and years ago I watched a special by Hamish And Andy of Australia where they explored India. I'm just curious about other countries in general so Ben Vyas, a local comedian on the scene was kind enough to join me on the pod and chat about India, Mountain Man, Ganesh, his Hindu faith in general and just any other questions I had in general about the country. We ended up getting really deep at the end and I realized in the middle of my conversation with Ben why this Mountain Man story has resonated with me so much. I hope you enjoy it! | 87. Darren Shan Nostalgia with Hamish Mabon-Ross | 29 Sep 2024 | 00:40:59
Get your tickets to my Panic! At The Buffet comedy taping on the 26th of October 2024 HERE In this episode, I brought back my regular compadre, Hamish Mabon-Ross to discuss the Young Adult horror vampire novel series that we both enjoyed in our youth - The Saga of Darren Shan! I had been feeling really nostalgic for this series as of late and when Hame mentioned that he was also familiar with it, I thought that's it! We need to do an episode of the pod talking about it. We mostly talk about his Cirque Du Freak / Vampire's Assistant / Tunnels of Blood books, but we also do talk about his later work, The Demonata and Zom-B towards the end. It's a bit of a mess in terms of continuity, we jump all over the place as random bits and pieces spark memories about other bits of the books, but I think you'll enjoy it all the same. I know Darren includes podcasts and videos about his work occasionally in his newsletter the Shanville Monthly so if you're reading this Darren, thanks for the incredible books, I enjoyed them immensely as a kid and I'm sure they must have a part in shaping my personality as I grew up. Keep up the great work! Cover art featuring my actual books. The books, in case you're interested in checking them out are: The Saga of Darren Shan (also known as the Cirque Du Freak series Vampire Blood Trilogy: Cirque Du Freak, The Vampire's Assistant, Tunnels of Blood. Vampire Rites Trilogy: Vampire Mountain, Trials of Death, The Vampire Prince. Vampire War Trilogy: Hunters of the Dusk, Allies of the Night, Killers of the Dawn. Vampire Destiny Trilogy: The Lake of Souls, Lord of the Shadows, Sons of Destiny. The Demonata: Lord Loss, Demon Thief, Slawter, Bec, Blood Beast, Demon Apocalypse, Death's Shadow, Wolf Island, Dark Calling, Hell's Heroes. And then there's the Zom-B series but I'm too lazy to grab all the individual titles, give it a read, it's cool stuff! The Thin Executioner is awesome too. -- Join the Ruddle Me This! subreddit to discuss the show, visit r/ruddlemethis! It's another edition of The Phantom Files, just over a year later than Volume III. As usual I've got some fantastic tales to share, in this episode Rebecca from Volume I makes a return telling us about an entity she created called The Hunter. I play an old radio recording called Bongo In The Pilliga from an Australian radio show called Overnights about the area of Australia called The Pilliga where ghosts and cryptids are rumoured to have been sighted. I retell a story of one of the only instances where Christchurch had a ghost - The Victoria Street Ghost. Tracey Royce of The Quantum Foundation returns to tell us about an entity she saw that we have no way of describing but the story sent chills down my spine to hear it! We close off with a short story about the mythical Cape Reigna here in New Zealand, thought to be the entrance to the underworld in Māori mythology. It's a great episode, hope you like it! This image shows how Tracey saw the entity that she did. If you'd like to preorder a copy of Tracey's book, flick her an email to traceyroyce1965@gmail.com and say hello, no payment needed until the book is published!
