As I've gotten older I've found myself disliking the constant bombardment of social media feeds and enjoying signing up to the newsletters of people who's work I enjoy. I genuinely look forward to them each month.

Also, with the recent potential ban of TikTok it's reminded me that while social media platforms rise and fall like empires, having a good mailing list is rock-solid (like investing in the housing market).

Each month I'll be including stuff like upcoming gigs, episodes of the podcast that were released as well as audio snippets, one-liners I'm working on, comedy special reviews, media I've seen that I'd like to recommend, video games I'm playing, basically whatever's bringing me joy at the time.

In Line By Line, I'm having a shakespearian actor or expert walk me through every line of the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare in an attempt to understand what's going on. The expert adds context and other tidbits to the dialogue and it's a super fun way to go through one of the longest lasting plays of all time.

I first met Steve last year when we performed on the Kids Day Out Variety Show together. I think I was the first person to do stand-up to children on that tour. Steve and I stayed in touch and have gigged together sporadically since. Today Steve offered to teach me all about Contact Juggling, a version of juggling that I had no idea was so rare of a skill, as well as relatively recent. We get into the history of contact juggling, as well as Steve's ambition to create an act that contributes to the art form. I've been writing and designing for the best NZ based satire news page, The Lamington for about 3 months now and I thought it would be cool to have a chat with Danny & Fin the 2 lads behind the project. We went through the origins of the idea, how they followed through and got it off the ground, what's in store for the future of The Lamington and then we went through a couple of our sizzle reels, headlines we wished had got through but didn't for whatever reason. The interview was rife with technical issues, recording online and trying to sync up 3 conversations was a new podcasting challenge for me, and we ended up losing big chunks of the interview but what we did keep is still a great listen. I hope it makes up for the massively long episode last week.

The final episode of Hoss Town for 2024! The boys started this project up when they were a bit less busy but as things have picked up with comedy, it's been harder to nail the Dons down at the same time to record. In this episode of Hoss Town, the Fellas contemplate losing a subscriber, Taylor being mistaken for Matt, and then Matt being mistaken for Ron Mac, Taylor was heckled by another fat guy and blew his top. They yap about climbing trees, and Matt has a theory about hosses that appear in fairy tales. Taylor had his first experience at a proper barber. The lads end on a sombre note as Taylor's family cat passed away recently and both of Matt's have been dealing with various health issues. See you in 2025 for more Hoss Town!

Hoss Town is a monthly podcast by two big boys respectfully making some noise, stand up comedians Taylor Ruddle & Matt Lilley. The aforementioned Mayors of Hoss Town take a lighthearted look at masculinity in modern times - it's a journey of trying to find a balance between being Cavemen and Scholars with plenty of belly laughs along the way. 

In today's episode, I chat through an idea I had when I was around 15 or 16 years old. I started creating a flash animation of the story but possibly due to moving house or a PC dying I never got around to working on it any more. I always liked the idea for the setting, the magic system and the characters so it's never left my head all this time. I decided it would be great to bring Hamish, a fellow comic and fantasy fan onto the podcast where I could rattle off my story and ideas to him, and he could help me flesh it out as well as suggest some ideas of his own. We intended to only go for 40 minutes but we got so wrapped up in the discussion I decided to just let it roll and we've ended up with quite a long-y. If you're into worldbuilding, fantasy, comics, anime, storytelling and all that juicy stuff you'll probably really enjoy this episode, but if that's not for you then I won't begrudge you for skipping it. You might also just like to listen to me and Hamish chat for an hour, he has a very pleasing voice and I've been told the same about mine. Hope you enjoy!

I also talk a bit about editing a proper special based on my experience making All My Covid Jokes towards the end. I sat down with one of my favourite comics and people in general, Big Jimmy Small. Jimmy imparts a lifetime of passion for football on me in just over an hour. I'd been wanting to have Jim explain to me the ins and outs of British football for the longest time, even more so now that I've gotten so into Ted Lasso. Had a great time chatting with Jim, the conversation mainly skewed towards the business and culture side of football, but he also told me a bunch of stuff about how the game is played. Definitely keen to get Jim back some time and have him explain more, I just enjoyed listening to him talk about football.

In this episode we hear part 2 of my interview with Jeff Clark in which we talk about his alter ego Gary Starlight who he performs some incredible musical comedy as, the first time I saw him do it my mind was blown and I was really appreciative of being able to do a deep dive with Jeff and asking all of the questions I've had on my mind since I've known him. We get into the origins of the character and how his mind works when he is playing Gary, it's very fascinating to hear. We then move on to his experimental stand-up show Infinite Jeff a multiverse type show about where his life might have ended up if he didn't become an improviser. We head off on a couple of tangents about an experimental comedy set idea that Jeff has, as well as how amazing public libraries are and the litany of amazing services they provide. We wrap things up by breaking down the first ever comedy poster I designed, Jeff gives me some very kind but very insightful feedback.

Episode 6 of the podcast is live and under the new umbrella title of Ruddle Me This! It's the same general formula, me talking with a guest that I find interesting, except we're not limiting ourselves entirely to poster based discussions, although I have found the format of asking the guests about posters meaningful to them to be a great conversation topic so we will invariably see more episodes about posters, I just wanted to change it up so that it's not the only thing I can talk about with my guests.

In this episode Jeff Clark, Christchurch based musical improviser talks me through his 20 year career in improv, as well as his stints working as the marketing manager for a couple of theatre companies and an arts festival. We get into the nuts and bolts of marketing for a theatre, and then move into the poster Jeff brought with him, Raiders of the lost ark. We chat about Multiverse stuff a bit, and whether Star Wars has entered it's own Multiverse phase much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe has. Taylor even learns that Rhian Johnson directed one of the Star Wars movies he hasn't seen. As you can imagine when you get a couple of nerds in a room, many geeky tangents ensue!

In 2024 I attempted a creative project known as What Do We Reckon? Which was inspired by things such as Game Changer, 7 Days, Have You Been Paying Attention, Mock The Week and so on. We thought we could possibly create a similar format but make it more internet-y and less high budget and we were hoping that if the jokes were good enough, the lack of production value wouldn't matter to much. We created 10 weeks of episodes, usually dropping 3 videos a week and after 10 we decided to put it on ice to focus on other things, or possibly retool it and bring it back in the hopes it might get a bit more attention. The videos unfortunately never really connected and so I thought it'd be fun to talk about why we think the project didn't really take off, and I brought Geoff Wilson and Steven Lyons onto the show to do that, as they were both contributors to the project. Bear in mind this episode is very "inside baseball" so may not be for everyone!

This week I am joined by Emz or Emily of the Kowhai Fan Fest, happening here in Christchurch on the 18th of January 2025! Emz wears many hats for the fest, but her skills are predominantly in marketing, branding and comms. As we learnt over the course of this conversation she and I actually had a very similar career up until recently as she also studied Graphic Design and worked for many cool places, and lived in Japan for a bit. Today I sat down with Dan Burgess-Milne, a Christchurch based Meditation and Dharma teacher, game theory educator and rapper. Dan performed a presentation called Shifting Paradigms at Nerd Nite and was put in touch with me through the good folk at Nerd Nite. I was quite worried I wasn't going to be able to keep up with some of the concepts Dan talked about in his presentation but after sitting down with him for an hour I actually do really understand his presentation a lot better, I hope this podcast might help you too! The other massive revelation I had from this podcast was getting a better understanding of Meditation, and how the way most people practice it is actually only doing half of what meditation is supposed to be about. It was really eye opening, and I hope you enjoy it!

I've teamed up with Logan Robinson of Robinson Wellness, he's a legit therapist (Registered Social Worker and Mental Health Coach), I tell jokes for money (sometimes) and we spent an hour discussing mental health issues submitted by my listeners.

• My work is currently starting the redundancy process which is really scary. The job market is terrifying at the moment and it's hard not to think that I'm going to lose my job and not get another one for months.
• Why is everyone so fucking stupid?
• Grief. My grandfather passed away at aged 90, after being in decline for honestly a few years. I’m struggling with guilt because I feel numb. I’m not crying, I’m not angry… nothing. Haven’t seen him in ten years, as he lives in England, but he is still my grandfather and I miss him even more now. What can I do to help grieve his passing in a healthy way?
• Anxiety and panic attacks
• Missing you
• Dealing with the constant whiplash of the government doing stupid things at every turn

Another great interview for you, this week I'm joined by comedian, surfer, photographer, civil engineer, wine maker and much more - Elisa Bonnafous! Elisa hails from France and is currently residing in Auckland where she's a cornerstone in the local stand up scene. We initially intended on talking about international travel but as the conversation got started it turned into more talking about the mutual experience we have of being an immigrant in a new country and how that affects your identity, as well as learning a new language and how that can change your personality somehow. We talk about Elisa's exploits in stand up, and what it's like performing in your second language as well as working on a solo hour. The first ever Ruddle Me This crossover episode! In this episode I'm doing a swapcast with Simone Whitlow from The Tales of History & Imagination Podcast! I'm trying to do a better job at connecting with other podcasters and this was a good first step. In this episode we chat about Simone's history performing in music, as well as how she got into history and then decided to create a whole podcast around it. It's another bonus episode! This week I'm joined by my dear friend JinJin from back in Japan. We reminisced about the time we performed an improv show at a hostel in the middle of nowhere to an audience of Chinese tourists with me only speaking English, the other 2 only speaking Japanese, and the tourists speaking neither, somehow it was actually a really fun show. We catch up on how JinJin has been and what kind of shows he is performing on as an improviser and musician in Japan, as well as how he got interested in Improv, as well as what's the difference between stand-up, rakugo, and manzai. We talked about her history as a musician, how she got started releasing tracks and what it's like trying to make a living as a musician in Christchurch. We also talked about her activisim and what angles she might take next year moving into politics at a local level. We bonded over a mutual childhood experience of watching Sailor Moon and Cardcaptors and then ended with some looser, more off the wall questions such as "What's your favourite struggle meal?" and "What's one food from history you'd like to go back in time and try?" It's a great episode and I reckon keep your eye on Ruby over the next year, she'll be popping off before long!

Wowza what a guest I have for you this week! It's TV's Courtney Dawson! If you follow comedy then Courtney will be very familiar to you. I recently watched the film Manjhi – The Mountain Man, about Dashrath Manjhi, a real life Indian man who carved a road through a mountain using only hand tools over the course of 22 years to make a road for his village to get to a nearby bigger village, reducing the travel time from 2 hours to around 40 minutes. I've always been fascinated with India in general, especially after growing up watching Russell Peters specials, and years ago I watched a special by Hamish And Andy of Australia where they explored India. I'm just curious about other countries in general so Ben Vyas, a local comedian on the scene was kind enough to join me on the pod and chat about India, Mountain Man, Ganesh, his Hindu faith in general and just any other questions I had in general about the country. We ended up getting really deep at the end and I realized in the middle of my conversation with Ben why this Mountain Man story has resonated with me so much. I hope you enjoy it!

In this episode, I brought back my regular compadre, Hamish Mabon-Ross to discuss the Young Adult horror vampire novel series that we both enjoyed in our youth - The Saga of Darren Shan! I had been feeling really nostalgic for this series as of late and when Hame mentioned that he was also familiar with it, I thought that's it! We need to do an episode of the pod talking about it. We mostly talk about his Cirque Du Freak / Vampire's Assistant / Tunnels of Blood books, but we also do talk about his later work, The Demonata and Zom-B towards the end. It's a bit of a mess in terms of continuity, we jump all over the place as random bits and pieces spark memories about other bits of the books, but I think you'll enjoy it all the same.

I know Darren includes podcasts and videos about his work occasionally in his newsletter the Shanville Monthly so if you're reading this Darren, thanks for the incredible books, I enjoyed them immensely as a kid and I'm sure they must have a part in shaping my personality as I grew up. Back from the grave! It's another edition of The Phantom Files, just over a year later than Volume III. As usual I've got some fantastic tales to share, in this episode Rebecca from Volume I makes a return telling us about an entity she created called The Hunter. I play an old radio recording called Bongo In The Pilliga from an Australian radio show called Overnights about the area of Australia called The Pilliga where ghosts and cryptids are rumoured to have been sighted. I retell a story of one of the only instances where Christchurch had a ghost - The Victoria Street Ghost. Tracey Royce of The Quantum Foundation returns to tell us about an entity she saw that we have no way of describing but the story sent chills down my spine to hear it! We close off with a short story about the mythical Cape Reigna here in New Zealand, thought to be the entrance to the underworld in Māori mythology. It's a great episode, hope you like it!

In this episode I'm joined by Wellington based stand-up comedian, Dan Boerman who just returned from a hell of a run at the Edinburgh Fringe and so wanted to spread some of the wisdom he acquired while over there doing everything solo and yet still having massive crowds with many sold out nights. Some of the things Dan suggested discussing were:

• How I marketed my show without PR/an agent
• Stuff that I wish I knew
• Benefits of Edinburgh / opportunities
• How to not lose lots of money*
• How to not have a mental breakdown*

*these apply to Edinburgh Fringe. Can’t help outside of this lol

We also chatted about how to find a venue as well as source some accommodation which I had heard were the two hardest things about doing the EdFringe. It was my first time speaking to Dan face to face and he was a lovely fella. I hope you enjoy it!
