As I've gotten older I've found myself disliking the constant bombardment of social media feeds and enjoying signing up to the newsletters of people who's work I enjoy. I genuinely look forward to them each month.

Also, with the recent potential ban of TikTok it's reminded me that while social media platforms rise and fall like empires, having a good mailing list is rock-solid (like investing in the housing market).

Each month I'll be including stuff like upcoming gigs, episodes of the podcast that were released as well as audio snippets, one-liners I'm working on, comedy special reviews, media I've seen that I'd like to recommend, video games I'm playing, basically whatever's bringing me joy at the time.

In Line By Line, I'm having a shakespearian actor or expert walk me through every line of the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare in an attempt to understand what's going on. The expert adds context and other tidbits to the dialogue and it's a super fun way to go through one of the longest lasting plays of all time.

Today I am joined by Steve Wilbury. Steve is an international award winning magician, stand up comedian and children's entertainer based up in Nelson. I first met Steve last year when we performed on the Kids Day Out Variety Show together. I think I was the first person to do stand-up to children on that tour. Steve and I stayed in touch and have gigged together sporadically since. Today Steve offered to teach me all about Contact Juggling, a version of juggling that I had no idea was so rare of a skill, as well as relatively recent. We get into the history of contact juggling, as well as Steve's ambition to create an act that contributes to the art form. We delve into all sorts of magic and comedy geekery throughout, so if you're into those, you're in for a treat!

In this episode I am joined by comedian, singer and actor Aimée Borlase! She brought with her to the show to discuss Lily Allen's album "It's Not Me, It's You." We discuss a little bit of The Muppet's at the start which was her alternative choice, but ended up going with Lily Allen. We discuss why this album was meaningful to Aimée, some of the themes contained in the lyrics and talk about how this album and Lily Allen in general has influenced Aimée's art thus far. Aimée is a self admitted over-preparer and had prepared a ton of notes, so we ended up being able to go for a lot longer than expected as thus this is part 1 of our discussion, give me a subscribe to keep in the know for when part 2 drops in a couple of weeks!

In today's episode I am joined by Hoani Hotene, he's a Wellington based comic and was the 2023 winner of NZ's Raw comedy competition, quite an achievement and I was delighted to have him on the show. Hoani brought with him the Errol Morris documentary Gates of Heaven, made in the 70s about people who own and operate pet cemetaries. I watched the doco the night before and we had a really fun and interesting discussion of about it, as well as Hoani's wider love of documentaries. Aimée is a big fan of true crime and so I wanted to pick her brain a bit and see why people find true crime so fascinating, we also talk about a book called The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker and we talk about a few prominent NZ true crime cases. As you can expect this episode deals with some dark and potentially disturbing subject matter so please be aware of this when you listen, I won't hold it against you if you skip it!
