| Exploring Bette Midler's Extraordinary Journey to Stardom with Kevin Winkler | 03 Jun 2024 | 01:06:00 | |
Bette Midler today is a beloved legacy star, best known for her comic witch in Disney's Hocus Pocus (1993) and its 2022 sequel. She has also gained prominence for sentimental, anthemic ballads like "Wind Beneath My Wings," her initiation of green space projects in New York City, and tussling with Donald Trump on Twitter. Her profile is that of an articulate, civic-minded matriarch enjoying thoroughly mainstream stardom. But more than fifty years earlier she emerged from the steam of the subterranean Continental Baths as the Divine Miss M, the bawdy, campy, fearless alter ego she created in front of an audience of towel-clad gay men who came to the baths seeking not just sex, but a sense of community and safety from an often-harrowing outside world. "I was able to take chances on that stage that I could not have taken anywhere else," she later wrote. "Ironically, I was freed from fear by people who, at the time, were ruled by fear. And for that I will always be grateful." Overnight, Bette Midler became a much-loved icon of the gay community.

As an A&R man, songwriter and song publisher JAY LANDERS works in many genres of music – with traditional vocalists, classical-crossover artists, pop, rock, urban and country singers, classical, comedy, children’s music, Broadway Cast albums and Motion Picture Soundtracks. Visit hwww.jaylanders.com. A note from Barbra: I had never even been in a nightclub until I sang in one. And that was a fluke since I had no intention of being a singer. I wanted to be an actress, but I couldn’t get a job. Then a friend told me about a talent contest at this little Greenwich Village club called the Lion, where the prize was $50, and dinner was free. I sang two songs and won, which led to being hired at a more sophisticated supper club around the corner called the Bon Soir, with an actual stage ... and a spotlight. It was 1960, I was 18 years old, and this was the first time I felt the warmth of that light. Everything else in the room went black and I couldn’t see any faces, which made it easier to concentrate on what I was doing as an actress…reaching deep into myself to identify with the characters in songs that came from the theater. All of a sudden, my name was in the newspapers, my two-week engagement kept being extended, and the buzz that began at the Bon Soir led to a contract with Columbia Records in 1962, the start of a long association that continues to this day. The initial plan for my first album was to record it at the club, and these early tapes have been sleeping in my vault for six decades. I’m delighted to finally bring them out into the light and share what could have been my debut album, Live At The Bon Soir. Thanks for listening., Barbra Streisand

In this book, readers will: ● Discover how uncomfortable experiences can serve as opportunities for self-exploration and personal growth while creating a foundation for a healthy perspective and an attitude of gratitude. ● Realize that in order to maintain hope, attract positivity, and fulfill one’s purpose, it is necessary to implement pause, practice personal reflection, and routinely acknowledge the needs of our soul, while taking inventory of those who occupy our time and space. ● Reveal a new (or greater) appreciation for their own journey as they recognize the value in painful lessons that serve to bring us closer to our purpose, and a life of peace and fulfillment. Beyond a great story, this book: ● Features reasons to believe in the underdog while showcasing how false perceptions, widely held beliefs, and initial impressions are not only misleading but often wrong. ● Provides a positive pathway to introduce, renew, and stretch that which we believe to be possible. ● Creates a mindset of possibilities within readers as they learn to recognize blessings in disguise, further open their minds, deepen their understanding, and reach their potential in areas of their life where they’ve become stagnant, complacent, or resentful. Shane Svorec is a lifelong writer and author who currently resides in New Jersey, along with her husband, three children, rescue dogs, and chickens. Best described as a traveling gypsy with the heart of a hippie and the faith of a missionary, Shane uses her hardships to connect, inspire and encourage others, refusing to allow her past or circumstances to define her.

From the author of Group, a New York Times bestseller and Reese’s Book Club Pick, comes a moving, heartwarming, and powerful memoir about Christie Tate’s lifelong struggle to sustain female friendship, and the friend who helps her find the human connection she seeks. After more than a decade of dead-end dates and dysfunctional relationships, Christie Tate has reclaimed her voice and settled down. Her days of agonizing in group therapy over guys who won’t commit are over, the grueling emotional work required to attach to another person tucked neatly into the past. Or so she thought. Weeks after giddily sharing stories of her new boyfriend at Saturday morning recovery meetings, Christie receives a gift from a friend. Meredith, twenty years older and always impeccably accessorized, gives Christie a box of holiday-themed scarves as well as a gentle suggestion: maybe now is the perfect time to examine why friendships give her trouble. “The work never ends, right?” she says with a wink. Christie isn’t so sure, but she soon realizes that the feeling of “apartness” that has plagued her since childhood isn’t magically going away now that she’s in a healthy romantic relationship. With Meredith by her side, she embarks on a brutally honest exploration of her friendships past and present, sorting through the ways that debilitating shame and jealousy have kept the lasting bonds she craves out of reach—and how she can overcome a history of letting go too soon. But when Meredith becomes ill and Christie’s baggage threatens to muddy their final days.

Debra Solomon has been creating award-winning animation since 1994, the year her first independent film, “Mrs. Matisse,” debuted in the New York Film Festival’s opening day program. It won the Young Lion Award at the Venice International Film Festival, appeared in over 25 festivals, and was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Film and Video Collection. “It’s a little masterpiece of gallows humor,” was Village Voice film critic Molly Haskell’s reaction to “Everybody’s Pregnant,” Solomon’s next animated film (1998). The film declares the fearlessness and compassion with which her works transform extreme personal experiences into shared, universal journeys. Funded in part by a Jerome Foundation grant, it went on to win many awards. Award-winning filmmaker and Emmy-nominated animator Sherene Strausberg combines her experience in film, music and sound engineering with graphic design and illustration to create animated videos for her clients at the company she founded, 87th Street Creative. Having won a national composition competition in high school, she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Indiana University School of Music, where she completed two bachelor’s degrees in four years. Film scores she wrote in her first career, as a film composer, have been heard on AMC, Spike TV and Netflix. As a graphic designer for Jewish National Fund, she won two awards from Graphic Design USA. Her latest passion project, the short, animated film “Cool For You”, which she animated and scored, has been accepted to 37 film festivals around the world.

The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say ‘no’ to almost everything.” – Warren Buffett
Jerry Torre fled an abusive father to tend to the neatly manicured lawns of socialite mansions in East Hampton, New York. He rode his bike a different way than usual one day and approached a house where the hedges in front were so overgrown that only two peaks of the gabled roof beyond it were visible. This house belonged to Mrs. Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale, aunt and first cousin, respectively, of Jacqueline Kennedy; descendants of a well-bred New York family, whose names were found in the Social Register and on invitations for coming out parties and debutante balls. Today, of course, Mrs. Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale are more commonly known as Big Edie and Little Edie. And they are known not for being in society, but rather for shunning all of society when high society wouldn’t accept their eccentricities. They chose instead to hole up in a neglected East Hampton mansion for more than twenty-five years, only opening to door to a few guests, one of whom was Torre. They were made famous, along with Jerry, and that rotting mansion called Grey Gardens, by the 1975 Albert and David Maysles documentary of the same name that became a cult sensation. So grab some Cheddar Cheese and join Zachary Ford and I as we celebrate The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens.

The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens is Jerry Torre's touching and at times haunting memoir about his teenage days as caretaker of Grey Gardens, the now-celebrated mansion chronicled in the iconic documentary Grey Gardens and two feature-length films. The book, co-written with film historian Tony Maietta, is a behind-the-scenes look at "Big Edie" and "Little Edie" and their bizarre and reclusive life of squalor amidst the tremendous wealth of East Hampton, the family bond that developed between Jerry and them, and the day everything was turned upside down forever with the arrival of documentary filmmakers Albert and David Maysles. What begins as a teenager coming upon what he assumed was an old, abandoned house takes on new dimensions when suddenly Edie appears on the porch draped in a shower curtain with an apron tied around her head. "You must be the Marble Faun," she tells the stunned Jerry. Rather than chasing him away as he at first feared, she invites Jerry to meet her mother upstairs. So begins a strange and unusually close friendship with the two women as Jerry takes on the task of volunteer gardener of their estate, often sleeping nights in their living room and staying out of the way of mother-daughter arguments. The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens is Jerry's look back on the filming of Grey Gardens but also how the notoriety the movie achieved changed his life along with the Beales as their private world is shared with audiences everywhere. Tony Maietta arrived in Los Angeles in the 1990s as a fresh faced twenty-something, eager to discover the “classic’ Hollywood that he fell in love with as a child. Alas, he was disappointed.

The bright, full moon in February is commonly called either the Snow Moon or the Hungry Moon. February is typically the snowiest month in northern North America, and, as a result, some Native Americans found it to be the most difficult month in which to hunt, prompting the name Hungry Moon. The Snow Moon will take place in the zodiac sign of Leo. Leos are generally known for their passion, creativity and, often, vanity. Full moons mark the completion of the lunar cycle and the Snow Moon is thought to be particularly pressing for four zodiac signs : Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. On February 3, kids can “buy” the usually forbidden privilege of chewing gum in class if they make a donation of 50 cents. While there might be some distractions in class — like smacking and bubble-blowing — kids learn about the value of charity and schools make a little money for the causes they support. Oh, and kids also get one day to break the classic “no-gum” rule. Dyan Forrest; D'yan Forest is a one of a kind performer who has performed cabaret and stand-up all over the world with notable performances in New York, Edinburgh, Paris and even Ethiopia. At 85 years old, she brings her unique perspective and vibrant personality to every performance she does whether it’s on stage or screen. Critics have called her everything from "saucy," "witty," "irrepressible," and a "naughty version of Betty White." At the age of 4, D'yan got into show business when she started playing recitals in her parents living room in Boston. Next, she picked up the ukulele, started singing and got into a dance band, which led to the trumpet, drums and naturally – the glockenspiel. While attending the Cite Universitaire de Paris, she began appearing in cafes, cabarets and nightclubs throughout the City of Lights. Paris appearances led to performing in other European countries. D'yan developed an international act with songs in nine languages. After returning to the states, she settled in New York City.

From his humble beginnings growing up on his grandfather's dairy farm in New York, JOEL THURM became one of the most admired, powerful, and accomplished casting directors in Hollywood, Early on, Thurm's instincts proved beyond reproach when he recognized John Travolta as much more than a teen idol, casting him in the TV movie THE BOY IN THE PLASTIC BUBBLE. It was during his years as Vice President of Talent and Casting for both Paramount Television and NBC that he discovered the remarkable Phoenix family, from which River and Joaquin became A-list movie stars. With his insider's knowledge, irreverent style, and biting wit, Thurm tells the stories of his key involvement in such iconic movies and shows as GREASE, AIRPLANE!, THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, CHEERS, TAXI, THE LOVE BOAT, FANTASY ISLAND, STARSKY & HUTCH, CHARLIE'S ANGELS, THE GOLDEN GIRLS, KNIGHT RIDER, THE COSBY SHOW, HILL STREET BLUES and many, many more. Susan's facile access to her brilliant thoughts, insights, and takeaways from an ever-evolving life, path, and career -- including collaborating with CSN and then consummate, music-making, Renaissance person/maestro Prince -- makes for an endlessly informative, enlightened, fascinating interview and conversation between two brilliant life forces who are graced with focused listening, dedicated attention, constructive perception, instant integration, sensibly flexible collaboration, and openly expansive analysis. The discussion about an artist's self-protecting barrier, shield, wall, and set of boundaries is quite resonant and taps my empathy, especially in light of my coping with an indefinite, forced retirement resulting from a 2018 incident of a longtime acquaintance, experiencing neurological deterioration, invading my space and assaulting me with overzealous affection in the form of an uninvited, excruciatingly painful deathsqueeze handshake that rendered me unable to work. So, yes indeed, there are necessary boundaries for the sake of self-preservation and for the fact that some people want to usurp one's possible access to contacts. Thank goodness for a career of nearly fifty years that's full of countless memories, an eclectic treasure trove of life's music soundtrack, memorable collaborative accomplishments, priceless friendships, precious extended familiness, invaluable learning, indispensable practical sustenance, the constant ultimate thrill of evolving, the blissfully vast microcosm of the universe in the realm of books, and the gift of life itself. This timeless episode certainly gladly reverberates and falls on deeply appreciative ears, heart, and soul. Gratefully, Alan C.

Everyone holds his fortune in his own hands, like a sculptor the raw material he will fashion into a figure. But it’s the same with that type of artistic activity as with all others: We are merely born with the capability to do it. The skill to mold the material into what we want must be learned and attentively cultivated. —Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Renowned choreographer Annie B. Parson explores the dance of everyday life and reveals that art-making is as natural as walking down the street In this sparkling, innovative, fully-illustrated work, world-renowned choreographer Parson translates the components of dance - time, proximity, space, motion and tone - into text. As we follow Parson through her days - at home, reading, and on her walks down the street - and in and out of conversations on everything from Homer’s Odyssey to feminist art to social protest, she helps us see how everyday movement creates the wider world. Dance, it turns out, is everything and everywhere. With the insight and verve of a soloist, Parson shows us how art-making is a part of our everyday lives and our political life as we move, together and apart, through space

Tony Roberts Sr: Between Me and God: Personal Conversations With God Between Me and God is about a young man's battle with himself, and his struggle with God. His one-on-one conversations take you inside the mind of a street hustler who questions God's existence. Raised in the inner city of Baltimore, Maryland Tony attended public schools where he first discovered his passion for role play. Tony worked as an Extra on The HBO show The Wire, and several other movie projects and fell in love with working in film; before making his decision to go back to college and graduated from Morgan State University, majoring in Theatre Arts. Tony is a man with a vision and a great purpose to make a difference in the lives of the youth. He offers a variety of services and has dedicated his life to Changing The Narrative of the youth in America. Thomas Quinn: "What Do You Do with a Chocolate Jesus?" is the funny and skeptical, yet genuine exploration of the Christian history they don't teach in Sunday school. It finds humor, irony, and occasional insight amid the inconsistencies, absurdities, hypocrisies, and flat out weirdness that too often passes for eternal truth. Like a history of religion as done by The Daily Show, it humorously explores the facts, the history, and the big ideas in an engaging and entertaining story. Pitting actual Scripture against pious propaganda, Thomas Quinn treks through chapter and verse of the New Testament, explores the sordid saga of medieval beliefs (including End-of-the-World panics and fights about what kind of stuff Jesus was made of), and reveals some of the shocking attitudes of America's founders toward religion. It isn't always pretty, but it's usually good for a laugh.

Joyce Bulifant: My Four Hollywood Husbands: Joyce Bulifant has lived the "Hollywood life" for nearly seven decades, and through it, experienced what few outside the entertainment world can imagine. While following the path of her own successful career, Ms. Bulifant managed to navigate the choppy waters of husbands' alcoholism, codependency and an extended family of four marriages. James MacArthur played Danno on Hawaii Five-0. Edward Mallory was Dr. Bill Horton on "Days of Our Lives." William Asher was the famous director-writer-producer of "I Love Lucy," "Bewitched" and the Beach Party movies. Roger Perry starred in "Star Trek" and over 300 TV shows and films. He has also composed music for Barbra Streisand and Bing Crosby. Along the way Bulifant managed to command the spotlight for her own accomplishments. As Gavin MacLeod's wife Marie on "The Mary Tyler More Show," a concerned mother in the movie "Airplane," dancing with Fred Astaire, and her reoccurring role on "The Match Game." My Four Hollywood Husbands is a rare peek into what happens off the screen. It's a story of love, a lasting love that is woven through the fabric of the world of entertainment. It's also a story about perseverance and overcoming obstacles--and that happy endings are indeed possible. Matthew Corozine: If You Survived 7th Grade, You Can be an Actor Applying The Meisner Technique To Get Outta Your Head in Acting and in LifeActing is living and behaving truthfully and fully under imaginary circumstances. But why is "truthfully" and "fully" so hard for us? Why is it so difficult to be in the moment with our art and in our lives?

This volume in the Routledge Key Guides series provides a round-up of the fifty musicals whose creations were seminal in altering the landscape of musical theater discourse in the English-speaking world. Each entry summarises a show, including a full synopsis, discussion of the creators' process, show's critical reception, and its impact on the landscape of musical theater. This is the ideal primer for students of musical theater – its performance, history, and place in the modern theatrical world – as well as fans and lovers of musicals. WE are joined by editor Robert W. Schneider. Robert W. Schneider (he/him/his) has been called a “renaissance man of the theatre” by his previous bio….which he wrote himself. He is an award-winning Director, Producer, Author, Educator, and Podcast Host residing in New York City, where he is the Artistic Director of The J2 Spotlight Musical Theater Company. While he has been praised by many publications and media outlets, Robert’s greatest achievement is that he is always able to get three dipping sauces automatically added to all Burger King orders. As Artistic Director of The J2 Spotlight Musical Theater Company, Robert directed their award-winning productions of Seesaw, A Class Act (1st NYC Revival), A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine (1st NYC Revival), and The Baker’s Wife, in which he collaborated with Stephen Schwartz on an intimate re-telling of the story.

Today, I celebrate three great books with the authors who wrote them! Digital Madness: From the author of the provocative and influential Glow Kids, Digital Madness explores how we’ve become mad for our devices as our devices are driving us mad, as revolutionary research reveals technology's damaging effect on mental illness and suicide rates―and offers a way out. Dr. Nicholas Kardaras is at the forefront of psychologists sounding the alarm about the impact of excessive technology on younger brains. In Glow Kids, he described what screen time does to children, calling it “digital heroin”. Now, in Digital Madness, Dr. Kardaras turns his attention to our teens and young adults and looks at the mental health impact of tech addiction and corrosive social media. In Digital Madness, Dr. Kardaras answers the question of why young people’s mental health is deteriorating as we become a more technologically advanced society. While enthralled with shiny devices and immersed in Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat, our young people are struggling with record rates of depression, loneliness, anxiety, overdoses and suicide. What’s driving this mental health epidemic? Our immersion in toxic social media has created polarizing extremes of emotion and addictive dependency, while also acting as a toxic "digital social contagion”, spreading a variety of psychiatric disorders. The algorithm-fueled polarity of social media also shapes the brain's architecture into inherently pathological and reactive "black and white" thinking―toxic for politics and society, but also symptomatic of several mental disorders.
