Exploring Bette Midler's Extraordinary Journey to Stardom with Kevin Winkler

lundi 3 juin 2024Durée 01:06:00

Bette Midler today is a beloved legacy star, best known for her comic witch in Disney's Hocus Pocus (1993) and its 2022 sequel. She has also gained prominence for sentimental, anthemic ballads like "Wind Beneath My Wings," her initiation of green space projects in New York City, and tussling with Donald Trump on Twitter. Her profile is that of an articulate, civic-minded matriarch enjoying thoroughly mainstream stardom. But more than fifty years earlier she emerged from the steam of the subterranean Continental Baths as the Divine Miss M, the bawdy, campy, fearless alter ego she created in front of an audience of towel-clad gay men who came to the baths seeking not just sex, but a sense of community and safety from an often-harrowing outside world. "I was able to take chances on that stage that I could not have taken anywhere else," she later wrote. "Ironically, I was freed from fear by people who, at the time, were ruled by fear. And for that I will always be grateful." Overnight, Bette Midler became a much-loved icon of the gay community.

dimanche 31 décembre 2023Durée 01:03:00

While cancer has silenced Russ Lorenson's voice, San Francisco's Favorite Crooner is on the path to recreating his musical magic, culminating in the eagerly anticipated release of his never-before- heard live album, 'Standard Time: Live in New York,' available now on the airwaves on December 1 (San Francisco, CA) October 30, 2023 - Russ Lorenson, acclaimed as "San Francisco’s Favorite Crooner," is set to enchant audiences worldwide with his latest album, "Standard Time: Live in New York." The record, a captivating live jazz-cabaret experience, is set to be released on December 1, 2023, under the independent label LML Music. A passionate champion of The Great American Songbook, Lorenson has been captivating audiences across the United States and Europe with his burnished tenor and warm charisma. He has previously released three critically-acclaimed albums, including two Christmas albums that garner heavy radio rotation nearly two decades after their release. His second holiday album, In The Holiday Spirit, was given 4 stars by Downbeat, and included in their “Best Albums of 2015.” In 2021, Lorenson faced a life-altering diagnosis of HPV-positive tonsil cancer. Through early detection, he overcame this significant health challenge and is now in remission. While cancer may have taken away his ability to sing, it hasn't silenced his voice. With profound gratitude and a sense of purpose, Lorenson is now channeling his creative energies into a flurry of activities, including the reintroduction of his back catalog, a children’s book inspired by his fan favorite holiday track, "Jingles, The Christmas Cat," and, notably, his first album in 8 years, "Standard Time: Live in New York." "Standard Time: Live in New York" offers a glimpse into Lorenson's captivating live performances in the iconic Metropolitan Room, New York, recorded in 2008.

Visit hwww.jaylanders.com. A note from Barbra: I had never even been in a nightclub until I sang in one. And that was a fluke since I had no intention of being a singer. I wanted to be an actress, but I couldn’t get a job. Then a friend told me about a talent contest at this little Greenwich Village club called the Lion, where the prize was $50, and dinner was free. I sang two songs and won, which led to being hired at a more sophisticated supper club around the corner called the Bon Soir, with an actual stage ... and a spotlight. It was 1960, I was 18 years old, and this was the first time I felt the warmth of that light. Everything else in the room went black and I couldn’t see any faces, which made it easier to concentrate on what I was doing as an actress…reaching deep into myself to identify with the characters in songs that came from the theater. All of a sudden, my name was in the newspapers, my two-week engagement kept being extended, and the buzz that began at the Bon Soir led to a contract with Columbia Records in 1962, the start of a long association that continues to this day. The initial plan for my first album was to record it at the club, and these early tapes have been sleeping in my vault for six decades. I’m delighted to finally bring them out into the light and share what could have been my debut album, Live At The Bon Soir. Thanks for listening., Barbra Streisand
