Okay, here’s a common scenario: Someone out of the blue contacts you or stops by your booth at an art fair. They’re curious about how much it might cost if they hired you to make something for them. They want to know what the cost of a commission is. So what do you say? While it might be tempting to give them a solid number up front, doing so might actually limit you in the long run. Or worse, it might cause them to ghost you if they’re making a quick decision off of limited information. In this two-episode series, we’re talking about what it takes to get quality information out of a prospect without overwhelming them. In the next episode (Episode 16), the second part of the series, we’ll discuss the appropriate level of detail and information you should share with prospective buyers upfront to make their decision-making process easier.

| 05. Get Organized in Your Business with this Sales Tracking Process for Creatives | 23 Sep 2024 | 00:23:05 | |
Welcome to Episode 5 and Happy Mon-yay to you! Today we’re taking a gentle stab at a topic people typically dread – bookkeeping, sales tracking, looking at your numbers, and doing a little spreadsheet administration. Somehow we’re nearing the end of September. So in the coming weeks, you might want to set aside some time to review the last month and quarter. In the first week of October, give yourself dedicated time to review sales that came into your art business during the quarter before across all of your sales platforms. We’re going to talk about doing this with curiosity rather than with judgment. This exercise can benefit you in so many ways. First and foremost, it gives you usable data for decision-making. This exercise can also help you to step out of the emotion of business ownership and the emotional blockers that might be keeping you from taking certain actions. We’ll look at what your numbers are telling you and what decisions you might want to make for the quarter ahead, Q4. Or even for Q3 of next year.

| 12. What's in Your 2025 Creative Online Business Budget? (Here's my 2025 Budgeting Wishlist!) | 11 Nov 2024 | 00:22:56 | |
Raise your hand if you have a clearly defined budget and a strategy for investing in yourself as a small business owner in the year ahead. I don’t see a lot of hands up. Let me rephrase... Raise your hand if you’re not quite sure what to budget for, business-wise, or where to make minor shifts and adjustments to invest in yourself and your creative business. Okay, more hands are up now. When it comes to business budgeting, most people keep on keeping on with what they’re doing without making time for this type of assessment. However, budget planning is for anyone and everyone. It doesn’t matter how much income or revenue is flowing through your business, large or small. Think of a budget as a wishlist. And what a perfect time of year for creating a wishlist. Start by thinking really BIG and expansive. Then get down to the nitty gritty numbers to figure out what’s essential and where to start. For example, your 2025 wishlist might include heavy duty equipment. Okay, great. What’s that going to cost? Is that something you can plan for? Or if your 2025 wishlist sounds anything like mine, there are mostly small budget items that are more about deciding to use different digital tools. This is a great time of year to put a business budget together. Here’s why:
I’ll walk you through what’s on my list and why. This is sure to inspire you, so take notes and get your 2025 business budget going!

Welcome to Episode 6! If you haven’t had a chance to listen to Episode 5 which is called, “Get Organized in Your Business with this Sales Tracking Process for Creatives,” that’s a great episode to listen to BEFORE you get into Episode 6. Episode 5 is highly tactical. I lay out how you can prepare for your end of month or end of quarter sales review and what you can do to get started with your quarterly and monthly sales numbers, what they mean to you now and what that means for Q4. Today’s Episode carries that observing and documenting review exercise one step further. Today you get to hear about a simple framework–an acronym–you can use as you look at things like monthly and quarterly sales reviews. You can also use this framework for decision-making in projects, planning head, planning for a pivot or change in your art business. This framework is not unique to my teaching. It was developed by strategist and U.S. Air Force Colonel John Boyd several decades ago as a practical concept designed to function as the foundation of rational thinking in confusing or chaotic situations. I’m getting into this topic in my interview with Chris Anderson, former law-enforcement officer turned jewelry maker, inventor, metalsmith, and founder of the metalsmith collective. Chris shares how he transferred skills learned in law enforcement to his business as a jewelry maker, then how he pivoted what he was making in order to turn followers into customers, and how he uses this decision-making framework, this acronym, to make decisions.

It’s always helpful to hear different perspectives, especially when it comes to money-related planning for the future. Hi! I’m Heather Allen, your personal professor of revenue readiness. I help artists and creative business owners to identify and optimize their revenue and income potential. And today I’m bringing a special guest into the classroom today to share a vision for what early retirement can look like. Pamela Reed is a certified life coach and financial strategist with a passion for helping others experience abundant wealth. Her journey toward financial freedom began early in her federal government career, where she discovered a deep desire to reclaim her time and live purposefully. Through strategic financial planning and intentional decisions, Pam achieved her goal of retiring early, building a life where work became optional. Now, she’s on a mission to empower others to skip the trial-and-error approach and create a clear, actionable financial plan that leads to true freedom. Pam believes that financial freedom isn’t just about numbers—it’s about aligning your finances with your values, unlocking your God-given potential, and living with confidence and purpose. In my interview with Pam, you’ll hear a few unconventional strategies for increasing passive income. Definitions related to financial freedom versus financial independence. Tips for rewriting your money story if it’s not serving you. And two budgeting options to help you get more in touch with your money on a monthly basis.

Coming up with your own pricing and what you’re going to charge for one-of-a-kind pieces, prints, and services shouldn’t be painful. In this episode, let’s look at a stackable formula you can use to account for the true cost of your work. This takes you out of emotionally driven pricing – which can feel arbitrary to both you and your customers. And it gives you more control over your pricing decisions so you can set them once and for all. ✅ Referenced Episodes:
