The Moment After: How to Reconnect After a Difficult Conversation04 Sep 202600:18:02

You talked it through. You didn’t blow up. You actually reached a resolution.

So why does it still feel weird between you?

This week, we had a difficult conversation after our kids left for school. And honestly, we handled it pretty well. We stayed regulated, avoided falling into the Courtroom Trap, listened to each other, and figured out what needed to change.

But then we went about our morning—and something still felt off.

The conflict was over, but our bodies hadn’t quite gotten the message yet.

We call this The Moment After: that vulnerable space after a difficult conversation when everything may technically be okay, but you haven’t fully softened back toward each other.

And if you’re not careful, this is exactly where another small moment can reignite the conflict you just worked so hard to resolve.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Why resolution and reconnection are not the same thing
  • What happens in your nervous system after a difficult conversation
  • Why silence can feel like anger and space can feel like rejection
  • How couples accidentally reignite conflicts after they’ve already resolved them
  • Why different partners need different signals that everything is okay
  • How touch, words, eye contact, space, humor, prayer, or another small ritual can create a bridge back to connection
  • How to discover what helps you and your partner soften toward each other again

One of the most powerful things you can say in The Moment After may simply be:

“I’m still a little activated, but you and I are okay.”

Because ending the disagreement is only part of the work.

Repair gets you out of the conflict. The Moment After determines how you find each other again.

❤️ Your Love Work

During a neutral moment this week, talk about what happens for each of you after a difficult conversation.

Ask each other:

What happens inside me after conflict?

What helps me know that you and I are okay again?

What could you do that would help me soften and reconnect with you?

You don't need the same thing. One of you may need reassurance while the other needs touch, eye contact, or a little space.

The goal is to understand each other's process and intentionally create your own bridge back to connection.

Same Fight, Better Outcome: How Healthy Relationships Actually Change28 Aug 202600:18:36

“Why are we STILL dealing with this?”

If you've ever had the same argument with your partner for what feels like the hundredth time, you may have wondered whether all the work you're doing is actually making a difference.

We had one of those moments this week.

EJ forgot to pay a credit card bill on time. The mistake cost us $15—which doesn't sound like much. But underneath that $15 were years of history around money, trust, responsibility, defensiveness, and emotional safety.

Tarah could feel herself slipping into an old story: If I don't take care of everything, things won't get done.

EJ could feel himself heading toward defensiveness: I handle so much, and now I'm going to be judged for one mistake.

We've had versions of this fight many times before.

But this time, something different happened.

Within minutes, we were okay.

In this episode, we unpack what each of us did differently and why we believe one of the biggest mistakes couples make is measuring progress by whether an old problem ever comes back.

We explore:

  • Why recurring triggers don't automatically mean your relationship isn't improving
  • How old stories can turn small moments into much bigger conflicts
  • The difference between accountability and shame
  • How to take responsibility without becoming defensive
  • Why emotional safety is built through repeated experiences
  • How familiar conflicts can become opportunities to practice something new
  • Why getting 10% better may be more powerful than trying to solve the problem forever

We also introduce an idea we're developing inside Relationship Renovation:

Relationships Change Through Reps

Healthy relationships aren't necessarily relationships where familiar problems disappear.

They're relationships where two people gradually learn to respond differently when those familiar moments return.

Same Trigger → Different Response → Different Outcome

So instead of asking:

“Why are we still having this problem?”

Try asking:

“Are we getting better at how we handle it?”

❤️ Your Love Work

Choose one recurring pain point in your relationship.

Not while you're fighting about it, but during a calm moment, talk together about:

How can each of us get 10% better the next time this happens?

Because progress doesn't mean you'll never get triggered again.

Progress is when those triggers begin to lose their power over what happens next.

When Initiating Sex Starts Feeling Like Pressure21 Aug 202600:27:46

What happens when reaching for your partner no longer feels safe?

There was a period in our marriage when EJ stopped initiating sex completely.

It wasn't punishment. It wasn't giving up. We made the decision together because our sexual relationship had become complicated. EJ was experiencing rejection. Tarah was experiencing pressure. And something that had once felt spontaneous and playful had become loaded with anxiety, expectation, resentment, and meaning.

Stepping back helped.

But years later, as our intimate relationship became healthier, something unexpected happened:

Tarah wanted EJ to want her again.

And EJ realized he wasn't quite sure how to reach for her anymore.

In this deeply personal episode, we walk through four different seasons of our sexual relationship—from the ease of early intimacy, through the difficult high-desire/low-desire years, into adaptation, and now into what we're calling a season of rediscovery.

We explore:

  • Why sexual initiation can begin to feel like pressure instead of connection
  • What repeated rejection can do to the person who keeps reaching
  • What repeated expectation can do to the person experiencing lower desire
  • Why temporarily changing who initiates helped our relationship
  • How emotional safety allowed desire to begin feeling free again
  • The stories couples unknowingly attach to sex
  • How we're learning to initiate again after years of complicated sexual history
  • Why mature intimacy isn't about recreating the honeymoon stage

And we introduce a distinction we're beginning to use in our own relationship:

Invitation vs. Expectation

Can I express desire for you without making you responsible for satisfying it?

And can you receive my desire without becoming responsible for satisfying it?

That's where we're discovering a different kind of intimacy—one where desire can be expressed honestly, either partner is free to respond honestly, and a “not right now” doesn't have to mean rejection.

If initiation has become tense, awkward, infrequent, or almost nonexistent in your relationship, this conversation is for you.

And if you don't know how to begin talking about it, join our 🎧 Patreon (Free + Premium). We're sharing our Sexual Intimacy Inventory, designed to help couples start conversations about desire, initiation, tension, and what they want their intimate relationship to become.

Maybe the goal isn't to get back to what sex used to be. Maybe it's to discover what intimacy can become now.

You Don’t Need a Date Night to Feel Connected14 Aug 202600:14:27

What if staying connected didn’t require another thing on your calendar?

For busy couples, “date night” can start to feel like one more responsibility—find a babysitter, make a reservation, figure out what to do, and somehow find the energy to actually enjoy yourselves.

We know that feeling.

In this lighter, fun episode, we’re sharing some of the simple ways we’ve learned to stay connected at home—from question decks and themed dinners to game nights, morning coffee, walks with the dogs, cooking together, and even folding laundry.

Because some of the most meaningful moments in a relationship aren't grand gestures at all. They're the ordinary moments when we intentionally turn toward each other.

We talk about:

  • Easy at-home date ideas that don't require a lot of planning or money
  • Why novelty can bring playfulness back into your relationship
  • How just 10 intentional minutes together can matter
  • Simple conversation starters that help you reconnect
  • Why shared rituals—morning coffee, a favorite show, cooking together—can become meaningful points of connection
  • How to prioritize your relationship without making connection feel like another task

We also share one of our favorite questions for couples:

If we met today, what would first catch your attention about me now?

And when you're finished listening, we have some Love Work for you:

Don't wait for the perfect date night. Find one small moment this week and make it yours.

Because healthy relationships aren't built only on vacations, romantic dinners, or grand gestures.

They're built through thousands of small moments when we choose to turn toward one another.

The Resentment Wall: Why We Keep Pushing Each Other Away07 Aug 202600:29:07

What if resentment isn't the problem... but a form of protection?

Most couples think resentment appears overnight. In reality, it forms one small hurt at a time—like adding another brick to a wall. At first, that wall feels like it protects us from being hurt again. Over time, it becomes the very thing that separates us from the person we love.

In this deeply personal episode, EJ and Tarah begin by sharing current resentments they still carry toward one another. Instead of avoiding the conversation, they model what it looks like to approach resentment with curiosity, compassion, and emotional honesty.

Together they explore:

  • Why resentment often feels useful in the moment
  • How repeated hurts slowly build emotional walls
  • The connection between resentment, attachment, and emotional safety
  • Why understanding what resentment is protecting can create breakthrough moments
  • How compassion replaces judgment when you understand your partner's story
  • A simple Love Work exercise to begin removing one "brick" from your relationship this week

One of the most powerful questions from this episode is:

"What is my resentment protecting me from?"

Sometimes resentment is protecting us from feeling hurt.

Sometimes it's protecting us from feeling vulnerable.

And sometimes it's protecting us from believing things can ever be different.

Healing doesn't happen by pretending resentment isn't there. It begins by gently understanding why it showed up in the first place—and having the courage to remove one brick at a time.

The Courtroom Trap: Why Healthy Conversations Shouldn't Feel Like a Trial31 Jul 202600:19:44

Have you ever tried explaining yourself, only to hear your partner say, "You're being defensive"?

It happens in almost every relationship. One partner feels misunderstood. The other feels unheard. Before long, the conversation isn't about understanding anymore—it's about proving who's right and who's wrong.

In this episode, we introduce a new Relationship Renovation concept: The Courtroom Trap.

The Courtroom Trap is what happens when partners stop approaching each other with curiosity and begin acting like opposing attorneys—building a case, defending themselves, and searching for evidence instead of understanding.

Together, we explore:

  • The difference between explaining yourself and becoming defensive
  • Why defensiveness often begins long before anyone says a word
  • How assumptions quietly put your partner "on trial"
  • The role of emotional safety in difficult conversations
  • A simple phrase that can stop conflict before it escalates: "I think we're in the courtroom."
  • How curiosity transforms conflict into connection

Because healthy relationships aren't built by winning arguments.

They're built by understanding each other.

In This Episode

  • What The Courtroom Trap is
  • Explaining vs. Defending
  • Why assumptions create emotional distance
  • Practicing curiosity instead of prosecution
  • Building emotional safety through honesty and transparency

Why Small Arguments Become Big Fights: The Trigger Transfer Trap24 Jul 202600:21:22

Have you ever found yourself in a heated argument with your partner and thought, "How did we get here so fast?"

In this episode, EJ and Tarah unpack a real-life moment from their own marriage that started with a simple question about putting collars on the dogs—and escalated into frustration within seconds.

What they discovered wasn't about dog collars at all.

It was something they now call Trigger Transfer—the moment when one partner's long-standing trigger quietly becomes the other partner's trigger. Over time, couples stop reacting to what's actually happening in the present and begin reacting to the history they've built together.

If you've ever felt like the smallest moments somehow turn into the biggest fights, this episode will help you understand why—and more importantly, how to interrupt the cycle before it takes over.

In this episode you'll learn:
  • Why seemingly insignificant moments trigger outsized reactions
  • What Trigger Transfer is and how it develops over time
  • How anticipatory anxiety keeps couples stuck in old patterns
  • The difference between responding to your partner and responding to your nervous system's predictions
  • A practical way to move from reaction to curiosity during conflict
Reflection Question

Am I responding to my partner... or to the story my nervous system has already started telling me?

That single question has the power to transform the way you experience conflict.

Are You Loving Your Partner... Or Trying To Change Them?17 Jul 202600:27:33

When your partner is struggling, what do you do?

Do you try to comfort them?

Fix them?

Pull them out of it?

Or... are you actually trying to change their emotional state because their discomfort is making you uncomfortable?

In this deeply personal episode, EJ and Tarah unpack two real moments from their own marriage where they found themselves caught in the same hidden pattern—feeling responsible for changing each other's mood.

What began as a conversation about emotional heaviness became a much bigger question:

What does love actually look like when your partner is struggling?

Together they explore:

  • Why your partner's emotional state can start to feel like your emotional problem.
  • The hidden difference between caretaking and companionship.
  • Why trying to "help" can unintentionally create emotional unsafety.
  • How childhood experiences shape our response to a partner's difficult emotions.
  • What genuine emotional support looks like when someone you love is hurting.
  • Practical ways to stay connected without taking responsibility for changing your partner.

Whether you're the one who shuts down or the one who desperately wants to make everything okay, this conversation offers a new way to think about emotional safety, love, and responsibility.

Reflection Question

The next time your partner is struggling, ask yourself:

Am I trying to love them... or am I trying to change them so I can feel more comfortable?

That single question has the power to transform the way you show up in your relationship.

Why Everything Feels Like Your Responsibility (The Hidden Belief That Was Quietly Running My Life)10 Jul 202600:28:15

Have you ever felt like you're carrying everything?

Your family's emotions.

Your marriage.

Your business.

Your finances.

Your future.

For years, EJ believed it was his job to hold everything together. The result wasn't more peace—it was more pressure, striving, and a growing inability to receive love, joy, and even rest.

In this deeply personal conversation, Tarah interviews EJ about the inner work he's been doing over the past several months. What begins as a conversation about journaling, gardening, and daily practices becomes something much deeper: uncovering the old beliefs that quietly shaped his identity for decades.

Together they explore:

  • Why everything started feeling like an assignment.
  • The hidden belief that everything was his responsibility.
  • The difference between trying to fix yourself and learning to understand yourself.
  • Why receiving love can feel harder than giving it.
  • How old stories continue to shape marriages, parenting, finances, and self-worth.
  • The surprising role that gardening, journaling, and slowing down have played in discovering a new way of living.
  • Why real personal growth isn't about becoming someone new—it's about uncovering who you've always been beneath fear, striving, and shame.

Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, constantly striving, or simply wondering why joy feels so difficult to access, this episode offers an honest conversation about what it means to grow with compassion instead of pressure.

Why We Miss Each Other When We Need Each Other Most (And How to Repair)03 Jul 202600:26:02

Two nights ago, we completely missed each other.

It started with something ridiculously small—a late-night plate of food for our kids—but underneath it were exhaustion, old wounds, nervous systems in survival mode, and two people who desperately needed each other but couldn't find their way there.

In this episode, we're pulling back the curtain on one of our own conflicts and walking you through exactly what happened, what we each experienced internally, and how we repaired afterward.

You'll hear how:

  • Small moments activate much deeper emotional stories.
  • Nervous systems can pull couples in opposite directions.
  • One partner often needs connection while the other instinctively withdraws.
  • Repair becomes possible once you understand what's happening beneath the surface.
  • Conflict can become an opportunity for deeper intimacy instead of greater distance.

If you've ever wondered why the smallest disagreements become your biggest fights, this episode is for you.

Because sometimes the moment your partner pushes you away is actually the moment they need you the most.

In This Episode

✔ Why conflict is rarely about the thing you're arguing about

✔ How childhood experiences quietly shape adult reactions

✔ The difference between reacting to your partner and understanding them

✔ Why emotional safety begins with understanding your nervous system

✔ How we repaired after completely missing each other

Memorable Quote"The moment your partner pushes you away may actually be the moment they need you the most."

Why Small Arguments Turn Into Huge Fights (Emotional Safety Part 2)26 Jun 202600:22:53

Why do small disagreements sometimes turn into huge arguments?

In Part 2 of our Emotional Safety series, licensed therapists and married couple Tarah and E.J. Kerwin explore why conflict can feel so overwhelming—and what emotionally safe couples do differently.

Using a real disagreement they experienced just before recording this episode, they break down the practical skills that help couples move from defensiveness and blame to understanding and repair.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • Why your nervous systems—not just your words—can escalate conflict
  • How to stop trying to "win" an argument and start understanding each other
  • Why emotional regulation is the first step to productive communication
  • How validation creates emotional safety, even when you disagree
  • Practical ways to repair after conflict instead of staying stuck in resentment

Conflict doesn't have to push you apart. With the right tools, it can become an opportunity to build trust, strengthen connection, and create a safer, healthier relationship.

If you haven't already, be sure to listen to Part 1: Why You Feel Lonely In Your Relationship (Emotional Safety Part 1) for the foundation of emotional safety and why it matters.

Why You Feel Lonely In Your Relationship (Emotional Safety Part 1)19 Jun 202600:17:19

Have you ever felt lonely in your relationship, even when your partner is sitting right beside you?

Maybe you've stopped bringing up certain topics because it doesn't feel worth the argument. Maybe difficult conversations keep getting delayed. Or maybe you've started filtering parts of yourself to avoid conflict, disappointment, or rejection.

Many couples believe they have a communication problem when what they actually have is an emotional safety problem.

In Part 1 of this two-part series, Tarah and EJ explore seven common signs that emotional safety may be missing in your relationship. These signs are often subtle and can slowly create distance, loneliness, defensiveness, and disconnection over time.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • What emotional safety really means in a relationship
  • Why couples stop telling each other the whole truth
  • How avoiding difficult conversations creates emotional distance
  • The role defensiveness plays in relationship disconnection
  • Why loneliness can exist even inside a committed relationship
  • How fear of vulnerability blocks intimacy
  • Why filtering yourself around your partner is a warning sign
  • What it means when conflict feels dangerous instead of productive

Tarah and EJ also share a real-life example from their own marriage that happened moments before recording this episode and how emotional safety helped them navigate frustration, disappointment, and conflict without becoming disconnected.

If you've ever felt like you're walking on eggshells, holding back your truth, or struggling to feel understood by your partner, this episode will help you identify where emotional safety may be breaking down.

What If You're The Only One Trying To Save The Relationship? (Interview with Dr. Lee Baucom)17 Jun 202600:36:48

Have you ever felt like you're the only one worried about your relationship?

Maybe you've suggested counseling, asked for deeper conversations, or tried to reconnect—but your partner doesn't seem interested. It can feel lonely, frustrating, and even hopeless.

In this episode, we're joined by marriage expert Dr. Lee Baucom, creator of the Save the Marriage System, to discuss one of the most common questions couples face:

What do you do when you want to save the relationship, but your partner doesn't?

Dr. Baucom shares why many couples unintentionally "hit pause" on their relationship while focusing on careers, parenting, finances, and life's endless responsibilities—and why that pause can slowly create distance and disconnection over time.

Together, we explore:

  • Why relationships don't stay still—they either grow or drift apart
  • The hidden dangers of the "pause button marriage"
  • The difference between fault and responsibility
  • Why one partner often recognizes relationship problems before the other
  • The "Chaser, Spacer, and Pacer" dynamic and how it impacts connection
  • Why forcing connection often pushes a partner further away
  • How to become more invitational instead of reactive
  • The role of self-management during relationship stress
  • Common misunderstandings around stonewalling, gaslighting, and emotional distance
  • How to know when it's time to keep trying—and when it's time to let go

We also share personal stories from our own marriage, including how overwhelm, resentment, and parenting stress challenged our relationship and what helped us find our way back to each other.

Whether you're feeling disconnected, discouraged, or simply wondering if your relationship can recover, this conversation offers practical guidance, hope, and a reminder that meaningful change often starts with one person choosing a different path.

About Dr. Lee Baucom

Dr. Lee Baucom is the creator of the Save the Marriage System and a nationally recognized expert in relationship resilience and marital recovery. For more than 30 years, he has helped couples around the world rebuild trust, reconnect, and strengthen their relationships.

When Sex Stops Feeling Safe (Intimacy Pressure Part 2)12 Jun 202600:30:35

Last week, we explored how intimacy can slowly become pressurized in a relationship and leave both partners feeling lonely, misunderstood, and disconnected.

In Part 2, we're talking about how to take that pressure out of the system.

Whether you're the partner feeling rejected and longing for connection, or the partner feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or emotionally withdrawn, this episode offers practical tools to help you rebuild intimacy without blame, pressure, or scorekeeping.

We discuss why intimacy often breaks down when couples stop talking honestly about what's happening beneath the surface, and how emotional safety—not pressure—is the foundation for lasting connection.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • Why intimacy should never feel like a performance review
  • How scorekeeping damages emotional and physical connection
  • The difference between agreements and obligations
  • How to talk about intimacy without blame or defensiveness
  • Why both partners are often suffering in different ways
  • How emotional safety helps rebuild desire and trust
  • Practical conversations that create connection instead of pressure
  • Why expanding your definition of intimacy can transform your relationship

We also share personal stories from our own marriage, including what we've learned through seasons of mismatched desire, perimenopause, hormone changes, and the ongoing work of maintaining connection through life's transitions.

If intimacy has become a source of tension, frustration, or loneliness in your relationship, this episode will help you begin creating a healthier path forward.

Because healthy relationships aren't built by avoiding difficult conversations—they're built by learning how to have them.

Why Couples Feel Rejected, Overwhelmed, and Disconnected (Intimacy Pressure Pt 1)05 Jun 202600:30:22

Why does intimacy start feeling so difficult in long-term relationships?

For many couples, intimacy doesn't disappear overnight. Instead, pressure slowly enters the relationship. One partner begins feeling rejected, lonely, or unwanted, while the other feels overwhelmed, anxious, and like they're never enough.

In Part 1 of this two-part series, EJ and Tarah Kerwin share their own story of how intimacy pressure developed in their marriage after the birth of their twins and how it created years of misunderstanding, resentment, and emotional disconnection.

Caretaking in Relationships: How Couples Rebuild Trust & Emotional Safety | Part 229 May 202600:20:07

In Part 2 of our series on caretaking in relationships, we move beyond identifying the problem and begin helping couples understand how to actually heal the disconnection it creates.

Caretaking often looks loving on the surface — avoiding conflict, protecting your partner’s feelings, holding things in to “keep the peace.” But underneath, it quietly erodes emotional safety, trust, intimacy, and connection.

In this episode, EJ and Tarah walk couples through:

  • How to recognize when something is being emotionally withheld
  • Why many partners can sense when something feels “off”
  • The difference between caretaking and true emotional safety
  • How avoiding difficult conversations creates loneliness inside relationships
  • The importance of emotional transparency and nervous system regulation
  • How to create healthy agreements around checking in with each other
  • Why emotional safety is built through honesty, not perfection
  • How couples learn to face discomfort together instead of protecting themselves from each other

Tarah and EJ also vulnerably share how this dynamic showed up in their own marriage around intimacy, co-parenting, anxiety, and emotional communication — and how learning to stay connected through difficult moments transformed their relationship.

If you’ve ever felt:

  • like something was unsaid in your relationship
  • emotionally alone while still being together
  • anxious, disconnected, or stuck in conflict avoidance
  • afraid to bring up difficult topics
  • exhausted by walking on eggshells

…this episode is for you.

Because the goal in healthy relationships isn’t avoiding discomfort.

It’s learning how to stay connected through it together.

Perimenopause and menopause don’t just affect women individually — they impact entire relationships.

In Part 2 of our powerful conversation with Dr. Arianna Sholes-Douglas, founder of Tula Wellness and host of the Stay Juicy Podcast, we move beyond symptoms and dive deeply into how hormonal shifts affect intimacy, emotional connection, desire, anxiety, resentment, and long-term relationships.

Tarah vulnerably shares her personal journey through nearly a decade of low libido, anxiety around intimacy, insomnia, and feeling disconnected from herself — before finally discovering how hormone replacement therapy, emotional safety, and deeper self-understanding changed everything.

Together, we explore:

  • How declining estrogen impacts dopamine, libido, and emotional well-being
  • Why so many women feel broken, ashamed, or misunderstood during perimenopause
  • The emotional toll intimacy struggles take on couples
  • How men often personalize changes in desire
  • Why emotional safety and communication become essential during this transition
  • The hidden connection between stress, nervous system regulation, and intimacy
  • The role of testosterone, estrogen, sleep, and lifestyle changes
  • Why many women are misdiagnosed or dismissed
  • How couples can navigate this season together instead of turning against each other

This episode is deeply honest, emotional, validating, and hopeful for couples navigating one of the most misunderstood transitions in relationships.

Why Taking Care Of Everyone Else Is Hurting Your Marriage (Caretaking Part 1)22 May 202600:20:28

Have you ever felt like something was “off” in your relationship… even though nobody was technically doing anything wrong?

In this episode of the Relationship Renovation Podcast, E.J. and Tarah unpack one of the most common — and misunderstood — dynamics they see in couples therapy: caretaking.

Caretaking isn’t just being helpful or supportive. Often, it’s the unconscious habit of withholding feelings, needs, honesty, or vulnerability in an attempt to manage your partner’s emotions — while actually protecting yourself from discomfort, conflict, or rejection.

In this conversation, E.J. and Tarah explore:

  • Why couples start “walking on eggshells”
  • How withholding creates resentment and emotional disconnection
  • The hidden message underneath caretaking
  • Why avoiding conflict actually weakens trust
  • How nervous system dysregulation fuels these patterns
  • The impact caretaking has on intimacy and sex
  • Real-life examples from their own marriage and clinical work

If you’ve ever thought:

  • “I didn’t want to stress them out”
  • “I didn’t want to make things worse”
  • “I just kept it to myself”
  • …this episode is for you.

This is Part 1 of a two-part series on breaking free from caretaking dynamics and building emotional honesty, safety, and connection in your relationship.

In this deeply honest and validating conversation, we sit down with Dr. Arianna Sholes-Douglas — founder of Tula Wellness, author of The Menopause Myth, and host of the Stay Juicy Podcast — to unpack what perimenopause and menopause REALLY feel like beyond the social media jokes and hot flash stereotypes.

We talk about:

  • brain fog and memory fears
  • irritability and emotional overwhelm
  • sleep disruption and anxiety

In Part 1 of this series, we explored why relationships often feel strained during seasons of change — even when the transition itself is positive.

In this episode, we move into the solutions.

We break down 5 practical tools couples can use to stay emotionally connected during stressful or uncertain seasons, including:

  • how to identify transitions before they create disconnection
  • why naming the transition out loud matters
  • understanding your individual coping patterns

We also discuss the 3 biggest mistakes couples make during transitions — including going into autopilot, personalizing stress responses, and failing to recognize that a transition is even happening in the first place.

Whether you’re navigating:

  • parenting changes
  • career shifts
  • moving
  • grief
  • relationship milestones
  • identity changes
  • or everyday stress transitions

…this episode will help you move from “me vs. you” into “we.”

Because the goal isn’t avoiding change.

It’s learning how to stay connected through it.

Why Your Relationship Feels Off During Life Transitions (Part 1)08 May 202600:22:42

Have you ever noticed that your relationship starts to feel off…

Right when life is changing?

👉 You move

👉 Have a baby

👉 Start a new job

👉 Even go on vacation

And suddenly:

  • You’re arguing more
  • You feel disconnected
  • Or something just feels… different

Here’s the confusing part:

👉 Nothing is actually “wrong”

In this episode, we break down why transitions—both big and small—can quietly create distance between couples, even when everything seems positive on the surface.

You’ll learn:

  • Why change disrupts your relationship more than you expect
  • How loss of routine and predictability impacts connection
  • Why you and your partner cope differently (and what that creates)
  • The hidden patterns that lead to conflict, distance, and disconnection

Most importantly…

👉 You’ll start to understand that this isn’t a relationship failure

👉 It’s a very predictable dynamic

This is Part 1 of a two-part series where we help you understand what’s happening beneath the surface—so you can actually start to navigate it differently.

How to Repair After a Fight (5 Ways to Actually Fix Conflict)01 May 202600:24:58

Have you ever argued with your partner…

and even though it “ended”…

something still didn’t feel right?

You told each other you were fine.

You moved on with your day.

But underneath it all—

👉 there’s still tension

👉 still distance

👉 still something unresolved

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

In this episode, we break down what’s really happening in those moments:

👉 Ruptures—the emotional disconnection that happens when conflict isn’t fully repaired

And more importantly…

👉 how to actually fix them

We walk you through 5 powerful ways to repair after conflict, including:

  • Why unresolved arguments don’t just disappear—they carry into the next one
  • How to take real responsibility (without blaming your partner)
  • The importance of regulating your emotions before trying to fix anything
  • Why validation doesn’t mean agreement—and why that changes everything
  • What a genuine apology actually sounds like (and why most don’t work)
  • How to intentionally reconnect so the relationship feels safe again

One of the biggest takeaways:

👉 Just because the fight ended… doesn’t mean it was repaired

And without repair, those moments build over time—

creating resentment, distance, and disconnection.

Why Your Relationship Feels Like Roommates (And How to Fix It)24 Apr 202600:27:28

Do you love your partner… but feel more like roommates?

Most of your conversations are about:

  • schedules
  • responsibilities
  • getting through the day

And somewhere along the way…

the connection, intimacy, and fun start to fade.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

In this episode, we break down what many couples experience—but don’t always talk about:

👉 The “roommate phase” of long-term relationships

We cover:

  • Why even strong relationships drift into routine and disconnection
  • How busy lives, stress, and responsibilities slowly replace connection
  • The hidden costs most couples don’t see coming (resentment, emotional distance, loss of intimacy)
  • Why this phase can feel like “we’ve lost our spark”—even when love is still there
  • The simple, practical ways to begin reconnecting again

One of the most important truths:

👉 Disconnection doesn’t happen all at once… it grows quietly over time

But the good news?

You can catch it early—and shift it.

In this episode, we share:

  • how to recognize when you’re in the roommate phase
  • how to talk about it without blame
  • why small moments matter more than big gestures
  • and how to rebuild emotional connection in simple, consistent ways

Why do you keep having the same conversation… with no real change?

You talk things through. You feel aligned. And then a week later, you’re right back in the same pattern.

In Part 2 of this series, we break down why that happens — and how to finally create agreements that actually stick.

Because most couples don’t have a communication problem.

They have an agreement problem.

In this episode, we move from awareness (Part 1) into action — giving you a clear, step-by-step process to turn unspoken expectations into explicit, workable agreements that build trust, safety, and real change in your relationship.

We introduce a simple but powerful framework to help you:

• Identify where you keep getting stuck as a couple

• Uncover the hidden expectations you’ve never clearly expressed

• Communicate needs without blame or defensiveness

• Create agreements that are realistic, mutual, and measurable

• Move from confusion and frustration → clarity and teamwork

We also share real examples from our own relationship — including how unspoken expectations around finances created disconnection, and how shifting to explicit agreements changed everything.

One of the biggest takeaways:

👉 If you can’t measure it, it’s not an agreement.

This episode will help you move from:

“I thought we talked about this…”

to

“We both know exactly what we agreed to.”

Does this sound familiar?

Your partner doesn’t do something you expected…

and suddenly you’re frustrated, confused, or hurt.

Meanwhile, your partner is sitting there thinking:

“What just happened?”

In this episode, we break down one of the most common—and invisible—relationship dynamics

👉 Implicit Agreements

These are the unspoken rules, expectations, and assumptions you carry into your relationship… that your partner never actually agreed to.

And yet, they’re being held accountable to them.

We explore how these hidden expectations:

  • create recurring conflict
  • lead to resentment and disconnection
  • and keep couples stuck in the same arguments over and over again

We also walk you through:

• The difference between implicit vs. explicit agreements

• The “damage cycle” that keeps couples stuck

• How your family of origin and past experiences shape your expectations

• Why your partner is often set up to fail without even knowing it

• A practical exercise to help you identify your own hidden expectations

Betrayal, Infidelity & Trust: Dr. Stan Tatkin on Why Relationships Fail (and How to Repair Them)27 Mar 202600:52:55

Book a Discovery Call for Relationship Renovation Coaching

What actually causes betrayal in relationships?

Is it about sex, disconnection, or something deeper?

In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Stan Tatkin, founder of the PACT Institute and one of the leading voices in relationship science, to break down what really happens when trust is broken—and what it actually takes to repair it.

Dr. Tatkin challenges many common beliefs about infidelity and introduces a powerful reframe:

Betrayal isn’t just about what happened.

It’s about what was hidden.

When critical information is withheld, it can completely destabilize a relationship—creating symptoms that often mirror trauma, including anxiety, obsession, and loss of safety.

We explore why betrayal impacts the brain so deeply, why many couples struggle to recover, and what separates relationships that survive from those that don’t.

In this episode, we discuss:

• Why betrayal is a trauma response, not just a relationship issue

• The real definition of infidelity (beyond cheating)

• How withholding information destroys trust and agency

• Why “why did this happen?” is often the wrong question

• The role of accountability, transparency, and repair

• The three phases couples move through after betrayal

• Why most relationships fail after infidelity—and what it actually takes to rebuild

Dr. Tatkin also introduces one of the most important ideas for long-term relationship success:

Relationships don’t fail because of love.

They fail because they were never designed for safety.

This episode is essential listening for anyone navigating betrayal, rebuilding trust, or wanting to understand how to create a relationship that can withstand real-life challenges.

Key Takeaway:

You don’t repair trust through words—you repair it through consistent, observable change over time.

From the outside, it can look like you have the “perfect” partner.

They manage everything.

They take care of the house, the schedule, the responsibilities.

But on the inside… it can feel very different.

You may feel:

  • crowded out
  • judged
  • like there’s no room for you to contribute
  • or like nothing you do is ever “right”

In this episode, we explore what it’s like to be the partner of an overfunctioner — and why this dynamic often leads to withdrawal, resentment, and disconnection on both sides.

This is Part 2 of our Overfunctioning series.

(If you haven’t listened to Part 1, we recommend starting there.)

In this episode we discuss:

• Why overfunctioning can unintentionally push a partner away

• How feeling inadequate leads to withdrawal and underfunctioning

• The cycle of control and avoidance that keeps couples stuck

• Why this dynamic creates a power imbalance in relationships

• How resentment builds on both sides of the relationship

• The key shift: seeing overfunctioning as anxiety, not control

• How couples can begin to move toward collaboration and shared responsibility

We also share personal experiences from our own relationship and the patterns we see with couples in our work.

In this episode, we explore the dynamic of overfunctioning in relationships — when one partner takes on too much responsibility in an attempt to manage anxiety, prevent chaos, or keep everything under control.

While overfunctioning can look like competence, responsibility, or generosity on the outside, it often leads to burnout, resentment, and disconnection over time.

In this episode we discuss:

• What overfunctioning actually is

• Why anxiety often drives this pattern

• How early life experiences can shape the need to manage everything

• Why overfunctioning unintentionally erodes shared responsibility in relationships

• The resentment cycle that develops between partners

• The first shift that helps overfunctioners begin to step out of the pattern

We also share personal experiences from our own relationship and the insights we've gained working with couples who struggle with this dynamic.

If you've ever felt like “If I don't do it, no one will,” this episode will help you understand why that pattern develops — and how it can begin to change.

In this episode, we continue our series on what happens when communication tools stop working and address one of the most confusing concepts in relationships:

Does validation mean agreeing with something that isn’t true?

The answer is no — and understanding the difference can completely change the way couples navigate conflict.

We explore why validation regulates the nervous system, lowers defensiveness, and helps couples move out of repeating argument loops. When partners feel heard emotionally, they become more open to understanding each other instead of defending their version of events.

You’ll learn how to validate your partner’s emotional experience without confessing to something you don’t believe happened.

In this episode we discuss:

• The critical difference between validation and agreement

• Why defending the facts often escalates conflict

• How emotional validation helps regulate your partner’s nervous system

• Why couples get stuck in “prove it” arguments

• The repeatable validation script that can interrupt conflict patterns

• How validation prevents years of repeating the same fights

We also walk through real-life examples that couples commonly experience, including moments where one partner feels accused and the other feels unheard.

Key takeaway:

You don’t build trust by winning the argument or confessing to something you didn’t do.

You build trust by showing your partner that their emotional experience matters.

This is Part 2 of our series on when communication tools break down in conflict.

If you missed Part 1, be sure to go back and listen to:

When you're in the middle of conflict, communication tools can completely fall apart.

You try to validate.

You try to listen.

You try to stay calm.

And suddenly you're flooded, defensive, or completely shut down.

In this episode, we respond to a powerful listener question:

What do you do when the tools don’t work?

We break down:

  • Why regulation must come before communication
  • How nervous system activation creates “narrative certainty”
  • The 3 biggest mistakes couples make when they’re dysregulated
  • Why debating facts in the moment makes everything worse
  • How to pause conflict without escalating it
  • The critical difference between insecurity-based distortion and true gaslighting
  • The exact steps to re-enter the conversation safely

If you’ve ever felt like communication skills fail you in high-conflict moments, this episode will change how you approach repair.

Key Takeaway:

Why Sex Changes in Midlife and How Couples Close the Bedroom Gap13 Feb 202600:35:57

Why does sex often become uncomfortable, pressured, or disconnected in midlife — even in loving relationships?

Book a Discovery Call for Relationship Renovation Coaching

In this episode, EJ and Tarah are joined by Dr. Maria Sophocles, board-certified gynecologist and national menopause expert, to explore what she calls The Bedroom Gap — the growing difference in expectations, desire, and physical experience that many couples face as they age.

They discuss why so many women feel broken or ashamed when intimacy changes, why couples rarely talk openly about it, and how hormonal shifts, cultural messaging, and outdated definitions of sex create disconnection.

Dr. Sophocles shares three essential steps to closing the gap:

• Know thyself — understanding your body, hormones, and pleasure

• Communicate — removing shame and learning to talk honestly about sex

• Redefine sex — shifting from performance and obligation to connection and pleasure

You will also hear about:

• How perimenopause and menopause impact desire and comfort

• Why pain during sex often leads to avoidance and fear

• How shame silently fuels disconnection

• Why redefining sex beyond penetration changes everything

• The difference between obligation-based sex and connection-based intimacy

• How couples can rebuild trust after long periods of distance

This episode is especially helpful if:

• Intimacy feels tense, painful, or avoided

• One partner feels rejected while the other feels pressured

• Hormonal changes have shifted desire

• You miss feeling close but do not know how to start again

• Shame makes it hard to talk about sex

This is an honest, hopeful conversation about sexual health, emotional safety, and rediscovering pleasure in long-term relationships.

If you’ve ever wondered why connection doesn’t automatically follow commitment, or why closeness can suddenly feel anxiety-producing instead of natural, this conversation offers a deeper explanation.

Together, they unpack how expectation, anxiety, and unspoken pressure quietly erode connection, and why many couples try to fix intimacy by focusing on the act itself rather than the emotional and nervous-system conditions that make closeness possible.

Dan shares insights from his own marriage and his work helping couples move beyond obligation and routine, including why:

  • Desire cannot be forced or scheduled into existence
  • Closeness often shuts down when there is pressure or expectation
  • Many couples confuse validation with true connection
  • Anxiety around vulnerability can lead partners to disconnect without realizing it
  • Emotional safety must come before deeper physical closeness

They also discuss practical ways couples can rebuild connection gradually, including slowing down, creating moments of presence, and learning to tolerate closeness instead of rushing past it.

This episode is especially helpful if:

  • Intimacy feels tense or disconnected
  • One partner feels pressured while the other feels rejected
  • You miss feeling close but don’t know how to get back there
  • You want to rebuild connection without blame or shame

This is a grounded, honest conversation about intimacy in real relationships — not quick fixes, but what actually helps couples feel close again over time.

Why Triggers and Defensiveness Derail Communication (Part 3)06 Feb 202600:28:36

Why do the same arguments keep happening — even when you know better?

Book a Discovery Call for Relationship Renovation Coaching

In Part 3 of our communication series, relationship therapists Tarah and EJ Kerwin break down what’s really happening underneath conflict: emotional triggers, nervous system hijacking, and defensiveness. These are the moments when logic disappears, your partner feels like the enemy, and small issues turn into big ruptures.

In this episode, we explain why triggers are not character flaws — they’re internal emotional alarms — and how understanding your triggers can help you slow reactivity, reduce damage, and repair more quickly. You’ll learn how to recognize when you’re out of your window of tolerance, how your body signals activation, and how old wounds and core beliefs get activated in present-day relationships.

We also walk through one of the core tools we use with couples: a step-by-step process to understand triggers, identify automatic thoughts and feelings, and reconnect in a more open-hearted, regulated way.

This episode isn’t about never being triggered.

It’s about learning repairable communication — so conflict becomes a pathway to deeper understanding instead of disconnection.

In This Episode, We Cover:
  • What emotional triggers actually are (and what they are not)
  • Why defensiveness escalates conflict so quickly
  • How triggers hijack the nervous system
  • Signs you’re outside your window of tolerance
  • The connection between triggers, unmet needs, and core beliefs
  • How to slow down reactivity in the moment
  • A practical framework for understanding and repairing after conflict
  • Why healthy relationships aren’t trigger-free — they’re repair-focused

Communication Skills Every Couple Needs: Validation, Active Listening, and Repair (Part 2)30 Jan 202600:28:29

In Part Two of our Communication Series, EJ and Tarah Kerwin break down three of the most essential — and most misunderstood — relationship skills: validation, active listening, and repair attempts.

Book a Discovery Call for Relationship Renovation Coaching

Most couples don’t struggle because they don’t care — they struggle because they were never taught how to communicate when emotions are high. In this episode, EJ and Tarah explain why defensiveness is so common, how quickly conversations turn into arguments, and what it actually means to help your partner feel heard without giving up your own boundaries.

Through real-life examples from their own relationship and years of clinical work, they explore:

  • Why validation does NOT mean agreement
  • How active listening builds emotional safety (and why it’s so hard)
  • Common signs you’re listening defensively instead of openly
  • Why couples who avoid conflict often struggle more than couples who fight
  • How repair attempts can shorten conflict and prevent resentment
  • What to do when you miss the moment — because you will

This episode is practical, honest, and deeply human. If you’ve ever felt unheard, misunderstood, or stuck in the same argument over and over again, this conversation will give you tools you can start using today.

🔑 Key Topics Covered
  • Validation vs. defensiveness
  • Active listening as a relational skill
  • Repairing conflict instead of avoiding it
  • Emotional safety and presence
  • Communication patterns that quietly damage connection

The Biggest Communication Mistakes Couples Make (Part 1: The Don’ts)23 Jan 202600:29:44

Is communication the biggest struggle in your relationship? You’re not alone.

Book a Discovery Call for Relationship Renovation Coaching

In Part 1 of our 3-part Communication Series, relationship experts and hosts Tarah and EJ Kerwin break down why communication goes wrong so often—even when we love our partner and have the best intentions.

This episode focuses on the “DON’Ts” of communication: the instinctive, automatic responses we fall into when we’re tired, defensive, triggered, or overwhelmed. These reactions may feel honest in the moment, but they often shut down connection and emotional safety.

Through real-life examples, personal stories, and practical reframes, Tarah and EJ show how the same situations can feel completely different when handled with validation, active listening, and emotional awareness.

In this episode, you’ll learn:
  • Why emotional invalidation damages trust (even when you’re trying to help)
  • How saying “I never said that” escalates conflict instead of resolving it
  • Why accusations and blame shut down vulnerability
  • The hidden danger of mind reading and unspoken expectations
  • Why fights about chores are almost never about the chores
  • How just one partner responding differently can completely change the outcome of a conflict

This episode lays the foundation for healthier communication—not perfection. If you’ve ever thought, “We keep having the same fight over and over,” this series is for you.

  • Part 2: Validation & Active Listening (the skills that change everything)

Why do couples swear they’ll “do better next time” — and then fall into the exact same fights again?

In this episode, we’re joined by Thais Gibson, leading attachment theory expert and founder of The Personal Development School, to unpack why relationship change often doesn’t stick — and what actually works at the subconscious and nervous system level.

Thais shares practical tools for rewiring attachment patterns so couples and individuals can move toward secure attachment, emotional safety, and real connection.

If you’ve ever felt stuck, triggered, or discouraged because insight alone hasn’t changed your relationship, this conversation will give you hope and concrete next steps.

  • How anxious, avoidant, and fearful-avoidant attachment styles experience conflict differently
  • The role of the nervous system in emotional shutdown, defensiveness, and reactivity

In the final episode of our four-part Intimacy Gap series, we focus on how couples can move forward — not by “getting back” what they once had, but by intentionally creating a new intimacy story together.

Many couples feel stuck when intimacy changes. Desire feels mismatched. Emotional connection fades. Sex becomes pressured or avoided. In this episode, we explore why intimacy isn’t something you find again — it’s something you build over time through emotional safety, curiosity, and shared experiences.

We talk about how play and novelty reduce defensiveness, why new experiences create powerful bonding moments in the brain, and how small, realistic shifts (not grand gestures) can dramatically improve emotional, physical, and sexual connection. We also break down the different types of intimacy — emotional, physical, sexual, spiritual, and intellectual — and help couples clarify what they want their intimate relationship to feel like now.

This episode offers a practical framework for:

  • Letting go of old intimacy stories that no longer fit
  • Creating a shared vision for connection that honors both partners
  • Building habits that foster desire without pressure or obligation
  • Addressing real-life blocks like stress, parenting, mental health, and time constraints
  • Shifting intimacy from a task into an experience of connection and pleasure

We also emphasize that intimacy is a living practice, not a one-time conversation. Couples who revisit these conversations regularly — with curiosity instead of defensiveness — build more secure, resilient relationships over time.

In This Episode, We Cover:
  • Why play and novelty are essential for long-term intimacy
  • How to create a new intimacy story instead of chasing the past
  • The role of emotional safety in rebuilding desire
  • How stress, avoidance, and pressure quietly sabotage connection
  • Practical ways to bring intimacy into everyday life (not just the bedroom)
  • A simple reflection exercise to identify how you feel desired
Action Step for Listeners

Take a few minutes to reflect — alone or with your partner:

  • How do I feel desired emotionally?
  • How do I feel desired physically?
  • How do I feel desired sexually?

These answers can become the foundation of your new intimacy story.

In Part 3 of our Intimacy Gap series, we explore two of the most powerful and most misunderstood ingredients of lasting intimacy: curiosity and emotional safety.

So many couples get stuck in the same painful loop: mismatched desire, uncomfortable conversations, and the fear that they’ll never get back on the same page. But true intimacy doesn’t start with sex, it starts with the emotional safety to be vulnerable, honest, and seen.

In this episode, we dive deep into how curiosity becomes a bridge across the intimacy gap… and how emotional safety transforms the hardest conversations into opportunities for closeness.

In this episode, we cover:
  • Why emotional safety is the #1 predictor of long-term relationship satisfaction
  • How curiosity helps couples reconnect when intimacy feels out of reach
  • What it looks like to approach hard conversations with “soft eyes”
  • How hormone changes, stress, and life transitions impact desire — and how to talk about it
  • Self-regulation vs. co-regulation: what each partner needs to bring into sensitive conversations
  • How couples can avoid falling into repetitive patterns that shut down intimacy
  • A real, personal story from EJ & Tarah about navigating desire discrepancies with vulnerability
  • Why repair matters more than getting it perfect
  • Practical scripts for bringing up intimacy concerns without triggering defensiveness
Key Takeaways:
  • Curiosity is the antidote to fear. It keeps your heart open when patterns feel stuck.
  • Emotional safety comes before desire. Without it, intimacy cannot thrive.
  • Your partner is not the enemy. You’re two people navigating a shared emotional landscape.
  • Soft eyes, gentle tone, and asking “Is now a good time?” can instantly shift a conversation.
  • Self-regulation is essential. You can’t co-regulate as a couple if you’re dysregulated individually.
  • Intimacy evolves. You’re not trying to get back to what it was — you’re building what’s next.

Ever wondered why stress and shame seem to quietly erode intimacy in your relationship?

Do you and your partner struggle to reconnect during overwhelming seasons—leaving both of you feeling misunderstood, rejected, or alone?

Curious how to calm your nervous system and bridge the desire gap, even when it feels impossible?

In this week’s episode of Relationship Renovation, EJ Kerwin and Tarah Kerwin dive into The Intimacy Gap (Part 2): The Silent Saboteurs — How Stress, Shame, and Mismatched Desire Sabotage Connection.

Building on Part 1 of their four-part intimacy series, they unpack why intimacy doesn’t simply fade—it’s slowly chipped away by stress, shame, dysregulated nervous systems, and repeated miscommunication.

Through honest, vulnerable stories about blending families, parenting challenges, and financial strain, EJ and Tarah reveal how nervous system overload is often misread as withdrawal or rejection. That misunderstanding fuels a painful cycle of blame, distance, and desire discrepancies that many couples mistake for incompatibility.

In This Episode, You’ll Learn:

  • How stress and shame shut down emotional and sexual desire
  • Why mismatched desire is normal—and what it actually means
  • How nervous system dysregulation masquerades as disinterest
  • Tools to shift from reactivity to curiosity
  • Practical steps to restore emotional safety and rebuild connection
  • Ways to communicate vulnerably when intimacy feels out of sync

With research-supported insights and relatable real-life examples, EJ and Tarah show you how moving from “calm to connect” can help couples step out of shame, regulate together, and create a new intimacy story—one rooted in empathy, safety, and lasting closeness.
