Beauty Blogging, PRs, and the “Hey Lovely” Dilemma with the British Beauty Blogger 22 Nov 202400:24:07

In this episode of PR LIKE A BOSS!, host Patz chats with Jane Cunningham, better known as the British Beauty Blogger. A pioneer in beauty journalism and de-influencing, Jane shares her candid insights into the ever-changing dynamics between beauty bloggers, brands, and PRs.

We dive into:

The evolution of beauty blogging—from its humble beginnings to the influencer era.

Why “Hi Lovely” emails make Jane hit delete faster than you can say “mass pitch.”

The importance of writing for your audience, not the brands.

Tips for smaller brands on how to approach influencers (hint: skip the discount codes).

Why respect, authenticity, and boundaries are key to successful collaborations.

Jane also spills her golden rule for pitching and shares her thoughts on staying true to your voice in a crowded industry.

From Catwalks to Content: Ruth Crilly on Pivots & Perfecting the Hustle07 Feb 202500:31:21

What happens when you take a model, add a beauty blog, sprinkle in some influencer know-how and top it off with a book deal? You get Ruth Crilly, an OG beauty blogger, content queen and author of How Not to Be a Supermodel

In this episode Patz sits down with Ruth to chat about her journey from modelling to writing, the art of personal branding, and why knowing your limits is just as important as chasing new ventures. Spoiler: Ruth once launched an app and learned the hard way that diversifying isn’t always the answer!

Ruth started blogging as a creative outlet while modelling and working on her MA in creative writing. Little did she know, A Model Recommends would explode, turning her into one of the UK’s most trusted beauty voices.

Writing a book? That was always the goal. But juggling content creation, brand partnerships and social media made it nearly impossible until Ruth realised she had to hit pause on everything else to get it done. Lesson learned? Multitasking is overrated.

Ruth shares golden nuggets on managing brand consistency, why casually polling Instagram followers asking for feedback is a game-changer and how sometimes, just focusing on one thing (yes, just one!) can be the ultimate productivity hack.

Plus, there’s a hilarious game of Beauty Bestseller or Back to the Drawing Board, where we almost launched a lipstick line, a bath oil that reads your mood, and a book-themed eyeshadow palette. (Still waiting on that Dragons' Den pitch...)

If you’re a content creator, entrepreneur, or beauty enthusiast trying to navigate the ever-changing digital landscape, this episode is a must-listen. Packed with humour, wisdom, and a few “oh, that was a bad idea” moments, Ruth proves that reinvention is all about adaptability.

The Power of a Pill & a Laser: How Lucy Goff is Redefining Wellness18 Apr 202500:31:42

Ever been told your idea won’t work? Lucy Goff has, more times than she can count. But that didn’t stop her from founding LYMA, the science-led wellness brand shaking up everything we thought we knew about supplements and skincare.

After a traumatic health crisis, a chance encounter with longevity expert Dr. Paul Clayton led Lucy to pharmaceutical-grade supplements that brought her back to life. That spark became LYMA: peer-reviewed, patented, powerhouse formulations unlike anything else on the market.

Then came the game-changing LYMA Laser, a £2K at-home device delivering £30K clinical results without damaging skin. Featured by TIME Magazine, backed by published clinical studies, and now being explored by the NHS for cancer recovery and wound healing? Yes, it’s that big.

Lucy gets real about launching mid-life, silencing the naysayers (especially the male ones), and why Forbes named her a 50 Over 50 trailblazer.

🎧 It’s wellness, redefined. It’s PR LIKE A BOSS!

MENTIONED:

Whether you’re a beauty nerd, science lover, or dreaming up your own brand from the kitchen table, Lucy’s story is proof that one woman, one laser and a whole lot of courage can change an industry.

In this episode, we cover:
  • Why your shampoo routine might be sabotaging your skincare
  • How beauty sleep really works
  • What hay fever, hormones and stress have to do with your flare-ups

  • And of course, the PR moments that helped Skin Genius rise in a crowded market

From Mosh Pits to Moisturiser: How Sara Stokes Is Changing Pregnancy Skincare for Good27 Jun 202500:31:11

What do the Arctic Monkeys and moisturisers have in common? Sara Stokes.

In this episode of PR LIKE A BOSS, Sara joins Patz to spill all on her unexpected journey from managing rock bands to launching SKN TO SKN, a category-first skincare brand for women who are pregnant, trying to conceive, postpartum or breastfeeding. She opens up about the frustrating moment that sparked the brand, why pregnancy-safe skincare is still so misunderstood, and how she built a purpose-led business that’s as stylish as it is science-backed.

Highlights from the Episode:

  • Backstage to boardroom: From 15 years in the music industry to building her own brand, Sara shares how she swapped festivals for formulations.
  • The “WTF” moment in Boots: Discover the ingredient shock that changed everything and why the skincare aisle felt like a total letdown.
  • Science meets soul: From retinol confusion to 183-page toxicology reports, Sara explains how her team is raising the bar on pregnancy-safe skincare.
  • PR pinch-me moment: Her Irish Independent headline? “I toured with U2 but gave it all up for my children – now I have my own skincare brand for pregnant women.” Iconic.
  • Trend watch: She’s all for SPF, but face taping? “Mental,” she says. (We agree.)

Why SKN TO SKN is More Than Just Products:

This isn’t just about what’s in the bottle. It’s about representation, safety, and empowering women in one of life’s most transformational chapters. Sara’s mission is clear: educate, elevate, and never make a new mum choose between safety and skincare that works.

“Clean Beauty Is Bullsh*t!” Nadine Baggott on PR Lies & Industry Myths 12 Sep 202500:58:37

Why did Nadine Baggott, veteran beauty journalist, Times columnist, TV presenter, expert content creator — turn down a six-figure campaign with a refillable natural deodorant brand? Simple. Because it was rooted in fear, not facts.

“Clean beauty is a conspiracy. It’s all bullshit. Complete and utter bullshit.”

🔥 Yes, she said it — and we loved her for it.

In this episode, Nadine breaks down how the beauty industry has become a minefield of misinformation, how algorithms have fuelled fear-based marketing and why brands need to stop chasing trends that undermine science.

She explains why she values clinical trials over consumer opinions, how the industry went from structured to chaotic in under a decade and why authenticity and expertise matter more now than ever before.

Plus:

  • What she really thinks of skin cycling
  • Why she refuses to promote products rooted in pseudoscience
  • The difference between a PR pitch that works vs. one that gets deleted on sight
  • The three things every brand needs to be: Better. Cheaper. Unique.

Whether you're in PR, beauty, or just obsessed with the skincare aisle at Boots, this one’s essential listening.

Breathwork, Burnout & Boardrooms: How Sophrology Is Helping Leaders Breathe Like a Boss31 Oct 202500:39:30

If you’ve ever tried meditation and ended up writing your shopping list instead (like me), this one’s for you.

In this week’s episode of PR LIKE A BOSS!, I sat down with Dominique Antiglio, Wellness Entrepreneur, Sophrology Expert and Founder of BeSophro to explore the surprisingly powerful connection between breathwork and business.

Sophrology, as Dominique explains, is a mind–body practice that blends breathing, gentle movement, relaxation and visualisation to calm the nervous system and unlock new potential. “Think meditation,” she says, “but for people who can’t sit still.”

Having trained under Dr. Alfonso Caycedo, the founder of Sophrology, Dominique is now pioneering the practice in the English-speaking world through BeSophro and her best-selling book The Life-Changing Power of Sophrology. Her client list reads like a who’s who of high performance, Amazon, Bloomberg, The UK Government, The World Economic Forum, The Wellcome Trust and even Silicon Valley founders.

The episode touches on everything from reframing limiting beliefs (yes, your brain really can be retrained) to using Sophrology as a storytelling tool, helping leaders project the confident, calm energy they want to put out into the world.

Dominique also shares practical advice for entrepreneurs dealing with digital overwhelm, trolls and tight deadlines: “Sometimes you just need to jump on the spot, shake it out and remember, stress can also mean excitement.”

From Glossy Pages to Digital Wellness: PR Lessons from Susannah Taylor17 Oct 202500:38:22

When it comes to media wisdom with a side of moisturiser, few people are more qualified to spill than Susannah Taylor. From cutting her teeth at The Telegraph with the legendary Hilary Alexander, to becoming Beauty & Health Editor at Vogue, launching Get The Gloss, and now championing wellbeing through her Glo-Gazette newsletter and Ways to Feel More Human podcast, Susannah’s seen it all. And thankfully, she's still replying to her emails. In this refreshing episode of PR LIKE A BOSS! Susannah joined me to share what’s changed, what still matters and what makes her hit delete real fast when reading a PR pitch.

Highlights & Hot Takes:
  • “Hi Hun”... it's a no from her. Susannah's golden rule? “If it doesn’t say ‘Dear Susannah’... delete.” That personal touch still matters.
  • Forget the fluff – give her something meaningful. She loves a good pitch, but not when it’s mass-blasted or buzzword-heavy. “Make it real. Make it relevant. And please don’t pitch another ‘miracle’ lip oil…”
  • PR is a relationship game. Always was. Still is. Whether she was at Glamour or building Get the Gloss, PR pros were a huge part of the story. “Some of the best things I’ve done in my career came from real human connections.”
  • Don’t underestimate the power of a story. Authenticity? Non-negotiable. “The brands that cut through now have real stories, not just trending ingredients.”
  • The pace of media may have sped up but the most valuable messages slow people down. With Glo-Gazette, Susannah is purposefully creating a “breather in your inbox”, a welcome break from frantic scrolling.

In a world of reels, DMs and “just circling back” emails, Susannah reminds us that real relationships still win. Whether you’re pitching a serum or telling your founder story, tailor it, mean it and above all keep it human!
