Recapping Virginia Tech vs. Minnesota, Previewing the CFP Semifinals08 Jan 202501:01:52
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back to recap the Duke's Mayo Bowl where Virginia Tech faced off against Minnesota. Head coach PJ Fleck was doused with mayonnaise after the Golden Gophers took down the Hokies 24-10 in Charlotte. The guys then preview both games from the College Football Playoff Semifinals, where Ohio State takes on Texas and Penn State faces off against Notre Dame. There is the potential to be an all-Big Ten finals in the first ever expanded CFP, as the Buckeyes are nearly a touchdown favorite over the Longhorns and the Nittany Lions are a 1.5 point underdog to the Fighting Irish. After a week zero taste, Pac-12 football is fully back with 12 week one games to preview and pick31 Aug 202301:52:06
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio talking about the first real week of Pac-12 football with the entire Conference of Champions in action with a variety of out of conference games. Last week we got a little taste of Pac-12 football with USC taking care of business against San Jose State. This week we get a lot more excitement starting on Thursday night when the Florida Gators make the trip to Salt Lake City to take on the Utah Utes. Kenny Dillingham also gets his head coaching career started on Thursday night when the Sun Devils host Southern Utah. On Friday Stanford takes an interesting road trip to take on Hawaii, a team that fought hard in their week zero loss to Vanderbilt. Then on Saturday we have some cupcake games but also a few interesting contests including Colorado at TCU, Boise State at Washington, California visiting (!!!) North Texas and Washington State at (!!!) Colorado State. Opening weekend wraps up with a Sunday afternoon showdown with Oregon State visiting San Jose State. The Beavers should be great this season but this one is on the road, SJSU has already played a game and was within a touchdown against USC in the Coliseum. The guys also discuss some of the other news and notes from around the conference including the bizarre self imposed postseason ban by Arizona State athletic director Ray Anderson and the Bay Area schools' efforts to join the ACC. As usual Ryan and Dave end the podcast answering listener emails and questions from the YouTube chat. DON'T FORGET TO ENTER YOUR PAC-12 SURVIVAL POOL PICKS HERE!!! USC hires Jen Cohen from UW, picking every Pac-12 football game for 2023 plus our week zero preview22 Aug 202301:39:55
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio talking about actual Pac-12 football as we are just days away from the kickoff of the 2023 college football season. Before the start of each Pac-12 football campaign Ryan and Dave go through the entire schedule and document their picks for each program in the Conference of Champions, including the eventual winner in Las Vegas. They also begin their game previews and picks against the spread in this episode (with only week zero game on the schedule), San Jose State visiting USC on Saturday night. The show starts off with the breaking news that USC has hired away Jennifer Cohen from Washington to become the Trojans new athletic director. It should be an exciting final season in the Pac-12 with as many as six teams in the mix to win the last Conference of Champions championship. On paper the Pac-12 appears to have an upper class and a middle class and it will be interesting to see if any of those lower ranked teams are able to jump up and derail the season for the programs in the upper half of the standings. Ryan and Dave reveal which teams they are believing in and which teams they think are the bottom dwellers in the conference as they reveal their game by game picks and prediction for regular season records. For week zero there is only one Pac-12 program in action, the USC Trojans. Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams leads the way against San Jose State at 5pm Saturday night in the Coliseum. The guys give their pick against the 30.5 point spread and start their season long contest of game picking prowess. Part two of our Pac-12 football previews including UW, Oregon and Utah17 Aug 202302:13:01
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio and once again trying very hard to not talk about conference realignment. Next weekend we have actual football with USC hosting San Jose State in week zero plus Utah welcoming Florida to Salt Lake City and Arizona State facing Southern Utah on Thursday, August 31. To honor the long awaited start to the 2023 college football season (and the final one for the Pac-12 conference as we know it), we are continuing with our team season previews. Last week we previewed USC, UCLA, Arizona , Arizona State, Colorado and Oregon State so this week we will focus on Oregon, Utah, Washington, Washington State, Stanford and California hearing from the 247Sports publishers of their respective sites. The guys also go over some of the other news and notes from around the conference including the newly released AP Poll that includes USC (6), Washington (10), Utah (14), Oregon (15) and Oregon State (18) with UCLA also receiving some votes. Part one of our Pac-12 football previews (actual football talk)10 Aug 202301:52:43
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio and NOT talking about conference realignment (well, maybe a little). With the opening weekend of the 2023 college football season just a couple of weeks away the guys jump right in with their Pac-12 previews. For months all of the focus has been on the pending demise of the Pac-12 conference, which finally came to fruition last week. But the last year of the Conference of Champions should be an epic one, with half the conference having a legit shot at winning the title, several of the top quarterbacks in the country and three exciting new coaches including Coach Prime in Colorado. This week the focus is on previewing the Arizona Wildcats, Arizona State Sun Devils, Colorado Buffaloes, Oregon State Beavers, USC Trojans and the UCLA Bruins. After the previews the guys talk about the latest rumors surrounding Cal and Stanford potentially going to the ACC, what could happen with Washington State and Oregon State and the newly released preseason coaches poll. Also, does commissioner George Kliavkoff have a future with the entity formerly known as the Conference of Champions? As usual Ryan and Dave end the podcast answering listener emails and questions from the YouTube chat. For the video simulcasts of our POC please subscribe to your YouTube channel! EMERGENCY Podcast of Champions - RIP to the premier athletic conference on the West Coast05 Aug 202302:00:13
In another special EMERGENCY episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back discussing the sad and disappointing news that the Pac-12, the premier athletic conference on the West Coast for more than 100 years, is dead. The Conference of Champions was listing for the past 13 months after it's hull was breached by the USC and UCLA defection torpedoes. There was a path to save the ship but commissioner George Kliavkoff seemingly made the situation worse at every turn, allowing for the final death blow from Oregon and Washington on Friday followed by Arizona, Arizona State and Utah getting off the sinking ship thanks to a Big 12 life raft. The guys talk about this shocking development that comes just two weeks after the commissioner assured the college football world on Pac-12 Media Day that everything was going to alright. It wasn't and it wasn't close. Now we have to wait and see what happens with the remaining four members, Stanford, California, Oregon State and Washington State, who are unfortunate casualties in the conference realignment madness. The rumored Pac-12 media rights deal & more potential Big Ten expansion03 Aug 202301:25:08
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio talking about the reported new Pac-12 media rights deal that commissioner George Kliavkoff presented to the remaining nine presidents and chancellors. According to reports the top deal on the table is heavy into streaming with Apple TV carrying the majority of the games with a separate Pac-12 package that would be available for purchase. The reported revenue is below what the Big 12 has with ESPN and Fox, but there are revenue boosters that kick in when more fans subscribe. There is also multiple reports that the Big Ten is looking to expand further with their sights set on Oregon and Washington with the possibility of adding Stanford and California as well. Clemson and Florida State were also mentioned, but both of those programs are locked up for years with the ACC's grant of rights deal. EMERGENCY Podcast of Champions - Colorado is leaving the Pac-12 for the Big 1227 Jul 202301:26:59
In this special EMERGENCY episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods rushed into the studio to talk about the BREAKING NEWS that Colorado is planning on leaving the Pac-12 and joining the Big 12. Of course our own Mr. Woods was the first to report this months ago, but with real reporters putting this out there now appears to be much more official. The guys talk about this shocking development just days after Pac-12 Media Day where commissioner George Kliavkoff said a media rights deal was imminent and that all 10 member institutions would be sticking together. Recapping Pac-12 Media Day from Las Vegas22 Jul 202300:55:48
Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods were in Las Vegas for the 2023 Pac-12 Media Day, the first such event in Vegas and the last event that USC and UCLA will be a part of. Commissioner George Kliavkoff hasn't spoken publicly this calendar year despite all of the negative press surrounding the Conference of Champions' lack of a media rights deal. Most felt the unofficial deadline for announcing the new TV rights was on Pac-12 Media Day, but Kliavkoff made it clear from the jump that there would be no such announcement yet. He wanted the focus to be on the football (which should be the best we've seen in a decade) but unfortunately there has been so much buildup and anticipation for this media rights deal that the focus couldn't be on anything but the survivability of the conference. Everyone knows that without at least a decent TV contract that brings much needed revenue to the Pac-12 athletic departments there is a legitimate chance that at least one or two members could bounce. If that happens it is debatable if the conference could even survive after losing USC and UCLA last year. Kliavkoff and the athletic directors are still confident there will be a good deal and everyone will stay put, but until it happens the speculation will continue to run wild and overshadow any football boom the Pac-12 teams could have on the field of play. All-Pac-12 Preseason squad by position plus Media Day preview13 Jul 202301:26:39
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio counting down towards Pac-12 Media Day by going over their preseason All-Pac-12 teams by position including projecting the 2023 pecking order for all of the teams in the conference. The Pac-12 sent out their preseason media ballots so the guys go over who they selected and discuss their picks to win the conference in the final Pac-12 season that will include USC and UCLA. With just over a week before the media gather in Las Vegas for Pac-12 Media Day, the conference still hasn't announced their long awaited media rights deal. The guys talk about the possibility that commissioner George Kliavkoff doesn't have a deal in place by media day. If there is no deal the focus will certainly be on the uncertain future of the conference with no television contract instead of the stacked upper half of the conference, the stable of high caliber quarterbacks including the reigning Heisman Trophy winner in Caleb Williams and new head coaches Deion Sanders, Kenny Dillingham and Troy Tayler looking to turn around Colorado, Arizona State and Stanford respectively. Recapping Big Ten Playoff Games, Previewing Minnesota vs. Virginia Tech03 Jan 202501:39:32
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back to recap the SIX Big Ten bowl/playoff games from this week, including Ohio State whomping Oregon in the Rose Bowl and Penn State outclassing Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. Ranking top head coaches in the Pac-12 plus NCAA's take on NIL collectives29 Jun 202301:22:53
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio trying to figure out what they can talk about while everyone patiently waits for the long awaited announcement of the new Pac-12 media rights deal. To help pass the time the guys bring in Dave Bartoo, co-founder of Matrix Analytical, to talk about where the head coaches in the Pac-12 are ranked according to his analytical data analysis. They have USC head coach Lincoln Riley as the No. 3 head coach in the country and tops in the Pac-12, but he's on the same tier as two other Pac-12 head coaches. Bartoo goes over a few tiers of head coaches with Riley at the top and brand new head coaches (with no data) like Kenny Dillingham at the bottom. They guys also talk about the new NCAA memo that addresses how colleges and their respective collectives should be handling Name, Image and Likeness for student athletes. Will this memo have any teeth and scare off some of the more aggressive collectives out there? Probably not, but it should be fun to see the NCAA try to put the toothpaste back in the tube. More Pac-12 media rights rumors continues plus SDSU tries a power move20 Jun 202301:18:48
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio talking about the latest rumors surrounding the pending Pac-12 media rights deal including the potential of an uneven split of post season generated revenue and a rather low annual number floated out there by WildcatAuthority publisher Jason Scheer. The Atlantic Coast Conference has already discussed trying to appease its power members with uneven splits of College Football Playoff bonuses and NCAA Tournament bonuses, giving the postseason participants a greater share. There has been talk that the Pac-12 is discussing a similar strategy, rewarding programs that invest more into their revenue sports. The guys also talk about San Diego State informing the Mountain West Conference of their intent to leave and their request for an extension of their June 30 deadline for official departure notification (afterwards their exit fee would go from $17 million to $34 million). SDSU doesn't have a destination yet, presumably the Pac-12 or the Big 12, but they are trying to find a way to get out as cheaply as possible if a Power Five offer materializes. They also talk about the Pac-12 recruiting rankings for the class of 2024 and give an update on Colorado's roster situation including Coach Prime telling naysayers to take their shots now because they won't be able to shoot later. Pac-12 Grant of Rights agreement, early TV schedule release plus Holiday Bowl suing UCLA08 Jun 202301:32:33
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions host Ryan Abraham is back from another long vacation and then got sick so the show with David Woods was postponed. Now Ryan is in studio and David joins remotely, talking about the reported Grant of Right agreement between the remaining Pac-12 programs (as long as a suitable media rights deal comes to fruition). They also talk about the release of the television schedule for the first three weeks of the Pac-12 football season with some interesting match-ups on at some interesting times (and on interesting channels), including Colorado on national television for all three weeks, twice on Fox's Big Noon Kickoff, Washington at Michigan State on Peacock and Florida coming to Salt Lake City on an ESPN Thursday night broadcast. The guys also talk about the Pac-12's longtime partner, the Holiday Bowl, suing UCLA and the conference for the Bruins cancelling the game hours before kickoff back in the 2021 season. Of course, how can we have a show without more conference realignment talk? The guys discuss the latest rumors surrounding Colorado's flirtation with the Big 12 and Arizona State University securing AAU status, making them a more appealing target for other conferences. Jason Scheer also tried to torpedo his own mentions when he Tweeted, "Washington is recognized by both the Big 10 and Pac-12 as having more value than Oregon." The SEC announced they would only be playing 8 conference games in 2024, despite the addition of Texas and Oklahoma to the rotation. This makes it possible for those bottom dweller SEC programs to beat four nonconference cupcakes, go 2-6 in conference and still make a bowl game. They round out the show talking about Ryan's extended vacation, the Pac-12 paying $10 million to un-renovate their San Francisco offices, the Pac-12 Media Day moving to Las Vegas and the continued silence of commissioner George Kliavkoff on any and all topics including the most important one, the Pac-12's new media rights deal. Pac-12 in last place in Power Five for annual revenue, more media rights rumors plus USC AD Mike Bohn resigns19 May 202301:13:37
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods return to talk about the newly released Pac-12 annual revenue numbers that while came in at record levels, are still dead last among the Power Five conferences with a $21 million gap per school between the Big Ten. The guys talk about what those numbers mean and how that gap is only going to increase with the new SEC and Big Ten media deals kicking in next year. The guys also talk about the latest on the Pac-12 media rights front including interviews by Washington State president Kirk Schulz and Arizona State athletic director Ray Anderson, giving two very different timeline estimations for when this deal will finally get done. There is also a deadline looming if the Pac-12 wants to add San Diego State for the 2024 season, as the SDSU exit fee of $17 million to the Mountain West will triple on July 1. Plus the Pac-12 is making some changes to enhance the television product for football games including putting microphones on players and coaches pregame and interviews with head coaches during games and the new proposed California legislation that would allow football athletes to share athletic department revenue. At the very end of the podcast news broke that USC athletic director Mike Bohn was resigning. The guys give their quick reaction to this out of the blue story with the Trojan athletic department now in search of new leadership with a move to the Big Ten on the horizon. UCLA wraps up spring football plus more media rights deal rumors11 May 202301:35:03
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio talking about the final Pac-12 program to wrap up spring football, the UCLA Bruins. Head coach Chip Kelly decided to forgo any sort of spring game, instead opting to finish the spring workouts with a Friday morning practice in front of about 50 fans that featured some situational scrimmage situations including wide receiver and defensive back one-on-one drills. Our own David Woods talks about UCLA's "15th training session" as Kelly called it, the starting quarterback battle, the reason the Pac-12 didn't televise the final practice and lots more. The guys also discuss the ongoing saga of the Pac-12 media rights deal including an interesting report out of Utah that claims that Amazon is out and ESPN is still in, but the sports leader has a financial cap on their tier one offer. They also talk about the Comcast overpayment mess, early odds to win the conference for all 12 programs and the crazy gambling scandals that are popping up across college athletics. Pac-12 in the NFL Draft, transfer portal closes, the Colorado exodus plus Oregon spring game02 May 202301:18:44
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio talking about the Oregon Ducks spring game that featured Heisman hopeful Bo Nix playing in front of 45,000 fans Saturday afternoon in Autzen Stadium. Dan Lanning's defense started out strong and kept the Ducks offense at bay in what turned out to be a low scoring affair with the Green team edging out the Yellow team 23-20. That leaves only UCLA as the lone Pac-12 program that has yet to complete spring football practice and as of now Chip Kelly has no plans to host an actual spring game. The guys also talk about how the Pac-12 programs did in the 2023 NFL Draft with 9 of the 12 programs getting at least one player selected (only Arizona, Colorado and Washington did not). Oregon led the way with six overall selections followed by Stanford (!!!) with five, USC and UCLA with four, Utah with three and Oregon State with two. California, Washington and Arizona State each had one player drafted over the weekend. Overall the Pac-12 had 27 players selected, the fewest among the Power Five conferences (SEC 62, Big10 55, ACC 32 & Big12 30). The NCAA Transfer Portal spring window has now closed and no one saw more action in the country than Coach Prime and Colorado. We get an update from BuffStampede.com publisher Adam Munsterteiger about how many players left and where the Buffs go from here to completely rebuild the roster heading into the 2023 season. The guys also discuss the overall portal numbers and a few of the Pac-12 players that made moves late in the window. For the video simulcasts of our POC please subscribe to your YouTube channel! More Pac-12 spring game recaps including 45,000+ fans in Colorado25 Apr 202301:25:15
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio talking Pac-12 spring football with six more spring games occurring over the weekend including the sellout for the Colorado Buffaloes, 45,000+ fans to watch the debut of Coach Prime in Boulder. Despite four inches of snow falling and the field needing to be cleared, the Buffalos spring game spectacle went on as planned with ESPN broadcasting the entire event over two hours on Saturday afternoon. From one of the worst teams in college football history last season, Colorado now has a new sense of hope with the excitement around the program at historic levels, matching the increase in talent that Deion Sanders has brought in. There were also five other Pac-12 spring games scheduled over the weekend with Washington, Washington State, Oregon State and Utah completing their spring with various events on Pac-12 Network plus Stanford holding more of a televised practice with three more spring practices left for Troy Taylor's squad. We also look back at the Arizona State spring that we didn't get to on last week's show. The guys also talk about the latest reports regarding the Pac-12 media rights deal that suggests the conference could go with Apple holding all of the conference's tier one rights and a linear television partner that could be the CW. There is also a new lawsuit filed against the Pac-12 regarding the firings of a pair of former conference executives, Oregon State AD Scott Barnes is in stable condition after being hospitalized over the weekend, no more clock stoppages after a first down plus USC lands a five-star defensive tackle out of the NCAA Transfer Portal. Spring game recaps from Arizona, California and USC19 Apr 202301:10:05
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio talking Pac-12 spring football with three programs finishing up their spring workouts, Arizona, California and USC. The guys may not have watched these spring games (not even Ryan!) but they will discuss the biggest news and notes from the spring games as these three teams head into the long off-season. Hope springs eternal in the spring and with new faces on the roster the Sun Devils, Golden Bears and Trojans are all feeling optimistic about the changes that were made heading into the 2023 college football season. The guys also talk about the spring window of the NCAA Transfer Portal opening, sparking two weeks of potential turmoil across the college football landscape. The biggest name to enter the portal is former five-star edge rusher from Washington Sav'ell Smalls. The most active program in the portal is no surprise, the Colorado Buffalos with Coach Prime making some moves including 12 more players leaving and an all-conference safety joining the ranks from the Mountain West. Spring football updates from Colorado, Utah and Oregon plus media rights deal delay10 Apr 202301:23:46
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio with even more spring football updates from around the Pac-12. Last week the guys heard from Oregon State, Washington, Washington State, California, Stanford, USC, UCLA, Arizona State and Arizona. This week they will finish off their Conference of Champions tour hearing from Colorado, Utah and Oregon. The Buffs have the most excitement around their program with Coach Prime selling out the Colorado spring game, which will be broadcast live on ESPN. Oregon returns quarterback Bo Nix and is looking to taking its talented roster all the way to a Pac-12 title. Utah is coming off of back-to-back conference championships and with Cam Rising out, most of the focus will be on who wins the backup quarterback spot. The guys also talk about the latest reports regarding the media rights deal with what everyone felt would be done within weeks now looks like it will take months. Multiple reports are pointing to a late spring or early summer timeline for when the new media rights deal will be announced, which will be about a year out of the expiration of the current deal. There was also another potential media partner named in reports, the CW Network. For the video simulcasts of our POC please subscribe to your YouTube channel! Spring football updates from around the Conference of Champions06 Apr 202301:31:11
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio talking once again about all things Pac-12 football. As we creep further into April (how did that happen so fast?) the guys reached out to the various publishers around the Conference of Champions to get updates on how spring football practice is going for each Pac-12 program. There are some new coaches, lots of new players and even a couple of new quarterbacks making their Pac-12 debuts so we get the skinny on how everyone is acclimating in their new environments and how much excitement and enthusiasm is being generated (here's looking at you Colorado). The guys also talk about the impressive run future Pac-12 conference member San Diego State made in the NCAA Tournament, nearly bringing the first major championship to the Conference of Champions since USC won a football title in 2004 (the last basketball championship was Arizona in 1997). Everything is still quiet on the media rights front but Dennis Dodd is reporting that the Pac-12 is more likely to have a much higher percentage of its games on streaming platforms rather than linear television. Will that be an issue, even if the money gets close to the Big 12 if the Pac-12 has more than half its games streaming and the Big 12 has less than 30%? We are all still waiting to see how much money these programs will make and how much national exposure they will enjoy in 2024 and beyond. Future Pac-12 member San Diego State makes the Final Four29 Mar 202301:08:51
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio with not a whole lot to talk about when it comes to how the Pac-12 fared during March Madness. No. 2 seed Arizona was out hours after the tournament began and No. 2 seed UCLA couldn't make it out of the Sweet 16, falling to recent nemesis Gonzaga. But soon to be Conference of Champions member San Diego State took care of business against No. 1 Alabama and made the Final Four for the first time in program history, so we are going to count that as a win for the Pac-12. While there hasn't been any real news about conference realignment or a new media rights deal for the Pac-12, with SDSU making the Final Four it seems nearly impossible for George Kliavkoff and the Pac-12 presidents to not bring the Aztecs into the fold. Since 2010, San Diego State has the highest combined winning percentage of any Division I school in football and men's basketball at 73.8%, ahead of Ohio State (72.9%) and Oregon (71.1%). SDSU's academics are better, they have built a new stadium, the have beat Pac-12 teams on the gridiron consistently and bring a foothold back into the Southern California for recruiting, how could Kliavkoff say no? Pac-12's March Madness flop and potential home stretch for a media rights deal21 Mar 202301:04:31
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back to talk about the disappointing opening weekend for the Pac-12 in the NCAA basketball tournament, with three of the four programs that made it to the Big Dance getting bounced out on Thursday/Friday. Arizona State did get a win in the First Four to advance to the field of 64, but lost a tough one against TCU. USC looked flat yet again and had no answers for tournament tested Michigan State who once again made it to the Sweet 16. The biggest flop came early on Thursday with Arizona as a No. 2 seed succumbing to No. 15 Princeton, which would have been the biggest upset of the tournament had it not been for No. 1 Purdue losing to No. 16 Fairleigh Dickinson. The UCLA Bruins are the only Pac-12 program left in the field (unless you want to count San Diego State) and they will face off against Gonzaga in Las Vegas on Thursday. For the third season in a row the Bruins will face the Bulldogs having lost in Final Four of 2021 and in T-Mobile Arena last season. Overall UCLA is 2-5 against the Zags with three of those games in the NCAA Tournament. The guys also talk about the latest rumors in the Pac-12 media rights negotiations saga, with the presidents of Arizona and Arizona State making statements about the deal being nearly done and still not a peep out of commissioner George Kliavkoff. Will he be able to pull off a lucrative deal that makes enough money for each athletic department to keep them competitive and also have enough exposure to keep West Coast football relevant? It appears that some sort of deal with ESPN, Amazon and Apple could accomplish that, but until something is announced we continue to await the fate of the Conference of Champions. Podcast of Champions - Intrepid Basketball Report Ryan Abraham Reports on Location from Las Vegas10 Mar 202300:58:03
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are recording remotely with Ryan at the Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas. The guys will talk about Ryan being a degenerate, the future of the Pac-12, Chip Kelly's contract extension, and will actually answer questions about basketball for the first and only time this season. Ryan first talked about his first night in Vegas, which was a story of loss and sorrow. The boys then rebounded to talk about actual basketball for God knows what reason, before transitioning into Ryan's favorite topic: granular details about media rights. Trying desperately to save the show, the fells transitioned to questions from the listeners. They did not succeed in saving the show. Pac-12 Football Media Day moves to Las Vegas02 Mar 202301:34:54
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio trying to talk about anything but the potential demise of the Conference of Champions, which will be nearly impossible to do until a lucrative media rights deal is secured and the remaining 10 members are satisfied with the payouts. The guys start off the show talking about a move that everyone anticipated after the conference hired George Kliavkoff as commissioner, the Pac-12 football media day will be moving to Las Vegas! Ryan doesn't need much of an excuse to head to Vegas so he will be there, but will David be able to break away from his kids midweek for his final Pac-12 media day? We shall see. While they are trying not to talk about the conference breaking up, they will discuss what some prominent members of the college football media and sports business reporters are saying about what potential media partners are available for Kliavkoff to team up with and what sort of deal he could expect with the 10 programs he has now or with the addition of others like San Diego State and SMU. Unfortunately, the current marketplace isn't favorable for the Pac-12 and that is one of the reasons the projections for the new media rights deal aren't very promising. Unless Kliavkoff can pull something spectacular off, some sort of out of the box deal that delivers cash to his members and also gets their programs more visibility, the speculation surrounding schools leaving for other conferences will continue to grow. The best news for Kliavkoff is that the Big Ten still doesn't have a replacement commissioner for the outgoing Kevin Warren, but the Big 12 is like a wolf on the prowl and appears to be ready to pounce if any Pac-12 program isn't happy with the new deal. Dave also provides some potential breaking news as he has heard that Utah and Colorado have already decided to leave the Pac-12. How credible is this information? Dave said he heard it from the same guy who told him two days before it happened that USC and UCLA were leaving, so we shall see.  We're not sure if Wednesday's Los Angeles hail storm was some sort of omen for the Pac-12, but Dave's Tweet of the storm did give us an unexpected glimpse into his backyard and maybe the reason why he wasn't a fan of the show, 'The Last of Us.' Can George Kliavkoff pull off a miracle media rights deal for the Pac-12?23 Feb 202301:32:11
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio talking about all of the buzz around commissioner George Kliavkoff and the remaining 10 Pac-12 programs that are desperately trying to work out a lucrative media rights deal. All eyes are on Kliavkoff who is trying to pull off some sort of miracle and get the Conference of Champions a television contract that will surpass the ACC and Big 12 and keep the Pac-12 members happy. The guys discuss all of the reports and rumors that are floating around including partnering with Amazon or Apple for the first Tier One college football media rights deal on a streaming service, expanding the conference footprint to include Texas with SMU and Southern California with San Diego State and even forming some sort of merger with the Big 12, creating the first CFB super conference. They also take a look at the state of mind of Oregon and Washington and if Ohio State cancelling the home and home with the Huskies will make anyone nervous in the Pacific Northwest. Pac-12 Conference Board Members issue joint statement on pending media rights deal14 Feb 202301:26:24
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio discussing the long and drawn out pending media rights deal for the Pac-12 conference. On Super Bowl Monday the Pac-12 Conference Board Members issued joint statement that addressed the long wait for an announcement on media rights, but it did little to give fans of the Conference of Champions confidence that a big payday for the remaining 10 schools is coming. According to the statement the media rights deal or deals would be done "in the near future," there have been "positive" conversations with "multiple potential media rights partners" and that the conference is "highly confident in our future growth and success as a conference and united in our commitment to one another." The guys breakdown what they took away from this joint statement including the fact that it came from the board members and not commissioner George Kliavkoff. They also talk about what some of those outside of the Pac-12 footprint are saying, including projections of doom and gloom for the PAC. Speaking of Kliavkoff, he was seen at a Southern Methodist basketball game and has reportedly been in conference expansion discussions with SMU and San Diego State. Some are speculating that the media rights delay is in part due to the need for increased game inventory and that Kliavkoff may need to add two more teams to have more games to sell to potential media partners. They also talk about Utah quarterback Cam Rising tearing his ACL but still aiming for a return before the start of the 2023 season and Utes offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig not taking the same position at Notre Dame, in part because of his rather large buyout. With his pulse on West Coast recruiting, Huffman goes over how each and every program in the Conference of Champions improved their roster through high school recruiting and the NCAA Transfer Portal. They guys also talk about some of the news and notes from around the conference including Nick Saban and Alabama trying to poach Washington offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, former five-star quarterback Sam Huard leaving the Huskies for Cal Poly and rumors about the upcoming Pac-12 media rights deal. Pac-12 2023 football schedule release plus Pac-12 Network overpayment scandal 26 Jan 202301:44:41
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio discussing the newly released 2023 Pac-12 football schedule which appears to have been given some serious thought from George Kliavkoff and company. Colorado comes out of the gate with a tough slate in an attempt to capture all of the momentum of Coach Prime. Oregon has a lot of high profile matchups but they are spread out throughout the season including a bye before playing Washington. And USC's schedule is backloaded, closing the season with a series of ranked teams and a week 13 bye before a potential return to the Pac-12 Championship Game. They guys also talk about George Kliavkoff firing a couple of Pac-12 Network executives that apparently helped the conference collect more money that was agreed upon in the contract with a media partner for years. What's an extra $50 million dollars between friends? Well Pac-12 schools are probably going to find out in the coming weeks. They guys also talk about some of the other Pac-12 news and notes as we enter the long and arduous offseason with Coach Prime making headlines by spilling the beans on what could have been a potential week zero Colorado vs. Arizona State battle, Utah getting a couple of their star players to return plus Dan Lanning gets a tattoo that there is no turning back from. Pac-12 finishes bowl season on a down note04 Jan 202301:20:37
In this episode of the Podcast of Champions hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio recapping the final five bowl games for the Conference of Champions including a pair of disappointing losses in New Year's Six bowls and a pair of late game collapses by the Los Angeles programs. Overall the Pac-12 went 3-4 in bowl games, an improvement over the 0-7 bowl record for the conference from the previous two seasons, but still a disappointing finish with USC losing to Tulane in the Cotton Bowl and Utah losing to Penn State in the Rose Bowl. There was some good news for the PAC with yet another 1-point bowl win for Oregon (third in a row), taking down North Carolina in the Holiday Bowl and Washington's victory over Texas in the Alamo Bowl. Beavers roll, Cougars crumble plus remaining Pac-12 bowl game previews20 Dec 202201:27:37
In this episode of the Podcast of Champion hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio recapping the first two Pac-12 bowl games with Oregon State absolutely crushing Florida in the Las Vegas Bowl and Washington State getting absolutely crushed by Fresno State in the Los Angeles Bowl. Newly extended head coach Jonathan Smith led the Beavers to an incredible 10-win season (including field goal losses to USC and Washington), setting OSU up for what should be another impressive season in 2023. Jake Dickert's Cougars have more work to do, replacing both coordinators plus several transfers and finding an offense that is capable of getting the ball down the field. The guys also preview the final five bowl games for the Conference of Champions including Utah's second-straight Rose Bowl and USC heading to Texas for the Cotton Bowl. Oregon got some good news this weekend when quarterback Bo Nix announced that he would be returning to the team in 2023. The Pac-12 quarterback situation is as bright as it has ever been with Nix, Michael Penix coming back at Washington and of course Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams at USC. The UC Regents approved UCLA's departure for the Big Ten but the Bruins will likely be paying the University of California at Berkeley several million dollars per year to help out the Golden Bears athletic department. Mike Leach tribute, Caleb Williams' Heisman, Stanford hires Troy Taylor & Pac-12 bowl previews13 Dec 202201:33:20
In this episode of the Podcast of Champion hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio talking about the Pac-12 landing a major award with USC quarterback Caleb Williams winning the Heisman Trophy, the first for the Conference of Champions since Marcus Mariota took home the hardware for Oregon in 2014. Williams nabbed 544 of the 929 first place votes and won all six regions while landing on 88.5% of the ballots (10th best all-time). Washington quarterback Michael Penix led the nation in passing yards and finished in the top-10 of the Heisman voting. Later this week Oregon State will take on Florida in the Las Vegas Bowl and Washington State will face off against Mountain West Champion Fresno State in the LA Bowl. Ryan and Dave preview both of these match-ups and give their picks against the spread. The guys also talk about some major coaching and player news throughout the Pac-12, starting with Stanford hiring Sacramento State head coach Troy Taylor to take over for David Shaw. They also discuss new Colorado head coach Deion Sanders filling out his staff and hitting the transfer portal and recruiting path with a purpose. Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham is also making some big hires including a couple from within the conference and a legendary Arizona high school coach. There has also been some major roster movement in the Pac-12 via the NCAA Transfer Portal including a team captain leaving Tempe for Michigan and stud linebacker departing Stanford for Salt Lake City. And sadly the guys talk about former Washington State head coach Mike Leach passing away at the age of 61. Ryan and Dave share some of their favorite stories about The Pirate whose wide open spread offenses changed college football as we know it today. In this episode of the Podcast of Champion hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio talking about the Utah Utes defeating the USC Trojans 47-24 in Las Vegas. The victory secured Kyle Whittingham's second-straight Pac-12 Championship and another Rose Bowl berth, this time against Penn State. Colorado was also making noise in the Pac-12 footprint by hiring Coach Prime to take over the struggling football program. Deion Sanders is leaving Jackson State to come to Boulder and there will likely be a lot of roster turnover before the start of the 2023 football season. Ryan and Dave talk about this monumental hire in the Conference of Champions and why they think this can work for the Buffs. Pac-12 Championship preview for the USC Trojans vs. the Utah Utes30 Nov 202201:11:00
In this episode of the Podcast of Champion hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back in studio previewing the Pac-12 Championship between the USC Trojans and the Utah Utes. These two squads faced off back on October 15 with Kyle Whittingham's Utes edging out Lincoln Riley's Trojans 43-42 on a two-point conversion with under a minute to play in the game. The guys talk about how they think this match-up will go and make their pick against the spread, currently listed as USC -3 over Utah. They also discuss the Pac-12 decision to eliminate divisions in an attempt to create a better matchup that in this case potentially took away the more compelling game. With the division format USC would have won the South and faced off against Washington who would have won the North. The Huskies not only have one more win than Utah but they also have one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the country, Indiana transfer Michael Penix. Emergency POC - Wild ending to the Pac-12 regular season plus David Shaw steps down28 Nov 202201:37:11
In this emergency episode of the Podcast of Champion hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods give their thoughts on the breaking news that Stanford head coach David Shaw announced he is stepping down from his position effective immediately. Saturday night the Cardinal fell to BYU at home 35-26 but Shaw said his decision was already made over the Thanksgiving weekend. Ryan and Dave talk about this major shakeup in the Pac-12 coaching ranks with the four-time Pac-12 coach of the year and winningest coach in Stanford history finally moving aside. They also discuss the other major head coaching news with Oregon offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham returning home to Tempe, taking over as head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils. Dillingham was officially announced as ASU's head man just hours after the Ducks lost a stunner in Corvallis that, along with Washington's win in the Apple Cup, knocked them out of a chance to play for the Pac-12 Championship. Oh, and there is also a ton of Pac-12 football the boys will recap including the Trojans putting a capper on an 11-1 season with a controlling win over Notre Dame, Utah scoring all the points against Colorado, Jedd Fisch getting some Territorial revenge and lots more! Podcast of Champion hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back together again in studio recapping two of the most important match-ups of the 2022 Pac-12 football season, UCLA hosting USC at the Rose Bowl and Oregon hosting Utah at Autzen Stadium. Both games came down to the wire, though one was far more entertaining than the other, and both results went a long way to determining who would play for the conference championship in Las Vegas on December 2. With the victories by USC and Oregon the Trojans are in and the Ducks control their own destiny, getting in as the home team with a win in the Civil War against Oregon State on Saturday. They also recap the other week 12 games in the conference including Washington steamrolling Colorado, Jayden del Laura imploding against his old WSU squad, Big Game 4th quarter drama and the Beavers cruising in the desert. Looking ahead to the final weekend of the regular season the guys preview two Friday night games with the public California schools facing off against each other along with the Territorial Cup in Tucson. They also preview the Saturday rivalry games in Oregon, Washington and Colorado along with Stanford vs. BYU and USC vs. Notre Dame. Pac-12 football chaotic week 11 recap and week 12 preview14 Nov 202201:51:38
Podcast of Champion hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back together again in studio recapping what they thought would be an all chalk Pac-12 football weekend with heavy home favorites cruising to victories. Turns out, week 11 was total chaos with Conference of Champions cannibalism going on, knocking out two of the three hopefuls for the Pac-12 to make the College Football Playoffs for the first time since 2016. Things got off to a rocky start Friday night with Colorado leading USC 3-2 after the first quarter. The Trojans righted the ship and blew out the Buffs as expected, but it set the table for a bad vibes Saturday for two of the other title contenders. Oregon had the marquee matchup with Washington, but the Ducks were still two touchdown favorites at home. The Huskies had other plans and pulled off the stunning upset thanks to another huge night from transfer quarterback Michael Penix. With Oregon losing, it opened up conference championship opportunities and eliminated some strange tiebreakers for the LA schools. In one of the Pac-12 After Dark games UCLA couldn't take advantage and fell to three touchdown underdog Arizona, putting their Pac-12 title on life support. Week 12 features another full slate of Pac-12 games with a virtual semifinal that has USC travelling to the Rose Bowl to take on UCLA and Utah heading to Eugene to take on Oregon. Pac-12 football week 10 recap and week 11 previews featuring Washington at Oregon10 Nov 202202:01:18
Podcast of Champion hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back together again in studio recapping what started off as a competitive Pac-12 football weekend with a compelling Friday night game between Washington and Oregon State but quickly turned into what was mostly blowout central on Saturday. After an impressive run picking against the spread last weekend Ryan and Dave struggled in their predictions for week ten. Week eleven is another full slate of Pac-12 games kicking off on Friday again with USC and Colorado followed by some potential clunkers on Saturday outside of the main event, Oregon hosting Washington in one of the best rivalries in the conference. Halloween POC - Pac-12 football week nine recap and week ten preview31 Oct 202201:33:19
Podcast of Champion hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back together again in studio recapping another exciting weekend of Pac-12 football that featured five games, four with double-digit spreads and four road favorites notching victories. The action got started on Thursday night with a hobbled Utah squad that took down Washington State in Pullman despite the biggest surprise of the weekend, star quarterback Cam Rising who was a game time scratch. On Saturday the Ducks continued their winning ways with an 18-point road win over Cal in which Bo Nix accounted for six touchdowns including three on the ground. USC was also banged up heading into the desert without top starters on both sides of the ball, but was still able to hold on for an 8-point win over Arizona. In the interim head coaching bowl Arizona State outlasted Colorado in Bounder and UCLA decimated Stanford at the Rose Bowl. The guys also discuss the Big 12's new media rights deal and what they think it means for the Pac-12 and Stanford stamping out fun by banning the Tree mascot for the rest of the season. Plus with Oregon, Utah, USC and UCLA 15-0 against the rest of the conference, which program has the best shot to knock off any of the top-4? And congrats to Oregon State who entered the AP top-25 despite being on a bye week! Looking ahead to week ten all 12 teams are in action featuring Oregon State at Washington on Friday night. Pac-12 football week eight recap and week nine preview27 Oct 202201:53:24
Podcast of Champion hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back together again in studio recapping another exciting weekend of Pac-12 football that once again showed how important home field advantage is in the conference. Week eight had only four contests and three of the four home teams notched victories with the lone road team (Washington) failing to cover the 7.5 point spread at Cal. The marquee match-up was of course the Bruins on the road at Oregon leaving the Ducks as the lone Pac-12 team left undefeated in conference play. There are some wild scenarios for which two teams make the conference title game in this first season with no divisions with UCLA, Oregon, USC and Utah as the main teams in contention to make it to Las Vegas. The guys also discuss what Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkiff had to say at basketball media day including comments about his letter to the UC Board of Regents that asked the board to block the Bruins from leaving the conference. He also doubled-down on his statement that UCLA would be worse off financially leaving for the Big Ten than it would be staying in the Pac-12. Looking ahead to week nine we get things started with a tough road test for Utah heading to Pullman to play Washington State on Thursday night followed by what mostly look like lopsided contests on Saturday outside of the interim coach bowl with Arizona State at Colorado. Pac-12 football week seven recap and week eight preview17 Oct 202201:34:48
Podcast of Champion hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back together again in studio recapping another exciting and bizarre weekend of Pac-12 football. Week seven was about as upside down as you could have imagined with the two bottom dwellers of our POC Power Rankings securing victories. It was once again a great week for home teams with all four Pac-12 match-ups going to the home squad. It was also another good week if you were an interim head coach as Colorado's Mike Sanford got an emotional victory over California in his first game running the Buffs. And even the team that should have an interim head coach got a win with Stanford shocking Notre Dame on the road, scoring only one touchdown but still getting its first victory over an FBS opponent since early last year. The guys also take a look at the marquee game in the Pac-12 with Utah edging out an exciting one-point win over USC in Rice-Eccles Stadium. Looking ahead to week eight there are just four games in the conference with the big one being UCLA heading to Oregon with College Game Day making a West Coast appearance for the first time this season. Pac-12 football week six recap and week seven preview10 Oct 202201:37:01
Podcast of Champion hosts Ryan Abraham and David Woods are back together again in studio for a special early week edition of the show where they break down all of the Pac-12 football action from week 6 and preview what is to come in week 7. The LA schools are on their way out in 2024 but they are apparently trying to exit in style with both USC and UCLA sitting at 6-0 for the first time since 2005. The Oregon Ducks have bounced back from their 46-point beatdown at the hands of Georgia and look like legit conference title contenders and ASU interim head coach Shaun Aguano got his emotional first win. As cool as it was for the Sun Devils to get an upset win over nationally ranked Washington just a couple weeks after Herm Edwards was fired, that result pales in comparison to what went down on the Farm in #Pac12AfterDark. The Oregon State Beavers scored three touchdowns in the final quarter including the game winner with 13 seconds left on their way to toppling Stanford 28-27. The Cardinal could taste the end of their 10-game losing streak to FBS programs, at least until they couldn't.
