Ep.209 Are native plants best for urban ecology? - Daniel Fuller
01 Sep 2024
00:10:41
Are native and endemic plants better than exotic plants for biodiversity in urban landscapes? The answer is, it depends.
By now, you expect a nuanced exploration into complex ideas like this when you tune into the Plants Grow Here podcast. As a qualified horticulturist with well over a decade in landscape maintenance and horticulture, it bothers me when I see overly simplistic statements like, "native plants are good and exotics are bad."
What does "native" even mean in a country as large as Australia? Are urban conditions the same as they were before colonialism? And why do pollinators flock to exotic plants like lavender and duranta if they're so bad for ecology?
These are the types of questions we explore in this episode.

Ep.122 Turning pest fish into fertiliser - Ron Kaponica (Sponsored by Charlie Carp)
18 Sep 2022

Australian estuaries have a problem. Well, they have several, but one of the major threats to the ecosystem is undoubtedly the European carp which outcompete our native fauna, overgraze on flora and cause further destruction.
This episode's sponsor is Charlie Carp, a fish fertiliser company that's helping to keep populations down, even though my guest Ron Kaponica points out we'll never be able to get rid of them permanently (much like rabbits).
In this episode, you'll learn about the problem of pest carp in Australia, and how Charlie Carp decimate populations and turn them into a good, old-fashioned organic fertiliser, as well as a non-organic option for those of us that want to super-charge our veggies or ornamental plants.

Have you ever looked at your pruning and wondered, "did I do that right?"
If you're uncertain of your pruning skills, you're probably getting it wrong, which causes damage to your precious trees and causes unsightly epicormic growth.
Luckily, Gary Moran is back! And in this episode, he's going to teach us how to prune trees correctly. Much of what he has to say applies to pruning all plants, and some aspects are specific to trees.

Ep.196 Permaculture syntropics - Erik van Zuilekom (United Natures)
17 Mar 2024
02:22:18
A garden is never finished. It's going to change throughout the year, and the seasons. It should be getting better over time instead of worse.
And it should also provide you with multiple yields, whether that's a food crop, supporting biodiversity, reducing soil salinity, providing shade, making the space appear larger, or simply bringing you joy.
It's easy to roll your eyes when you hear terms like "sustainability" or "nature-based solutions". They've become cliches used by companies to greenwash, and individuals to virtue signal. But these ideas have real value when you look beyond the greenwashing.
Erik van Zuilekom is a plant scientist, permaculturist, landscape designer, and plant selection specialist who has come on the show to help us think deeply about landscape design, construction, and maintenance from a permaculture syntropics perspective.
We go beyond the typical surface-level discussion and go deep into topics like growing soil, tissue culture vs seed-propagated plants, green walls, terraforming, irrigation, and much, much more.

Ep.89 Raising rarity: Cultivating at-risk native plants with the RBGV - Dr Megan Hirst & Matthew Henderson (sponsored by Hort Journal Australia)
20 Feb 2022
00:43:31
We have some stunning native flora in Victoria, as well as around the rest of Australia, and many of the most beautiful plants you can imagine are at-risk or endangered. What if we brought some of those plants into cultivation in order to preserve them?
Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria (RBGV) is doing just that with their Raising Rarity program, and in this episode, Karen Smith, editor for our sponsor Hort Journal Australia, interviews 2 gardeners from the Botanic Gardens, Dr Megan Hirst and Matthew Henderson, about this fantastic initiative.
Meg and Matt wrote an article for the Journal, along with a previous guest Russel Larke, called "Raising Rarity: A community approach to plant conservation", which is linked below.
