Ep.209 Are native plants best for urban ecology? - Daniel Fuller
Épisode 209
dimanche 1 septembre 2024 • Durée 10:41
Are native and endemic plants better than exotic plants for biodiversity in urban landscapes? The answer is, it depends.
By now, you expect a nuanced exploration into complex ideas like this when you tune into the Plants Grow Here podcast. As a qualified horticulturist with well over a decade in landscape maintenance and horticulture, it bothers me when I see overly simplistic statements like, "native plants are good and exotics are bad."
What does "native" even mean in a country as large as Australia? Are urban conditions the same as they were before colonialism? And why do pollinators flock to exotic plants like lavender and duranta if they're so bad for ecology?
These are the types of questions we explore in this episode.

Ep.123 Intro to sales & selling - Zak Iqbal (hort industry salesperson)
Épisode 123
dimanche 25 septembre 2022 • Durée 47:00
Sales is a massive career opportunity within the horticulture industry, especially for people that need to get off the tools for whatever reason. It's not for everybody, but the right person can make a nice income when you factor in a base wage plus commissions.
And sales skills aren't just for professional salespeople either! They're an incredibly valuable addition to any professional landscaper, horticulturist or business owner in the space that wants to be more convincing so that you can have things go your way more often.

Ep.122 Turning pest fish into fertiliser - Ron Kaponica (Sponsored by Charlie Carp)
Épisode 122
dimanche 18 septembre 2022 • Durée 26:25
Australian estuaries have a problem. Well, they have several, but one of the major threats to the ecosystem is undoubtedly the European carp which outcompete our native fauna, overgraze on flora and cause further destruction.
This episode's sponsor is Charlie Carp, a fish fertiliser company that's helping to keep populations down, even though my guest Ron Kaponica points out we'll never be able to get rid of them permanently (much like rabbits).
In this episode, you'll learn about the problem of pest carp in Australia, and how Charlie Carp decimate populations and turn them into a good, old-fashioned organic fertiliser, as well as a non-organic option for those of us that want to super-charge our veggies or ornamental plants.

Épisode 121
dimanche 11 septembre 2022 • Durée 01:02:58
In this episode, Ian Allen from the Blue Mountains Botanic Gardens at Mount Tomah, NSW, comes on the show to speak about the important work he and his team are doing in the UNESCO World Heritage listed ecosystem.
The star of this episode, of course, is the critically endangered Wollemi pine, an ancient lineage of plants that are unlike anything else that can be found in the Blue Mountains (or, indeed, the world).
