In our conversation, Thomas lays out why Southern Europe – especially countries like Spain, Italy, and Greece – is currently one of the most interesting regions for microcap investing. He explains the value of bottom-up research, the importance of direct interaction with management teams, how non-European investors can begin navigating this often-overlooked space, as well as some of the structural risks that exist in this space – including governance concerns and delisting threats.

Origin Agritech (NASDAQ: SEED): GMO Corn Seeds in China16 Jun 202300:52:04

My guest on the show today is Joe Ramelli, Vice President of Business Development for Origin Agritech (NASDAQ: SEED). Origin Agritech Limited, founded in 1997 and headquartered in Zhong-Guan-Cun (ZGC) Life Science Park in Beijing, is a Chinese agricultural technology company. In crop seed biotechnologies, Origin Agritech's phytase corn was the first transgenic corn to receive the Bio-Safety Certificate from China's Ministry of Agriculture, according to the company's website.

Three things to get you ready for this interview:

1. I've been wanting to have a US-listed Chinese company on the podcast. US-listed Chinese companies have had a negative perception for a while now in general, and especially amongst US MicroCap investors. Out of curiosity, I wanted to chat with a US-listed Chinese company to better understand how they feel about this and approach investors with a certain narrative, without knowing anything specific about their company.

2. I wanted to interview a US-listed Chinese company that I know has been around for a while, and has some following from other US-based investors I respect (for compliance purposes, this is not an endorsement of the company itself). Origin Agritech has had a long, volatile history since going public in 2006 and have been making headlines recently after receiving GMO approval in China for their corn seed.

3. If you've been listening to this series for a while, you know, I usually only interview C-suite for this podcast. However, in Origin Agritech's case and most other US-listed Chinese companies, English is management's second language. Also, I've known Joe for a long time as an investor, he's been an investor in Origin Agritech since 2008, and has recently been brought on as VP Business Development for the company.

The Company has acquired a 52-acre site with a 135,000 sq.foot manufacturing building in NY State for its planned Gigafactory, in addition to its two operating locations in Canada.   Electrovaya has been in the battery space for over two decades and has had many "lives" and Raj explains. In 2009, when Raj joined the company, it was in the automotive space and that was their main focus as a battery supplier. What's fascinating about Electrovaya's story to me is how they had make the difficult choice to pivot their business strategy, which we discuss at length, as well as:
  • Why the company pivoted away from delivering batteries for the automotive industry to focusing specifically on the material handling vehicles space
  • How Electrovaya has performed since the 2018 pivot

Greystone Logistics, Inc. is focused on the fast-growing plastic segment of the $9.5 billion pallet industry, with its manufacturing facility located in Bettendorf, IA and its Executive offices located in Tulsa, OK.

For those wondering what a pallet is, those are the flat wooden structures that heavy goods are put so that they can be moved using a fork-lift truck. One of the key differentiators is that they manufacture recycled plastic pallets vs. those traditional wooden pallets that you've for sure seen at your local Costco.

While some folks might see the pallet industry as a sexy business, most folks in our investing world would lovingly refer to Greystone as a classic boring company. Some of my favorite interviews are with classic boring companies because I get to learn more about a topic that I never thought I would. As the title states, Acuitas is the largest allocator to MicroCap managers in the world - their Microcap strategy pursues its investment objective using a multi-manager process by allocating assets among one or more high confidence managers that invest in inefficient segments of the equity markets. I wanted to learn more about their MicroCap fund of funds strategy and their experience working with MicroCap managers.

I've had a number of conversations with MicroCap fund managers in recent months, and in addition to the rough performance amongst MicroCap stocks, redemptions and lack of in-flows have also been a cause for concern. And what's worse, everyone and their grandparents agree, almost every quality MicroCap (and small cap) have taken haircuts across the board - now is one of the best times to dive deep on names trading at much cheaper prices. Managers need new in-flows in order to participate. This is where allocators like Acuitas enter the conversation.

My guests on the show today are Josh Womack and Tom Carey from Womack Capital Partners. This episode is especially timely with our conference coming up in Las Vegas because, as we covered here many times before, when you invest in a MicroCap stocks, you're primarily making a bet on the jockey aka management. That means part of your due diligence process, in my opinion, should be listening to conference calls, interviews, presentations management has done, as well as meet with management in a 1x1 meeting and asking as many questions as you have. We've done many episodes discussing the do's and don'ts of speaking with management, but surprisingly, we'd never done anything about how we should think about the information conveyed. That's where Josh and Tom enter the conversation, both of whom have an immense amount of experience meeting with management. Tom's background, in particular, I think differentiates their research process - his transition from doing investor relations full-time to being on the buy-side I think offers unique insight from someone who's been in the room with management teams discussing how they want to speak with shareholders.

Last time I had Yaron on the show, it was in July 2022 chatting about the First Half 2022 MicroCap bloodbath, which of course we all know, got worse (Planet MicroCap Index was down ~40% for the year). Sentiment was extremely high, gold crossed the $1,800/oz threshold and every newsletter writer and gold bug espoused that $5,000/oz was not out of the question by the end of 2012. Sounds eerily familiar, eh? In any case, resources markets have had a rocky 10+ years - some ups and downs mostly driven by hype, i.e., materials needed for EV markets, ESG issues in mining, etc... And, here we are in 2023, and the price of gold has stayed above $1,800/oz to start the year. Brent is a frequent guest that I turn to when I have questions about the mining industry, especially right now, where there seems to be some real tailwinds lifting the industry right now (which we discuss in our chat). I met him recently when he participated in the Stock Pitch World Cup on Team Europe. Also a US-resident, he was on Team Europe because he was pitching a video game development company based in Europe. I started thinking about my own experience with video games, and it took me a minute because my heyday was playing FIFA and Madden on Playstation 2. Safe to say, the gaming industry has grown A LOT since then.

I've also interviewed a number of MicroCap companies that would describe themselves as gaming or gaming-adjacent, and while it doesn't take a rocket scientist to recognize the explosion of video games, some of the newer entrants and business models haven't quite made a whole lot of sense to me. So, I brought on Hermann, who has 20+ years experience working and investing in the gaming industry, to cure me of my old man syndrome, and hopefully help all of us better understand how to think about investing in this space.

It's been a bloodbath for biotech in the last two years - according to the S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index, the sector has been down ~45-50%. At the same time, in 2023, also according to the S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index, the sector is up about 4-5% already on the year (as of January 20, 2023). Whether this is a sign that things are looking up for biotech is still too early to tell, but I felt its worth discussing why its been hard times in biotech in 2021 and 2022. Eden and I also discuss what he's looking for amongst the biotech rubble, in particular, why it's so important to pay attention to how Phase 2b clinical trials are constructed. We close out with his biotech predications for 2023.

Amerigo Resources (TSX: ARG) (OTCQX: ARREF): Copper Producer without a Copper Mine19 Jan 202300:40:29

My guest on the show today is Aurora Davidson, President and CEO of Amerigo Resources Ltd. (TSX: ARG) / (OTCQX: ARREF). Amerigo is an innovative copper producer with a long-term relationship with Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile (“Codelco”), the world’s largest copper producer. Amerigo produces copper concentrate and molybdenum concentrate as a by-product at the MVC operation in Chile by processing fresh and historic tailings from Codelco’s El Teniente mine, the world's largest underground copper mine.

Despite the copper price being down from it's all-time high in late February 2022, copper has been back to 2011 levels and consistently been above $4 since 2021. In a Reuters column published on January 17, titled, "Funds jump back into copper, betting on Chinese recovery", writer Andy Home states, "Investors played copper from the short side for much of last year, if they were prepared to engage at all. Rolling lockdowns in China, an energy crisis in Europe and aggressive rate hikes in the United States were all good reasons to give Doctor Copper a wide berth. The funds' sudden return is a sign that many are betting on a much sunnier outlook."   Amerigo also just announced on January 17, 2023 their 2022 production results that came in above guidance, as well as provided their guidance for 2023. We jam on a few topics here today: what worked for him in 2022, specifically: businesses doing accretive M&A (which we get into more) and activist involvement, what didn't work, managing mental and emotional side of investing, especially in a year like 2022, capital raising in this environment and positioning himself heading into 2023. Speaking to the headline of today's show, we also discuss why his investment in Polished.com has, "been one of the more frustrating investments I've ever made", and the idea of frustrating investments in general.

As of Sunday, January 8, 2023, China has re-opened its doors to travellers. In the previous few months, while the rest of the world has gone back to pre-pandemic guidelines and everything has opened up, China had remained on very strict lockdowns, and from a international business perspective, folks were wondering what are we supposed to do about this - will China ever re-open? If so, what will the new restrictions be?

Also, how do we think about China within the international business community when you compound lockdowns with their association with allegations of supporting Putin in the Ukraine War and the crackdown on Chinese tech companies.

Nevertheless, China has re-opened, and I wanted to put this news into context as some institutions start to look at investing overseas to park capital if the U.S. is to go into a recession. To help me answer all these questions, I invited on Michael Fritzell, Editor of Asian Century Stocks. Michael is Swedish citizen who has been living in Asia since 2009, currently resides in Singapore, and has been investing in Asian stocks since 2008.

In our discussion today, we discuss the China re-opening, consumer trends we should be looking in China with the re-opening, non-Chinese companies that sell product to China consumer base, investing in non-China-based Asian companies, and what this all means for MicroCaps in general.

The idea, or the ability, to conceptualize the future for any given company is a skill I think we all wish we had mastered (then we'd all be extremely wealthy), and yet, is what makes investing in Small, MicroCaps so damn fun. Deiya and his team at Pernas Research focus heavily on companies where their future is brighter than their current state, in other words, how the conceptualization of their futures are different from market perception. We dig into this idea today, and provide a few examples to illustrate what Deiya means.
