Europe’s Hidden Gems: MicroCap Investing with Thomas Richard, CFA, Portfolio Manager at Philippe Hottinguer Gestion

Épisode 452

mercredi 28 mai 2025Durée 49:32

My guest on the show today is Thomas Richard, CFA, Portfolio Manager at Philippe Hottinguer Gestion, based in Paris. Thomas has been diving deep into European microcaps – a market segment he describes as “so unloved and uncovered,” with unique inefficiencies and opportunities.

In our conversation, Thomas lays out why Southern Europe – especially countries like Spain, Italy, and Greece – is currently one of the most interesting regions for microcap investing. He explains the value of bottom-up research, the importance of direct interaction with management teams, how non-European investors can begin navigating this often-overlooked space, as well as some of the structural risks that exist in this space – including governance concerns and delisting threats.

We also touch on specific names like Euroconsultants, Shelly Group, Reway, and ALA, and for full disclosure, I am not a shareholder in any of them.

Épisode 442

mardi 21 janvier 2025Durée 56:53

My guest on the show today is Whit Huguley, Fund Manager at River Oaks Capital. I've known Whit for a few years now, first having met him at one of my own conferences in Vegas, and have gotten to know and appreciate Whit's investing style. He launched his Fund, River Oaks Capital, about 5 years ago now, and while he's in the middle of writing his annual letter, he graciously jumped on the pod to talk more about what he's learned from running a MicroCap fund thus far. And for full disclosure, we discussed a number of companies during today's podcast, I am not a shareholder in any of them.   For more information about River Oaks Capital, please visit: https://www.riveroaks-capital.com/  You can Follow Whit Huguley on Twitter/X: https://x.com/Whit_Huguley

Origin Agritech (NASDAQ: SEED): GMO Corn Seeds in China

Épisode 352

vendredi 16 juin 2023Durée 52:04

My guest on the show today is Joe Ramelli, Vice President of Business Development for Origin Agritech (NASDAQ: SEED). Origin Agritech Limited, founded in 1997 and headquartered in Zhong-Guan-Cun (ZGC) Life Science Park in Beijing, is a Chinese agricultural technology company. In crop seed biotechnologies, Origin Agritech's phytase corn was the first transgenic corn to receive the Bio-Safety Certificate from China's Ministry of Agriculture, according to the company's website.

Three things to get you ready for this interview:

1. I've been wanting to have a US-listed Chinese company on the podcast. US-listed Chinese companies have had a negative perception for a while now in general, and especially amongst US MicroCap investors. Out of curiosity, I wanted to chat with a US-listed Chinese company to better understand how they feel about this and approach investors with a certain narrative, without knowing anything specific about their company.

2. I wanted to interview a US-listed Chinese company that I know has been around for a while, and has some following from other US-based investors I respect (for compliance purposes, this is not an endorsement of the company itself). Origin Agritech has had a long, volatile history since going public in 2006 and have been making headlines recently after receiving GMO approval in China for their corn seed.

3. If you've been listening to this series for a while, you know, I usually only interview C-suite for this podcast. However, in Origin Agritech's case and most other US-listed Chinese companies, English is management's second language. Also, I've known Joe for a long time as an investor, he's been an investor in Origin Agritech since 2008, and has recently been brought on as VP Business Development for the company.

There's a lot to unpack with Origin Agritech, and in this interview, we cover all of these topics and more. With that, please enjoy my conversation with Joe Ramelli, Vice President of Business Development for Origin Agritech (NASDAQ: SEED). For more information about Origin Agritech, please visit: https://originagritech.com/

Épisode 351

mardi 13 juin 2023Durée 19:06

I promise you what you are about to hear is not just Paul and I talking about my next event, the Planet MicroCap Showcase: VANCOUVER - taking place September 6-7, 2023. But since you mention it, we are really excited to introduce and welcome you all to my next event on the MicroCap investor conference calendar, the Planet MicroCap Showcase: VANCOUVER - taking place September 6-7, 2023 at the Fairmont Waterfront.

Paul Andreola and his team at Smallcap Discoveries are lead sponsors for this event, and will be my personal escort through all of Vancouver. All jokes aside, we wanted to take 20 minutes of your time here today to discuss why we embarked on our first event outside of Las Vegas, why Vancouver, and how we feel this event will fill a void for Canada, which, in my opinion, has one of the best MicroCap investing ecosystems in the world.

We already have some really, and I mean really high quality speakers and companies lined-up to participate, and now is your chance to join us as well. To register and attend, please visit PlanetMicroCapShowcase.com to learn more, and be updated on who will be joining us.

Like I said, Paul and I aren't just here to promote Vancouver, I also get his thoughts on the first half of 2023 for MicroCaps, Canadian companies in particular, and what he's seeing for the rest of the year. I've had Paul on the show many times, and he is one of the best MicroCap investors in the game, so I'm honored whenever I get a chance to speak with him, let alone garnering his support for our first venture outside Vegas. omniQ Corp. (NASDAQ: OMQS): Creates Automation through Object Identification

Épisode 350

vendredi 9 juin 2023Durée 44:20

My guest on the show today is Shai Lustgarten, CEO of omniQ Corp. (NASDAQ: OMQS). omniQ provides computerized and machine vision image processing solutions that use patented and proprietary AI technology to deliver data collection, real-time surveillance and monitoring for supply chain management, homeland security, public safety, traffic & parking management, and access control applications. The company's customers range across four key verticals: Supply Chain, Traffic Management, Public Safety/Safe Cities, and Retail/Restaurants.

As it states in the title and Shai's answer to my first question, the company creates automation through object identification. Yes, it sounds like tech jargon, however, I started to better understand what omniQ is attempting to achieve when you better understand the verticals they are serving, which we cover at length in our conversation, as well as:

  • What differentiates omniQ's technology from their peers
  • Working with their client base to solve huge problems like homeland security and supply chain management
  • Path to profitability, and;
  • Where Shai would like to see the company in 3-5 years

With that, please enjoy my conversation with hai Lustgarten, CEO of omniQ Corp. For more information about omniQ, please visit: https://omniq.com/

My guest on the show today is Jay Grdina, President, CEO, Chairman of Adamas One Corp. The company, according to their website, is the originator of the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process for diamond and a direct company lineage back to Apollo Diamond, as well as claim that their Lab-Grown Diamonds are identical to the best mined diamonds - optically, physically and chemically.    Adamas One had recently participated in our conference, the Planet MicroCap Showcase, and following some conversations I had with folks that met with Jay in a 1x1 meeting and post-presentation, I wanted to better understand how Adamas One differentiates themselves from their peers, as well as:

Why the NEXT Economy is More than ESG and Impact Investing with Garvin Jabusch, Co-Founder and Chief Investment Officer for Green Alpha Advisors

Épisode 347

mardi 23 mai 2023Durée 53:40

My guest on the show today is Garvin Jabusch, Co-Founder and Chief Investment Officer for Green Alpha Advisors. I had last spoken Garvin in April 2020 discussing his investing philosophy then a follow up panel in August 2020 about why ESG and impact investing are taking center stage. It's been three years. Suffice it to say, A LOT has changed since then, across the board, as well as the conversation around ESG. You might be hearing this and thinking that you're about to listen to a full-on ESG podcast. Sure, we discuss the changing discourse around ESG/impact investing, but what I found most fascinating is our discussion around the intersectionality of trends and sectors, which is starting to take center stage in sustainability investing.

Electrovaya Inc. (TSX: EFL) (OTCQB: EFLVF): Lithium-ion Battery Technology and Manufacturer for Material Handling Electric Vehicles

Épisode 346

vendredi 19 mai 2023Durée 36:39

My guest on the show today is Dr. Raj DasGupta, CEO of Electrovaya Inc. (TSX: EFL) (OTCQB: EFLVF). Electrovaya is a technology-focused company with extensive IP, designs, develops, and manufactures proprietary lithium-ion batteries, battery systems, and battery-related products for energy storage, clean electric transportation, and other specialized applications. The Company has acquired a 52-acre site with a 135,000 sq.foot manufacturing building in NY State for its planned Gigafactory, in addition to its two operating locations in Canada.   Electrovaya has been in the battery space for over two decades and has had many "lives" and Raj explains. In 2009, when Raj joined the company, it was in the automotive space and that was their main focus as a battery supplier. What's fascinating about Electrovaya's story to me is how they had make the difficult choice to pivot their business strategy, which we discuss at length, as well as:
  • Why the company pivoted away from delivering batteries for the automotive industry to focusing specifically on the material handling vehicles space
  • How Electrovaya has performed since the 2018 pivot
  • Where he would like to see the company in 3-5 years

With that, please enjoy my conversation with Dr. Raj DasGupta, CEO of Electrovaya Inc. For more information about Electrovaya, please visit: www.electrovaya.com
