19. Keep Kids Muddy with Jess Labbe at the Village Nest Cooperative Nature School16 May 202300:45:56

This entire month we talking about Teaching and Learning Outdoors. In this episode, we are talking with Jessica Labbe from the Village Nest Cooperative Nature School.

HERE'S WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THIS EPISODE:

  • The history of The Village Nest Cooperative.
  • KEEP KIDS MUDDY "motto."
  • The Village Nest Cooperative Nature School Forest School Model
  • How they manage preschoolers napping outdoors.
  • How they are more than child care ...and that you are more like a VILLAGE.
  • The evolution of their programs and the different types of programming offerings.
  • The Curriculum at Village Nest Cooperative Nature School.
  • What the children learn at Village Nest Cooperative Nature School
  • How they handle bad weather.

MEET JESSICA:

Jessica Labbe is a Forest Preschool Educator/Ambassador committed to environmental education and improving early childhood development through nature-based exploration. She holds a BA in Early Child Education and worked with preschool-aged children in the outdoors for 15 + years before opening the Village Nest in 2020. She has been asked to teach at several conferences, particularly in the field of literacy and taking toddlers outdoors.

Jessica has a passion for inspiring imaginative play and often telling stories about unicorns and mermaids. She also believes wholeheartedly that nature-play is the most all-inclusive way to educate children.

During her time off you can find her on nature walks with her dog Kota, kayaking, enjoying the beach, camping, or somewhere in her garden. She also enjoys reading and is committed to lifelong learning.

THE VILLAGE NEST COOPERATIVE NATURE SCHOOL:

The Village Nest grew out of an immediate need and desire to keep our forest school, formerly at the Kittery Community Center, open during the COVID-19 Epidemic. No one could have imagined the magic that would unfold after that immediate need. When the Global Pandemic closed the program, Jess knew she needed to do something to help families in the community and she acted. Within just three months, she was able to open Maine's first fully-outdoor Preschool program.

At our new nest, our families and team are committed to supporting our children to socialize and grow to their potential in the best learning environment possible: the forest. This also happens to be a safer environment to play and teach during COVID. Children laugh, play, and thrive in their outdoor environment with opportunities to be fully immersed in nature-play.

When asked why Forest Play, the answer is simple: "I was sick of having children kicked out of my indoor classroom due to neurodivergence and development that were beyond the control of the child or their parents. Outdoors, children have less unnatural stimuli and are able to grow according to their own needs. We are able to focus on self-regulation and teaching emotional intelligence so that children can thrive rather than be expected to do things that their bodies are simply not developed enough or ready for!" Outdoor education needs to be accessible to all!

Children do everything they would do inside, but we do it outside without the walls. We have a seasonal "reverse" or "emergent" curriculum where children get to decide what they want to learn about and educators facilitate and support that learning by matching the standards to the lessons that are already organically happening. We even nap outdoors under the tree canopy.

Our mission is a very simple one: KEEP KIDS MUDDY! We want to keep childhood in Early Childhood Education and allow children to do their work... PLAY!

15. Rooted in Imagination with Clare Nugent from The Ferntop Nature Preschool02 May 202300:50:21

This entire month we talking about Teaching and Learning Outdoors.

HERE'S WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THIS EPISODE:

In this episode, we are talking with Clare Nugent, founder, and owner of Ferntop Nature Preschool in Tennessee. The focus of this important conversation centers around...

  • The Ferntop School Story
  • The integration of How Empathy, Wonder, Community, and Play
  • Elements & activities that inspire wonder & curiosity.

  • What's blooming at Ferntop Nature School and how they weave outdoor elements into their outdoor curriculum & programming.
  • The use of fire.
  • How Ferntop incorporates music into everyday outdoor learning.
  • A Day at Ferntop for Educators.

MEET CLARE NUGENT:

My earliest memory of nature is gardening with my grandmother. As a child, this garden seemed massive, with many paths and places to ramble. In reality, it was a 10 x 5 rectangle with a central path down the middle. Regardless, it was a magical space that forged relationships with nature that have lasted a lifetime.

Home-educating my own children provided hours of outdoor exploration, and it was during this time that I realized the power of nature in a child’s life to inspire their play and imagination. I began developing programming for groups, schools, and museums that combined music, movement, stories, and learning that revolved around the natural world and the seasons. I was trained in New York with Musikgarten, a rich music and movement curriculum that uses elements of nature in its music, and began my education in child development and early childhood education.

FERNTOP NATURE SCHOOL:

Widowed in 2010, I moved my family back to Tennessee, where I was born and raised, and opened up the first licensed nature preschool in the Southeast. I bought a farm and turned the barn into a school. I took classes to become a Tennessee naturalist so I could better understand the flora and fauna of my area. The areas around the farm became our classroom. At that time, the field of nature/forest education in America was in its infancy, so I traveled to Scotland and England, where outdoor schools are common and thriving, for intensive study in outdoor education. I began training and speaking at conferences around the Southeast about nature education, and the possibilities it holds for children and families. Ferntop Nature School is currently in its 9th year of operation and provides programming to children ages 3-10 years, and hosts events/training for educators, parents, therapists, and anyone seeking to understand deeper how to learn WITH nature, not just IN nature.

Alyssa Marsh is an entrepreneur, mom, outdoor enthusiast, and passionate consumer educator in the outdoor apparel world. Spending the majority of her career in fashion wholesale merchandising and marketing, she had a lightbulb moment when she realized how difficult it was to find the appropriate gear for her son at forest school in Minnesota. She spent long hours combing the web for not only the right gear, but for guidance on what type of gear worked best for outdoor schools. She and some other players in the children's apparel world saw this as a need that they could address. The solution was a dedicated {online} source of outdoor clothing for children enrolled at outdoor schools. And so, Outdoor School Shop was born and launched in 2021.

THE OUTDOOR SCHOOL SHOP

Outdoor School Shop’s goal is to make it easier for parents and teachers by curating a selection of outdoor gear’s that suitable for all kids regardless of the type of outdoor program they attend. In essence, it’s a one-stop-shop for outerwear that would live up to the heavy demands of outdoor schools. But they didn’t stop there. Outdoor School Shop also provides valuable content about the benefits of outdoor education and how to make the most of it for your family. They have comprehensive checklists of exactly what your kiddos will need for outdoor school, based on your location. Outdoor School Shop is also the proud owner of the most comprehensive directory of outdoor-oriented schools and programs in North America. 107: Outdoor Classroom CIRCLE Book Club: #2 Balanced and Barefoot by Angela Hanscom11 Jun 202400:10:54

Have you heard? I have just announced our second Outdoor Classroom’s CIRCLE Book Club selection! It's Balanced and Barefoot: How Unrestricted Outdoor Play Makes for Strong, Confident, and Capable Children  by Angela Hanscom.

Book description:

Today's kids have adopted sedentary lifestyles filled with television, video games, and computer screens. But more and more, studies show that children need "rough and tumble" outdoor play in order to develop their sensory, motor, and executive functions. Disturbingly, a lack of movement has been shown to lead to a number of health and cognitive difficulties, such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), emotion regulation and sensory processing issues, and aggressiveness at school recess break. So, how can you ensure your child is fully engaging their body, mind, and all of their senses?

Using the same philosophy that lies at the heart of her popular TimberNook program - that nature is the ultimate sensory experience, and that psychological and physical health improves for children when they spend time outside on a regular basis - author Angela J. Hanscom offers several strategies to help your child thrive, even if you live in an urban environment.

With this book, you'll discover little things you can do anytime, anywhere to help your kids achieve the movement they need to be happy and healthy in mind, body, and spirit.

Come join us in our CIRCLE Community Roundtable for a lively discussion about this book. In this episode, get a sneak peek of many book reflections from our members.

103: The Future of Outdoor Learning: Adapting to Change30 Apr 202400:11:49

There has to be a good reason for the change because it is difficult. Usually, change is reactive.

A scarcity attitude is one of the main obstacles I hear from educators who are reluctant to switch to an outdoor teaching paradigm.

  • Not Enough Time
  • Why does it lack?
  • The response from the students
  • The anticipation of out-of-control behavior
  • Absence of relevance to the curriculum

During a strategy session for an Outdoor Classroom, I asked a group of educators, "What is changing in your environment?" and their responses were insightful:

"The mental health of our students is evolving. Youngsters worry about the world we are leaving behind. There is an increase in our students who are experiencing depression, obesity, and attention deficit disorder."

Hearing directly from the front-line educators was incredibly insightful and true. In this episode, we recognize these shifts, marking the first step in the Outdoor Classrooms Readiness for Change Model.

101: Therapeutic Forest School: Perspectives on Nature-Based Wellness with Tamara Wineland from AdventureME & Trek Outdoors23 Apr 202400:40:48

This episode is an Outdoor Classrooms Tour and Talk with Tamara Wineland from AdventureME and Trek Outdoors. A licensed micro-forest and nature school serving children ages 3-5 in Black Forest, CO. Their approach is not an unsupervised free-for-all, but a behind-the-scenes facilitation of exploration and learning. They use a blended pedagogy that allows children to form their own understanding of their world and their place in it with a focus on healthy and authentic development which builds self-confidence and teaches them to be respectful of themselves and others. In this episode learn why they are really proud to be a part of the Black Forest and how they take every advantage to develop socially, emotionally, and academically within this community. So while they have 10 acres to play on, they will occasionally venture out for a field trip to continue to make connections across these developmental areas in their traveling classroom BUS.

Meet Tamara:

As a mom of 3 boys, one with a rare congenital heart defect, Tamara Wineland sought alternative approaches to education, health, and well-being early on. She stumbled upon the forest school model in 2009 during her research in her Master’s studies and was immediately drawn to the pedagogy. In 2020, she started AdventureMe Forest and Nature School in Colorado Springs, CO. upon completing immersive experiences and training with various programs throughout the United States. The noticeable benefits of time spent in nature for ALL children, and especially those identifying with additional needs, led her on a path of discovery as she trained and worked to launch a program in 2022 integrating therapies and play in a peer-supported outdoor environment. Today, Tamara serves as founder and visionary of TREK Outdoors and continues her work with the AdventureMe Forest School.

95. Legacy Of Impact: Changing The Face Of Public Education Through Outdoor Classrooms with Jodi Simpson02 Apr 202401:02:41

After the pandemic, many teachers began teaching outside. The woods, trails, playgrounds, and parks near their schools became their classrooms. Educators happily discovered that nature provided new academic and social-emotional learning opportunities. Nature-based learning, which can be as simple as bringing natural materials into the classroom or setting up learning spaces outdoors, opens up joyful and meaningful ways to learn and grow.

In this Outdoor Classrooms Tour and Talk episode, CIRCLE Member Jodi Simpson, reflects upon her teaching, her research, and the benefits of nature-based learning she has witnessed. She is excited to inspire others to experience the rewards of connecting children with the natural world. In this episode, we discuss language arts, social studies, children’s play and curiosity, along with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) which are the many pathways to falling in love with learning and seeing how we are connected to one another in this beautiful world.

MEET JODI:

Joy has been the building block of Jodi Simpson’s teaching career of 22 years. She currently teaches kindergarten and has taught preschool, first grade, and second grade. She is also the author of the Circle-Time Poetry series, published by Scholastic in 2005, as well as, Read Snack & Learn With Favorite Picture Books in 2004,. Sharing ideas and activities with other teachers helped her grow as a mentor teacher for many student teachers. She has also worked with a team of author-collaborators for our school district’s curriculum. Jodi’s learning and teaching journey includes being the recipient of the North Fork Teacher of the Year 2014 and Colorado Teacher of the Year Finalist 2017. Currently, she a part of a nature-based learning cohort of teachers that supports other educators in teaching students outdoors.

Jodi Simpson’s newest books would fall into Scholastic’s “reproducible activity books” category for grades PreK - First Grade, similar to her earlier books. The new set of books are specifically created for the latest trends in these educational movements: nature and place-based learning, structured foundational literacy skills (rhyme, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension), STEAM investigations, and social-emotional learning.

*Three new titles: 1.  Circle Time Poetry: In the Woods, 2. Circle Time Poetry: Let’s Take a Walk, and 3. Circle Time Poetry: Play & Wonder are resources for teachers to use to get outside and connect with nature, while at the same time to build phonemic awareness, oral language, and early STEAM skills. Each book invites teachers to share a poem that works as the springboard for discussions and learning extensions. The books are also created so that teachers can use them in an outdoor setting, on neighborhood walks, and as play invitations/investigations for bringing nature indoors.

91: Connect with Nature in a Disconnected World with Robyn Broudie from Roots 2 Rise19 Mar 202400:46:30

Today we have an Outdoor Classrooms Tour and Talk with Robyn Broudie from Roots to Rise. Roots 2 Rise Outdoors offers year-round nature-based exploratory programs for children ages 2 to 10 throughout Toronto, Canada and surrounding areas. Offering an alternative approach to education, they believe that by facilitating opportunities for children to deepen their connection to natural world, they are meeting a need that is vital to the healthy development of the whole child and dependent on the future of our environment.

This episode includes a visual tour which is included in the CIRCLE Membership.

MEET ROBYN:

Robyn Broudie has spent over a decade exploring some of the wild corners of the earth.  From sleeping under starry desert skies, diving deep into the ocean, and wandering through lush rainforests, she has continued to foster her insatiable curiosity for this incredible planet.  Robyn has a degree in Child Development, and has been a leader in the creation of a variety of programs that bring people closer to each other and the natural world. Her heart for humanity and her passion for the earth led her to explore the field of wilderness-based therapy. After years of guiding international trips, backcountry expeditions, and facilitating adventure therapy programs for youth and young adults challenged with mental health and addictions, she has seen firsthand how nature can be fundamental in healing.

Robyn has facilitated outdoor programs for children with unique needs, including Autism, ADD, ADHD, OCD, PTSD, trauma and addictions, recognizing that the foundational need for love and connection are the same for everyone.  By deepening their understanding of how children learn best, Robyn and her team create a space where they can meet kids where they are at, valuing and seeing their innate nature and brilliance, and providing space and time for them to expand their unique magic.

Roots 2 Rise Outdoors was born in the middle of a global pandemic, a time where we became even more isolated from each other and the natural world.  It was evident, in a world that was driving separation; connection was what we needed more than ever.

89. Explore, Create and Play with Charlotte Ellis from Seasons: A Tour and Talk12 Mar 202400:37:32

Today we have an Outdoor Classrooms Tour and Talk with Charlotte Ellis all the way from the UK representing her program called Seasons. In this episode, we discuss, the mission of Seasons and how their programs are reconnecting people with nature to benefit holistic development, health, and well-being. In our discussion, we talk about the importance of how the act of connecting to our natural world and giving our children fun experiences in nature also encourages care for our planet and building a sustainable future for our children.

Charlotte Ellis created her nature-based program called Seasons in 2022. As a mum of 4, Charlotte found that there were few outdoor play program opportunities for early years in her local area. Therefore, she decided to set up a playgroup and named it Seasons. This group grew as Charlotte began offering early years nature play classes and outdoor sessions in a community garden that she and her family developed and designed. Seasons continues to grow and hosts large community and family events across Leeds, England, as well as nature art, craft, and wellbeing workshops.

This episode includes a visual tour which is included in the CIRCLE Membership.

87. Wintergarden with Author Janet Fox05 Mar 202400:44:36

“With a little bit of love and care, a few seeds nestled in pots, and a good windowsill, there’s no better time to make an herb garden with mom than in the dead of winter. Together, a young girl and her mother can grow everything you find in a spring herb garden, from oregano to parsley and baby greens, carefully tending their plants to watch them thrive, all while frigid snow falls just outside the window. The multiple harvests of fresh greens are just what they need to stay warm through the coldest and darkest season. When Spring finally arrives, there’s one thing on the girl’s mind: more seeds!

In Wintergarden, author Janet Fox’s poetic text is accompanied by the dreamy watercolor artwork of acclaimed illustrator Jasu Hu. Additional material at the back of the book includes information on how to grow your own winter garden, to make sure you and your family can share fresh greens year-round.”

In this episode, author Janet Fox shares what inspired her to write this story and gives us a glimpse into her life as an author and passionate gardener.

86. Growing a Forest School with Bianca Hagen from Hidden Valley Forest School29 Feb 202400:07:01

In this episode we are traveling to the Hidden Valley Forest School with CIRCLE Member, Bianca Hagen, to learn why her school is so uniquely set up to instill a lifelong love of learning in children. Bianca Hagen is sharing how her forest school is growing into a Preschool through Second Grade (with plans to include 3rd-4th grades in 2025-2026)!

Hidden Valley Forest School is located on 9 beautiful acres near downtown Crozet! The program is child-centered, with a focus on social and emotional development, emergent outdoor learning, and play. In this episode, we learn how, at Hidden Valley, children are highly engaged, resourceful, and resilient learners, with Mother Nature serving as a dynamic backdrop to their learning.

MEET BIANCA:

Bianca Hagen founded Hidden Valley Forest School on her 9-acre property in central Virginia. Hidden Valley was founded in 2022 as a play-based, nature-based preschool for children ages 3 to 5 years old. In the 2024-2025 school year, Hidden Valley will be expanding to include grades Kindergarten through Second grade. Bianca hopes to expand to fourth grade the following school year.

Prior to becoming a forest school founder and teacher, Bianca worked as a renewable energy consultant for Fortune 500 companies and as a foreign policy analyst and Portuguese/Spanish linguist for the US government.

She pivoted her interests and focus after having children, becoming fascinated with early child development, attachment theory, and educational environments that truly allow children to thrive. When her research pointed her in the direction of forest schools in Scandinavia, she became devoted to providing her children with that experience.

After moving to central Virginia, Bianca realized her property was the perfect backdrop to establish a thriving forest school community, extending the many benefits of nature play to other families.

Bianca Hagen is a certified Forest School Teacher through the Forest School Teacher Institute (Levels 1, 2, and 3). She is also CPR certified and is currently attending an intensive 9-month Wilderness Immersion course at the Living Earth School in Afton, VA. Previously, she worked as a Lead Afternoon Teacher at Little Explorers Discovery School, a Reggio Emilia preschool located in Crozet, VA, where she received training in the Reggio Emilia educational approach.
