In this month's episode, we welcome Jean-Francois Couture from Applications MD. 

Applications MD is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving care in medical resuscitation. As the Director of Operations for Applications MD, Jean-Francois oversees the strategic planning, marketing, and implementation of their flagship product, EZResus, an application that guides health care professionals through the first hour of emergency and critical care situations.

In our conversation, Jean-Francois describes his professional journey from emergency physician to digital health entrepreneur. He shares his experience with developing the resuscitation application, EzResus and lessons learned along the way.

Liliana Rodriguez is an award winning Senior Service Designer and User Centred Design (UCD) leader, working for NHSE (National Health Service England) for Digital Medicines. Her education includes a BA in Product Design, an MA in Interaction Design, and a PhD in Digital Services.

Liliana has worked in commercial, non-profit, and higher education environments on design projects in health, GDS (Government Digital Services), and innovation for SMEs (small and medium enterprises). She is also an Associate Lecturer at the Open University for UX & Interaction and Design Thinking modules.

Our interview unravels Liliana's professional journey, her insights into the role of the designer in service design, and her team's work on two key projects related to HIV health. In these projects, Liliana emphasizes how participatory co-design and local context were keys to resolving challenges around access to HIV tests and #makingHIVstigmahistory.

This month, we're excited to host Dr. Peter Jones, an associate professor at Toronto’s OCAD University. Peter teaches in the Strategic Foresight and Innovation and Design for Health MDes (Master’s in Design) programs.

In this month's episode, we dive into a young person's journey with an incurable blood cancer known to affect older individuals - Multiple Myeloma.

Tanya Zigomanis was diagnosed at the age of 37. She is a young mother and patient advocate who leverages her law background and social network towards advancing myeloma research. She also applies her experiences to support other cancer patients and families navigating the complex challenges of chronic illness.

Tanya works towards innovation in cancer care, including advocating for connecting family doctors to specialists to facilitate timely cancer diagnoses and treatments.

In this special episode, our SIC Health team interviews Sandra Viviana Murillo-Morales, arQ RunicoS.

Viviana is an interdisciplinary visual artist practicing conscious ambidextrous drawing, the use of both hands while drawing. She identifies as a neurodivergent individual. Trained as an architect in Colombia, freehand drawing was always an essential communication tool in her professional practice in landscape architecture and urban design. After Viviana was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer in 2019, she began exercising both hands to alleviate pain from peripheral neuropathy in her fingers, a chronic side effect caused by cancer treatments. She developed her drawing technique using coloured pencils and watercolour on different media. Her creative process is intuitive and focuses on gratitude for life. 

Our conversation reveals Viviana's cancer journey, her regeneration through her art, her advocacy work with Ovarian Cancer Canada, her identification as a neurodivergent individual, and her deep connection to the healing power of nature. We hope Viviana's story is as inspiring to you as it was to us!

Design's origins stem from creative practices like the arts, music and writing. In this episode, we explore creative writing practice by interviewing two coaches from Firefly Creative Writing.

Firefly Creative Writing helps people reconnect to the pleasure and power of writing through workshops, coaching and snail mail, online and in-person.

Writing coaches, Kim and Mary, share their personal journeys with writing, their experiences with coaching, and most importantly, how they create diverse and inclusive spaces for writing together with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Colour) communities.

Lessons learned, such as the need for BIPOC programming to be led and owned by BIPOC identifying individuals and the concept of a "spectrum of safety and freedom", could be applied to organizations working on enhancing their equity, diversity and inclusion.
