Freaky: The Murder Barbie Story07 Oct 202400:37:07

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are body swapping and murderer fleeing. We watched the 2020 film from Christopher Landon, Freaky.

You all remember that silly movie where Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are a mother and daughter who magically switch bodies and hijinks ensue? Freaky is a lot like that one, but loads of people are brutally murdered.

It’s the classic formula for all of the best movies! Not only does it make for a fun, spooky time, it’s also going to kick off our month of spooky Halloween episodes.

We’ve got a lot of good stuff in store for you this year. In this one, Vince Vaughn is a scary-ass killer and Kathryn Newton is the teenager who unwillingly takes over his monster body. It’s good time for for everyone!

Sharks of the Corn: Let's Play Find the Corn Hole30 Sep 202400:29:54

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are being smart and just staying out of cornfields. We watched the 2021 film from Tim Ritter, Sharks of the Corn.

I’ve had it with these motherfucking sharks in this motherfucking corn! Wait, that’s a different movie entirely. Is Snakes on a Plane a better movie than this one? Lucky you, we’ve now done both of them!

Am I saying that one is better than the other? Nah, you’re stuck here with this one. (Although, I will say that one features Samuel L. Jackson, and that’s probably all you need to know.)

Listen on to find out what kind of rating sharks killing people in cornfields will get a movie. Will this one be brilliant, a flunder (i.e., a fun blunder), or the dreaded blunder…

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are probably going to get their asses kicked trying to stop some actual villains. We watched the 1999 film from Kinka Usher, Mystery Men.

And, of course, the most well-known and -loved of them all: the Blue Raja.

What, you’ve never heard of Blue Raja, you say? Nor The Shoveler or The Bowler or The Spleen? Dear friends, listen to this episode and learn all about the greatest worst hero team of them all: the Mystery Men!

A Christmas Story - Brought to You by Rich, Chocolatey Ovaltine12 Dec 202200:49:01

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are begging with everything we’ve got for an official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time. We watched the 1983 film from Bob Clark, A Christmas Story.

We want that air rifle sooo bad, we can’t even tell you. And no, we won’t shoot our eyes out. That’s probably just a myth that someone’s mom started because they didn’t want to buy their kid the best toy ever made.

We should take a page out of Ralphie’s book. We’ll start leaving hints around the house, accidentally blurting out our desires, and writing surely phenomenal school reports about what we want for Christmas.

It’s a foolproof plan!

If it can work for Ralphie, then it can work for us, dagnabbit! We’ve got to get going now. There are plans to be hatched and holiday dreams to be had. Enjoy the episode about this classic film!

Last Christmas - I Gave You My Heart05 Dec 202200:52:37

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are being encouraged to live better, happier lives by random people who meet us on the street. We watched the 2019 film from Paul Feig, Last Christmas.

What’s the message of this story? If some stranger comes up to in front of your workplace and starts chatting you up, then give them a shot because they could change your entire outlook on life?

We’re not going to say that this is good advice necessarily, but if that stranger happens to be Henry Golding, then hey, what have you got to lose?

At the very least, your life probably won’t get any worse. Imagine the upside, though. You could end up with a unique experience, love in your heart, and the motivation you need to make something good in this world.

That sounds like a good, ol’ fashioned holiday miracle to me!

Black Friday - Things Can’t Get Any Worse28 Nov 202200:39:45

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are suffering through some serious retail employee hell this damn holiday season. We watched the 2021 film from Casey Tebo, Black Friday.

To all of our dear listeners who have been subjected to or will have the misfortune of being forced to work on this most unholy of made-up holidays/shopping events: We hear you, we see you, and we sympathize with you.

This year, we encourage you to remind yourself that it could be a heck of a lot worse. You may be spending your precious holiday time away from family and friends, but at least you’re not having to fight for your lives against a growing horde of zombie creatures.

And hey, if this film is a dreadful foreshadowing of where this planet is heading, then at least you’ll have the opportunity to watch your retail prison, ahem, I mean workplace go down in flames.

Happy holidays.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are joined by the always wonderful Greg Vander Velde to discuss all things Batman. We watched and talked about the 1993 film from Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.

Elvis & Anabelle - Let’s Grow a Miracle21 Nov 202200:53:55

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are running away with newly risen Texas beauty queens. We watched the Will Geiger film from 2007, Elvis & Anabelle.

Did this movie invent a new genre? Gothic dramatic romantic road trip family drama?

Whatever the heck it is, Joe Mantegna completely stole every scene he was in. Nobody else could compete. If you’re going to see this movie, do it mostly for him.

However, there’s also a clever love story to be found in this film. It’s unique, quirky, and by all accounts, fairly strange. But when has that ever stopped love from taking over a person?

We’re not sure that the love between Elvis and Anabelle should have been so vilified, but we are certain that their love should bloom like a field of sunflowers.

A Knight’s Tale - It’s Called a Lance. Hello…14 Nov 202200:35:25

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are hitting dudes with long, pointy sticks while on horseback so we can win the hearts of our fair maidens. We watched the 2001 film from Brian Helgeland, A Knight’s Tale.

I’m going to take a second to think about another movie that makes such good use of classic rock music in a way that doesn’t feel forced or fall flat…

I’ve come to a quick conclusion: There isn’t another movie like this one. That’s a curious thing because the early 2000s were flush with films that featured quirky storylines, burgeoning superstars, and low-stakes romance.

But did any of them have the unique combination of intense rivalry between nobility and peasants, rousing jousting scenes, and Paul Bettany’s butt? No, I don’t think any of them do.

Part of what makes A Knight’s Tale wonderful is its daring to push on the bounds of its early ‘00s filmmaking box. It could have easily been any other forgettable adventure-romance thing, but it persists because of its special charms.

The Kid Detective - Claritin Is a P.I.’s Best Friend07 Nov 202200:55:38

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are breaking the biggest case of our storied career WIDE OPEN! We watched the Evan Morgan film from 2020, The Kid Detective.

Can you imagine how hard it must be to have an entire town’s hopes and dreams placed squarely on your young shoulders? The pressure that must put on a person is unimaginable!

And in the case of Abe Applebaum, it wasn’t about a championship sports game or some nonsense like that. No, his entire town is hoping and expecting that he’ll find a young girl who’s gone missing. Oh, and she’s the mayor’s daughter. Easy peasy, right?

When that understandably doesn’t work out because Abe is just a child at that point, the town gets all grumbly about it? That, friends, is what we call some bullshit.

Luckily, our dear detective is given another chance when a local high school girl stops by his office and asks him to investigate the murder of her secret boyfriend. The investigation is afoot!

Llamageddon - But Steven, Why?!31 Oct 202200:36:15

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are chilling at parties, running for our lives, and taking down evil space llamas with laser eyes. We watched the 2015 “film” from Howie Dewin, Llamageddon.

I’m not sure if there’s anything I can say here that will prepare you for what this movie is. It defies logic, expectations, and all common sense.

Should you watch it? Yes, but only if you do it with some friends (or maybe, in this case, your enemies).

Just remember, Steven put this on our episode index, so the only appropriate response to this film is, “But Steven, why?!”

The Mist - This Is Why You Should Never Go Outside24 Oct 202200:49:38

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trying to deal with an über-religious, murderous, deluded nut bag of a person. Also there are giant monsters in a choking mist threatening to eat us all. It’s the Frank Darabont film from 2007, The Mist.

We’re having a difficult time trying to figure out who is the worst monster in this film. Is it the literal otherworldly insect demon creatures who came through on the titular mist, or is it that damn Mrs. Carmody?

Mull it over for a little while. I feel confident that you’re going to have just as hard of a time figuring it out.

Honestly, at some points, I’d rather just be torn apart by the alien monsters. At least they’re just acting like the creatures driven by hunger and instinct that they are. Carmody… Well, she should know better.

The moral of this story: If you see a vast, invasive mist headed your way, you’d probably end up doing best to stay out of your local supermarket. You never know how Lord of the Flies it’s going to get in there. Or at least make sure you have enough bullets.

Oculus - A Descent Into Madness17 Oct 202200:37:36

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are avoiding all mirrors, even the ordinary IKEA ones, like our life depends on it (because it freaking does). We watched the 2014 film from Mike Flanagan, Oculus.

This could be significantly worse than a Bloody Mary situation. If memory serves, saying that creature’s name three times summons it and then, surprise surprise, it kills you where you stand.

This damn Oculus mirror, though? What a hideous jerk this thing is. Not only are you going to end up dead, but it’s going to toy with you along the way. It’s going to mess you up emotionally before it destroys you physically.

And is there a single thing you can do about it? Nope. You can’t even be certain that you’re walking away from and escaping its field of evil influence. It might be tricking your mind into thinking you’re leaving while you’re still standing right in front of it.

What a terrible mirror. And I’ll just go ahead and say it: The thing doesn’t even look all that great. Here that, Mirror? You’re ugly! Yeah, I said it.

Getting stabbed, flying around in a machine gun jetpack, toppling a giant mafia organization… It’s all in a day’s work for your average hero.

And believe me when I tell you that this hero is most definitely average. Does he have superpowers? Does he have some dark origin story involving the murder of a family member? Is he even particularly good at fighting bad guys?

I Am Legend - Light Up the Darkness10 Oct 202200:46:37

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trying not to get eaten by zombie vampire creatures while also dealing with a post-apocalyptic world. This time, we’re talking about the Francis Lawrence film from 2007, I Am Legend.

It may seem callous to say, but I hope that no animals will be able to survive a real apocalypse like the one shown in this film. It would be sad, for sure. However, I sure as hell don’t want to do what Robert Neville had to do to his poor dog.

That may have been one of the most heartbreaking things ever.

The rest of the film, though? Pretty dang clever and exciting. As far as ends of the world go, this one didn’t seem particularly bad. All you’ve got to do is keep to a schedule and cover your tracks at all times. Seems like a person could make that work.

I won’t ever say I could, but Neville certainly did. Then again, I’m no world famous scientist, so what do I know?

Blade - Some Motherfuckers Are Always Trying to Ice Skate Uphill03 Oct 202200:35:04

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are strapping into our finest leather body armor and getting ready to kill some vampires. This time, we watched the Stephen Norrington film from 1998, Blade.

I don’t think I ever would have guessed that politics would play such an integral role in the lives of vampires, but I keep getting proven wrong. This film, What We Do In the Shadows, and heck, even in Twilight there’s always a top council of vampires.

One would think that near immortality and extreme strength would lend itself toward more anarchy, but these vamps just can’t help but be political.

And yet, they can never foresee or stop an avenging character like Blade. For all their puttering around and talking across long tables, they all end up getting messed up by some daywalking force of vengeance.

I think the moral of this story is that vampires, while powerful and occasionally sexy, aren’t able to think outside the box. I hope this won’t come back to bite me one day, pun very much intended, but vampires are kinda dumb.

Machete - You Just Fucked with the Wrong Mexican26 Sep 202200:49:01

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are seeking some sweet revenge after being double-crossed by crooked businessmen and politicians. We watched and talked about the Robert Rodriguez film from 2010, Machete.

Let’s see… Have we got an ex-Federale waging an unstoppable crusade to enact bloody revenge on the bastards who took his family and life away from him? Check.

A brother who is a man of God but isn’t all that concerned with all of that “do not kill” nonsense? Check.

The sweetest comeuppance for an extremist political asshole you could ever hope to find in a movie? Check.

Lindsay Lohan dressed as a murderous nun? Um, check?

It appears that this film has everything a person could ever want in an action flick. Better yet, it’s our B movie of the month. Listen on to find out if we give it a rating of brilliant, flunder, or the dreaded blunder.

The Ice Storm - Slippery When Wet19 Sep 202200:53:58

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are experimenting with weirdo key parties from the ‘70s, but then chickening out and going back home to watch cartoons or something. This time, we’re talking about the Ang Lee film from 1997, The Ice Storm.

Watching this film, you might have a hard time trying to figure out what makes you more uncomfortable. Is it the sexual experimentation of young people or is it the publicly failing marriages of adults who should really know better?

For my money, it’s probably the latter. All of the young people in this film are treated with respect, and really, it’s what teenagers do.

Now the adults… Well, they’re exhibiting a special flavor of desperation. It’s unpleasant, pitiful, and a great warning about how poorly a person’s life and marriage can go if you don’t care and nurture both.

The Ice Storm is a film that demands a lot of its audience, but it rewards just as much. It’ll shock you, make you think, and, fair warning, probably put you in a, let’s say, icy, midnight sort of mood.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are fending off the forces of evil… again and we’re doing it with the love of our lives by our sides. This episode, we watched the Stephen Sommers film from 2013, Odd Thomas.

Is it just Odd or are you sick of just trying to work your satisfying job of feeding all of your family and friends in your quaint, albeit probably hot and sticky, desert town but your life is continually interrupted by death-loving spirit monsters?

Is it just Odd? Nobody else out there has to deal with the fearsome nonsense he has to put up with day after day? That’s kind of a bummer.

But hey, he does it with grace and aplomb. If you ever find yourself at the losing end of a creepy haunting/possession/poltergeist, then there’s only one person you should ever consider going to for help.

He’s casually cool, he’s got the best emotional support in the world, and he’s totally… Odd.

Killer Sofa - All Thirst. No Quench.29 Aug 202200:27:26

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are getting it on with possessed furniture and yes you read that right—people are having sex with couches and recliners. It’s a weird world out there! We watched the Bearnie Rao film from 2021, Killer Sofa.

Let’s get this out of the way first: The thing isn’t actually a sofa. It’s a recliner. Killer Recliner wouldn’t have quite the same ring. We get it, but we know some of you dear listeners are sticklers for the truth. What can we say? They must do things differently in New Zealand.

Now… There’s a recliner that kills people. Straight up creeps on them, stabs them with its pointy springs, and murders them with an impressive amount of animosity. You don’t want to get on this thing’s bad side.

Frankly, I think that’s easy enough to do. Just don’t sit on the thing or hang out with Francesca. Those two simple actions will make your life 100% less filled with killer furniture. You probably already have a sofa; go sit on that one instead.

By the end of this episode, we’ll give this film our B-movie rating. Will it be a blunder, a flunder, or will it be brilliant? The answer may surprise you!

Final Destination - John Denver Is a Cold-Blooded Killer22 Aug 202200:36:07

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are giving Death the finger as we go about our lives narrowly escaping doom at every turn. We watched the 2000 film from James Wong, Final Destination.

So…

Is anyone else absolutely terrified to go into their bathroom, kitchen, or take any plane trip now? Surely, I’m not the only one. I want to say that I don’t believe Death is some sort of real being that holds a serious grudge, but you never know, right?

All I’m saying is that I don’t want to take the risk. Maybe I accidentally avoided my grisly demise many years ago and have been living my life worry-free since then. Until watching this film, I thought I was all good. Nope, no spirits of doom after me!

I guess this is the day I become a complete and utter hermit. Time to never leave the house. Time to also remove every single thing from the house, too. That Death sure is a sneaky bastard.

If you need me, I’ll be shivering in a corner somewhere, hoping Death won’t be balancing its scales with me anytime soon. In the meantime, enjoy the episode!

Get Out - White People Love Making People Sex Slaves15 Aug 202200:53:39

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are kicking some white people asses, and I mean just demolishing them, for their freaky medical experiments. We watched Jordan Peele’s 2017 film, Get Out.

While I will admit to being a white guy, I can happily say that I’ve never, not once in my entire life, harbored any desires to inject the consciousness of other white people into the heads of kidnapped black people.

What can I say? I just don’t have that in me, and it’s been so easy not to do any of that weird, freaky shit the Armitages were engaging in. I can’t begin to tell you how easy it is not to be a raging, racist monster.

So what is it with other people? Why do they, as our dear Rod says, want to make people into sex slaves?

It’s all messed up is what I’m telling you. I’m going to go out and casually admonish some white people for this whole sex slave business. I’m sure that will go well. In the meantime, enjoy this thrilling and essential film.

Black Bear - These People Should Not Drink Coffee08 Aug 202200:38:19

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are reliving our film school days with the twisting, turning 2020 film from Lawrence Michael Levine, Black Bear.

I can just about guarantee that this film is not what you think it is. It certainly threw us for a loop when we got into it. We had one of those fabled shared watching experiences with Black Bear. We thought we knew what we were getting into, but man, could we not have been more mistaken.

The first half of it is about what you’d expect and then BAM! Things get crazy.

There’s a power in flipping the expectations of a film viewer. Lulling a watcher into a sense of relative comfort (not to suggest that any of this film is comfortable) and then subverting that feeling can help make for a memorable work.

It certainly doesn’t hurt anything when you’ve got the great Aubrey Plaza and Sarah Gadon doing some phenomenal work. Aside from the clever story, their powerful performances are what makes this film work as well as it does.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trying to stay as quiet as possible while the world is ending. We watched the 2024 film from Michael Sarnoski, A Quiet Place: Day One.

I think there’s a non-zero amount of people who think they can survive an alien invasion like the one shown in this film. I’m here to say that there’s a good chance that’s not true.

In fact, there’s a 100% chance that your trusty podcast hosts would die within the first few minutes. Would we even make it past thirty seconds? Don’t get your hopes up.

I don’t think any of us are as badass as Samira from this film. I’m hoping that we won’t ever have to find out. What you can do is enjoy this thrilling episode of the podcast!

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are hearing things they probably shouldn’t be hearing in the 1981 film from Brian De Palma, Blow Out.

Travolta wants to know if he’s going to hell for using Nancy Allen’s dying scream in his schlocky, probably a porn film he’s working on.

Allen probably wants to know why Travolta looks so greasy throughout this entire film.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trying to stop our hearts from dying by doing everything we can to make our hearts explode in the 2006 film from Mark Neveldine and Bryan Taylor, Crank.

I’m going to give you a second to think of and give me the name of a film that’s more insane than this one. Go ahead.

Second’s up!

The only film that could possibly be more insane than this one is its sequel, Crank: High Voltage. THERE ARE NO OTHER CRAZIER FILMS! This thing is about as ridiculous, wild, ludicrous, violent, or gratuitous as this one.

To quote the great Martha Stewart, “Now that’s a good thing.”

So saddle up, slam several Red Bulls, and join us on this ride into utter and depraved lunacy. You’ll be glad you did.

Naked Singularity - Think of the Lives That Could Change…18 Jul 202200:37:29

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are exploring the mysteries of the universe… Just kidding, we’re actually stealing a bunch of money from insane murderers in the 2021 film from Chase Palmer, Naked Singularity.

Ya know how, when you’re busy trying to steal a bunch of life-changing money, you feel a connection with the entire universe, nay, the multi-verse, and your connection with the ethereal messes with everything?

That’s a relatable feeling, right? We’ve all been there.

Or maybe you’re trying to defend an innocent person in court and the system isn’t prepared to see your client as a human being. Out of nowhere, you find yourself floating about a foot off the ground for indiscernable reasons. Could happen to anybody.

Or you’re in a firefight alongside a bunch of Rabbi mobsters. You’re battling it out, guns ablazing and tear gas canisters a-poppin'. You end up stabbing someone through the stomach with your giant katana sword. Just another Tuesday.

Everything I’ve described happens in this film. It’s all a little crazy.

The Rocketeer - The Only Way to Fly11 Jul 202200:37:55

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are flying through the clouds and kicking some Nazi butt in the 1991 film by Joe Johnston, The Rocketeer.

If I had Howard Hughes money, I would 100% build myself a jetpack, too. Who can blame the guy? Who in the world doesn’t want to fly high up with the birds and such? Even now, when commercial air travel is so prevalent and relatively affordable, a jetpack would be the coolest thing ever.

And where are they? We’ve been told, in countless Disney theme park exhibitions, that the future is going to be full of jetpacks and pill-sized meals. When will this future finally happen?

I’m sick of waiting!

Cliff makes it looks like so much fun in this film. I’m not looking to strap a sleek helmet onto my head and become some sort of high-flying superhero here. I would like to beat the freeway traffic and get to where I want to go in less than an hour, though. I don’t think that’s too much to ask.

All I’m saying is this movie is fun as heck, rousing time. And if you know someone who’s created or is even working on a viable personal jetpack, then let me know.

What is it with aliens who are always trying to blow up our national monuments? To be frank, it’s a real jerk move, and they should all be ashamed. They should feel bad about trying to exterminate the entire human race, but our greatest buildings and structures?

That’s going too far.

I digress. Those are all just buildings and structures. The US Bank building in downtown L.A.? They can just build a new one. I would be surprised if there’s a lot of fascinating history there. It’s indicative of a larger problem, though: Why are we leaving ourselves so open to chaos and destruction caused by creatures from the stars?

Where’s the global defense system that will save not only our landmarks, but our very lives? Is humanity so dispensable? Have we learned nothing from these movies?

Write your Congressperson, folks. We need to get on this. (Also, this movie is still entertaining as heck.)

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are doing what a whole lot more people should be doing: Doing what Jason Statham tells us to do and staying out of the water. It’s the 2018 film from Jon Turteltaub, The Meg.

Some of you may think he’s just some English meathead who’s been in a few excellent Guy Ritchie films and a whole lot more terrible films from other directors. What you may not know is he’s secretly a genius oceanographer and deep sea diver.

You think I’m making things up? I think you’re not giving the great Statham the credit he so rightly deserves! He saved all of our lives from an enormous, nearly unstoppable megalodon shark and you have the temerity to deny him his bona fides? How dare you.

This is just another example of how hard the prettiest and richest people in the world have it. You have no idea. We’ve got an action film hero who just wants to demonstrate his love of the deep, blue sea and a bunch of armchair critics are demanding that he stay in his lane.

Well, not this guy! I’m 100% in camp Statham. When the next installment in the obviously a documentary series, The Meg 2: The Trench, comes out in 2023, I’ll be there celebrating this great man’s wonderful scientific achievements. Because that’s what a real fan does.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are making our way back to an alien infested planet for some damn reason even though there’s not really any sensible reason to when you get right down to it in the 1986 film from James Cameron, Aliens.

Full disclosure, I’m not someone who has seen all of the Alien films. Notably, I’m missing out on the third and fourth ones in the long-running series. That being said, when the hell are people going to start listening to Sigourney Weaver?

As far as I can tell, she’s there to be ridiculed and brushed off. “Look at that dopey science nerd telling us not to go investigate the killing ground of a possible murderous alien! Who cares if she might have tussled with one of those things? First, she’s a woman, and second, doesn’t she see how big our guns are?”

I’m assuming that’s how the conversation would have gone. It seems that sexism is alive and well in the Alien universe, despite space travel being a normal and boring thing.

On the other hand, this is a pretty dang good action film that stays true to the spirit of the first film. That James Cameron sure knows how to make a thrilling piece of entertainment. I think he’ll be going places.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are chewing gum and kicking bad guy asses… and we’re all out of gum in the 2015 film from Paul Feig, Spy.

This film is a breath of fresh air. It’s a healing tonic when the world gets to be just too dang much. It’s a thrilling adventure story with amazing action, heartwarming friendship, and creepy Italian men. What more could a person want?

I’ll tell you what I want: a sequel to this wonderful film!

What the hell is happening out in Hollywood that a new adventure featuring the surprisingly badass Susan Cooper isn’t already a reality? It’s been years since this film came out. Give us a Spy 2, you cowards!

I’d be willing to put some money down that everyone involved with this first film would love to do a second. Where are the speed bumps? What could possibly be slowing things down? Readers/listeners, rest assured that if I had movie producer levels of money, then I would make the sequel happen in a heartbeat.

I don’t, unfortunately, but the spirit is there. Regardless, give us all more of this goodness. We deserve it after the last few years, wouldn’t you say?

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are on a relentless mission to avenge the lives of our loved ones in the 2020 film from Anders Thomas Jensen, Riders of Justice.

With elements of a funnier Taken, the series proving that knowing Liam Neeson means you will one day be kidnapped, this Danish film transforms a tragedy of immense proportions into a thriller that may only work from a Scandinavian country.

It’s been proven time and again that those countries understand how to produce snowy mystery films and tv shows that are a step above the rest of the world. Heck, there’s a whole genre of books written by Scandinavian authors that feature the sort of tone that infuses this film.

It’s one of the reasons why I would love to go to Denmark or Sweden or Norway. Not necessarily because I want to risk my life (note: I’m sure those countries are remarkably safe places, especially compared to my home country), but because I wouldn’t mind them making a gripping film series about me.

I know I’d want to see it: A well-meaning podcast host suddenly finds himself hot on the trail of a creepy serial killer who only works when the Northern Lights shine over the world. The story just writes itself at that point!

Oh, and the film we’re talking about this episode is amazing. Make sure you watch it.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are traveling through space to save the universe from the dreaded Emperor Ming. We watched the 1980 film from Mike Hodges, Flash Gordon.

I don’t want to give too much of this one away. Rest assured, though, that watching this film at the right time in one’s life could be a formative experience. By the time the credits roll, you won’t be the same person.

Waiting…23 May 202200:49:43

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are committing more health code violations than a person could possibly keep track of with the 2005 film from Rob McKittrick, Waiting…

If this film isn’t enough to make you swear off ever eating food at a restaurant again, then I don’t know what will. It definitely made my feel extra queasy, enough to take that vow.

Yes, I’m saying a vow of starvation is miles better than eating food with pubic hair in it. There are just some things that should never be done to another human being and that’s one of them.

Add to the list: intentionally dropping food on the floor, sprinkling crunchy dandruff on it, and rubbing it all on your junk. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with these people? Restaurant waitstaff may not be the most glamorous occupation and the customers can be the scum of the earth, but some things go too far.

What doesn’t go far enough, apparently? Showing your bits to the other guys at the restaurant and kicking them in the butt for unintentionally looking. These people are true degenerates.

In the Heat of the Night16 May 202200:46:48

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are slapping old, white racists in the face because they deserve nothing less with the 1967 film from Norman Jewison, In the Heat of the Night.

Let’s get this out of the way first. Racism is bad and racists are terribly under-educated, fearful people who could use a good dose of empathy and love in their lives. Sure, there’s nothing groundbreaking there, but it needs to be said, sadly. Many things have gotten better since the ‘60s, but there’s still a lot to be done.

This is a cracking good mystery, with a wrinkle for the ages. The small town of Sparta, Mississippi just lost one of its greatest future benefactors: the wealthy and industrious Philip Colbert. In an act of senseless violence, he’s left dead in the middle of an alleyway, stripped of all his money.

Detective Virgil Tibbs, who happens to be passing through at the time of the murder, is found in the train station and picked up for the crime of being black in the wrong place and at the wrong time. Good thing he’s an educated police officer. I shudder to think what would have happened to him were he anyone else.

His expertise helps bring new and powerful information about this murder to light. The local police chief, Bill Gillespie, in an unusually progressive fashion, comes to respect Tibbs. The pair work the case, which has more twists and turns than anyone could have guessed.

Maybe the institutional racism of the town isn’t broken down, but I’d bet you that Gillespie becomes a marginally better person. Small victories are still victories, right?

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are on the hunt for a mysterious hidden treasure and shooting at loads of people along the way with the 2008 film from Kim Jee-woon, The Good, the Bad, the Weird.

Perhaps this film won’t be anything that breaks any new storytelling ground—it is a new version of the classic The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly by Sergio Leone. Given the history of spaghetti westerns liberally borrowing from other films, that one was also probably a retread of other things, too.

There’s nothing original anymore; all the stories have been told. What matters now is telling familiar stories in fresh ways.

Friend, this one tells a familiar story in the freshest way imaginable. It’s a rollicking buddy-chase-shootout-caper western and that’s a fantastic combination of genres. Stick all those ingredients together and you’ve got a hell of a crazy stew going.

What’s great about this one is its ability to surprise. You may be familiar with this story, but it’s still not going to be what you expect. There’s plenty of heavy emotion and blistering action. It’s a truly stellar film from South Korea.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are just blowing crap up in the 1995 film from Michael Bay, Bad Boys.

I’m curious, is this another one of those mix-‘em-ups that could be solved by sitting down and having a clear and calm conversation with all parties involved? Not with the vaguely European bad guys. Those punks aren’t going to listen to anybody. They’re all about the drug money.

But the situation with Mike, Marcus, and Julie—couldn’t everything be cleared up by brewing some coffee, taking it easy for a bit, and explaining that Mike and Marcus are the opposite of who she thinks they are? Easy peasy, lemon squeezy, right?

Or is that just me being a grump? Maybe I’ve seen too many films that are full of dumb people who need to learn how to communicate a heck of a lot better?

Whatever the case may be, none of it actually matters. This is a Michael Bay film, dear friends. The only thing that does matter is his pathological, fetishistic need to see shit blow up! BANG! POW! BLAM! Michael Bay needs those KABOOMS! and he needs them now!

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are doing everything we can to not become hanging sacks of cotton candy goo in the Stephen Chiodo film from 1988, Killer Klowns from Outer Space.

If you can give us any illuminating information about why the heck these clowns, sorry, klowns landed on Earth, systematically hunted down humans, and were a general nuisance, I would be grateful. The film sure as hell didn’t answer those questions!

Was it just for the sweet, sweet human goo that we become when we’re trapped in one of their sick human farming pods? Is their motivation just to get out their craziest of crazy straws and slurp us on down? Are we nothing but food to them? Is this film actually a commentary on the exploitation of factory farming here in real life?

These answers may forever elude us. I like to think these sick bastards did all those heinous acts because the screenwriters had no idea what they were doing. Tell me I’m wrong—they came up with a catchy title and then had to try stuffing a feature-length production into an idea the size of what should have been an extended short film.

Whatever the case may be, we watched this B-movie, so that means we also need to rate it. Will this one earn itself a blunder, a flunder, or the increasingly rare brilliant?

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are running for our freaking lives in the 1979 film from Ridley Scott, Alien.

Can we all assume that the evil corporation that dooms these poor cargo transporters is clearly Amazon or Facebook (sorry, Meta)? At least in this film, the corporation isn’t explicitly revealed, just that the crew communicates with a computer called “Mother.” So what else could it be?

What other company devalues human life to this extent? Also, there are robots all over the place, and you can’t convince me that Zuckerberg isn’t one.

It’s a shame that the poor crew of the Nostromo is being used as fodder to get this murderous creature back to the corporation. They’re merely sacrifices for weapon advancement. Human beings seen as nothing but cattle!

And to what end? There’s no controlling this titular creature. Does the corporation think they’re going to give it some small treats and train it into submission like a little puppy? Nah, man, everyone’s going to die! To borrow a phrase from the sequel, “Game over, man!”

That’s a lot, I know. I’m still just bummed about John Hurt. He didn’t have to go out that way.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are receiving otherworldly transmissions and venturing out into the farthest reaches of space in the 1997 film from Robert Zemeckis, Contact.

This film does many things well, but the best thing it does is inspire deep thought and conversation. It demands that you consider the world outside of your microcosm. It asks you what it would be like if there was other life in the universe and what would that mean for humanity.

To package those questions up in an admittedly lengthy film that features great drama, romance, and suspense is a master stroke. I guess the wonderful Carl Sagan and Zemeckis understood that you need spectacle to encourage people to consider substance.

So, what would you do if we received a credible transmission from a star system many lightyears away from Earth? Would it be something to celebrate, something to investigate, or something to destroy… inate?

At the very least, I think we can all agree that this film posits a spectacular premise. It encourages us to love each other and work together to move ourselves forward. That’s pretty dang noble.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are floating around for the sake of our dang lives in the 2017 film from Daniel Espinosa, Life.

I’m going to make it my mission in, ahem, life to never find myself traveling into space. Outer space, inner space, it doesn’t matter. I don’t want any part of the universe outside of the atmosphere of Earth. No good can come of rejecting the gravity of this planet.

What, does that seem extreme to you? Should I have some sort of noble explorer’s spirit and want to venture out into the farthest reaches of the universe? Should I want to boldly go where no human has gone before? And for what, the betterment of humankind?

Did you even watch this film yet? I encourage you to do so if you haven’t. Pay particular attention to what happens to poor Ryan Reynolds, Sexiest Man Alive in 2010. Do you want your insides to become blenderized into a goo that you spew out before dying a sad, lonely death?

That’s probably guaranteed in space. If movies have taught us anything, and why else are we here on this podcast, it’s that space is full of murderous alien creatures who want to kill and/or eat our sexiest people (I’ll include myself in that, because why not?). Save the sexiness by staying on Earth.

The Luck of the Irish28 Mar 202200:35:22

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are on a family quest to retrieve our lucky coin that was stolen by leprechauns. Yes, literal leprechauns. It’s the 2001 film by Paul Hoen, The Luck of the Irish.

Did anyone else have a middle school experience where your parents started shrinking, you started sucking at basketball out of the blue, your friends got on your case—and hard—about not knowing your heritage, and you were transported around the world to play classic Irish strength and endurance games, or was that just poor Kyle Johnson?

This guy has lived a sheltered and fortunate life until he makes the understandable mistake of attending his town’s Irish appreciation festival. It’s there that the lucky coin that’s passed down through his family is stolen straight off his neck by some step-dancing fools.

His life gets so hard, guys. Sooo hard! His mother starts shrinking, he meets his grandfather for the first time and that guy immediately starts growing a massive beard, and those previously mentioned fools put his family’s lives in danger! This is all done amid some pretty egregious anti-Irish joking, but hey, the early ‘00s weren’t the most progressive years.

Being a B-movie bonus episode, we finish off the episode by crowning this film with our most sacred of rankings. Is this one a blunder, a flunder, or the lucky brilliant? Listen on to find out!

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story21 Mar 202200:38:15

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Pirate Steven and Sean are dodging, ducking, dipping, diving, and dodging in the 2004 film from Rawson Marshall Thurber, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.

Don’t you just hate it when Ben Stiller gets all up in your business, threatening to ruin you financially and sticking his literally inflated crotch in your face? What a punk, am I right?

Okay, the man himself seems like a decent fellow, but his character, White Goodman, is about the farthest thing away from a good man. He’s a self-conscious jerk-face who thrives off the disappointment and misfortune of other people. He’d probably say something like, “Well, I made it because of my hard work. What’s your problemo, amigo?”

It’s a good thing that decent people exist in this world. Cue Peter La Fleur, owner and operator of Average Joe’s Gym. It’s a place where you can go to feel happy and welcome. While you’re there, be sure to pick up a game or two of dodgeball. Not only will you be engaging in the sport that saved the day, you’ll also be making the ghost of dear Patches O’Houlihan happy.

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens: A Newer Hope01 Jul 202401:02:08

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are back to fighting the freaking Empire… erm, I mean the First Order. We watched the 2015 film from J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… evil space dictatorships just won’t stay put down. Just when you think the magic space wizards have established peace, someone comes along with an enormous, planet-destroying laser weapon.

It’s enough to make you want to pick up your fearsome laser sword and start hacking down some bastards. Is it too much to ask for just an eternity of peace and prosperity amongst all the connected planets?

But oh no, there’s always a whiny man-boy who just has to ruin it for everybody instead of going to see a therapist about his daddy issues. This is why we can’t have nice things! For the love of Chewie, just one nice thing!

The Limey14 Mar 202201:03:42

Send us a text

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are joined, once again, by the always excellent Landon Coats to talk about the revenge story with the most cockney accent around. It’s the 1999 film by Steven Soderbergh, The Limey.

It’s always a good time when Landon drops by because it means we get to talk about all of the movies. No stone goes unturned! We’re delving deep into Soderbergh’s filmography in this one.

That’s not all, though. When Terence Stamp, playing Wilson, comes to kick the crap out of a load of people, you know crap is going to be kicked. It’ll be with a rough British accent, but that’s not going to make it charming or easier to handle. No, people are probably going to die.

The question is: when you’re on a righteous mission of vengeance, is it all forgivable? That’s a question the movie is asking. The people that are at the wrong end of this man’s wrath are meeting their demise, but they’re not great people either. Do two wrongs make a right when it comes to your beloved family?

The twist on this morality angle happens when it becomes clear that the person who instigated this rampage is way over his head. The antagonist of the film, Valentine, plays like he’s a big ol’ tough guy, but he’s just loaded. He plays at being cool and powerful. That’s what everybody says until they’re staring at their doom.

This is a wonderful film with a great cast and unique direction. Be sure to check it out and spread the word about it.

Like Father, Like Son07 Mar 202200:48:30

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trading children like they’re freaking Yu-Gi-Oh cards up in this place in the 2013 film from Hirokazu Kore-eda, Like Father, Like Son.

We watched and talked about this film at length and I’m still baffled by some of the decisions that these supposed adults took with their children’s lives. How do you look at the baby you’ve raised into a real walking and talking person and say, “Nah, there’s someone else out there that I’m going to choose. You don’t understand, kid, he’s got my blood.

But here we are, and that’s the exact movie we talked about in this episode. Granted, the other parents weren’t so keen on the idea of upending their the lives of their kids, so I think they get a pass.

It’s a real nature vs. nurture situation here. Are you the product of your genetics or are you what your parents and community made you? Surely, it’s a combination of the two. It can’t be completely one or the other.

This film asks a tough question: Would you give up the child you raised if you found out that they weren’t your biological child? Would you take on the life of someone else’s kid out of some misplaced sense of vanity? Or would you be a better parent than Ryota and come to appreciate the life you helped develop a lot sooner than that doofus did?

Whatever the case may be, it sure as heck makes for a complex and stellar film.

Eight Legged Freaks28 Feb 202200:34:51

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trying not to become a spider’s next hot meal in the Ellory Elkayem film from 2002, Eight Legged Freaks.

If there’s any lesson we all can take from these B-movie bonus episodes it’s that we should listen to the nerdy kids a whole lot more. They usually have exactly the right ideas. Instead, what, we’re supposed to fall in line with the brooding hunk?

How is that the right idea? What the heck does that guy know about fighting off hordes of mutant spider monsters? Exactly nothing, I tell ya. Nothing!

You should probably also find the nearest woman in authority because she’s got her head on straight. She’s probably also a badass with a gun who won’t hesitate to lead a crowd of people to safety.

Heck, you could probably also find the local conspiracy theory nut who’s broadcasting on their own pirate radio signal from a camper in the middle of a desert. There’s a better the fair chance that he’ll at least know when to run away.

Look, all I’m saying is, and I mean no disrespect, if you find yourself face to face with a horde of murderous spider monsters, don’t follow David Arquette anywhere. Run the other way and you’ll probably be all right.
