Matt Lawrence is a GRAMMY Award-winning producer, mixer and engineer who has worked with some of the worlds biggest acts.

His credits include Adele, Amy Winehouse, Black Eyed Peas, Naughty Boy, Emeli Sande, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé to name a few.

Starting out at Van Morrison’s residential studio in Bath, A move to London’s legendry Metropolis Studios saw him rise through the ranks to become Chief Engineer where he went on to work with some of the biggest acts in the world.

Names such as Sir George Martin, Butch Vig, Steve Osborne, Ben Hillier, Guy Sigsworth, Alan Moulder, Gary Langan, Nellee Hooper, Michael Kamen, Bill Price, Norman Cook, Mark Ronson, Justin Timberlake, Timberland and Will.i.am have all had a direct influence on his career.

Welcome to MixBus with Kevin Paul.

This series aims to allow some of the best producers, mixers, engineers and other music industry people to discuss their careers and their approach to music.

In this first episode I’m delighted to welcome producer and mixer Catherine Marks.

Catherine first moved to London in 2005 to train as an assistant engineer under Flood at Assault and Battery studios in London.

In 2009 Catherine began working alongside the Brit Award-Winning producer and mixer Alan Moulder, where she worked on projects including Interpol, Foals, Death Cab for Cutie, Killers, Ronnie Vannuci and Blonde Redhead.

Catherine won the 2016 MPG Award as Breakthrough Producer of The Year and in 2018 Catherine won the award for MPG Producer of the Year. I sat down with Catherine to discuss how and why she got into the studio and what it’s like to work at Assault and Battery studios with Flood and Alan Moulder and her approach to working with bands and production.

Steve Dub is a five-time GRAMMY Award-winner (we recorded this podcast when he had won three) and his career as a producer, mixer, programmer and songwriter was born out of the underground dance music explosion of the early 90’s and he has gone on to work with some of the most influential artists of the past 20 years. UNKLE, Roots Manuva, The Chemical Brothers, New Order, The Prodigy, Leftfield, Primal Scream, Orbital, Beth Orton, Moby and Underworld are just a small sample of the people he’s worked with.

Musician, DJ and producer, Danny Briottet was founder member of Renegade Soundwave, UK electronic music pioneers at the forefront of the original dance/electronica explosion of the late 80s/ 90s with seminal tracks such as The Phantom, Women Respond To Bass and Probably A Robbery. RSW are name-checked as a primary influence on artists such as The Prodigy and the Chemical Brothers, whist their seminal 1988 release Ozone Breakdown is often cited as the first Jungle tune. Danny’s production and remix credits include Depeche Mode, Cypress Hill, Aswad, Radiohead, Grace Jones, Moby and Orbital, together with a wealth of World Music artists such as Esma Redzepova (Macedonian Queen of Gypsies), Amina Anabi (Tunisia) and Cheick Tidiane (Mali).

Current projects include –Rhythm Riders – a collaboration with fellow West Londoners Aswad and Tim Bran (Dreadzone, London Grammar) and I've been looking forward to this one for a while.

Grammy Nominated Engineer Caesar Edmunds moved from Singapore to Liverpool in 2009 to study at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. (LIPA) Graduating in 2013 Caesar was also presented with the coveted Sennheiser Studio Excellence Award.

In 2012 Caesar joined the eminent Producers Alan Moulder and Flood as an Assistant Engineer at Assault & Battery Studios And has since worked with artists such as Foals, Queens of the Stone Age, The Killers, PJ Harvey, St Vincent, Ride, Circa Waves, Twin Atlantic and Two Door Cinema Club. A vital part of the team here at Assult and Battery I’m interested to hear from him the role to he plays at the studio and working for Flood and Alan Moulder.

Today I’m joined by Programmer, producer, writer and innovator Tim Bran. Tim has been around music and technology for nearly 30 years. Working with legends such as Julian Cope, Youth and Richard Ashcroft. He was one of the founders of Rez Rocket a piece software that allowed musicians to collaborate in real time over the internet and also been a member of highly influential dub/reggae/techno pioneers Dreadzone with his friend Greg Roberts. He’s also one half of My Riot alongside Roy Kerr. My Riot have produced and written for artists such as London Grammer, Birdy and James Morrison and have continued to be one of the most successful partnerships in the studio.
