| S3 E12 | Holiday Childhood Nostalgia …Meets Trauma | 21 Dec 2025 | 00:37:10 | |
For those who celebrate, it’s that time of year. We’re dealing with the combo of holiday childhood nostalgia …and trauma. Where does your chronic pain come from? And your chronic symptoms? It’s not your old injury. It’s not your undetectable embedded infection. It’s your trauma—and the patterns of self-abandonment your trauma caused. In this episode: 🔹 Nostalgia from my childhood Christmases. 🔹 The complex dynamics of interpersonal trauma. 🔹 Trauma isn’t what you’ve been through, it’s how it impacted you. 🔹 A core impact of trauma: it leaves you more oriented towards self-abandonment than self-attunement. 🔹 Self-abandonment causes emotional repression and chronic pain. 🔹 Self-attunement is the work of healing from trauma. 🔹 Self-attunement is the work of healing from chronic pain. 🔹 Today, we get deep into self-attunement. 🔹 …and the profound connection between self-attunement and healing chronic pain. – Find Sean: Visit My Website to: Request a Consultation for Therapy Click Here to: Ask a Question on the Podcast – Sean’s Free Email List: Join the List for Free Updates and Advice – …and you’re listening to Mindbody Medicine for Chronic Pain. Deb Malkin is a massage therapist, a hypnotist, and a pain coach. She helps people unlock the skills of pain elimination through understanding (and embodying) the neuroscience of the mind-body connection. It’s the same exciting stuff we talk about on this podcast. Deb gets it. Deb’s also active in the world of body liberation and fat liberation. She brings that mindset to her work with the Association for the Treatment of Neuroplastic Symptoms. She and our colleague Amy Schere, LCSWA spoke on anti-fat bias at the ATNS conference and, honestly, caused a bit of a stir. This is a paradigm shift. | S3 E2 | Gabor Maté, Attachment vs. Authenticity, and Chronic Pain | 12 Oct 2025 | 00:50:41
Dr. Gabor Maté is a physician in Canada. He’s an expert on addiction, childhood development, and trauma. His teachings highlight the conflict between two fundamental human needs: attachment and authenticity. (And, no. He's not actually an interview guest. We're just talking about his work.) People who struggle with chronic pain are the kinds of people who were taught somewhere along the line that we’re not truly allowed to be ourselves. We’re the kind of people who had to give up some (if not a lot) of our authenticity in order to maintain our attachments to others. Chronic pain is caused by fear of sensations in the body, fear of emotions, and fear of the true self. If you’re struggling with chronic pain, this is your invitation to tune in to your authentic self. In doing so, you’re teaching your brain and your nervous system that it’s okay to be you. It’s safe to be you. Let’s talk about it. This is going to help you. – Find Sean: Visit my website to: Request a consultation for weekly individual therapy Click here to: Ask a question on the podcast – Resources from Today’s Episode: When The Body Says No by Dr. Gabor Maté In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts by Dr. Gabor Maté The Myth of Normal by Dr. Gabor Maté – Journal Prompt: What authentic parts of YOU have you had to sacrifice in order to retain your attachment to your family, your community, and society? This is a 9.5-minute Somatic Tracking exercise. Listen now, and save it for later. Allow yourself to fully experience this one. Maybe many times over. Allow this practice to help you. Somatic tracking is most helpful when your symptoms are mild or moderate. With somatic tracking, the goal is to feel your symptoms and sensations through a lens of safety. It can be hard to feel truly safe when your symptoms are severe. That's why somatic tracking's recommended at times when symptoms are mild or moderate. But, you know you. Try this practice. Experiment with it. Remember, the goal is NOT to make the symptoms go away. The goal is to feel the symptoms and view them through a lens of safety. | S2 E1 | The "Messy Middle" & TMS Therapy with Michelle | 22 Jun 2025 | 01:13:59
Michelle's walking this path of TMS healing with us. And she's been a client in my therapy practice for about a year. She offered to share her story on the podcast today and ...what a generous offer. I'm so grateful for the wisdom and nuance and personal touch she brings to this conversation. Join us as we talk about the "messy middle," which is a Nicole Sachs term for that hard part of the work - that part where you know you have TMS but your symptoms aren't budging. Or they're not budging enough. It's frustrating and it's difficult. And it can last for quite some time. This one's for all of you who've ever asked yourself, in desperation, "why am I not better yet?" Right? Cuz that's so painful. Literally physically painful ...and, of course, emotionally painful too. This is a great conversation. Listen to it today - and save it for the future in case you need it again. Because healing takes time. And that's okay. That's normal. And Michelle and I are here with you to keep you company. You're on the right track. You got this. Michelle is also a therapist! | Trailer | Mindbody Medicine for Chronic Pain | 19 Mar 2025 | 00:02:12
My name is Sean Hershey and this is Mindbody Medicine for Chronic Pain. This podcast is an absolutely free resource for anyone who is struggling with chronic pain, chronic symptoms, or chronic conditions. This podcast is for people like me. You’ve gone through the Western medical model and it has not worked for you. Now you’ve finally found the right treatment: mindbody medicine. Even though you feel hopeless, you’re still, somehow, miraculously, hopeful. This is for you. And, I’m telling you, when it comes to chronic pain, mindbody medicine actually works. I am both therapist and client in this work. After decades of my own symptoms, I’m mostly out of chronic pain now - and I’m a total shameless work-in-progress who still isn’t “there” yet. So I bet I’m probably, in some way, kind of like you. Whether you’re just starting out on your mindbody healing path - or you’ve been at this for years, there’s something here for you. In this podcast, I cover: Pain as a danger signal, the Pain/Threat cycle, and, most importantly, the 3 parts of healing: First) healing through the Psychological work, Second) healing through the Emotional work, and Third) healing through Patiently attuning to your true self. My promise to you is that I will share clear and correct information about healing chronic pain, from my personal experience and my professional knowledge… So that you have the education you need… And, even more importantly, to provide you with the company of someone else walking this path so you don’t have to do it alone. Season 1 of this podcast will release every Sunday morning so you have an episode for each week. I’m going to start with 12 episodes in the first season. Then we’ll go from there. So find Mindbody medicine for chronic pain wherever you get your podcasts. It’s totally free to listen. I’m glad you’re here with me. www.mindbodymedicineforchronicpain.com
| S3 E7 | Sex Therapy, OCD, and Chronic Pain with Caryn Sherbet, LMSW | 16 Nov 2025 | 01:02:34 | |
Caryn Sherbet, LMSW (they/she) is a trans nonbinary therapist who specializes in OCD, chronic pain, and sexual trauma. Often, they work at the intersection of all three. Caryn talks about how patterns of avoidance tie all three together. They talk about the need to move away from "fixing" and "controlling" in order to heal. They talk about learning to tolerate existentially intolerable phenomena. They talk about making sacrifices in order to be true to yourself and true to your body. And they talk about how healing does not happen easily for everyone. Healing, sometimes, is a long, deep project, especially for people living with a lot of trauma and with a lot of fear. We talk about managing expectations in Pain Reprocessing Therapy. Caryn highlights the difficulties the trans community faces when it comes to feeling “safe.” And let me say: we, as a society, need to do better. We need to create the possibility of safety for all people. That includes trans people. On that front, we have a lot of work to do. This is a great conversation. Join us. Also, in this episode, Caryn and I discuss various therapies, most of which are referred to by acronyms. So – if you’re interested, or if you’re confused – here’s a list of the therapies we mention: PRT: Pain Reprocessing Therapy CBT: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy DBT: Dialectical Behavior Therapy IFS: Internal Family Systems Therapy ERP: Exposure and Response Prevention (treatment for OCD) ACT: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy – Find Caryn: Website: www.carynsherbettherapy.com Psychology Today: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/caryn-sherbet-new-york-ny/1043122 – Find Sean: Visit my website: Request a consultation for individual therapy Click here to: Ask a question on the podcast – Other Resources from Today’s Episode: Kristina Armenakis: www.kristinaarmenakis.com B. | S3 E6 | How To Handle Shame (Pt 2) with Ellen Ronka, LCMHC | 09 Nov 2025 | 00:44:25
Shame is an emotion, not a thought, not a belief. Shame is something to feel. The feeling of shame kicks off negative thoughts and beliefs...but what if you just treated your shame as an emotion? Then you could feel it... and let it move out. Today, Ellen Ronka teaches us how to train out of chronic shame using the same Pain Reprocessing Therapy techniques we already know. We can feel it rather than fear it. We can feel it without "believing" the story behind it. For example, you don't need to believe the "story" that your knee hurts because there's something structurally wrong with it. We know your knee actually hurts because of psychological conditioning. What if you're feeling shame because your brain is just familiar with that neural network? Not because you "did something wrong"? | S4 E6 | If You Can’t Love Yourself…(Can You Love Somebody Else?) | 15 Feb 2026 | 00:52:17
RuPaul says, “If you can’t love yourself…how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?” Today, we explore this concept in depth. The core message today: if it’s hard for you to love yourself, that is not your fault. I probably repeat that about 10 times in today’s episode. If you need to hear that - 10 times - then you’re like me. And you’re in the right place. Join us. In this Episode: 🔹 We problematize Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, and I make a case for retiring his theory to the dustbin of psychotherapy. It belongs with penis envy. In the past. 🔹 Attachment is a primary human need. Perhaps it’s THE primary human need. 🔹 Relationships are hard. That is normal. 🔹 If relationships are hard for you, you are normal. 🔹 And, if it’s hard for you to love yourself, that is not your fault. 🔹 Learning to love yourself will make your relationships better. 🔹 But, being loved by others for who you truly are - that will also make your relationship with yourself better. These things go hand-in-hand. What if your primary attachment figures didn’t appreciate you for who you truly were? Today, we explore relationships, attachment, identity development, relational needs, and we connect it all to chronic pain and to healing. – Find Sean: Visit My Website to Learn More or to Request a Consultation for Therapy TMS Treatment & Support Group Now Enrolling, Starts February 24th, 2026 – Sean’s Free Email List: Join the List for Free Updates and Advice – Click Here to Ask a Question on the Podcast – Resources Mentioned in Today’s Episode: Books by Dr. Sue Johnson: https://drsuejohnson.com/books/ Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents by Dr. Lindsay Gibson: https://www.lindsaycgibson.com/books.html – …and you’re listening to Mindbody Medicine for Chronic Pain. | S4 E5 | Bodywork and Healing Emotional Pain with Alexander Rosan | 08 Feb 2026 | 00:57:29
When Alexander Rosan became a bodyworker, he intuitively saw a connection between emotions and pain. He wasn’t trained to work with emotions, but he instinctively found his way into helping his clients process their emotions by attuning to and working with their bodies. In this Episode: 🔹 An explanation of bodywork. 🔹 Thinking past traditional training in order to connect mind and body. 🔹 “There’s something beyond just massaging the body.” 🔹 Alexander’s story about “the first time someone started crying underneath my hands.” 🔹 Alexander helps connect the world of neuroplasticity to the world of working with the body as a massage therapist and bodyworker. 🔹 “There is, ultimately and truly, nothing to be afraid of…as scary as that sounds.” This is a great conversation. It’s an excellent opening to reflect on how you might want to bring your own physical body deeper into your emotional healing process. – Find Alexander: www.alexanderrosan.com (In-Person Bodywork in Portland, OR) – Find Sean: Visit My Website TMS Treatment & Support Group Now Enrolling, Starts February 24th, 2026 – Sean’s Free Email List: Join the List for Free Updates and Advice – Click Here to Ask a Question on the Podcast – Resources from Today’s Episode: Somatic IFS by Susan McConnell – …and you’re listening to Mindbody Medicine for Chronic Pain. | Bonus | Minneapolis, Renée Good, and Alex Pretti with My Childhood Friend Claire Branigan, PhD | 01 Feb 2026 | 00:57:59
My hometown is under occupation right now. Watching this nightmare unfold is… unreal… but it’s also not necessarily shocking. Today, I talk to my childhood friend Dr. Claire Branigan about the occupation in Minneapolis. Claire is an anthropology professor at Rice University. She and I reflect on the false “safety” of the white supremacist bubble in which we grew up, and we discuss waking up to the truth of the broader cultural dynamics present in Minnesota and in the world beyond. We highlight the idea of questioning your narrative. And, of course, I make the connection to that theme as a core part of healing from chronic pain. In this Episode: 🔹 “It’s very strange to watch places you know very intimately suddenly being presented as war zones.” 🔹 We examine the narrative of a “cute,” “quaint,” and even “boring” hometown as juxtaposed with the reality. The cute/quaint narrative was never reality. It just felt true for us as children. 🔹 We give some reports about what this is like for people we know who are on the ground experiencing the fear and intimidation first-hand. 🔹 And also, “Some people really want this,” and people are saying, “What did Renée Good expect?” 🔹 We examine the question: What can you do if you’re not directly impacted and you want to be an ally to immigrants and to people who are directly impacted? 🔹 And we discuss how it’s a kind of resistance to live a good life. There’s a difference between “it’s too stressful to engage” and “I’m cognizant of what’s going on, and I’m going to choose to live.” “Don’t let the Trump administration win.” “Stephen Miller does not control my joy.” 🔹 On that note, Claire’s son is turning 1! We have stuff to celebrate, we have life to live. – If you’re able to give, please consider helping people on the front lines. As you know, it’s bad. People need help. | S4 E4 | 3 Steps to Heal Chronic Pain | 31 Jan 2026 | 01:09:41
You know you have TMS. So now, what do you do? Great question. This episode revisits the three clear steps that heal chronic pain and chronic symptoms. We deep-dive into all three. Let your brain hear this. Then, you can apply what you learn. Then…you’ll start to feel your body healing. In this Episode: 🔹 Understanding, internalizing, and believing the correct facts about chronic pain. 🔹 How to think psychologically, not physically. 🔹 Connecting your pain and your symptoms to your emotional life. 🔹 Accepting existential mystery in your healing and releasing the need to “understand” everything. 🔹 Learning how to redirect the “oh no” to “...okay.” 🔹 And, the hardest part: a thorough discussion about patiently attuning to your true self in order to heal your pain. 🔹 There are no bad parts. In today's analysis of "no bad parts," we get into some pretty extreme examples. And if you can develop empathy for a horrifying fascist, you can certainly develop empathy for yourself. – Find Sean: Visit My Website to Learn More or to Request a Consultation for Therapy Now Enrolling: TMS Treatment & Support Group Starting February 24th, 2026 – Sean’s Free Email List: Join the List for Free Updates and Advice – Click Here to Ask a Question on the Podcast – Resources Mentioned in Today’s Episode: The Way Out by Alan Gordon and Alon Ziv Mind Your Body by Nicole Sachs No Bad Parts by Dr. Richard Schwartz The Divided Mind by Dr. John Sarno Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents by Dr. Lindsay Gibson – …and you’re listening to Mindbody Medicine for Chronic Pain.
