SSP Cinema Classics 15 - Daleks' Invasion Earth - 2150AD

Saison 6 · Épisode 22

samedi 17 mai 2025Durée 01:27:30

Cinema Classics Number 15 - "We'll have to bypass Watford. The place is full of Daleks."

This week, it's exterminate! meets cinematechnique as Silver Screen Cinema Classics teams up with sister show Hit or Miss: Doctor Who for a one-time-only crossover that's bigger, louder, and more British than ever before! Join Mike, DK, and returning guest Will Templar as they journey back in time for the Technicolor mayhem of Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D., the second (and final) big-screen adventure featuring Peter Cushing’s eccentric, grandfatherly Dr. Who. But don't expect much timey-wimey tinkering — the team’s casting a cinematic eye over this lavish (by BBC standards) adaptation of the classic TV serial, and they're not pulling any punches. From the eye-popping return of the colourful, chunky, and shoutier-than-ever movie Daleks to the dystopian breakfast endorsement of Sugar Puffs, this sequel doesn’t skimp on spectacle — or shameless product placement. There’s plenty to dissect in how the film diverges from its small-screen source material, with tighter pacing, broader humour, and explosions dialled up to eleven. The gang dives into the oddly divergent tones starting with the curious case of Tom, the comic-relief copper whose Roboman clown act proves divisive to say the least. Meanwhile, genre stalwart Philip Madoc makes a memorably grim exit, gunned down by Daleks in one of the film’s starkest and most cinematically striking sequences. All the while, poor Peter Cushing finds himself strangely sidelined, with his kindly human Doctor taking something of a backseat in a story that feels more ensemble than star vehicle. Naturally, comparisons to the first Cushing film are inevitable — and thoroughly explored. Is this camp classic a cinematic regeneration worth remembering, or did the Daleks’ big-screen dreams fall into the core of the Earth? Grab your anti-Dalek bombs, stock up from the Roboman food dispenser, and join us as we head to a 2150 that looks curiously like 1966.

HoM: Doctor Who Podcast - "Victory of the Daleks" Review & More

Saison 6 · Épisode 21

dimanche 11 mai 2025Durée 01:51:07

Series 1, Episode 6 - "If he did find Dorabella she's in for one heck of a shock..."

Brace yourselves, Earthlings—it’s another Dalek-themed detour in our Whoniversal road trip! This week on Hit or Miss: Doctor Who, D.K. is off on a secret mission (possibly involving Scottish robots and Churchill), but fear not! Captain Mike is back in the host’s chair and he's brought backup. Making his triumphant return is friend of the show and Who Gameshow overlord Will Templar, who once again rolls the dice (metaphorically—we didn’t bring Monopoly Daleks). And joining the podcast for the very first time, all the way from their award-worthy appearances on Silver Screen Podcast, it’s the ultimate entertainment power couple—Michael Whaley and Rune! They might be new to Hit or Miss, but they’ve got enough charisma to fill a Dalek mothership. We kick things off with the usual Whovian origin stories—how our guests fell into the time vortex of fandom—and then hop into a Nu-Who-heavy Hit or Miss segment featuring an impossible girl, a twisty Dalek plot or two and one seriously weird hybrid creature. Then it’s full steam ahead into our main review: the often-divisive Eleventh Doctor tale, "Victory of the Daleks." Is it a bold reimagining or a tea-fuelled travesty? Are those WWII Daleks a charming callback or cheesy clunkers? And do the New Paradigm Daleks really look like intergalactic pepper pots crossed with Power Rangers? All that and more in this rollicking new episode. Spoilers and jammy dodgers guaranteed.

Welcome back, to a mind-bending, futuristic episode of Silver Screen Podcast. We’re activating our thermoptic camouflage and diving deep into the cybernetic world of 'Ghost in the Shell'! Join host Michael Wilson and returning guests Tobi and Sandy as they plug into Mamoru Oshii’s seminal anime masterpiece—no hacking required. We’ll be discussing the film’s stunning animation, philosophical depth, and the sheer influence it’s had on Hollywood’s biggest sci-fi blockbusters. SSP Cult Classics 6 - Flash Gordon (1980)

Saison 4 · Épisode 28

jeudi 3 août 2023Durée 02:18:28

D.K's Cult Classics Episode 6 - "Gordon's alive!!!" A menacing cackle echoes through the air, freak weather conditions fill the skies, a rock beat starts to pound... FLASH! AH-AHHHH! Yes the inevitable day has come, our series looking at cult film has turned it's gaze towards our Mike's personal favourite and an absolute cornerstone of the genre: 1980's Flash Gordon. D.K is hosting as always and we're joined by awesome first time guest Rune (they/them). Rune will try and get a word in and bring their relatively fresh thoughts about the film to the discussion, alongside the two old nerds who can recite every word. There's a deep dive into the making of the film, the on-set feud that led to the star being re-dubbed, the retrospective effect it's had on film and personally on our panel. And there is a LOT of talk about the "Life After Flash" documentary (Mike came with completed homework, as if it was necessary!). So strap into your rocket ship as we propel you to the planet Mongo for this in-depth super long (but hopefully entertaining) podcast examining the man who saved every one of us, from beginning to the end...? HoM: Star Trek - "Soldiers of the Empire" & more

Saison 4 · Épisode 27

dimanche 16 juillet 2023Durée 01:38:57

Series 4, Episode 6 - "Never trust a ship full of drunk Klingons." Can you believe we've hit 50 review episodes!? For this milestone we have another two-hander as Mike is joined by semi-regular guest and friend of the podcast Adrienne Park-Tucker. They'll be indulging in a lengthy "Hit or Miss" section before launching into a review of seminal Klingon story "Soldiers of the Empire". Along the way the discussions touch on overly brutal Klingons, hangover acting, super-serious aliens, ships that (apparently) resemble hair clippers, badass moments, character journeys & much more. This is our last episode before we take a small mid-season break but we will be back with the rest of this Klingon-heavy season very soon. So don't be a petaQ, enjoy this glorious episode. HoM: Star Trek - "Day of the Dove" & more

Saison 4 · Épisode 26

dimanche 9 juillet 2023Durée 01:24:38

Series 4, Episode 5 - "This alien parasite does love some LARPing." Hello again Federation, warriors of the Klingon Empire and everyone else who enjoys a good podcast. This week our Klingon-focused series continues with a deep look at the TOS episode "Day of the Dove". It's a two-hander this week as D.K is joined again by Trek neophyte and friend of the podcast Will Templar, in our continuing attempt to make a Trekkie out of him, or at least force him to watch a few episodes. No "Hit or Miss" section this week as Will can still count the number of stories he's seen on one hand (for now) but plenty of discussion on this episode, with the dual perspective of a total newbie and a seasoned Trek veteran. Our duo touch on comparisons to Doctor Who (of course), controversial 1960s attitudes, budget restrictions, Star Trek always being "woke", great guest stars, brilliant Shatner acting, iconic imagery, the first appearance of a female Klingon, decent special effects, the infamy of TOS season 3 and more. We wrap up with a stacked audience response section and our usual conclusions and scoring. So put down that magically appearing sword, avoid the hate creature (insert your own joke here) and enjoy this great episode. Apologies for the slight audio distortions at times from D.K, we've made every effort to make your listening as smooth as possible but a little glitching still remains that was unavoidable. HoM: Star Trek - "Affliction/Divergence" & more

Saison 4 · Épisode 25

dimanche 2 juillet 2023Durée 01:51:11

Series 4, Episode 4 - "Listen, these ships f*ck!" Welcome warriors to another Klingon-heavy podcast episode. This week Mike & D.K sit down with returning guest Ken Sweeney from The Comfortable Spot podcast. We talk about Ken's introduction to Trek and some of his faves, discuss shorter recent Trek seasons, his love of all things 'Enterprise' & his top episodes. We forego the usual "Hit or Miss section" this week to address the Star Trek: Prodigy situation, explain just what it's about and why we're really mad. Links to help #SaveStarTrekProdigy are below. We then jump into a review of the pivotal Klingon 2-parter, Enterprise's "Affliction" & "Divergence". We begin with some thoughts and insight into the eps from co-writer Mike Sussman, touch on the thorny subject of visual and story canon, the pitfalls of making a prequel, serialized storytelling, "will they or won't they" plots, "Speed in Space", Trek's best engineer, Klingon Uncle Phil & much more, before rounding up as always with audience thoughts and final scores. So slow down your engines, merge warp bubbles if you can and relax to enjoy this podcast that's smoother than a Klingon augment's forehead. Silver Screen Podcast - (Indiana Jones and the) Raiders of the Lost Ark Review

Saison 4 · Épisode 24

jeudi 29 juin 2023Durée 01:45:18

Episode 49 - "Indiana Jones. I always knew one day you'd come walking back through my door." We're back with another timely review. We conclude our (semi)-regular series (don't worry, we won't be gone long) with a review of the very first Indiana Jones movie, as we all prepare to dial into destiny in cinemas. Mike and D.K are joined by former Trek guest, our very own Sallah Mr. Steven "Browny" Brown. The trio will discuss whether 'The Big Bang Theory' is right that Indy has no bearing on the plot, dive into the controversy surrounding Marion's age, discuss James Bond comparisons, D.K's obsession with 'Young Indiana Jones', usage of religious iconography, brief comparisons to other entries in the franchise, the inspiration for 'Allo 'Allo, screwball comedy romantic chemistry and more. There's debate about which is the best of Harrison Ford's iconic roles, the best and worst Indiana Jones knock-offs, unconvincing background fighting and an attempt to settle once and for all which is the best film between this and 'Last Crusade'. Phew! All of that plus audience thoughts and our final conclusions and scores. Don't get caught digging in the wrong place for your Indy fix, join us here and listen to the thoughts of top... men (and Mike). Music by Timeless Journey. Saison 4 · Épisode 22

Series 4, Episode 3 - "She deserves a promotion just for sleeping with Chakotay." Welcome back Trekkies and Klingon fans, not to the bowels of Gre'thor, but to a new episode in our series exploring Klingon themed episodes. Today we actually will be travelling to the Klingon afterlife via the Voyager episode "Barge of the Dead". Hosts Mike & D.K are joined by returning guest and Cardassian Queen Lady Vean to review this Orphean episode. Along the way they'll touch on D.K's most hated episode ("It's like valium for your eyes"), unappealing Klingon ship design ("It's the winnebago from Spaceballs dude") and the merits of the character Seska ("I will also give her credit for making the Kazon interesting") amongst other things in the "Hit or Miss section". Then the review sees them sharing a mutual love for Roxann Dawson & Kate Mulgrew, D.K's reasons why Harry remained an Ensign, Vean's distaste for the "Seven of Nine Show" and so much more. We conclude, as ever, with our usual audience reviews and podcast scores. Treat yourself, it's like Sto-Vo-Kor for your ears (we can't actually promise that but it sounded cool).
