Over the course of the next five weeks, North Carolina will host at least eight high school basketball players from the class of 2025 on an official visit. It all starts this weekend (September 6) with Derek Dixon and Nik Khamenia. The other targets scheduled to visit over the next five weeks are Brayon Mullins, AJ Dybantsa, Eric Reibe, Isaiah Denis, Acaden Lewis, and Niko Bundalo. Will UNC be able to secure a commitment from any of these young men? It would be their first in the class of 2025. 

As has been well documented, Carolina didn’t release a depth chart ahead of the first game because Minnesota didn’t either. But now – we finally have the Tar Heel depth chart to play with and dissect. As expected, Conner Harrell sits atop the quarterback chart, ahead of Jacolby Criswell. Also, what’s going on with the ACC early? It’s a big opportunity for Carolina.

It’s Labor Day and that means it’s time to consider the question: Who’s doing work for UNC this season – both men’s basketball-wise and football-wise? For basketball, Drake Powell will need to do work in terms of bringing his varied capabilities to the team. Elliot Cadeau needs to do work with his leadership. Additionally, the frontcourt trio of Ven-Allen Lubin, Jae’lyn Withers, and Tyzhaun Claude need to do work to show that Carolina is physical. On the football field, first and foremost, Conner Harrell has to do work, now that the team is presumptively in his control. Additionally, the D-Line needs to do work, as do their counterparts in the secondary. Early returns on the defense are encouraging, but it will take more than just a week. The win over Minnesota helps set a winning tone throughout the season. It’s time for the Heels to build on that and figure out just exactly what they’ve got.

The North Carolina Tar Heels come into the 2024-25 college basketball season with strong certainty at both point guard and shooting guard – Elliot Cadeau and RJ Davis. But for the first time in the Hubert Davis era, there are big questions marks all over the rest of the starting lineup. Coach Davis could employ a multitude of trios to fill out his starting five. Is Jalen Washington the five? Will one of the freshmen, Ian Jackson or Drake Powell, slot in at the three? Will Cade Tyson’s floor-stretching ability earn him the start at the four?

Harrison Ingram is firmly in the 2024 NBA Draft (as far as we currently know), but what if he didn’t hear what he wanted and ultimately returned to Carolina? Assuming that Cliff Omoruyi also committed, UNC would be absolutely loaded. A likely starting lineup of Elliot Cadeau, RJ Davis, Cade Tyson, Ingram, and Omoruyi. Not to mention a stocked bench that includes Seth Trimble, Jalen Washington, Jae’lyn Withers, Ian Jackson, Drake Powell, Zayden High, and James Brown.

Speaking of Withers, he is officially back. That was the expectation all along, but Jon Rothstein confirmed it on Thursday. Omoruyi is currently on his visit to Chapel Hill – so go where you go, do what you do.

RJ Davis is returning to North Carolina for a 5th year. He’s already accomplished so much in a Tar Heel uniform, but what else can he do individually and at the team level to continue cementing his legacy? The NBA Draft Early Entry list came out on Tuesday and while it’s interesting to look at the names on it; it’s equally as intriguing to see what names are NOT on the list. This year that included RJ Davis and Adou Thiero. Davis’ absence is further confirmation of his return to Chapel Hill (although it’s still yet to be reported by he or the UNC). Thiero’s absence is notable because the prevailing understanding was that Carolina would have to wait until the Kentucky transfer went through the NBA Draft Process.

Carolina’s search for a big man appears to fully centered on Rutgers transfer Cliff Omoruyi, who has been visiting Alabama early this week. There was fear that the Tide would lock up his commitment and Omoruyi would never visit Chapel Hill. However, the good news is that Omoruyi will indeed take his trip to Carolina, and confirmed that it will be his final visit.

On Monday, Tennessee transfer Jonas Aidoo committed to Arkansas and John Calipari, meaning that North Carolina’s only remaining transfer portal target (currently) at the center position is Rutgers transfer Cliff Omoruyi. With Armando Bacot out the door, UNC needs a strong replacement in the post. Omoruyi is currently on a visit to Alabama. What happens if UNC misses on both Aidoo AND Omoruyi? Belmont transfer and rising junior SF Cade Tyson has committed to the North Carolina Tar Heels. He becomes the first commit for UNC in this cycle (save for Seth Trimble pulling out of the portal to return). Tyson is the brother of former Clemson Tiger Hunter Tyson and will have two years of eligibility for Hubert Davis. 

The Tar Heels still have three scholarships to utilize for 2024-25. How will Hubert Davis and company elect to utilize them?
