342. Get Out of the Comparison Cage

When you compare yourself-- you are trapping yourself in a box.  It is "normal to do, but it's not helpful.  There will always be someone better than you.  Technology is constantly being changed and upgraded.  Records are being broken.

You are an inviddual-- you can only compare yourself to yourself.

Notice when you want to compare yourself to other moms-- What are they better at? What are you jealous of?  Why does it matter to you? What action can you take?  Focus back on what you can work on.  Dig into it-- and find the smallest step.

 

Somedays you won't be better than yesterday-- that's normal too.  Be kind to yourself. Let yourself be more honest.  Be softer.  Be more you.

Partners in PROMISE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the rights of military children in special education and the military's Exceptional Family Member Program.   Jennifer Barnhill is the Chief Operating Officer and Lead Researcher for Partners in PROMISE. In addition to her role at Partners in PROMISE, Jennifer is a freelance reporter and researcher who writes a monthly column covering military family policy issues for military.com.   Michelle Norman is the founder and Executive Director for PIP. She is a Navy spouse of over 25 years and mother of a 18-year-old daughter with cerebral palsy and many other medical diagnoses. After years of successfully advocating and winning multiple legal cases to ensure her daughter receives the minimum education required by law, Michelle observed that military children with special needs and their families were in need of an advocate. She founded PIP along with four other military mothers to help close this gap.

Solo Show with Christy sharing that we all have feelings and that it's important to show our kids how to label them and how we process them.  Feel don't conceal.  Our kids want the best for us just like we want the best for them.

 

Are you unsure how to label feelings more than glad, sad, and mad? Check out this feelings wheel. 

There are zero ways for you to be a perfect mom, so be honest and fail a little better every time.  Your kids benefit from watching you repair their relationship with them.  You are in charge of your relationship with your kids and yourself.  Show them what it means to live with self-compassion and a full spectrum of feelings. 

 

 

Self-Care:  Take 90 seconds and lie down on your bed or the floor.  Don't hold your phone while you do this.  Lay down and be.  Check-in with yourself-- you are valuable and loved. 

 

Family Fun:  Have a dance party or freeze dance game where people dance like a dog getting out of the water.  Research shows shaking releases muscular tension, burns excess adrenaline, calms the nervous system and helps neutralize stress.
