From Burnout to Balance: How to Protect Your Wellbeing and Career Show Notes

In this heartfelt and personal episode of Jess Get Hired, host Jessica Fiesta George shares her recent thyroid cancer diagnosis and upcoming surgery, bringing awareness to the importance of listening to our bodies. Reflecting on her journey through a whirlwind of diagnosis and surgery prep, Jessica emphasizes why busy professionals must prioritize their health and well-being, even when ambition tempts them to push forward.

Episode Highlights

  • Facing Health Challenges: Jessica’s personal journey with thyroid cancer, from diagnosis to surgery, has reminded her—and now us—how essential it is to pay attention to our bodies. With no obvious symptoms, Jessica only discovered the issue after thorough check-ups, underscoring why routine health assessments are crucial.
  • Recognizing Burnout: Revisit episode 88 for a deep dive into the signs and symptoms of burnout, a state Jessica knows well. For mid-career professionals, the demands of work, home life, and personal ambitions often pile up, making it difficult to recognize burnout until it’s too late.

3 Steps from Burnout to Balance

  1. Redefine Success: Let go of the belief that success is about constantly working harder or longer hours. Jessica shares how redefining success and focusing on sustainable achievements can prevent burnout.
  2. Set Non-Negotiable Boundaries: Learn how to create firm boundaries that protect your time and energy. Jessica describes how she’s committed to spending family time without interruptions, and her new puppy Luna is an adorable reminder to stay present in the moment.
  3. Build Resilience with Routines: Small daily routines anchor us during turbulent times. Whether it’s a morning coffee, journaling, or a ten-minute walk, simple habits can build resilience, grounding us even when work or life feels overwhelming.

Jessica’s health journey serves as a wake-up call for all high-achieving professionals to look after their mental and physical health while still pursuing their career goals. This episode is a reminder that balance is a form of success and that sometimes slowing down is the best way to move forward.

Tune in to learn how you can transition from burnout to balance and create a more fulfilling, sustainable career journey.
