S16 E9: Segs Jennings
Saison 16 · Épisode 9
vendredi 14 novembre 2025 • Durée 01:27:02
When Segs and I were messaging trying to organise this podcast, Segs wrote something like “we’ve got lots to talk about…the world is changing what feels like day by day”. Now with my meticulous research – OK, it was just by luck! - I was reading back at an interview Segs, Ruffy and me did a couple of years ago just after they’d done their first tour of Spain. And we were talking about movements getting big and Segs said “The bigger the movement gets it has to get okayed by the government and the it becomes “you can demonstrate here and here and here between this time and that time, don’t make too much noise and we won’t kettle you”.
And that was when Sunak – a Tory - was Prime Minister.
Fast forward to now and talk about speed of change - we have a Labour government who are now probably more aggressive in shutting down dissent and protest than anyone in my memory.
So, talking about the speed of change in the world, there you go…..
Segs and Ruts DC are producing some of the most passionate and accomplished music that’s entirely in tune with the groundbreaking music from The Ruts and just as relevant as The Ruts music was and still is. Having them around, producing great music, taking a stand against the injustices, governments and corporations that blight our world, and doing it all with an unflinching, unwavering message of “people unite … never surrender” is, I think, one of life’s victories that we should honour.

S16 E8: Luca Vergano
Saison 16 · Épisode 8
vendredi 7 novembre 2025 • Durée 55:36
One area of my being that I’ve been working on is not feeling the necessity to be ultra-prepared for things. Things like my podcast episodes. I’ve been able to trace this back to when I was a kid – long story which I won’t bore you with. I think this is tied into this obsession that a lot of society has with perfectionism – don’t make a mistake, be ready for all angles, get it right first time – when really, human beings are far from perfect and we don’t need to dig too far into the newspaper headlines to see many examples of this.
So, I took the very brave (for me) step of doing something that’s really important for so many reasons – getting out of my comfort zone. So, I have avoided any research on my guest today, other than he is a co-founder of the band Afrodream who have recently released their second and totally inspiring album called Guiss Guiss, a beautifully uplifting, diverse and rich mix of rhythms, instrumentation and vocals at the core. It’s really, really special.
This conversation with one of the founders of Afrodream, Luca Vergano, was perfect - fun, informative and inspiring.

S15 E9: James Johnston
Saison 15 · Épisode 9
vendredi 8 août 2025 • Durée 58:54
It’s fascinating to look at the entire creative evolution of an artist - how they started and where they are now. Of course, looking at what’s been going on in their life, can feel quite invasive and voyeuristic, like prying into the inner sanctum of life, but hey, all in the name of research!
Music and art (although I’m by no means an expert) often feels subjective and open to interpretation and honestly, for me, I love it when I’m challenged to think about what it means to me.
This brings me on to relatability. Perhaps it’s now an overused word that has been diluted of its relevance and meaning.
But is it important for an artist to create work that its audience will find relatable in some way?
Will it help the audience make their own interpretations if they can relate to it?
Or is speaking with truth and honesty equally or more important?
And what about good old fashioned escapism?
What does that connection between artist and audience look like?
I don’t know why the work of my guest today makes me ask these questions! Maybe it’s because his work often feels like it is accessing what’s in the back of his mind but created in a way that feeds my own interpretations and connects in a way that tunes into my own empathy.
His art was described as “loose and raw that straightaway imprints itself on the human imagination”. This is interesting because it is the consistency of that rawness - and honesty - that also runs through his music which again gets my imagination fired up.
I hope you enjoy this fascinating chat with James Johnston, who came to prominence in the early 90's with Gallon Drunk and has also played with PJ Harvey, The Bad Seeds, Faust and Lydia Lunch as well as releasing solo and collaborative work of his own. He started painting in 2017 which is just going from strength to strength.

S6 E8: Jordan GCZ
Saison 6 · Épisode 8
lundi 11 avril 2022 • Durée 51:04
Jordan Czamanski has been firmly producing music from the leftfield of electronica for over 20 years with collaborations as Juju and Jordash, Mountain High & many others. Part jazz, part acid, part ambient, part psychedelic, part intergalactic, part deep house, wholly experimental and wholly avant-garde which all goes to show that thankfully I have no idea how to label his music.
He's a true improviser who makes us discard genres and think for ourselves about what the music means to us.
His debut solo album, My Brain's Brain, is out now on Terrence Dixon's phenomenal Minimal Detroit label.

S6 E7: Sarah Shook
Saison 6 · Épisode 7
lundi 4 avril 2022 • Durée 58:52
This is a fabulous convo, digging into the importance of teaching and learning emotional intelligence from a young age to improve our lives and heal society, and talking about Sarah's relationships with their parents, childhood experiences, self awareness, identity, empathy, and their life as a single parent, activist, musician and awesome human.
Sarah formed their current band, Sarah Shook and The Disarmers, in 2014 and their current album, Nightroamer, is just magnificent - attitude, tunes, emotion and bags of self awareness. Think Johnny Cash, Joan Jett, Mike Ness, Wanda Jackson and Jonny Two Bags.
And I'm chuffed that they wore their new hoodie!

S6 E6: Emma Lee MC
Saison 6 · Épisode 6
lundi 28 mars 2022 • Durée 59:38
I first heard Emma Lee MC's own brand of hip hop just a few months ago and was blown away with her dynamic blend of poetry, emotionally intelligent, positional rhymes and minimalist beats. Old skool, yet futuristic hip hop. Right up my street.
Wow, I enjoyed this episode so much. Just sit back and listen to the wisdom, empathy, warmth, humour and self awareness of such a wonderful human.
Born in Uganda & raised in Harlem, NYC, Emma Lee's been creating & performing since a youth, she's shared tracks/stages with the likes of Kool Keith, Nile Rodgers, DMC of Run DMC, M1 of Dead Prez & Patti Labelle.

S6 E5: EERA
Saison 6 · Épisode 5
lundi 21 mars 2022 • Durée 42:30
Last year, EERA (Anna Lena Bruland), released her fabulous latest record, Speak….in her own words "a search for a balance in life, acknowledging myself, and being proud of who I am. To become braver and more confident, and stop questioning so much. Accept and move on instead. This album is more who I am.”
In this episode, we talk about the emotions of looking back at, and performing, earlier work, classical training, evolving as a person, looking ahead - not backwards - as an artist, giving advice to herself, anxieties, self acceptance, not growing up, discovering life and the uncertainties of a musician's life.
Fascinating, deep stuff from a progressive thinker and wonderful musician, and a big shout out for Maya, Anna Lena's dog, who quite rightly deserved to play some part of the show!

S6 E4: Carol Hodge
Saison 6 · Épisode 4
lundi 14 mars 2022 • Durée 01:04:19
Carol Hodge exemplifies what punk rock really means - empathy, self awareness, respect, humour, uniqueness, tolerance and understanding.
This is a brilliant convo. I thoroughly enjoyed being enlightened with Carol's world view and experiences. There's something for everyone in here, especially those who have battled with life - that's pretty much all of us, right?
To quote Carol:
“Always waiting for things to get better, for the perfect time, but it doesn’t exist. Change is gradual, one day a time. Progress has been made, if you take the time to stop and look back, you’ll see it. "
She's an amazing songwriter, performer and pianist, crafting searing melodies and poignant lyrics that will make you lurch from joy to heartbreak. She also performs as a keyboardist/backing vocalist Ryan Hamilton, has also guested with Ginger Wildheart, Headsticks and The Membranes. She also sings and plays keys with Steve Ignorant and I can't wait to hear more of this!
(And she has the ability to "knock out a bloody tune" (© Pete Postlethwaite) - have a laugh at my cringe as Carol clarifies that she is NOT, and never has been, a brass band.)

S6 E3: James Chapman (MAPS)
Saison 6 · Épisode 3
lundi 7 mars 2022 • Durée 47:25
Calling all introverts with a passion and aspiration to create - this is for you.
James Chapman is the creative wizard that is MAPS. He is producing some stunning, ambitious, symphonic soundscapes, inspired by melody and emotion and supported by his knowledge of and training in classical. It really is very powerful.
He’s also opened himself up to the worlds of remixes and reworks of artists such as A Certain Ratio, Depeche Mode, Kid Moxie, Polly Scattergood, Goldfrapp, The Killers, Moby and Bombay Bicycle Club, remodelling songs so that they turn into kinda living organisms.
Take a listen to James' story, there's something in it for all of us.

S6 E2: Ian Devaney
Saison 6 · Épisode 2
lundi 28 février 2022 • Durée 59:40
Ian Devaney is the lead singer of Nation of Language, the wonderful Brooklyn trio who are creating a modern day synth wave infused with 70’s and ‘80’s scapes. Their songs speak of personal experiences, vulnerability and humility.
One thing that resonated with me before even speaking to Ian was their collective and individual resilience of mind to get through an incredibly uncertain music landscape to where they are now which is two really excellent LP’s, "Introduction, Presence" and 2021's "A Way Forward".
Ian is a multi-instrumentalist, creates the band's artwork, and is also part of Machinegum - an artist collective with Delicate Steve, Chris Egan, Martin Bonventre, and Erin Victoria Axtel and Ian's pal, The Strokes' Fab Moretti, who has helped Ian with self belief and expanding his creative mindset.
Thanks Ian, this was a really great convo!
