95. #AskWeightMD: Empowering Your Child, Navigate Food Without Shame

lundi 19 septembre 2022Durée 22:11

Leave Health Bite a Feedback.Click This Link.

How do you address wealth gain and/or obesity issues in your family without making everyone feel like they’re someone that needs to be fixed?

As we celebrate National Pediatric Obesity Awareness Month this September, it is of much relevance that we talk about the issue of obesity, especially as the numbers rise to their highest at present.

More often than not, we tend to unconsciously project our own wounds on our children, which usually leads to a negative approach to building a healthy relationship with them and food. So in this episode, Dr. Adrienne aims to help you get your head in the right place so you can help yourself, your children, and your family as a whole in a way that is empowering them towards change.

In this episode, Dr. Adrienne does a follow-up on last week’s episode to share tools and strategies you can use as you have conversations in your family around the topic of obesity.

What you will learn from this episode:

●       Learn tips/strategies on how to avoid having a negative mindset and behavior as you and your family work towards creating positive health and wellbeing at home;

●       Understand why you should be mindful of your own insecurities, wounds, and actions as you approach your children in addressing weight and/or obesity issues; and

●       Find out why you should see the issue and the act of addressing it as a process, something that takes time, and not as something that needs to be fixed

“Teach them about resilience. Teach them about persistence. And remind them that they don't need to hit the mark 100% of the time. They don't need to be perfect in order to be effective.” – Dr. Adrienne Youdim

Key Takeaways:

“When you act from a place of fear, you cannot act from a place of intention. And more importantly, you project that fear and anxiety onto your child.” – Dr. Adrienne Youdim

“Manage your expectations. Don't expect this thing to be fixed right away. It's not a thing to be fixed; it is a process that you need to engage in as a family.” – Dr. Adrienne Youdim

“Eat as much of the good stuff so that there's less room, less desire for the things that don't serve you.” – Dr. Adrienne Youdim

94. Childhood Obesity: Parental Intervention without All the Food and Body Drama with Wendy Schofer

lundi 12 septembre 2022Durée 00:44

Leave Health Bite a Feedback.Click This Link.

September is National Childhood Obesity month, and a perfect time to have this week's guest, Dr. Wendy Sofer. She's a pediatrician and a certified health and wellbeing coach.

And she's the founder of Family and Focus, a program she created for parents who are worried about weight at home, their weight, and their kid's weight as well. She helps them shift the focus of the scale to create healthier relationships with the food body, and with the whole family.

Again, this work could not be more important now as childhood obesity rates have dramatically risen in the last several years. I discussed in a prior podcast about the change in weight in our kids during the pandemic, the statistics show that 19% of our children ages two through 19 were considered to have excess weight in August of 2019. And that went up toy 22.4% one year later.

And of course, this is associated with metabolic consequences like type two diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol in our children, as well as psychosocial complications like depression.

So tune into my conversation now with Dr. Wendy for a shift in the narrative around her children's weight, and a focus on lifelong health and well-being that will serve you and your family.

What you will learn from this episode:

  • Tips to help your kids develop a healthy relationship with food
  • Why it is important for your kid to have a healthy relationship with food that doesn't feel restrictive?
  • What does parental influence have to do with your kid’s eating behavior
  • How the emergence of parent-child conflicts about food over time and the influence of parents' communication strategies and feeding practices

“Kids push back [healthy eating habits] and sneak things, into their rooms because they're afraid of losing it. Because so much of the messaging has been about removing [and restricting] food and nobody wants to have things taken away from them.” - Dr. Wendy Sofer

Tips To Help Your Kids Develop a Healthy Relationship With Food

  • Ask yourself, what can we add? Instead of what can I restrict.
  • Practice meal planning.
  • Add structure to meal time to avoid a feeding frenzy.

91. Obesity, Nutrition, and Food in the News

lundi 22 août 2022Durée 13:02

Leave Health Bite a Feedback.Click This Link.

Even when topics of obesity, nutrition, and food always show up in the news, still, for some reason, these topics are often misrepresented.

In this episode, Dr. Adrienne starts a new segment to review recent news about obesity, food, and nutrition. Here, she talks about a) the new FDA-approved medication for diabetes called tirzepatide which also has a positive impact on weight loss, b) pandemic weight gain, how it still affects us now, and what we can do about it, and c) the work that the Women’s Preventive Services Initiative does, especially on the prevention of weight gain in midlife for women.

What you will learn from this episode:

●       Find out how the new medication for diabetes called tirzepatide helps not only in the treatment of type 2 diabetes but also in weight loss;

●       Recognize that there is a true and clear physiological link between stress, anxiety, and difficult emotions and excess weight, which have greatly contributed to the increase in cases of weight gain during the pandemic; and

●       Understand why women in midlife should start seeking counseling and guidance directed towards weight gain

“Let's not wait until we have gained weight or excessive weight in order to seek counseling and guidance to make the change. This is really important because prevention is key.”

– Dr. Adrienne Youdim

Valuable Free Resource:

Look at your weight as a data point. Just like blood pressure; just like temperature and heart rate.

●       Don't have judgment about it.

●       Don't use it as a character assassination.

●       Instead, use that number in an actionable way, not to judge ourselves, not to discriminate against ourselves, but to use it as a tool towards motivating behavior change and greater health.

If you are a woman who is currently in your 40s to 60s, start seeking counseling, screening, and preventive services directed towards weight gain now.

●       A little tip: food, movement, and sleep – all three of these are critical to maintaining healthy weight in the midlife.
