| Miriam Marciano- Dressing Your Body Based on Body Shape - Diet Culture or Not? | 13 Oct 2021 | 00:50:54 | |
Today's episode with Miriam Marciano - is pretty much packed with information and insight. If you know me by now- you see that I am much more interested in speaking out a topic and fleshing it out then saying my one and only opinion. I don't really work like that and nor does this podcast. Miriam and I had so many fun, interesting things we wanted to cover! Miriam is a personal stylist - so right off the bat you may think of her as someone super materialistic. You might have your ideas about her and her business. That she, like many other business in the beauty industry, are just praying on our insecurity's. This is the opposite of what Miriam is, what she stands for and what her brand represents. Miriam is here to help you find clothes that fit you well and that you can feel beautiful and confident in. We all struggle with questions of self worth. Maybe we have tied our self worth to our weight or our business, or ANYTHING, these are fundamental things that we must explore in our lives. Miriam and I sort of unpacked that here on this episode. A word from Miriam: As the founder of Miriam Marciano Styling and SAMI NY Clothes, I help women look amazing and feel confident in their clothes. Thank you for being here! | Matana Jacobs - How to Use Your Mental Health Struggles to Help Others. | 24 Aug 2021 | 01:14:21
In today's episode of Get INTUIT with Gila, I had a very interesting and powerful conversation with Matana Jacobs. As Matana explains in the episode, she was never someone who struggled with anxiety/depression until she was stuck in bed and completely debilitated from it. Matana definitely got knocked down but she also 100% got back up again and made meaning out of her pain. She is the host of the Hope to Recharge Podcast - where she speaks about her mental health struggles and provides support and resources for others. | Sarah Chana Radcliffe - how does food protect us? | 28 Jul 2021 | 00:36:07
In today's episode, I spoke with Sarah Chana Radcliffe about the overlap between Intuitive Eating and what she sees in her psychology practice. Their is definitely a huge overlap between people who are struggling with binge eating and the concept of "self loathing." People use food because they are feeling so badly about themselves and the food matches the mood. People may also use food to protect them from the pain they may be feeling. This coping mechanism could have began in childhood and the adult now has no recollection of how and why it started, but it is very much apart of their adult life. Sarah Chana and I obviously tackle these issues from different angles and it is really interesting to hear about it! Enjoy the show! Sarah Chana Radcliffe is a psychologist in private practice in Toronto Canada, counseling parents, couples and individuals. Mrs. Radcliffe is the author of the HarperCollins Publications “Raise Your Kids without Raising Your Voice” and “The Fear Fix,” as well as 7 books on Jewish family life and emotional well-being, including her most recent release “Better Behavior Now!” Sarah Chana is a weekly columnist for the Family First section of the internationally distributed Mishpacha Magazine. In conjunction with Jewish Workshops, she has produced numerous webinar classes on parenting, marriage, anxiety and stress management, and she currently runs a live, ongoing weekly family-life webinar series called “The Family Circle.” Sarah Chana provides daily tools for parenting, family life and emotional well-being on her Facebook and Instagram Parenting Pages, as well as through her Daily Parenting Posts Email List. | Episode 26: The nutritional prospective of an Eating Disorder with Dina Cohen, MS, RDN, CEDRD-S | 08 Jun 2021 | 00:28:58
In today's episode, I interviewed Dina Cohen. I specifically wanted to interview Dina because, well, firstly, she is extremely knowledgeable in her field. She has guided me along my path many times. I think it is important for the general public to understand the nutritional side effects of an eating disorder. Eating disorders are extremely complex and multifaceted, often needing the support of a team to be treated. We need to understand that eating disorders are not something we can take lightly and the signs and symptoms should be something to look out for. Especially in today's diet centric society, we must educate the public and the dangers of this disorder. I hope you enjoy the episode. This is a heavier topic than my usual interviews. I think it is a topic that needs to be talked about in our orthodox community. Dina Cohen, MS, RDN, CEDRD-S is a nutrition therapist who specializes in the treatment of eating disorders, chronic dieting, women’s health, and pediatric nutrition. She is the founder of EatWellSoon, a nutrition counseling practice in Lakewood, NJ dedicated to helping individuals and families develop lifelong healthy habits and a positive relationship with food. In today's episode- I spoke with Rivka Alphi about her journey to Intuitive Eating and how she had to tweak it when she was diagnoses with gestational diabetes. Gentle nutrition is part of Intuitive Eating but it gets tricky when we have been stuck in diet culture for so long. A bit about Rivka: I’m a Jewish Mom, enjoying Hashem’s world one avocado at a time. Born and bred city girl, with the heart of a country girl. | Let's get personal: How do husbands really feel about Intuitive Eating? | 02 Jun 2021 | 00:55:50
In today's episode, I finally got my husband Ami to come on. We had discussed many times recording a podcast. Ami is not a shy person at all but he is discerning where he puts himself out there. He also may not realize my style of producing content- I am not a perfectionist at all and I am highly aware of the ability to be paralyzed to produce content if it's not perfect. I find the best podcasts are the one's where we just start recording and let the conversation flow. Ami has been along this entire Intuitive Eating journey and we just had a nice, open conversation about it. Ami actually really enjoyed coming on the podcast and he will hopefully be back! In the next few episodes, I will be interviewing people who are more involved in my personal life instead of just my professional life. There will still be plenty of Intuitive Eating and self growth content here so please come along for the ride! All questions and comments are welcomed! If you'd like to make peace with food and reject the diet mentality, be sure to go to my website www.gilaglassberg.com and sign up for a free 20 minute clarity call. Don't forget to subscribe to the podcast and share it with those who can benefit have a great day!
| Ep 59: Dealing with Grief and Loss in Real Time: Just Me and My Grief Story | 06 May 2021 | 00:21:37 | |
In today's episode - I really just want to show up. I can't continue on as usual when 45 people died. I can't put my grief aside in the midst of communal grief. My heart literally feels broken in two and I felt compelled to share a bit of my own grief story and what helped me in those very real moments. All respectful feedback is welcome and if I said or did anything that felt offensive, please educate me as well. Wishing my deepest sense of condolences to all those who have lost someone - a child, a spouse, a chosson, a friend, a neighbor, another jew.
| EP 58: Jessica Setnick: As humans, we can all relate to eating problems because we are all eaters. | 28 Apr 2021 | 00:58:20 | |
The first thing I said to Jessica when she signed into the zoom call is "Wow, I feel like I am speaking to a celebrity." And its true. Jessica Setnick is well known in the eating disorder field because her work is extremely thorough and up to date. I loved speaking with her on how she came to this field and it was much different then I expected. Jessica shared so much of herself in this episode and I appreciated every minute of it. Jessica's approach to treating eating disorders is unique because she really humanizes the experience of struggling with eating problems and body image problems. On some level, in 2021, I think we are all assaulted with messages about the way we SHOULD eat and the way our body SHOULD look. Jessica's messages are important for everyone because we are all in this together. Like Jessica says, "we are all eaters." Jessica Setnick, MS, RD, CEDRD-S, is known to dietitians around the world as an expert in eating disorder nutrition counseling. She has worked in every level of eating disorder care and education for 22 years as a dietitian, speaker and consultant. Her signature training workshop for health professionals, Eating Disorders Boot Camp™, has been attended by over 2000 dietitians since 2003. She is the author of The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Pocket Guide to Eating Disorders and other books. In 2012, Jessica founded IFEDD, the International Federation of Eating Disorder Dietitians, which has now grown to 800 members worldwide. Through IFEDD and the Eating Disorder Coalition, Jessica advocates for better access to care for individuals with eating disorders and ending insurance company discrimination and harmful stereotypes. In 2019, Jessica shared her decades of public speaking experience in A Dietitian's Guide to Professional Speaking: Expert Advice for Pitching, Presenting & Getting Paid!, and she is currently working on a new book, The Counseling Dietitian’s Big Book of Answers: Cures for the Questions that Keep You up at Night. Jessica’s passion is helping dietitians in all practice areas feel competent supporting the individuals with dysfunctional eating who are in their care. | EP 55: Karen Koren - The Journey Through Intuitive Eating | 23 Mar 2021 | 01:19:15
In today's episode of Get INTUIT with Gila, I have a great discussion with Karen Koren about my own journey through Intuitive Eating. Over the years, we have bonded over this topic and we both have a podcast platform. My goal is to continue to spread this message all across the world because we can't go on believing the lies diet culture tells us. Karen Koren is an informal Jewish educator who has been teaching children, teens, and women for the past ten years in the Great Neck community. Although she was raised by traditional Persian parents, she attended public school during her formative years and didn’t take an interest in Judaism until college. Her curiosity grew when she went on one of the first ever Birthright Israel trips back in 2002. From that point on she realized there was more to life than the bubble she was raised in. She then made it her mission to inspire people in her community to connect with their Jewish roots. Not only did she recruit close to 200 people to visit Israel, she also served as Madricha on three separate occasions. Graduating from Queens College with a BA in Media Studies, Karen began her career working for MTV with the dream of becoming a VJ. Yes thats a video jockey for all you millennials .That all changed when she realized that her spiritual journey was taking a backseat. She then left to pursue something more meaningful to her, working with Jewish organizations such as Hadassah and Aish HaTorah. Today, you can find Karen giving classes and lectures in her community to ladies of all ages, where she infuses Jewish wisdom with a personal twist. Three years ago, she launched a program for young ladies that facilitates important discussions and incorporates fun activities to enhance self-esteem, body image, teamwork, and girl empowerment. Her program “Soul Circles” is featured at summer camps and schools alike. This initiative was inspired by her daughter, who exemplifies confidence and beauty while proudly displaying her Alopecia to the world. As such, she’s a staunch advocate of #alopeciaawareness. Karen is also a certified Kallah teacher and relationship coach, offering private or group classes. She made a name for herself by creating “60 Second Parsha” videos on her Instagram @coach.KK, catering to the short attention-span of users. Her goal is to empower others, as every lesson is short, sweet, and to the point; an ideal way for this generation to connect, even the slightest bit. She lives in Great Neck, NY with her husband and four children. | EP 52: Rochelle Garfield - Author of Out of the Shadow - Raising Eating Disorder Awareness and Encouraging us to Share our Story. | 24 Feb 2021 | 00:35:14
In today's episode of Get INTUIT with Gila, I speak with Rochelle Garfield. Rochelle Garfield is a speech/language pathologist, photographer and dyslexia lecturer. When she has free time, she enjoys inline skating. She lives in Houston, Texas with her husband and six awesome kids. She is now jumping into the writing world with her debut novel, OUT OF THE SHADOW. It was so important for me to bring Rochelle on for so many reasons. Firstly, her book was absolutely incredible. In fact I shared it with my friend this weekend and she finished the book in one day. I am so glad to hear that people are openly speaking about eating disorders in the orthodox Jewish world. Speaking about eating disorders does not cause an eating disorder, in fact, it gives space and safety to those who are struggling. Rochelle is open about what inspired her to write this story, losing her aunt to an eating disorder as well as struggling with her relationship around food as well. I myself also love to write and I wanted to hear what it was like to actually get a book published. The process is fascinating as you will hear. Enjoy the show! -Gila Glassberg, MS, RDN, CDN, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor If you are ready to make peace with food and never say diet again, check out my website www.gilaglassberg.com and apply for a free 20 minute clarity call. | EP 51: Health at Every Size from a Family Doctor: Miriam Segura Harrison MD, IBCLC | 04 Feb 2021 | 00:48:03
In today's episode of Get INTUIT with Gila, I speak with Miriam Segura Harrison. I was so excited to have her on the podcast because Miriam is a family doctor and she practices through the lens of Health at Every Size. I for one, don't know any doctors who practice through this lens so I was so excited to find her. We discussed the famous questions: Can we obtain health outcomes from joyful movement and gentle nutrition without changing our weight at all? How can you practice Intuitive Eating if you NEED to lose weight for health reasons? Can you really be fat and healthy? I was happy to hear that Miriam isn't really getting push back from her clients, patients are relieved when Miriam brings up Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size. And please remember, weight is not a behavior. We need to shift our focus from things we can't control (our weight), to things we can control partly (our behaviors). Miriam mentioned these two great resources: http://fatosphere.blogspot.com/ and the Fat Torah Project Feel free to contact Miriam at Mbs613@gmail.com I am recruiting for an upcoming Intuitive Eating Course/Support Group. This is over the course of 8 weeks, but we will be meeting live every other week. Each session is about 1 hour long. They are recorded and you will have access to them after year class. Everyone would be in a private what's app chat so I will be sending journaling prompts and/or check in prompts to see how everything is going and if anyone needs extra support. I'd like to assign accountability buddy's as well to help with implementing habit change. I take some insurances (Aetna, Cigna, blue cross blue shield, emblem health and united healthcare only the empire plan). The fee for this course is $275 - this is a beta course so this is at a discounted rate. Also because I will be recording the classes and selling it afterwards as a self paced course. -Gila Glassberg, MS, RDN, CDN, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor If you are ready to make peace with food and never say diet again, check out my website www.gilaglassberg.com and apply for a free 20 minute clarity call. | EP 50! Haley Goodrich, RD, LDN, CEDRD-S - The Journey to Real Health and Entrepreneurship | 27 Jan 2021 | 00:41:52
I really enjoyed my conversation with Haley Goodrich, RD, LDN, CEDRD-S. It's really hard to get the RD credential, but Haley went above and beyond and got her CEDRD(Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian). The extra S means that she can actually supervise other dietitians to get this CEDRD credential. In this episode, Haley and I went on a journey through her life and how we chose the career path that she chose. These are some interesting questions to ask yourself when you are unpacking your own diet culture history. Did you grow up with a food neutral home. Were you allowed to have ice cream? Pancakes? Do you have thin privilege? Is your personality more Type A? Are you going through any type of transition? And if you have chosen the career path of nutrition/dietetics - ask yourself these questions too - to make sure that nutrition hasn't become your career just so that you can learn more disordered eating techniques. Has this led you to pursue a degree in nutrition, not realizing that your eating has become disordered? For many people, stumbling upon Intuitive Eating is just an AHA moment. I see this pattern with many private practice dietitians, that entrepreneurship parallels with Intuitive Eating, because it's so right yet so hard! How do you stay aligned with your values when your getting pushback? How do we brake out of that "people pleaser" cycle when we are growing a private practice? Haley Goodrich, RD, LDN, CEDRD-S Haley Goodrich is a Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian who is fiercely passionate about helping people heal from disordered eating and cultivate a peaceful relationship with food and their body. She specializes in eating disorder recovery, body image, weight-inclusive nutrition therapy, and is an iaedp approved supervisor for other registered dietitians. Haley is currently the Eating Disorder Resource Professional for the Behavior Health Nutrition dietetic practice group. In addition to individual client work and managing her group private practice, she is also the co-founder of INSPIRD to SEEK, where she mentors nutrition entrepreneurs and practitioners who are challenging the status quo of our health industry. Haley strongly believes in integrating the Non-Diet Approach and HAES® philosophy into all health care settings, including nutrition therapy. She advocates through her writing, speaking, and social media presence. | Ep: 49: Is our relationship to food connected to our relationship to money? With Rachelle Heinenman, LMHC | 20 Jan 2021 | 00:36:21
In Today's episode of Get INTUIT with Gila, I interviewed Rachelle Heinenman on the fascinating topic of our relationship to food and its connection to our relationship to money. Rachelle Heinemann is a licensed mental health counselor based in NYC and Brooklyn. She specializes in the treatment of eating disorders and emotional eating as well as exercise addiction and body image struggles. She also works extensively with those challenged by depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties and career stress. Rachelle is trained as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist. She works with her clients to find meaning in their lives and attain long lasting results. In addition to her practice, Rachelle has taught courses in eating disorders and body image at undergraduate programs and high schools. She also provides consultation and education to members of the community. We both felt like this was a very important topic to discuss because we see these patterns in our offices. Some people work out the issues they have with food, only to realize that they are now using something else to cope. NOW - please remember that we all NEED things to cope. We are aiming for the proper amount of using certain things as a coping mechanism and not numbing ourselves with it. It's a fine line and that is why I strongly encourage using a dietitian and/or a therapist to help you work through these complicated issues. I know its a lot of time, energy and money but if food is holding you back from living the life you want to be living, getting help is worth every penny. How appropriate for this topic of using money as a coping strategy. Let me know what you guys think! As always, thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to listen to this podcast. I want this podcast to be a free resource for my listeners so that they don't have to stay stuck in a negative head space about their body's and food. Please make sure to subscribe to the podcast and YouTube channel so that this message can continue to be spread. Reach out to Rachelle here:
| EP 48: Esther Taub Schlesinger, CEO of Esther Taub Fitness, shares how healthy behaviors can be for EVERY BODY size. | 13 Jan 2021 | 00:45:16 | |
In today's episode of Get INTUIT with Gila, I had the absolute privilege's of interviewing Esther Taub of Esther Taub Fitness. I was drawn to Esther on Instagram because of her bubbly personally and her positive energy around movement. I knew I had to get her on the show to help encourage people in all body sizes to enjoy movement and reap the health benefits. Not only does she promote a balanced approach to exercise, she is educating the public on the importance of eating foods that feel good in your body without succumbing to the pressure of diet culture, a hard balance to achieve. We had such a great interview! You will learn a lot from Esther and she was so much fun to talk to! My name is Esther Taub Schlesinger, CEO of Esther Taub Fitness. I am the leading English speaking Personal Trainer in the beautiful country of Israel! Throughout my 9 years in the field I have had the privilege of helping several thousands of woman reach their health goals. | EP 47: Body Image in a Foreign Body with the incredible woman Esther Widroff of IncrediFall | 06 Jan 2021 | 01:13:09
This episode has been moving through me since we recorded one week ago. Esther Widroff is an incredible woman and I knew I had to get to know her better. I originally came across her business account on Instagram called IncrediFall. Esther came up with a brilliant idea to attach hair to an elastic headband creating a much more comfortable and practical fall. That's not the coolest part of her story though. Esther generously donates her time to this cause because she believes in this product and wanted to do something in her merit to help her with an extremely challenging life choice. Esther was diagnosed with a BRCA gene mutation in 2018 and underwent prophylactic risk reducing surgery in June 2019 and January 2020. Esther is the wife of an active duty Navy Psychologist so her family moves every few years, but they currently call the incredible community of Waterbury, CT home. I had so many important things to discuss with Esther - and this interview does cover a lot! Firstly - 1 in 40 Ashkenazi Jews will carry this gene mutation. Are we burying our heads in the sand by not getting tested? - I don't know. I don't have the answers but it was something important for me to hear and really think about. Next - what happens to our sense of self when our physical body is altered? Does our identity change or is this the first time we actually know who we are? Producing a product that is revolutionary and can potentially be a very successful business - donating your time for the cause in your merit - how do we stay true to our values. Esther's husband is an active duty Navy Psychologist. It's clear to me that the entire family has developed a certain strength about them that is about to do really hard things but really lives within their value system. This was truly incredible. I can't stress enough how my chizuk I got from the interview and how much I learned. Enjoy the show! Esther can be reached at ekwidroff@gmail.com. Another resource I wanted to include is: Bonnie Beckoff is the social worker from sharsheret - she is INCREDIBLE. Her email is bbeckoff@sharsheret.org

| Ep. 44: Enabling our child's anxiety by helping (read: overly controlling) them, With Michal Simon, LCSW. | 16 Dec 2020 | 00:48:44 | |
Michal is a licensed clinical social worker who works with children, teens and adults, and specializes in trauma and anxiety. She enjoys working with complex traumas. Throughout the day, she is constantly going between working with children and adults, and she loves this variety of experiences. Michal always wanted to be a therapist. She has a love for psychology and enjoyed shadowing therapists in college. Michal found it inspiring when people used life’s challenges as an opportunity for growth. She loves working with that depth and watching people working on their self-growth. Oftentimes, parents will bring their child into her practice to work on picky eating. Usually this is a child trying to gain autonomy through eating. When they can’t get this autonomy, the child goes to shame and doubt. There’s a concept that overprotecting enables anxiety, which is hard for parents to understand. When we protect our children too much, we take away the child’s ability to problem solve and we are telling their mind that they can’t handle difficult situations. If a parent takes away these abilities from the child, the child has no opportunity for growth in that area. This increases the child’s anxiety and ability to deal with problems. As a parent, how do you know when you’re overprotecting? Ask yourself, am I noticing stress, anger or anxiety in myself about my child’s issue? Is this issue within my child’s capability to figure out on his own? Michal’s 4 year old came up to her and said I found this toy in my brother’s room that I want to take to school. Instead of saying, you can’t take that, she said do you think your brother would be happy if you took his toy without permission? Michal laid out the situation in question form for him to think about. A few minutes later, her 4 year old told her that he wasn’t going to take it to school because his brother would be upset. Michal let her child problem solve on his own instead of yelling at him about what he should do. Being a conscious parent, is becoming aware of your own feelings and understanding why your child’s behavior is triggering you and why you’re trying to control it. When your child puts on a quirky outfit, instead of forcing him to change, think about what insecurity this is bringing up in you. What are really going to be the consequences if my child wears this outfit? If your child refuses to wear a coat in the winter, let him go without a coat one day and hope he learns his lesson. When a parent realizes they are exaggerating the negative consequences that may occur, they should step back and let the child decide. Your child needs boundaries, but within those boundaries we must let our children make choices. To parallel this with food, it’s amazing to see the choices your children will make when you give them autonomy over food. You will see them trying to make choices that feel good in their bodies. | Ep: 43: Are you afraid of Chanukah? Donuts and latkes are here to enhance Chanukah not to scare us! | 09 Dec 2020 | 00:25:09
In today's episode of Get Intuit with Gila, I wanted, NO, I NEEDED to share with you how I am feeling towards Chanukah. I know that for many of you, Chanukah can be overwhelming. You may be excited about Chanukah in theory, but when you think about all the fried food, you start getting anxious and overwhelmed. I get it. I was once there. I strongly believe that our Holiday's should be enjoyed and enhanced with food. Diet culture has sort of stolen that from us. Diet culture screams at us to "watch ourselves" and "make sure your donut isn't fried." I mean who in the heck wants to eat a baked donut?? Anyways, the point is is that I totally understand how scary a Holiday can be . I just want to point out how sad that is. How unbelievably unfair that is. How diet culture has sort of stolen so much from us and we don't have to continue living like this. I hope this episode resonates with you. Please let me know how you feel about this episode. All feedback is welcome! Have a beautiful day and beautiful Chanukah! To see more episodes like this and read the full blog on today’s episode, please visit my website www.gilaglassberg.com. | Ep. 42: How to process emotions without using food. Emotional Freedom Technique with Faigy Pollack. | 03 Dec 2020 | 00:28:42
In today's episode of Get Intuit with Gila, I had Faigy Pollack come back on the show. I felt like this was a very important episode to do because so many people I know struggle with using food to cope with their emotions. Now, their really isn't anything inheritantly wrong with doing that, the problem is when that is our ONLY coping skill and we are completely neglecting the actually emotional problem. Most people I know though have not been taught how to handle strong emotions. I think generationally, it wasn't done and perhaps this generation is hungry for help with dealing with our emotions. I was introduced to Tapping around the same time I was introduced to Intuitive Eating, and both modalities of healing have been life changing. One of the most powerful ways to learn is to actually experience something in your own body. In this episode, you can actually do that along with Faigy and I. So many people want to adapt Intuitive Eating into their lives but they still have really strong negative feelings about their bodies and shame for eating foods on their "bad" list. Come with us on this journey in this episode. Use this episode whenever you need something to help you cope with a strong emotion. Disclaimer* This is not in place of working with a therapist or a dietitian. Faigy Pollock Is the creator of “Unblock Your Way to Oneness”, a comprehensive course on the Torah’s perspective of marital intimacy and practical application of that knowledge. Faigy is a certified EFT practitioner and acclaimed kallah teacher. Through her work in EFT Faigy has helped hundreds of women overcome hardships in their marriages with her unique approach to marital intimacy. As a kallah teacher she has prepared many young women for a happy and fulfilling life with their husbands to be. I personally took Faigy's class, and was blown away. I also have "tapped" into the power of EFT (pun intended). This is a powerful tool to work through your emotions. I think you will thoroughly enjoy this episode! I know I did! | Ep 41: Malkie Hirsch: Kiss The Kosher Cook Food Blogger turned Inspirational author not by choice | 25 Nov 2020 | 01:02:58
In today's episode of Get Intuit with Gila, I had the honor and privelahe of intervewiing Malkie Hirsch of KissTheKoshercook. I actually got to meet Malkie last year when we were interviewed on the same day by Naomi Nachman. Many times, when you meet someone in person who you kind of "know" from Instagram, you are surprised that they aren't as nice as they seem. Honestly, I loved Malkie when I met her. She is so sweet, kind and easy to talk to. Malkie is a talented cook who shares a lot of whats goes on in her day to day life on her platform. Just about 1.5 years ago, Malkie's life completely changed when her husband Moshe, suddenly died. This is a challenge that no one should ever know, but as Malkie and I discussed in this episode, she has chosen to take this horrible pain and make meaning with it (as I said in the interview, check out the book By David Kessler and Elisabeth Kubler Ross https://grief.com/books-by-david-kessler/on-grief-and-grieving-elisabeth-kubler-rosss-david-kessler/). Malkie has been given a hardship that she never would have asked for, but is using this deep pain to help others. I personally suffered my own sudden loss, 2 years ago when my mother died very suddenly. Everyday, since that day, I have felt swallowed in a cloud of grief, pain, hopelessness, despair and confusion. When I started reading Malkie's articles, I had some semblance of hope, an anchor, and space and place to carry my pain with me. Malkie has an incredible way with her written words and she is a huge source of inspiration and hope for me and for so many others. A bit more about Malkie: Malkie Hirsch is a native of the Five Towns, hailing from Lawrence and moved to Woodmere after marrying her husband Moshe and is currently raising her kids (Dovid, Nison, Yosef, Gavriel and Rosie) on Barnard ave. She started working in marketing, running the hair and makeup division at an artists agency, and currently works as a real estate broker in addition to being a food blogger at the popular Instagram page “kiss the kosher cook”. She has a Facebook page of the same name and a food sharing WhatsApp page called “kiss the kosher queens.” Last year, after the sudden and tragic death of her 40 year old husband, she took to writing about her journey as a single mother to 5 kids (ages 11-1 1/2) on her page as well as The Five Towns Jewish Times publication on a weekly basis, where it’s been a very therapeutic process and has also inspired many that have reached out to share their varied stories. | EP:40: Rivka Breuer, RDN and Certified Diabetes Educator- No More Shame, No More Extremes | 18 Nov 2020 | 01:01:32
In todays episode of Get INTUIT with Gila, I sit down to speak with Rivka Breuer. I felt like I had to have Rivka on this show because besides for her being an amazing Registered Dietitian, she is also a Certified Diabetes Educator. Now, this is a very much needed specialty in the field. But besides for that, Rivka's approach is unique because she understands that this is an individualized plan of care for each and every client. We cannot use scare tactics or shame when trying to help someone manage their diagnoses of diabetes. This is not something YOU caused. This is not something to be ashamed of. So much of our physical and mental health has to do with genetics and we have to be aware of this. Diet culture shames people into changing their body. Look how that has worked. It hasn't. We need to start giving people the medical care that they need, irrelevant to their weight. If you are struggling with diabetes or know someone that is, I think this episode will really enlighten you. A bit about our interview: To see the full transcription of this episode, please visit my website www.gilaglassberg.com Rivka has been a dietitian for 20 years. She is also a certified diabetic educator which means she specializes in helping clients who have diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder where the pancreas doesn't have the ability to make insulin. The management for type 1 diabetes is much more controlled and may include insulin shots. With type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, there’s still some activity left in the pancreas but with a resistance to insulin. If you can stop it early on, you’re ahead of the game and you just have to focus on making lifestyle changes. Most of her clients have type 2 diabetes. | EP.38: Somatic Therapy with Basya Pessin - We Only Have One Body In This Life - It Is The Home For Our Soul | 04 Nov 2020 | 01:01:06
In today's session of Get INTUIT with Gila, I sit down to talk to Basya Pessin. We explore how so much of what we experience throughout our lives is in our body. We only have one body in this life and it is the home for our soul. The body gives us signals all throughout our lives. This is connected to Intuitive Eating because we feel our hunger/fullness in our bodies but diet culture turns off those cues. Our emotions also happen in our body and we need the time and space to feel them and process them. About Basya: Basya Pessin is a Psychotherapist licensed as a Clinical Social Worker. She has been practicing for close to a decade. She sees women, young adults, and teens in her private practice and teaches social work students. She guides clients to build self awareness and discover how their past conditioning contributes to their current struggles and triggers. Through this work, clients can unlearn ways of coping that are no longer serving them and live more mindfully and intentionally. She believes that therapy and healing should be accessible to all humans. Working on emotional health is a privilege that everyone should enjoy and should never be considered shameful. | EP.37: I was Supposed to Have a Baby with Aimee Baron, MD | 29 Oct 2020 | 00:59:54
In today's Episode of Get Intuit with Gila, I sit down with Aimee Baron. Aimee Baron MD, FAAP, is the founder and executive director of I Was Supposed to Have a Baby, a nonprofit organization that utilizes social media to support Jewish individuals and families as they are struggling to have a child. It provides a warm and nurturing space for those going through infertility, pregnancy loss, infant loss, surrogacy or adoption, in addition to connecting those families to resources in the Jewish community at large. We address some extremely important, heavy topics having to do with pregnancy and infant loss. We acknowledge that there is so much pain around this topic and there is also a lot of misunderstanding. People who are already suffering do not needed the added pain of suffering alone. We need to discuss our pain with other people who get it and can support us through it. We must give ourselves permission to grieve in the way that feels right to us. All feelings are welcome and sometimes, just staying in bed is what we need to do to get through the day. Aimee explains that this organization that she created is the organization she needed when she was in the thick of her pain. Now, thank G-d, that period is behind her, but she has created a space for the women in our community who are suffering and need support. I strongly believe, that in all the darks parts of our lives, we must get the support that we need. Self care isn't a luxury, it is part of surviving and getting to the other side of the pain. Aimee's information is listed below. Please reach out to her for anything you need related to this topic. She is an incredible person and she has devoted her life to helping women in our community who are struggling. | EP.36 - "You can't have a little bit of an eating disorder," with Naomi Shulman | 22 Oct 2020 | 01:06:25
In today’s episode of Get Intuit with Gila, I speak with Naomi Shulman. Naomi is a frum women who is open about her past struggle with a severe eating disorder as well as the mental health diagnoses of bipolar disorder. She has started an organization with Zahava List - Chazkeinu. This is a beautiful, amazing, very much needed organization for the frum female world. This organization is a support for anyone who is struggling or has a family member struggling with mental illness. Naomi has written a book "One Life" on the topic of her eating disorder and her recovery. We discussed at length in this episode her specific story and how she, Baruch Hashem, has fully recovered. I personally think this episode can be useful for anyone. If you are struggling with an eating disorder, you will feel heard and validated. You will also know that it is always okay and advisable to seek help. If you are a family member or a friend who is struggling along side of someone with an eating disorder, you will gain insight into the mind of someone struggling. If you are someone who lives in the world and is constantly bombarded with diet culture messages, this will give you insight into how dangerous, destructive and harmful this can be and to keep far away from it even though it seems like the normal thing to do. Naomi is also open about her diagnoses of bipolar disorder and she shares so eloquently that she is open about this struggle because she did not choose this nor does she want this, but this is what she has been given and there is no shame in it. Just like there is no shame about walking around with a broken arm, we must work on breaking the stigma around mental health. Her work is of utmost importance and I want to help spread the word on these beautiful resources she has given to the world, not despite her challenges but because of them. She discusses how there is a silver lining to her illness and she has really taken what Hashem has given her and used it for such positive in this world. I am in awe of this women and I can't wait for you to hear our honest, raw, open, enlightening conversation. | EP.35 Jennifer McGurk-Pursuing recovery from an eating disorder, diet culture and now Private Practice! Dietitian, supervisor, business coach and podcast host! | 14 Oct 2020 | 00:42:28
In today’s episode of Get Intuit with Gila, I speak with Jennifer McGurk. Jennifer McGurk is a fellow registered dietitian and certified Intuitive Eating Counselor. Jennifer is definitely a leader in the nutrition/Intuitive Eating space. The traditional dietetics field is really outdated and people like Jennifer are bringing it up to date. Besides for it being outdated because their is still a heavy focus on weight loss, it is also a field that promotes complacency. When I was pursuing my career, I heard countless stories and advice that sounded like this: "you may as well just be a teacher and get a tuition break because being a dietitian is a bad job and it pays poorly." Or "don't try to improve your job, you will never like it." I mean -please- if this is how you feel about your job- please do yourself and everyone a favor and leave it. Jennifer has started her own company and it has taken off. Besides for counseling people one on one, she has entered the space of helping other professionals. This is something that is needed so badly in our field. If you want to pursue private practice, check out Jennifer's website www.pursuingprivatepractice.com. If your looking for someone extremely knowledgeable and qualified to help you through your eating disorder, check out Jennifer's website www.eatwithknowledge.com. Jennifer McGurk, RDN, CDN, CEDRD-S is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist whose mission is to help people heal from diets, and find peace and balance with their food choices. She is the owner of the private practice Eat With Knowledge in Nyack, NY. She leads a team of dietitians who are so passionate about helping clients feel fabulous about food. As a Certified Eating Disorders Registered Dietitian, Jennifer combines her expertise in medical nutrition therapy, psychology, and physiology to help clients understand their eating behaviors, and gain the insight needed to make positive changes for their health. | Episode 34: FleishigsMag: Shifra and Shloimy Klein: The Joy of Eating, Building Confidence and Using Your Intuition | 30 Sep 2020 | 00:37:11
I brought Shifra and Shloimy onto the podcast because I really want to instill in my listeners a geniune love of food. In today's world, food has become the enemy. Something to run away from. But food sustains us. Brings us together. Helps us bond. Food is beautiful. I wanted to hear how this couple came together to create something magnificent while also bringing so much love and joy to food. Lets get to know them here! Shifra and Shloimy explain that they got into the food magazine business about ten years ago. This was a different magazine. This was B’tayavon magazine. Other magazines also came out around that time, but there's really help up. They were creating recipes even out of their small apartment in crown heights. What they think actually really helped them was that they never had an official business plan. The whole process was completely organic. As they call “business/heimishe.” I was completely blown away with this story. How does someone have so much confidence to just start a business. To just start a magazine. To put this in perspective - It took me months to just say out loud I was starting a business. I had such a fear of failing and a fear of not knowing what I was doing. The couple answers - Shifra is naturally very confident. Both Shifra and Shloimy are from large families and are both the oldest in their families. Shifra says her parents gave her a ton of independence and she also has this natural confidence. She doesn't take things too seriously. Even for the first photo shoot, she just found some random person in New Jersey. She packed up the food and just headed on her way. With this confidence. When they made mistakes, it didn't knock them down. They took the constructive feedback and used it to move forward. This is truly inspiring and it’s something I myself have to hear. They try to instill this independence in their own children. For example- Shifra says - she isn't waking the kids up for school - they can do this on their own. Within age appropriateness. So the magazine came to be because Shifra and Shloimy both had a huge passion for food. They were subscribed to every food magazine - none of which were kosher. This is how the idea for the magazine came to be. They worked together so well because of the circumstances. The kids were mostly off to school. We had more time for ourselves and as a couple and we worked well together. Shifra and Shloimy say that they were both put on diets as adolescents. Shifra says that at the age of 16- she realized, even her friends in smaller bodies were unhappy with their bodies. She didn't subscribe to the pressures of diet culture, she knew this would never make her happy. Shloimy toys with different diets, but they didn't work (because we know they don't work). | Episode 33: Rosh Hashanah, A New Year, A New Perspective - Solo Episode | 23 Sep 2020 | 00:29:32
In today's episode, I decided to go solo. I had so much more to say in my interview with Shevi Samet, and I always prefer to have conversations with other people but I felt like I had a lot to share on this topic. Rosh Hashanah, The Jewish New Year, can feel really heavy to a lot of us. Perhaps, we were brought up in an age where fear was a powerful motivator. I believe that is no longer the case. I wanted to bring you a new perspective and answer some listeners who had follow up questions. I would love to hear any feedback or answer your questions! Wishing you all a year of happiness, health, parnassah, Shalom bayis, Nachas, and only good things. May the suffering in this world end and let us welcome Moshiach in Yerushalim. | Episode 32: Shevi Samet - Intuitive Eating - Does guilt have a role in our relationship with food? What about our relationship with Hashem? Let's explore that together! | 17 Sep 2020 | 00:49:10
In today’s episode of Get Intuit with Gila, I have the privilege of speaking with Shevi Samit of @itsalearninglife. Shevi Samet teaches because she can't stop learning. An educator for 15 years and a student for even longer, Shevi is a high school and kallah teacher and mentor. Her style is very much reflective of her personality and her understanding of young women both in and out of the classroom; energetic and engaging, focusing on text based concepts which explore fundamental topics specifically relationships and Women in Judaism. While she struggles to maintain her Canadian accent despite years of New York living, the reputable warmth and sincerity of her hometown have remained with her. Shevi and I explored her relationship with food and her body. We discussed how she came to the concept of Intuitive Eating even before she knew it was an actual thing. I really wanted to speak to Shevi about her relationship with Judaism. Life isn't linear. Intuitive Eating isn't linear. Judaism isn't linear. It's not static. We must mature in our Judaism. In our relationship with ourselves. With Hashem. Maybe Rosh Hashanah isn't about judgement - maybe its about accounting. Can we neutralize it. I know for me, I work better when I am less scared of judgment and more interested in reflection. Just something to think about! Want to learn more about Shevi Samet? Make sure to follow her @itsalearninglife on Instagram. Thanks Shevi for sharing your story and role on today’s episode of Get Intuit with Gila! | Episode 24: Massage Therapy as a form of self care, embodiment and learning to listen to the cues of our body with massage therapist Shani Safier | 13 Sep 2020 | 00:40:20
In today's episode, I interview Shani Safier. Shani is a licensed massage therapist (full bio below). We had a really interesting conversation about different forms of self care. Physical touch can be such a powerful tool for healing, especially if this is your love language (https://www.5lovelanguages.com/). Massage can also be that quit, safe space to zone out. Massage is a great way to embody your body. Gentle dance or yoga can help you feel comfortable in your own body. We also touched on the topic of safe and pleasurable touch. In our community, their is a huge emphasis on teaching our children about safe touch almost to the point of scaring them about touch. We need to make a point to teach our children about positive touch. This is a much more effective way to relate to touch. We also spoke about establishing healthy boundaries relating to self care and safe touch. Shani mentioned a book called: Where to Draw the Line: How to Set Healthy Boundaries Every Day (https://www.amazon.com/Where-Draw-Line-Healthy-Boundaries-ebook/dp/B0061OUU0E) which I am excited to read myself! Shani also gave us some great tips to practice these tools on yourself. Hope you enjoyed! I know I did! Shani Safier is a licensed massage therapist based in Far Rockaway, NY. She focuses on the whole person; assessing muscle tension, stress levels, and provides a safe and judgement-free environment for her clients to relax and feel their best. | Episode 31: Jessica Tzur- Life Beyond Mental Illness- How to use your struggle for something positive. | 09 Sep 2020 | 00:36:16
In today’s episode of Get Intuit with Gila, I speak with Jessica Tzur. Jessica has become a dear friend of mine. She is open about her struggle with anxiety and depression and has used this struggle to help and empower others. It is truly remarkable to see what she has done to remedy this illness. She used chesed in two ways. Number one - she has become a voice for those struggling - creating support groups and funds for therapy for those who need. Number two - she has created a beautiful gemach, helping in two ways - she collects clothes and shoes from stores and sells them at a very small fee (.50$-5.00$ items) and with that money - she helps send kids to camp! How seriously, amazingly awesome is that!? For some people, doing acts of kindness is really a life line. What a beautiful way to spin a hard situation. On the flip side, if chesed(acts of kindness) isn’t your thing, do not despair. There are SO many modalities of healing and I would encourage you to find one that speaks to you! Mine are going to a spin class, going out to eat with friends, journaling and going to therapy. What are yours? If you don’t have any, start exploring now! Reminder for those who need it. Self care is a necessity and not an added bonus. Especially for those struggling with mental illness, self care tools are literally coping skills and part of the therapy. Here’s a little bit about my guest: “Hi, my name is Jessica. I live in far rockaway with my. Husband and 5 delicious children who fill my heart with love and my house with chaos . I grew up in a secular home in New Hampshire and married a frum israeli man. As they say opposites attract. My life is quite busy. Besides for cooking, cleaning, homework, mommying and trying not to lose my sanity, I run an at home day care as well as a gemach for women and children’s clothing. Running and physical exercise is my passion as it gives my body physical strength and my head emotional space. Here’s where it gets interesting. I suffer with severe anxiety and depression. Because god gave me the opportunity to hit rock bottom my eyes were opened to a very big gap In our jewish world- an all encompassing organization for women struggling with mental health challenges. Hence I recently launched CATCH- creating a team of courage and hope. The go to spot for women who need support navigating these extremely challenging waters- fighting an illness so often invisible to the outside world. CATCH will be an all encompassing space for women to get support and direction and not feel alone when dealing with anxiety and depression.
