Guest Podcast: "Nuances - Queering Premodern Asia"

vendredi 16 août 2024Durée 01:03:08

Enjoy this bonus episode of the podcast series Nuances: Our Asian Stories.  Hosted by Lazou, Nuance's latest season is titled Queering Premodern Asia and each episode explores different aspects of sexual diversity in premodern Asia with commentary and personal stories from guest scholars and artists.  Lazou reached out recently and, because our podcasts have a lot of themes in common, we decided to share an episode of each other’s pod with our listeners.  Just so you know, Lazou’s structure of the episodes: first a guest scholar talks about some really interesting queer history of ancient Asian cultures and then, after that, a guest talks about their own personal history and experiences. As you may have guessed, this is my favorite part of the episode. This first episode of the Queering Premodern Asia series is titled “In search of Prince Charming…and his King!” and the first half is full of swoon-worthy love stories of gorgeous male lovers of kings and saints!  Then there is a conversation between Lazou and guest Edmond Chan, a native of Texas who is also a professional musician and scholar. Edmond's conversation with Lazou is really real and raw and it sounds a lot like a Fruitbowl interview so check it out and, if you like the show, subscribe to their feed! Here’s a LIST of their queer-themed episodes! Fruitbowl will return in September with new Season 5 episodes. Hope you’re having a great summer!  xo Dave.

S5E13 - Firsts Vol.6: Young Adult

Saison 5 · Épisode 13

vendredi 2 août 2024Durée 01:14:25

You graduated high school. You packed up all your things and you’re moving into a dorm room or your first apartment. Finally, you have the chance to define life on your own terms. For many queer people, leaving our family and getting our own place is the chance to finally seek out the experiences we’ve always wanted but weren’t allowed to have when every move, every decision we made was scrutinized by the family that we grew up with.  In this final volume of our “Firsts” series we hear from Fruitbowl contributors about a variety of firsts: first “intimacies,” first boyfriends, first gay bars, first kisses; coming out, going in again, coming out a second time; all the things we wanted to do for so long and finally got the chance.  List of contributors and links to their full length episodes: 1.Tai (S3E7) - “Well, I wanted this and it’s stupid intense.” 2. Adam (S2E3) - Visiting The Cock. 3. Karilla (S3E15) - First time with a guy. First time with a girl. 4. Aditya (S2E2) - Coming out, going in and coming out again. 5. Ari (S4E3) - First time with college girlfriend. 6. Carlos (S1E2) - First boyfriend Kevin/Kathy. 7. Breona (S4E18) - Pregnant with Baby Jesus? 8. Josh (S3E1) - The Hot Barista. 9. James (S1E2) - Twizzler Nibs. 10. Andre (S3E17) - Sober Vegan Pride Party for 2. This episode was edited and hosted by Dave Quantic, the creator of Fruitbowl.  Danny Tayara edited the music and final mix. Thanks Danny! Fruitbowl will be on hiatus this August but will return with fresh episodes in September. Have a great rest of your summer everyone! S5E3 - Origins Vol.3: Mother's Nature

Saison 5 · Épisode 3

jeudi 21 décembre 2023Durée 01:10:43

Femininity and queerness go hand in hand; that’s the conventional wisdom, anyway. So it follows that our mom’s should be supportive, non-judgmental, embracing of our idiosyncrasies and accepting of children who don’t conform to conventional expectations of gender. But it doesn’t always work out that way. In this episode, Dave introduces a collection of stories about moms who teach us, disappoint us and, occasionally, surprise us. Here’s a list of contributors for this episode in the order in which they are presented along with links to their full length episodes in the Fruitbowl archive: Jerry (S1E4) “Hairy chest Pilgrim”; Andrew (S4E11) “Do you want to go to the mall?”; Saira (S3E11) “What do you think a blowjob is?”; Karilla (S3E3) “Just read a book or something.”; DeAunte (S3E3) “Shout out to my Aunties.”; Justin (S4E1) “A family of matriarchs.”; Andre (S3E17) “Kid, you’re a pussy.”; Steven (S4E14) “Hippie Mom.”; Ari (S4E3) “Crying in the desert.” ; Paul (S3E5) “Telling mom everything.”; Nathan (S3E4) “Queer Aunt, Uncle & A Cool Mom.”; Jerusha (S2E1) “A Grandmother who fought AIDS.”; Kenny (S4E6) “Kicked out by mom.”; Breona (S4E18) “A sweet and fierce mom.” This episode was edited by Dave Quantic, the creator of Fruitbowl.  Ryan Weadon was the music editor and final mixer. S5E2 - Origins Vol.2: Our Flawed Fathers

Saison 5 · Épisode 2

jeudi 7 décembre 2023Durée 01:11:40

There are as many cliches about fatherhood as there are about queer people. Dads are little league coaches, the leaders of prayers, the final word in family debates, trusted voices of wisdom who guide their children through adolescence and prepare them for adulthood. Join Dave as he introduces a chorus of queers who describe their complex relationships with their fathers and what their patriarchs did (or didn’t do) when they found themselves in charge of kids who drew outside the lines of the typical heteronormative behavior. Here’s a list of contributors for this episode in the order in which they are presented along with links to their full length episodes in the Fruitbowl archive: Tyler - S1E6; Deaunte - S3E3; Shavit - S3E8; Tai - S3E7; Jason - S1E1; Adam T. - S3E20; Paul - S3E5; Adé - S2E11; Carlos - S1E2; Stephen - S2E10; Alan - S3E2; Nathan S. - S3E13; Zachery - S4E16. Welcome to Season 5 and a new episode format! Instead of just one person’s story, Season 5 episodes will present a variety of different stories and anecdotes from the Fruitbowl archive centered around a common theme. In this inaugural episode we focus on stories about families and hometowns. Adam describes being bullied and what happened when he eventually allowed himself to enjoy masturbation. Originally recorded in Oct. 2019. Find Adam’s full episode HERE (S2E3). Elliott reflects on the process of emancipating themself from their parents when they were still an adolescent and the process of discovering their trans identity. Originally recorded in June 2021. Listen to Elliott’s full episode HERE (S3E11). Joshua was raised by his mom in Texas and felt the pressure to adhere to popular ideas about Texas masculinity, Latino machismo and family who were devout Christians. Originally recorded in Oct. of 2019. Listen to the full interview HERE (S3E1). RC was a self-described Army brat who got some simple instruction from their mother regarding boys and was outed by their brother in high school while in Guam. Originally recorded in July of 2019. Mike is part of a first-generation Vietnamese American family and it took him awhile to realize he could take his own path instead of just fulfilling his family’s expectations for his future. Originally recorded in Sept. of 2021. Listen to the full interview HERE (S3E19). Listen on Apple Podcasts  Listen on Spotify. S4E18 - Breona, 34. Mt. Vernon, WA

Saison 4 · Épisode 17

jeudi 29 décembre 2022Durée 01:10:44

Breona is a professional sex therapist and author who lives not far from her hometown of Mt. Vernon, WA: home to the annual tulip festival. Growing up, Breona didn’t have many resources to answer her questions about sex. An early investigation to online porn was discovered by her parents and inspired her mother to have The Talk with her, but questions remained about being “in love” and responding to her body’s sexual instincts. College provided opportunities to finally dive into the “full menu” of sex, but she eventually realized she wasn’t enjoying sex so much as performing it for her partners.  Coming out and finally having conversations about pleasure with her partners inspired her to become a sex therapist and help others discover themselves. One way she’s done that is by writing The Clitarus Chronicles, a humorous and educational story about Clitty: an adorable, clitoris-shaped, cartoon dinosaur with the dream to write a novel but needs help figuring out the climax. The book features a meaningful metaphor about prioritizing pleasure and communication with partners and it’s illustrated by Fruitbowl’s multi-talented editor, Danny Tayara! Learn more about Breona’s professional counseling practice at www.colorful-therapy.com.  Breona's story brings us to the conclusion of Fruitbowl's Season 4. I will be taking a hiatus in January to recharge and make a plan for next year's production. We are currently without a sponsor so I will also spend time pitching to potential sponsors. S4E17 - John C., Tallulah, LA

Saison 4 · Épisode 17

jeudi 15 décembre 2022Durée 01:10:44

Listen on Apple Podcasts Listen on Spotify John C. has had an unpredictable professional career and sexual history. He grew up in the deep south with racist family members and neighbors. Sexual experimentation with a friend happened early on, but, later, in college, things got complicated when a coworker raped John after a night of drugs and drinking. Jealous partners during his years as an aerobics instructor and boyfriends who didn't "get" his drag performance were additional obstacles. But through it all, John has maintained his irrepressible spirit and laser sharp humor which he expresses most clearly through his amazing drag persona, Connie. He even talks a little about Connie being a guest on RuPaul's Drag Race. S4E16 - Zachery, 24. Seattle

Saison 4 · Épisode 16

mercredi 23 novembre 2022Durée 01:00:18

When I was preparing to record my intro to Zachery’s episode, I started to compose a long reflection on the recent tragedy in Colorado Springs where a 22 year old monster with a rife decided to murder 5 innocent people in a gay bar, but every attempt I made trying to articulate my rage and sadness seemed trite and cliché. So I decided to simply dedicate this episode to the victims. Some listeners might wonder why I don’t have more famous people on Fruitbowl and the reason is simple: famous people are not very relatable. I prefer to feature stories of everyday people; queer people who have found a way to be themselves and live without apology. Many have escaped abusive homes, parents, communities and found new families who love them for who they are. The saddest part of tragedies like the one in Colorado is reading the obituaries of the people whose lives were cut short by hate and violence.  They are almost always described as caring, compassionate, fun to be around and I have no doubt that is true. They sound like the kind of people I would have loved to interview for Fruitbowl and it breaks my heart that I will never be able to hear their stories. I hope you can honor the lives of those we have lost to anti-queer violence by fiercely living your truth and continuing to love whomever you want to love, regardless of their gender, gender expression, race, income, age, background, culture. That’s what queer people before us have fought so hard for and there’s really no better way to tick off the bullies - the monsters with rifles and the politicians who encourage them - who try to silence us. And now, back to my regularly scheduled introduction: If you’re a kinkster or interested in exploring kink, you’re gonna love Zachery’s interview. Even though he’s only 24, Zachery has explored a wide variety of sexual activities that fall far outside of the definition of “vanilla” and he’s had a lot of fun adventures along the way. He also brings with him a background in public health and sexual advocacy as well a stint working at Doghouse Leathers, Seattle’s local queer sex shop.  Originally from small town Michigan where he came out to his family and friends at age 16, Zachery came to Washington for academics and exploring his ever-expanding taste for adventurous sex. You might even say he’s a sex explorer.  Thanks to our post-production sponsor, the new SPACES app, powered by Hornet! S4E15 - Dave, 49. Derby, KS

Saison 4 · Épisode 15

jeudi 3 novembre 2022Durée 01:32:01

Fruitbowl’s creator and producer, Dave Quantic, provides his first full-length Fruitbowl interview in this “very special” episode hosted by editor Ryan Weadon. Dave’s sexual orientation came into focus early on while growing up in small-town, suburban Kansas in the late eighties, but the only place he could meet other queer people was cruising bathrooms and public parks in near-by Wichita. An assault and HIV scare inspired him to come out in college and, eventually, to his family. Since then, he’s lived in Dallas, New York City, Los Angeles and Seattle and, along the way, his preferences for negotiating love, sex and friendship have diverged from conventional ideas about relationships. It’s only in the last few years that he’s figured out what he wants and how he wants to live as a gay man.  Thanks to our post-production sponsor, the new SPACES app, powered by Hornet!
