Ep 104. From Medical Translator to Patient-Research Pro: Your Path to High-Value Niche Services

mardi 9 décembre 2025Durée 25:39

Send us Fan Mail

Discover the untapped opportunities in patient-sided research and linguistic validation for medical translators. Keith Berelowitz, expert in clinical trial patient engagement, reveals how COVID-19 transformed the pharmaceutical landscape and why pharma companies are now investing heavily in patient-focused research.

Learn exactly where freelancers fit into this high-value niche, how to position yourself effectively, and why the human element in medical translation will always be essential—even in the AI era.

What You'll Learn:

Keith breaks down the massive shift from clinician-focused to patient-focused clinical trials, explaining why 60-80% of trials still face delays due to poor patient engagement.

You'll discover concrete opportunities in research content creation, digital patient outreach, and behavioral science applications that AI simply cannot replicate.

Keith shares the critical difference between treating patients as data points versus understanding their real-world needs, and how this creates openings for specialized freelancers who can bridge cultural and linguistic nuances.

Key Topics Covered:

Why COVID-19 catalyzed a fundamental shift toward patient-sided research

The explosive growth in rare disease trials running in 15-20+ languages

How to use AI as a productivity tool rather than viewing it as competition

Applying behavioral science (self-determination theory, cognitive load theory, trust models) to patient engagement

Quick wins for positioning yourself in the linguistic validation space

The biggest misconceptions pharma companies have about patient recruitment

About Keith:

Keith leads pRx Engage, a clinical trial patient recruitment and engagement platform specializing in rare disease research.

With a career spanning bench science to commercial clinical research, Keith has pioneered behavioral science applications in patient engagement, helping pharmaceutical companies move beyond transactional recruitment toward long-term relationship building with patients.

Resources Mentioned:

PRx Engage: prxengage.com

Final Takeaway:

Clinical research isn't just about patients joining trials; it's about people looking to improve their lives and health. Keep that front and centre, and you'll win trust while building a rewarding career in this specialized niche.

In this episode, I am joined by Alex Sanfilippo, founder of Podmatch, a smart platform that connects podcast hosts and guests. Alex shares his entrepreneurial journey from selling golf balls as a child to building one of the most trusted tools in the podcasting space. With experience in real estate, aerospace, and digital marketing, Alex brings deep insight into why podcasting is emerging as one of the most powerful tools for building authentic business relationships.

The conversation explores the unique intimacy of podcasting, where real human-to-human conversation fosters trust and credibility in a way few other channels can. Whether you’re a host or a guest, podcasting helps you refine your message, build visibility, and attract qualified leads. Alex shares personal stories, practical advice and mindset shifts that have helped him—and others—leverage podcasting for sustainable business growth.

Notable Nuggets:

  • Embrace Imperfection for Authenticity
Perfection is not a prerequisite for podcasting success. Starting with what you have and embracing the imperfections of real life—such as a baby crying during an episode—can deepen trust and connection with listeners.
  • Strategise for Niche Impact, Not Just Scale
Focusing on a well-defined audience and appearing on shows where your message is truly relevant is far more effective than chasing large numbers. Real impact comes from relevance and resonance.
  • Cultivate Courage to Show Up
Fear is a natural part of visibility and entrepreneurship. The key is to act anyway. Alex shares how doing what scares him has consistently driven growth and strengthened his position as a leader and communicator.

Ep 92. Future-Ready Work: Redefining Productivity with Kody Thompson of Wrkpod

In this episode of "Freelancer Training on How to Find More Direct Clients," I speak with Kody Thompson about his entrepreneurial journey from a graphic designer to the founder of a $3 million web development company and eventually, Workpod, a virtual assistance company.

The conversation focuses on the strategic use of Virtual Assistants (VAs) to help freelancers, particularly solo language pros, scale their businesses, buy back their time and overcome common outsourcing hurdles. Cody shares insights on identifying tasks to outsource, training VAs, fostering the right mindset for delegation, and the future of the VA industry in the age of AI.

3 Clear Takeaways:

Outsource Non-Billable, Repeatable Tasks First to Maximise Your "Genius Zone":

Cody advises freelancers to identify their "genius zone" – the revenue-generating activities they excel at – and outsource all other non-billable, day-to-day administrative tasks.

For example, a graphic designer should focus on designing, not email management or invoicing, to increase their billable hours and overall earnings. The initial VA hire should handle repeatable tasks that do not require high-level industry expertise, such as administrative duties, allowing the freelancer to concentrate on their core, high-value work.

Cultivate a Mindset of Trust and Systemisation:

Overcome the "nobody can do it as well as me" or "it's faster if I do it myself" mindsets, as these limit business growth. Cody stresses the importance of trusting others' skills and building systems and processes to leverage their time effectively. He suggests the "1-3-1 principle" for delegation: when a staff member comes with one problem, require them to present three solutions and one recommendation, fostering problem-solving and leadership within the team.

Invest in Your VA as a Human Being and Embrace AI Training:

Treat your VA as a valuable team member, building rapport, providing clear systems, and dedicating time to their development. Cody emphasizes that a "hungry" VA, eager to learn, is often more valuable than one with just experience. In the context of technological advancements, particularly AI, he believes VAs who are trained to utilise AI tools will become more valuable to businesses, as they will be the ones wielding, programming, and implementing these tools.

A special link for booking a call and a 160-item checklist of tasks to outsource are available for listeners. Workpod places full-time VAs, typically costing about $6 USD per hour for 40 hours a week, which includes the VA's sa
