Tina Muir – Running for Real – Making a Difference25 Oct 202201:11:31

Hello Runners!

Fall race season is winding down, and what a season it has been thus far.

First, the world record at the Berlin Marathon by Eliud Kipchoge with a time of 2:01:09. And a week later, the US Women's Marathon Record fell at the Chicago Marathon by Emily Sisson with a time of 2:18:29. The next US major is in a few weeks, the New York Marathon! We shall see what amazing things happen.

Congratulations to each of you that reached your goal of finishing a race, or two, or three this fall. You rock.

I'm so honored, humbled, and excited to have Tina Muir as my guest this episode. Tina is the founder and CEO of Running for Real, a running influencer, and the #1 running podcast with over 5.5 million downloads. Running for Real is much more than a running podcast; it's a running community! Tina is exceptionally passionate about the environment, and uses her platform to bring awareness to our planet as an environmental activist. Simply a wonderful human being making a huge difference!

In April, Tina ran the Maui Marathon as a guide for a dear friend, Joseph Retherford who is mostly blind. A former elite runner, she abruptly decided to stop running in her prime shocking the running world. She had had enough. Tina had been suffering from amenorrhea, the loss of menstruation, for nine years. She was burnt out and wanted to start a family. So she stopped running.

She reached out to me in Maui to see if we could connect. Unfortunately, it didn't happen because I was highly strapped for the entire weekend and after as the course director. But we talked, and she expressed how much she enjoyed the marathon and its effect on her being in Maui.

I know you will enjoy this episode. We talk very little about Tina's past as an elite runner, and you can find numerous articles written about Tina on the Internet. Most of our talk is on her Maui experience, the environment, the status of races becoming more environmentally friendly, the addition of a non-binary category, and the fantastic running community she is building. We go deep, for sure. I am grateful to call Tina a friend!

So please, please share this episode with all of your running friends and on your social media platforms. It is, in my opinion, one of my best episodes!

Enjoy this episode! And if Tina inspires you, please send me a note to let me know your thoughts at jim@feelgoodrunning.com.Thank you runners for listening to the Feel-Good Running Podcast! Eliza Fletcher – Heinous, Senseless, Murder – Safety Tips from Tasha Ina Church09 Sep 202201:06:20
  • Hello Runners! This must stop! Another young woman was violently murdered while out for a run!Eliza Fletcher from Memphis, wife, mother of two boys, and a Kindergarten teacher, was out for a run on Friday, September 2, 2022. She was running at about 4:00 AM, just doing what she loved, when he violently attacked, abducted, and murdered her. This psychopath dumped her body behind an abandoned house in tall grass. This murder was a heinous, senseless, and disgusting crime by a sick, psychopath, fucking animal of a so-called human being. And it pisses me off—no reason for this whatsoever. I talk about Eliza and other murdered female runners in this episode, and I don't hold back. However, if you are sensitive to a little rough language, please be aware, and I apologize in advance for my language. I also replay an interview in late 2020 with Self Defense Instructor Tasha Ina Church. She went through a very uncomfortable episode while running with a male scumbag following her. Tasha knows over 850 Self Defense moves. And even so, this encounter shook her to the core. We talk about that, and Tasha provides valuable self-defense tips and techniques. Even one of them can save a life. Very much worth a listen.

Yet, we all need to make a difference now more than ever. So be aware, be safe, and enjoy your run! Peace everyone!

Running Motivational News (2022 Running Tips Edition) 1-11-2211 Jan 202200:26:45
Hello Runners! Welcome to 2022! I hope your new year is off to a great start. A few episodes ago, I mentioned that I’m very happy to be out of 2021, It was a year I just assume forget for many personal reasons. But hey, I’ve started the new year vertical and that is a good thing. I’m on my way to Maui this week to work on the Maui Marathon course which will be held on April 24th. I’ll also be heading up the Maui Oceanfront Marathon’s Cookie run this Thursday and running the 10K this Sunday. It’s been almost 2 years since I left Maui and really look forward to returning and seeing many of my friends. And yes, I sure miss Maui but must say I am very happy in Denver. Denver is a vibrant city with an incredible running community. I guess I’ve adapted. Well, for the first news segment this year, I wanted to provide some great information to get us off to a strong start and get us going with renewed motivation and inspiration. I found a few articles to help us amp up our running technique, build our strength and share some great pointers for those of us setting running goals for 2022. I signed up for the Las Vegas Half Marathon next month. I have a goal I’d like to reach and have some major work to do to hit it. If you are a new runner welcome to the wonderful world of running. It could possibly change your life. The easiest way to start running is to just start. It’s that simple. Don’t overdo it. You will see improvement every time you run. And, if you haven’t already, go to a local running store and consult a specialist. They will guide you to the correct running shoes, gear, and you can ask as many running related questions as you like. You will leave the store excited and motivated. And please be sure to consult a physician before you start any new exercise programs. I wish each of you an awesome, healthy, and successful 2022! Strides in Recovery – Leslie Gold, Executive Director01 Jan 202200:43:54

Hello Runners,

Happy New Year!

This is a podcast episode I've wanted to complete for several months and what better time than New Years Day.

Earlier last year (2021), I had the opportunity to be in Los Angeles and met up with Leslie Gold, Executive Director, who started the non-profit, Strides in Recovery. We met at Chabad Treatment Center.

Strides in Recovery is a Los Angeles based nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals overcome addiction. They work collaboratively with addiction treatment providers and other recovery communities such as the Beacon House, leading goal-oriented group running and walking programs for people with substance use disorders.

Leslie is an amazing woman making quite a difference in so many lives with Strides in Recovery. Her commitment, dedication, consistency, and passion mixed with her love of running is giving those in their recovery journey encouragement and hope. Strides in Recovery provides a healthy platform for those in recovery to accomplish what they never thought possible. And, this all started from Leslie responding to an Ad.

I walked away from my conversation with Leslie and those in recovery feeling enriched and hopeful, knowing Strides in Recovery is a positive, healthy program that will succeed in changing lives. And you will be touched in some way as you listen. I consider this the most important running episode I've released since I started the Feel Good Running podcast.

Maybe this episode will trigger you to make a difference by volunteering for a recovery program in your community. If you live in Los Angeles, check out Strides in Recovery. It may just change your life!

Thank you for listening to the Feel Good Running Podcast, and please share this with your running friends and on your social media platforms. I would very much appreciate it.

Make a difference today! And remember to be kind to others, even if some are not kind to you. It's good for the soul!

~ Jim

Running Inspirational News – December 6, 202106 Dec 202100:27:09
Hello Runners, How are you? We are now in December, the final stretch of 2021, and smack dab in the heart of the holiday season. And this is the time of the year where we may eat a little more than usual. So running is more important to burn those calories. Right?  Since it is December, there's probably some Jingle Bell run close to you. Sign up for one to keep a goalStaying motivated this time of the year can be rough with the shorter days and possible winter weather where you live. Here in Denver, we've not had our first snow of the season. The temperatures have been warm, with lots of sun, and no snow. Hawaii is getting snow! Not in Denver. I'm not complaining. I like running in the cooler temps but am not a fan of snow. Please keep it in the mountains! I feature three stories that I know you will enjoy in this episode. First is an article about the high expectations of athletes to perform at the expense of their health. This article was written by famed runner Molly Huddle. The second is about Mike Kasamoto, who has a goal to run marathons into his 90's, And, finally, Jeff Kaplan, not expected to live due to a traumatic brain injury after being hit by a car while out running. Enjoy this episode. If you know someone with a unique running story, please feel free to share it with me. Running Inspirational News– November 23, 2021 (Heart Edition)23 Nov 202100:15:17
Hello Runners, Happy Thanksgiving! This is the time of the year when we all give thanks for the blessings in our lives. And we share our time with the people we love over a nice meal. Thankfully, we have that opportunity this year, though we must still be respectful to follow the current restrictions as we travel. I'll be visiting my brother in Pittsburgh this Thanksgiving. Congratulations to all of you who will be running the 2022 Boston Marathon. Everyone who qualified this past year will be accepted! If you've not run Boston in the past and are qualified, go for it. Get it done. Qualifying times are set for 2023, and who knows what the cutoff time will be. In this episode, I dive into the subject of the heart and running. I mentioned two runners last episode that experienced heart attacks during their race. And the most publicized was 34 year old Meghan Roth at this year's Boston Marathon. My family has a strong history of heart issues and I must pay close attention to my heart health. Even if you think you are healthy and in shape, it is good to get a checkup at least once a year. Meghan was in peak shape. Preventive maintenance is the best medicine for sure. I focus on two runners, Marla Sewall and Darlene Anita Scott, both were in shape and had heart issues. They are both grateful to be alive. And I also throw in a heartfelt story that you will absolutely love. Enjoy this episode. Hello Runners, It's November! Can you believe how fast this year has gone? 2022 is upon us, but first, we must get through the long, dragged-out holiday season. Maybe you like this time of the year. I do, but not for over two months. Seriously! Well, the major fall race season is over. The New York Marathon was held last Sunday along with LA Marathon, and both went well. And yes, there were a handful of other marathons in different cities across the USA last weekend, and they too went well. A shout out to all the race directors and their staff, along with every volunteer! You made this comeback race season a success! Thank you from all of us runners. We appreciate you more than you will ever know. Winter is upon us, and shorter, darker days have arrived with the time change. Winter is the time of year where we all must step up our motivation to keep running. It is easy to say to ourselves, well, it's cold or dark, or the bed is nice and warm, so I will just run tomorrow. Just gear up for the weather in your area and get out the door. You will be just fine once you are outside and get the cobwebs out during your first mile. No excuses. Get out there and get it done. In this episode, I have three inspiring running stories. They all have an element of the human spirit and others helping others. You will see the pattern weaved in each story how other runners, spectators and, rescue crews helped other runners.  LAST CHANCE: We still want to hear about your fall 2021 race experience. Just go to feelgoodrunning.com/myrace. There are instructions and a link that you can record a little about your race experience. I'll put a group of them together in a future episode. Talking about your experience in your own words will motivate other runners! Running Inspirational News– October 26, 2021 (Halloween Edition)26 Oct 202100:37:34
Hello Runners, Happy Halloween! I narrowly escaped a haunted house that I was in with a scary guy chasing me with an ax! But I made it out and am relieved that I can keep bringing you new episodes of Feel Good Running. Or perhaps you wish he would have caught me :) The fall live race season is quickly coming to a close. The only other US major remaining is the NYC Marathon on November 7th. However, other marathons and races are happening in the next few weeks, and if your race is upcoming, good luck to you.  A week or so ago, I ran the Colfax Half-Marathon here in Denver, and what a great day. A great expo prior and the day of there were lots of runners, beautiful weather, and lots of finish area activity including a band and beer tent! We even ran through the Denver Zoo and a Fire Station. Hats off to Creigh Kelley, Andrea Dowdy, and the team. They did an outstanding job for us runners!         In this episode, we explore three motivating running stories. In one, I talk about how I lost the joy of running over the past 5-6 months. It's not been fun, but I am on the other side due to my participation in recent live races and training my brain. Also, an inspirational story of a man, Chris Rand, that fell off a cliff a little over a year ago, told he would never walk again, and now is running races. And a story that includes two individuals, Kristian Turner and Kelly Fitzgerald, that found running and transformed their lives.   Oh, and I talk about my fractured wrist and how that all happened. I'm currently in this awful purple cast on my left arm. I did run the Colfax Half -Marathon with this cast. It was not that bad. I could even slip my energy gels in the top of it. Silver lining! We want to hear about your fall 2021 race experience. Just go to feelgoodrunning.com/myrace. There are instructions and a link that you can record a little about your race experience. Hello Runners, Live races! Two USA major marathons, Chicago and Boston, are in the history books. Denver's Colfax Marathon this weekend and NYC Marathon around the corner. What a great feeling if you are a runner! I completed my first race in over two years, the Denver Hot Chocolate 15k. What a perfect day, great weather, lots of runners, finish line fun, and I exceeded my goal expectation. I'll take this high to the Colfax Half-Marathon this Saturday and hope I do ok. And if not, so what, it's a live race. I want to be a part of it no matter how I do. You will enjoy this episode. First, I have a surprise discussion with mother and son Karen Ostlund and Al Balmer, former guests on my podcast. They both completed the 2021 Boston Marathon Monday, and we had a brief discussion on their experience. We also explore three stories; one is tips for if you are either starting or need a motivational boost to get started. Another is for runners approaching or are already in their later years. Is it necessarily true that you will slow down due to age? Find out! And a story about runners, including myself, that have or are running a marathon in all 50 States. You will enjoy these stories! Congratulations to each of you that have run completed your fall race, and if you still have one in sight, good luck! We want to hear about your fall 2021 race experience. Just go to feelgoodrunning.com/myrace. There are instructions and a link that you can record a little about your race experience. I'll put a group of them together in a future episode. Your experience in your own words will motivate other runners! Julia Beckley – Adaptive Athlete – Making a Difference!29 Jul 202201:13:51
Hello Runners! Wowza! It has been a hot, hot summer thus far! It can undoubtedly be challenging to run in training and races. Are you an intelligent runner, staying hydrated and not overheating? I hope so! August is upon us and the fall race season is just around the corner. Where did the summer go? It is flying by so fast. Not fair! My guest in this episode is Julia Beckley from here in Denver. Julia is an AWD adaptive athlete that is making quite a difference. What is AWD, you ask? Athletes with Disabilities. See, Julia is a push-rim athlete who pushes herself to the limit. Unfortunately, however, she has several medical conditions. One is hypophosphatasia, a rare condition that keeps bones and teeth from developing the right way, making them more likely to form incorrectly or break. Since she was eight years old, she has broken close to 45 bones. An athlete from childhood, she has competed in races from a 5K to a 100-mile ultra. And she is making a difference being an advocate to bring push-rim wheelchair inclusion to more Colorado races. Julia is also the Director of the AWD side of the Human Race in Ft. Collins, Colorado, to be held on Saturday, August 5th. Julia is a rock star, and her incredible story will inspire you. Also joining are Eddie Perez and Josh Gomez, who were on her support crew for this year's Colfax Marathon. We recorded this conversation at Runners Roost on Colorado Blvd. in Denver. In my intro, I also talk about the nasty pre-race jitters! Enjoy this episode! And if Julia's story inspires you, please send me a note to let me know your thoughts at jim@feelgoodrunning.com. Thank you runners for listening to the Feel-Good Running Podcast! Please consider sharing this podcast with your running friends and on your social media platforms if you like it. I do not spend money to advertise my podcast. Instead, I try to grow it organically, which is by you, my listeners, sharing it! Thank You! Remember to be kind to others, even if some are not kind to you. The world is terrifying these days, especially in our wonderful country. We all need to make a difference now more than ever. Running Inspirational News– August 28, 2021 (Minisode)28 Aug 202100:25:51
Hello Runners, We all need the inspiration to achieve our goals. Running inspiration comes from many sources, but I believe our primary source of inspiration comes from other runners. Those that have challenged themselves starting with the believability level at close to zero. "I could never do that," "that is for other people but not me." Then they start running, maybe a quarter mile, then a mile, then a 5k, a 10K, a Half Marathon, and then a Marathon. And their life changes. So can yours. This episode, Stan "the man" Cottrell, Erin Azar, and Liz Poliak are stories that will inspire and motivate you. That is my goal, to bring you inspirational stories of other runners so that you too may be inspired to do something you never thought you could do. Believe in yourself! You CAN do more than you ever thought possible. Just look to other runners for your inspiration. I do! It's out there, everywhere! Hello Runners,

It's August, and we are cruising fast through the summer! Finally, fall races are upon us, and I hope you follow your training plans and are ready to crush your upcoming race.

Unfortunately, Motivation "Runday" Monday has gone away. After the initial surge, the participation was not there. But it was fun while it lasted, and I thank those that participated in an episode. Your words inspired runners.

The excellent news, Inspirational Running News, is back. Once the pandemic started last year, running news came to a halt unless you were into virtual races, which I am not. So now that running is back almost in full swing, I'm bringing these episodes back with a vengeance. And I have brought on a colleague from my corporate days to help find the stories and write these segments! I'm excited to bring these episodes to you. They WILL inspire you!

In this episode, I feature three inspirational running stories. Katie Spotz, Malcolm Gladwell, and Clayton Simon. Their stories are sure to inspire you! Enjoy!

Thank you for listening to the Feel Good Running Podcast, and please share this with your running friends and on your social media platforms. I would very much appreciate it.Train hard, run harder, and be well. And remember to be kind to others, even if some are not kind to you. It's good for the soul

Letty Lundi – Marathon Runner and Running Podcast Host05 Jul 202101:07:12

Hello Runners,

It is July! Summer is moving at lightning speed and soon, fall race season, however that will look, will be in full swing. That means you must be in full training if you are doing a fall race.

My guest in this episode is Letty Lundi, co-host with her husband Ryan, of the Marathon Running Podcast by We Got the Runs. Letty started running in her mid-20s and started marathoning in 2009 during law school and completed about 20 of them all around four hours. She became an immigration attorney and kept running marathons here and there, and started taking running seriously after her second child because she wanted to qualify for Boston.

She sought out a coach and started really training for the first time and ran a 3:23 at the 2019 Mountains 2 Beach Marathon. Later that same year, she PRd with a 3:18 at the Chicago Marathon and she plans to meet or exceed that time this fall in Boston!

Me, your host, is also getting serious about running and training for a half marathon in August at altitude and a whole lot of downhill. Feels good to finally have a running goal. Now if my body will only feel that good!!!

Oh yeah, Benjamin Pachev ran a 1:06:33 half-marathon at the Utah Valley Half-Marathon last month. And he ran them in those funny-looking clogs, Crocs. And the whole family wears them. This is amazing.

Thank you for listening to the Feel Good Running Podcast, and please share this with your running friends and on your social media platforms. I would very much appreciate it.

Train hard, run harder, and be well. And remember to be kind to others, even if some are not kind to you. It's good for the soul!

~ Jim

Inspirational Running Quote

"That’s what running does to lives. It’s not just exercise. It’s not just achievement. It’s a daily discipline that has nothing to do with speed, weight, social status, sexual orientation, political affiliation, where you live, what car you drive, or whether anyone anywhere loves you. It’s about the slow and painful process of being the best you can be." ~ Martin Dugard

Running Race Events are Back! – Race Directors Lonnie Somers & Creigh Kelley14 Jun 202101:28:03
Hello Runners, Running race events are back. Yes, and with a vengeance. Boston, New York, Chicago, Tokyo, London, and Colfax marathons are just to name a few coming back this fall. Some of these are predicting 25,000, 30,000, and more runners! Just a few months ago, we were still in the pandemic with no end in sight. That was quick! So how will this work with local governments and CDC guidelines? Well, all of these races are fluid and things can change rather quickly. That is why there are no solid plans in place as of yet. My guests in this episode are two highly respected individuals in the running community. Lonnie Somers, Co-Owner of Hal Sports here in Denver. Lonnie either owns or manages several events not only in Denver but in Colorado and other states. Hal Sports is a full event company. Creigh Kelley has put on over 1,000 running events and is the race director for the Colfax Marathon in Denver. Both Lonnie and Creigh are also racing day announcers. This is a fascinating conversation of where race events were, where they are today, and what they will look like as they evolve post-pandemic. You will go away with a better understanding, appreciation, and respect for Race Directors and running events. Lonnie and Michelle started the Fetal Health Foundation. Twin to Twin Transfusion System (TTTS) should have taken their lives. But the frantic search for information and resources, fetal surgery saved them. Today they are healthy identical twin girls. They created The Great Candy Run and today Hal Sports and dedication to running is their business and passion. Runners, it is getting hot out there as we transition into summer. Remember to take more fluids, run slower in the heat, and try to run earlier in the morning when it is cooler. Thank you for listening to the Feel Good Running Podcast, and please share this with your running friends and on your social media platforms. I would very much appreciate it. Al Balmer – Running Marathons & Remembering Manny24 May 202101:15:37

Hello Runners,

It's almost summer, and things are looking optimistic in the running world. About time wouldn't you say?

On May 5, 2021, my sister-in-law, Lorraine Lynch passed away. She was in my life since I was born. Lorraine was a kind, giving, and selfless woman who was the glue of our family. There are so many memories, and I appreciated her very much. I thank you for all you have done for me since I was born. I will never forget you, and I love you.

My guest in this episode is everyday runner Al Balmer from Austin, Texas. Al reached out, interested in talking about his father-in-law Manny and how marathon running intertwined during his life and death. A very moving conversation. And, Al will be running the 2021 Boston Marathon with his mom Karen as a mother-son team. They are running for the Boston Marathon charity, Community Rowing. They have a hefty fundraising goal to achieve. If you would like to donate, CLICK HERE! It would be very kind of you.

I've been busy the past few months running, interviewing amazing guests for future episodes, two of them very powerful. On the other hand, and sadly, Motivation "Runday" Monday has possibly run its course. I hope you've enjoyed the episodes and runners featured. They were all amazing!

Listenership for Motivation "Runday" Monday is excellent; however, participation not so much. As hard as I have tried to solicit runners to participate, the well has run dry. These episodes are by you and, for you, the everyday runner. That said, I will keep trying for your participation but will put Motivation Runday Monday on hold through June to see if it somehow can be reignited.

If you would like to participate, go to feelgoodrunning.com/mrm. There are seven questions to answer, which you can do so in your own words:

  1. Say your name, where you live (city-state), and how long you have been running.
  2. What initially inspired you to start running?
  3. What motivates you to keep running regularly?
  4. Why is running so important to you?
  5. Who is your running role model? Maybe someone that you look up to for inspiration!
  6. What motivating message would you like to share with other runners?
  7. What is your favorite inspirational and motivating quote, and who said it?

CLICK HERE, and you can record up to 5 minutes of your answers in your own words. If you need more time, you can go back, click again, and record five more minutes for as long as you need. If you get tripped up, don't worry, I will edit it all and make you sound great!

You can record from your laptop, desktop, and even your iPad or tablet as long as it has a microphone. Easy! And share with other runners! It will be your 15 minutes of fame.

Thank you for listening to the Feel Good Running Podcast, and please share this with your running friends and on your social media platforms. I would very much appreciate it.

Train hard, run harder, and be well.

~ Jim

David Zonker & Jim Lynch – Our 50 States Marathon Journey02 Feb 202101:23:06

Hello Runners,

Happy New Year! I hope all is well with each of you, and you are staying safe and healthy!

I've not released an interview podcast episode in January because I've been working on the new Motivation "Runday" Monday quick episodes. They are going well and feature runners just like you. If you would like to be featured on an episode, go to FeelGoodRunning.com/mrm and get all the details.

This is a very special episode to me. On October 21, 2006, my best friend David Zonker and I ran across the finish line of the Breakers Marathon in Middletown, RI completing an 8 ½ year journey running a full marathon in all 50 States. We are officially certified with 50 States Marathon Club.

As of this episode there are 1,619 50 States Marathon Finishers, however not all of them are certified. I'm the 277th and David is the 278th official finisher. It was an incredible journey. Hear us reminisce about our experience. Very special.

I also speak about the stacked up marathons that have been pushed into October. Let's cross our fingers that this pandemic is under enough control that these events can go on live. I'm sure there will be some restrictions, but runners need to run live races.

Thank you for listening to the Feel Good Running Podcast, and please share this with your running friends and on your social media platforms. I would very much appreciate it.

Be well, and be safe runners. Wear your mask in public. Please be kind and courteous to others, and share our love of the sport of running!

Keep running!

~ Jim

Bonnie VanDeraa– A Story of Survival – Redux25 Apr 202201:07:13

Aloha Runners,

How are you? Are you reaching all of your 2022 running goals? Did you run Boston this year? Did you run a race this year? Running is back, and there are so many races.

I'm in Hawaii, specifically Maui. Yesterday was the Maui Marathon. I am the course director and will talk about the race in the next episode. Since I am traveling, I'm re-releasing a compelling episode I did in 2019 that will truly inspire you.

Sometimes, a story is so inspiring that it will bring you to your knees. This episode is a re-release of an Interview I did in 2019 with Bonnie VanDeraa from Vinita, Oklahoma. It is my most powerful interview with this amazing woman and her fight to survive.

On January 23, 2018, Bonnie went through a horrific event that should have killed her. However, her training and skill as an EMT and her willpower, strength, and courage allowed her to survive. In addition, Bonnie is a runner, and though she has not been able to run since that day, she can walk and, on March 3, 2019, she walked the entire Little Rock Marathon.

While recovering in the hospital, she acquired the nickname "Wonder Woman," she lives up to that name! You do not want to miss this interview. It will change the way you approach your day and your life, for that matter.

Since my interview, Bonnie has written a biography titled, "The Making of a Wonder Woman." You can order it here from Amazon.

Thank you for listening to the Feel-Good Running Podcast! Please consider sharing this podcast with your running friends and on your social media platforms if you like it. I do not spend money to advertise my podcast. Instead, I try to grow it organically, which is by you, my listeners, sharing it! Thank You!

Remember to be kind to others, even if some are not kind to you. We all need to make a difference in this world. Happy running and peace, everyone!

~ Jim

Julie Weiss – The Marathon Goddess – We Got This!21 Dec 202001:34:37

Hello Runners,

Happy holidays to each and everyone of you. I hope it is the best holiday you can have under the current circumstances. Do your best to enjoy!

Well the Feel Good Running podcast is now 2 years old. I cannot thank everyone enough for listening, enjoying each episode, sharing the podcast with others and helping the show to grow! I appreciate each and every one of you.

I'm starting something new for 2021, and that is Running Motivation Monday! This will be all about you! It will take your participation. All you need to do is go to this link: CLICK HERE! and leave a message. The message is: 1. What is your name, where are you from and how long have you been running? 2. What has inspired and motivated you to run? 3. Why do you keep running and why is running so important to you? 4. What is your favorite inspirational quote?

Your words, your reasons, your message will inspire and motivate others!

My guest this episode is the Marathon Goddess herself, Julie Weiss. Back in 2012-2013 Julie ran 52 marathons in 52 weeks in support of pancreatic cancer that took the life of her father Maurice. Her book, The Miles and Trials of a Marathon Goddess, goes through her rough young life and turbulent relationship with her father until she discovered running. That changed everything. After her father passed, running took on an entirely new meaning.

Julie is an amazing woman, and her story is so inspirational and motivating! It was a pleasure to have spent time talking to her. You will enjoy this episode. There is also a beautiful little story her husband Coach David Levine tells at the end.

If you would like to make a donation to the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research Click Here.

Be well, and be safe runners. Wear your mask in public. Please be kind and courteous to others, and share our love of the sport of running!

Happy Holidays and Keep running!

~ Jim

Female Running Safety – A True Story about Being in an Uncomfortable Situation02 Dec 202001:00:00

Hello Runners,

We made it to the last month of 2020. One more to go and we start a fresh new year.

Though things will still be rough at the beginning of 2021, let's hope as the year progresses things turn around and improve and bring our lives closer to normal. And especially live running races back without the worry of cancellations.

I hope each of you had a nice Thanksgiving holiday with whomever you could spend it with this year. My girlfriend Tracy and I celebrated with a feast. Seems we were eating leftovers for the following three days. Not complaining.

Tracy and I also walked the Give Back Half-Marathon, a virtual half-marathon, put on by Fleet Feet in Burbank and Encino, California. We chose to do it at the Cherry Creek State Park in Denver. This is a nature filled park and we had a wonderful time enjoying the peace and quiet. Tracy is very strong and did well. I am very proud of her.

If you have been a listener of the Feel Good Running podcast for some time, you know that I am passionate about female running safety. My guest this episode is Tasha Ina Church. She was my guest on Episode #9 back in March of 2019.

Tasha recently posted on her Facebook Page about a terrifying encounter she had while running. Being a professional Self Defense Instructor and even all the techniques she knows, it was terrifying. She tells the story in this episode.

She also talks about her new Self Defense on-line course that will be available on December 8th. And she is conducting a 7-day virtual Empowerment Challenge that will rock your world. It is titled "When Women Rise." This will be held December 7-15 for 30 minutes each day. 12:00-12:30 PM EST, 9:00-9:30 AM PST.

Be well and be safe runners. Wear your mask in public. Please be kind and courteous to others and share our love of the sport of running running!

Keep running!

Vince Varallo – Boston Buddies Run Club10 Nov 202001:07:47

Hello Runners,

Well runners, we are in November and Thanksgiving is upon us. This year will be much different since there will be no in-person Turkey Trot running races. Virtual, yes, but it's not the same. I always look forward to the Turkey Trot race each year, socializing after and then later enjoying a nice Thanksgiving meal. Yes it will be much different this year.

The election is finally over and what a week it was. I waited to release this episode while the events of last week all passed. No matter who your candidate may have been, I hope that now we can all move forward together in a positive way.

Vince Varallo is my guest this episode. In December of 2016 Vince, who trains mostly alone, posted on the Boston Marathon Facebook page looking for others to virtually train with for Boston and to get tips, suggestions and share experiences. He then started Boston Buddies Run Club Facebook Page with four people, and today there are 11,400+ members that actively participate. You do not need to run Boston to be a part of the Boston Buddies Run Club.

On October 21st, an event that Vince organized, The Great American Relay, finished at the Santa Monica Pier in California. It started in Boston on September 15th. The relay ran through 15 states with 379 stages each ranging from 5-22 mile, most averaging 10. The event was a huge success as you can see on the very interactive Facebook page.

Vince and his group organized some other creative and fun virtual challenges. You will enjoy this episode.

I'd also like to congratulate Chris Nikic who made history last Saturday by being the first person with Down syndrome to complete the Panama City Beach Ironman.  What an accomplishment and what a fine young man. Chris...you are a Ironman. And a shout out to my friend Coach Ashley McKenney who also finished the Ironman last Saturday.

Be well and be safe runners. Wear your mask in public. Please be kind and courteous to others and share our love of the sport of running running! And as Vince Varallo says, "Running isn't Cancelled!"

Keep running!

~ Jim

Running News – October 2020 (Minisode)21 Oct 202000:21:17

Hello Runners,

I hope you all are doing well and enjoying the nice fall weather.

Running in the fall is such a pleasure…at least for me. I live in Denver, Colorado so the temperatures are cooling down and running in the 50 degree range is perfect. I am not a warm temperature runner and found it tough the years I spent on Maui.

This episode is a “minisode” that features 4 inspirational stories about real runners that I found and wanted to share with you. Waldon Adams, Michael Beynon, Carrie Kelley, Fidel Ybarra, and Zachariah Cartledge are everyday runners doing extraordinary things.

Enjoy this episode and please share it with your running friends and on social media. And if you have not subscribed to the Feel Good Running podcast you can do so at Apple Podcasts, just click here. And if you could leave a rating and possibly a review that would be appreciated.

Remember to get out and vote, wear a mask and always ALWAYS feel good about YOUR running!

Future Look of Running Events – Andrea Dowdy & Creigh Kelley – Colfax Marathon08 Oct 202001:19:29

Hello Runners,

Welcome to fall. Only three months until 2021, finally. And please, no matter what your political affiliation, GET OUT AND VOTE! Please!!!!!!

Things are changing here at Feel Good Running. The new Intro & Outro are still in production. So I just came up with a temporary band-aid for this episode. The former Intro & Outro have been laid to rest.

I'm pleased to announce a milestone for the Feel Good Running podcast! We have surpassed 10,000 downloads! Many thanks to all you listeners. Thank you for sticking with me and sharing my podcast with your running friends and on your social media platforms. I hope you will continue to do so.

So, this is a very important episode for many reasons. As all of us runners know, the pandemic has changed the face of the running world. Runners, race directors, vendors, charities, sponsors, running event coordinators, volunteers and those who have any involvement with a local running race will get so much out of this episode.

Andrea Dowdy is the CEO and Executive Director and Creigh Kelley is the Race Director of the Denver Colfax Marathon. Together they head up this top premier running event, 7 races in two days that attract over 20,000 runners.

These two amazing, skilled professional individuals join me to talk about the future of running events in a pandemic world. They recently put together "Recommended Guidelines for Small to Large Running Events" that is being embraced world wide.

Be safe runners. Wear your mask in public. Please be kind and courteous to others. Remember to “just show up and always, ALWAYS, feel good about YOUR running!”

Keep running!

Refresh, Retool & Peter Sagal15 Sep 202001:01:04

Hello Runners,

The Feel Good Running podcast will be two years old at the beginning of December. That is quite an amount of time in the podcast world. Many podcast's start up and end just as fast, when it is realized how much work goes into doing an episode.

Being the 34th episode of the Feel Good Running podcast, I feel the current format is getting stale. That said, I am working on freshening things up and retooling! My plan is to amp it down a bit. I'm having a new intro & outro produced so it is not so dramatic and polished. More natural.

Also, as mentioned in Episode 33, I am going to cut the time length of future episodes. With so many podcasts to choose from, I think lengthy episodes are not as appealing unless you are a superfan of the show.

I have some very exciting episodes coming up for you. One that is near and dear to my heart, so much so, I hired a editor/creator to help me with it. This will be my best episode and I know you will enjoy it.

Of course, your suggestions about my podcast are always welcome and needed. You can record a voice message or leave a message at feelgoodrunning.com

This episode is a replay of my conversation with Peter Sagal, host of the NPR News Quiz, Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me and the author of the book, The Incomplete Book of Running. This was recorded in January of 2019.

We had Peter and his wife out to the Maui Marathon (remember marathons?) last October. He spoke at our expo, signed books and took pictures with fans and he ran the Maui Marathon the next day. He said, "That was Tough" but was very happy. He then enjoyed a wonderful week with his wife on Maui. Peter is a true gentleman. You will enjoy the conversation if you have not heard it.

I hope to have the retooled new episode out in a few weeks. Be on the lookout for it and please share the podcast on your social media platforms. And you can subscribe to Feel Good Running on Apple Podcasts. And if you do, please leave a rating. That helps very much!

Keep on running!

~ Jim

Running Inspirational News and Stories – April 12, 202211 Apr 202200:32:25
Hello Runners, Pollen is upon us as trees and flowers come back to life after the winter months. Well, that, of course, depends on where you live. Trees and flowers bloom all year long in some parts of the United States. Not in Denver. We get the sunshine here, but the trees are bare, and the landscape is brown, though the vista views of the snowcap mountains are breathtaking. With Pollen, for some of us, comes allergies. Sneezing, runny nose, stuffed up head, sneezing, and runny nose. It can be not very pleasant, but as runners, we work through it. So be sure to take some Kleenex with you on your run because, undoubtedly, you will need to blow your nose. Here is an article from Canadian Running titled "Should you run with Seasonal Allergies?". Good luck; my allergies are mild but still sometimes irritating. In this episode, I have three stories for you:
  1. Addiction to my running watch. Focus on the Apple Watch
  2. Spencer Dukoff, the deputy editor at Men's Health magazine, ran the 50th NYC Marathon as his first. Spencer's journey is remarkable.
  3. Brandess Wallace, who was a runner, then wasn't, the was again. Hear her story and her love of running.

These stories will motivate and inspire you! Enjoy then! If you know someone with a unique running story, please share it with me. You can Email it to me at jim@feelgoodrunning.com Thank you for listening to the Feel Good Running Podcast! Please consider sharing this podcast with your running friends and on your social media platforms if you enjoy it. I would very much appreciate it, and it will help the show grow. Remember to be kind to others, even if some are not kind to you. It's good for the heart, mind, and soul. Good luck with all of your 2022 running goals; run smart, and stay injury-free. Running News – September 2020 (Minisode)01 Sep 202000:28:04

Hello Runners,

Well, it is now September, and the summer is just about over. Only four more months until 2021. Let's hope things turn around. I am looking forward to the cooler, crisper fall air. Great for running!

This is a shorter episode. I’m in between trips. Just got back from Pittsburgh and am heading to Los Angeles for a week. While there, I will be running with the Skid Row Running Club and recording a podcast. So excited!

There was another woman runner who was just out for a nice run, and a psychopath turned around after passing her then abducted, assaulted and killed her. Her name is Sydney Sutherland, a beautiful 25 year old woman.

Ladies, the reality is when you run you must be aware of your surroundings and take the appropriate precautions to stay safe. Please listen to Episode #9. Tasha Ina Church is a Self-Defense Instructor, and she gives so many tips and techniques that will help you if you find yourself in a dangerous situation.

The Alive and Running Virtual 5K Walk/Run for Suicide Prevention will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2020. I believe strongly in this organization and will be doing this here in Denver. Suicides are increasing due to the struggles of the pandemic. Get involved with this event.

You will enjoy the running-related stories I selected for this episode. Enjoy! Keep running, and be safe out there!

~ Jim

Bobby O’Donnell – “Running Wild”18 Aug 202001:31:08

Hello Runners,

How’s things? Hanging in there? Keeping your motivation level up to run? Are you still jazzed about virtual races or are you burned out on them? I know it is hard to keep focused without a target race.

Bobby O’Donnell, author of the book Running Wild is my guest this episode. At 17, while in Boston to celebrate his dads birthday, he wanted to run the Boston Marathon. Only because he wanted a jacket.

Well, he did run it on April 15, 2013, the year of the bombings. The events of that day changed the course of his life forever. Over the following five years, dealing with PTSD, he tacked it by running all seven continents. An amazing conversation!

Keeping an eye on the 2021 races. Rock n’ Roll cancelled the Denver Half-Marathon and the New Orleans Marathon for next year and will bring them back in 2022. Hope this is not a trend.

I did my first trail run at Green Mountain in West Denver a week ago. Picked up a brand new pair of HOKA Speed Goat trail shoes. Beautiful run and more trails are in my future. But not the shoes. I picked up some groceries on the way home. Brought everything into my place except for my new shoes. Let the car unlocked and the shoes are gone. $160 gone. Bummer :(

Enjoy your week! And be safe runners. Wear your mask in public. Please be kind and courteous to others. And remember to “just show up and always, ALWAYS, feel good about YOUR running!”

Introduction: The “Feel Good Running” Podcast10 Aug 202000:01:38

Hello Runners,

This is the trailer that describes what the Feel Good Running podcast is all about and what you can expect. We hope you will listen and subscribe and become a part of the "Feel Good Running" family!

Kent Wories – Future of the Independent Running Store04 Aug 202001:19:27

Hello Runners,

Well it is August! We are eight months into the worst year in my memory. But we have running to help us get through it. I hope it is helping you!

Moving to Denver from Maui in February, I am bracing for my first fall/winter where the seasons actually change. I've not gone through a winter in over 8 years. Got to upgrade my wardrobe since I am still wearing my island garb during the beautiful Colorado summer.

A recent shock, Halloween costume stores are popping up in Denver. A little early in my opinion and I expect Costco to set up their Christmas displays soon if they haven't already. We are just trying to make it through each day! Geez.

I was invited to be a guest on the "Run Your Day" podcast with host Daniel Hafner. This is a very positive podcast with wonderful messages. Daniel is a very good in-depth host. They are quick hit episodes not exceeding 15 minutes. The episode I am on is 37 minutes since he rarely has a guest. I am on episode #270! That is a lot of episodes. I'm humbled. Click here to hear it.

I'm honored to have Kent Wories as this episodes guest. He is the owner of Runners Roost in Colorado, which is an independent running store. He has six stores he owns outright and three others he licenses out the name but are independently owned by others.

We discuss how he positioned his stores through the pandemic, how he is doing now, and the future of the independent running retail store. A very good talk.

Please support your local running store. They need your business more than ever and we need them to survive. They are a big support of the local running community.

Be safe runners. Wear your mask in public. Please be kind and courteous to others. And remember to “just show up and always, ALWAYS, feel good about YOUR running!"

~ Jim
