Tina Muir – Running for Real – Making a Difference

Épisode 83

mardi 25 octobre 2022Durée 01:11:31

Hello Runners!

Fall race season is winding down, and what a season it has been thus far.

First, the world record at the Berlin Marathon by Eliud Kipchoge with a time of 2:01:09. And a week later, the US Women's Marathon Record fell at the Chicago Marathon by Emily Sisson with a time of 2:18:29. The next US major is in a few weeks, the New York Marathon! We shall see what amazing things happen.

Congratulations to each of you that reached your goal of finishing a race, or two, or three this fall. You rock.

I'm so honored, humbled, and excited to have Tina Muir as my guest this episode. Tina is the founder and CEO of Running for Real, a running influencer, and the #1 running podcast with over 5.5 million downloads. Running for Real is much more than a running podcast; it's a running community! Tina is exceptionally passionate about the environment, and uses her platform to bring awareness to our planet as an environmental activist. Simply a wonderful human being making a huge difference!

In April, Tina ran the Maui Marathon as a guide for a dear friend, Joseph Retherford who is mostly blind. A former elite runner, she abruptly decided to stop running in her prime shocking the running world. She had had enough. Tina had been suffering from amenorrhea, the loss of menstruation, for nine years. She was burnt out and wanted to start a family. So she stopped running.

She reached out to me in Maui to see if we could connect. Unfortunately, it didn't happen because I was highly strapped for the entire weekend and after as the course director. But we talked, and she expressed how much she enjoyed the marathon and its effect on her being in Maui.

I know you will enjoy this episode. We talk very little about Tina's past as an elite runner, and you can find numerous articles written about Tina on the Internet. Most of our talk is on her Maui experience, the environment, the status of races becoming more environmentally friendly, the addition of a non-binary category, and the fantastic running community she is building. We go deep, for sure. I am grateful to call Tina a friend!

So please, please share this episode with all of your running friends and on your social media platforms. It is, in my opinion, one of my best episodes!

Enjoy this episode! And if Tina inspires you, please send me a note to let me know your thoughts at jim@feelgoodrunning.com.Thank you runners for listening to the Feel-Good Running Podcast! Please consider sharing this podcast with your running friends and on your social media platforms if you like it. I do not spend money to advertise my podcast. Instead, I try to grow it organically, which is by you, my listeners, sharing it! Thank You!Remember to be kind to others, even if some are not kind to you. Everyone seems stressed out these days with inflation, politics, and world events. We all need to make a difference now more than ever. Peace everyone! ~ Jim

Eliza Fletcher – Heinous, Senseless, Murder – Safety Tips from Tasha Ina Church

Épisode 82

vendredi 9 septembre 2022Durée 01:06:20

  • Hello Runners! This must stop! Another young woman was violently murdered while out for a run!Eliza Fletcher from Memphis, wife, mother of two boys, and a Kindergarten teacher, was out for a run on Friday, September 2, 2022. She was running at about 4:00 AM, just doing what she loved, when he violently attacked, abducted, and murdered her. This psychopath dumped her body behind an abandoned house in tall grass. This murder was a heinous, senseless, and disgusting crime by a sick, psychopath, fucking animal of a so-called human being. And it pisses me off—no reason for this whatsoever. I talk about Eliza and other murdered female runners in this episode, and I don't hold back. However, if you are sensitive to a little rough language, please be aware, and I apologize in advance for my language. I also replay an interview in late 2020 with Self Defense Instructor Tasha Ina Church. She went through a very uncomfortable episode while running with a male scumbag following her. Tasha knows over 850 Self Defense moves. And even so, this encounter shook her to the core. We talk about that, and Tasha provides valuable self-defense tips and techniques. Even one of them can save a life. Very much worth a listen.

  • Thank you, runners, for listening to the Feel-Good Running Podcast! Please consider sharing this podcast with your running friends and on your social media platforms if you like it. Thank You!Remember to be kind to others, even if some are not kind to you. The world is terrifying these days, as was just experienced in Memphis. Yet, we all need to make a difference now more than ever. So be aware, be safe, and enjoy your run! Peace everyone!

Running Motivational News (2022 Running Tips Edition) 1-11-22

Épisode 73

mardi 11 janvier 2022Durée 26:45

Hello Runners! Welcome to 2022! I hope your new year is off to a great start. A few episodes ago, I mentioned that I’m very happy to be out of 2021, It was a year I just assume forget for many personal reasons. But hey, I’ve started the new year vertical and that is a good thing. I’m on my way to Maui this week to work on the Maui Marathon course which will be held on April 24th. I’ll also be heading up the Maui Oceanfront Marathon’s Cookie run this Thursday and running the 10K this Sunday. It’s been almost 2 years since I left Maui and really look forward to returning and seeing many of my friends. And yes, I sure miss Maui but must say I am very happy in Denver. Denver is a vibrant city with an incredible running community. I guess I’ve adapted. Well, for the first news segment this year, I wanted to provide some great information to get us off to a strong start and get us going with renewed motivation and inspiration. I found a few articles to help us amp up our running technique, build our strength and share some great pointers for those of us setting running goals for 2022. I signed up for the Las Vegas Half Marathon next month. I have a goal I’d like to reach and have some major work to do to hit it. If you are a new runner welcome to the wonderful world of running. It could possibly change your life. The easiest way to start running is to just start. It’s that simple. Don’t overdo it. You will see improvement every time you run. And, if you haven’t already, go to a local running store and consult a specialist. They will guide you to the correct running shoes, gear, and you can ask as many running related questions as you like. You will leave the store excited and motivated. And please be sure to consult a physician before you start any new exercise programs. I wish each of you an awesome, healthy, and successful 2022! Strides in Recovery – Leslie Gold, Executive Director

Épisode 72

samedi 1 janvier 2022Durée 43:54

Hello Runners,

Happy New Year!

This is a podcast episode I've wanted to complete for several months and what better time than New Years Day.

Earlier last year (2021), I had the opportunity to be in Los Angeles and met up with Leslie Gold, Executive Director, who started the non-profit, Strides in Recovery. We met at Chabad Treatment Center.

Strides in Recovery is a Los Angeles based nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals overcome addiction. They work collaboratively with addiction treatment providers and other recovery communities such as the Beacon House, leading goal-oriented group running and walking programs for people with substance use disorders.

Leslie is an amazing woman making quite a difference in so many lives with Strides in Recovery. Her commitment, dedication, consistency, and passion mixed with her love of running is giving those in their recovery journey encouragement and hope. Strides in Recovery provides a healthy platform for those in recovery to accomplish what they never thought possible. And, this all started from Leslie responding to an Ad.

I walked away from my conversation with Leslie and those in recovery feeling enriched and hopeful, knowing Strides in Recovery is a positive, healthy program that will succeed in changing lives. And you will be touched in some way as you listen. I consider this the most important running episode I've released since I started the Feel Good Running podcast.

Maybe this episode will trigger you to make a difference by volunteering for a recovery program in your community. If you live in Los Angeles, check out Strides in Recovery. It may just change your life!

Thank you for listening to the Feel Good Running Podcast, and please share this with your running friends and on your social media platforms. I would very much appreciate it.

Make a difference today! And remember to be kind to others, even if some are not kind to you. It's good for the soul!

~ Jim

Running Inspirational News – December 6, 2021

Épisode 70

lundi 6 décembre 2021Durée 27:09

Hello Runners, How are you? We are now in December, the final stretch of 2021, and smack dab in the heart of the holiday season. And this is the time of the year where we may eat a little more than usual. So running is more important to burn those calories. Right?  Since it is December, there's probably some Jingle Bell run close to you. Sign up for one to keep a goalStaying motivated this time of the year can be rough with the shorter days and possible winter weather where you live. Here in Denver, we've not had our first snow of the season. The temperatures have been warm, with lots of sun, and no snow. Hawaii is getting snow! Not in Denver. I'm not complaining. I like running in the cooler temps but am not a fan of snow. Please keep it in the mountains! I feature three stories that I know you will enjoy in this episode. First is an article about the high expectations of athletes to perform at the expense of their health. This article was written by famed runner Molly Huddle. The second is about Mike Kasamoto, who has a goal to run marathons into his 90's, And, finally, Jeff Kaplan, not expected to live due to a traumatic brain injury after being hit by a car while out running. Enjoy this episode. If you know someone with a unique running story, please feel free to share it with me. Running Inspirational News– November 23, 2021 (Heart Edition)

Saison 1 · Épisode 69

mardi 23 novembre 2021Durée 15:17

Hello Runners, Happy Thanksgiving! This is the time of the year when we all give thanks for the blessings in our lives. And we share our time with the people we love over a nice meal. Thankfully, we have that opportunity this year, though we must still be respectful to follow the current restrictions as we travel. I'll be visiting my brother in Pittsburgh this Thanksgiving. Congratulations to all of you who will be running the 2022 Boston Marathon. Everyone who qualified this past year will be accepted! If you've not run Boston in the past and are qualified, go for it. Get it done. Qualifying times are set for 2023, and who knows what the cutoff time will be. In this episode, I dive into the subject of the heart and running. I mentioned two runners last episode that experienced heart attacks during their race. And the most publicized was 34 year old Meghan Roth at this year's Boston Marathon. My family has a strong history of heart issues and I must pay close attention to my heart health. Even if you think you are healthy and in shape, it is good to get a checkup at least once a year. Meghan was in peak shape. Preventive maintenance is the best medicine for sure. I focus on two runners, Marla Sewall and Darlene Anita Scott, both were in shape and had heart issues. They are both grateful to be alive. And I also throw in a heartfelt story that you will absolutely love. Enjoy this episode. If you know someone with a unique running story, please feel free to share it with me. Épisode 68

mercredi 10 novembre 2021Durée 31:18

Hello Runners, It's November! Can you believe how fast this year has gone? 2022 is upon us, but first, we must get through the long, dragged-out holiday season. Maybe you like this time of the year. I do, but not for over two months. Seriously! Well, the major fall race season is over. The New York Marathon was held last Sunday along with LA Marathon, and both went well. And yes, there were a handful of other marathons in different cities across the USA last weekend, and they too went well. A shout out to all the race directors and their staff, along with every volunteer! You made this comeback race season a success! Thank you from all of us runners. We appreciate you more than you will ever know. Winter is upon us, and shorter, darker days have arrived with the time change. Winter is the time of year where we all must step up our motivation to keep running. It is easy to say to ourselves, well, it's cold or dark, or the bed is nice and warm, so I will just run tomorrow. Just gear up for the weather in your area and get out the door. You will be just fine once you are outside and get the cobwebs out during your first mile. No excuses. Get out there and get it done. In this episode, I have three inspiring running stories. They all have an element of the human spirit and others helping others. You will see the pattern weaved in each story how other runners, spectators and, rescue crews helped other runners.  LAST CHANCE: We still want to hear about your fall 2021 race experience. Just go to feelgoodrunning.com/myrace. There are instructions and a link that you can record a little about your race experience. I'll put a group of them together in a future episode. Talking about your experience in your own words will motivate other runners! Running Inspirational News– October 26, 2021 (Halloween Edition)

Épisode 67

mardi 26 octobre 2021Durée 37:34

Hello Runners, Happy Halloween! I narrowly escaped a haunted house that I was in with a scary guy chasing me with an ax! But I made it out and am relieved that I can keep bringing you new episodes of Feel Good Running. Or perhaps you wish he would have caught me :) The fall live race season is quickly coming to a close. The only other US major remaining is the NYC Marathon on November 7th. However, other marathons and races are happening in the next few weeks, and if your race is upcoming, good luck to you.  A week or so ago, I ran the Colfax Half-Marathon here in Denver, and what a great day. A great expo prior and the day of there were lots of runners, beautiful weather, and lots of finish area activity including a band and beer tent! We even ran through the Denver Zoo and a Fire Station. Hats off to Creigh Kelley, Andrea Dowdy, and the team. They did an outstanding job for us runners!         In this episode, we explore three motivating running stories. In one, I talk about how I lost the joy of running over the past 5-6 months. It's not been fun, but I am on the other side due to my participation in recent live races and training my brain. Also, an inspirational story of a man, Chris Rand, that fell off a cliff a little over a year ago, told he would never walk again, and now is running races. And a story that includes two individuals, Kristian Turner and Kelly Fitzgerald, that found running and transformed their lives.   Oh, and I talk about my fractured wrist and how that all happened. I'm currently in this awful purple cast on my left arm. I did run the Colfax Half -Marathon with this cast. It was not that bad. I could even slip my energy gels in the top of it. Silver lining! We want to hear about your fall 2021 race experience. Just go to feelgoodrunning.com/myrace. There are instructions and a link that you can record a little about your race experience. I'll put a group of them together in a future episode. Talking about your experience in your own words will motivate other runners! Running Inspirational News– October 13, 2021 (Minisode)

Épisode 66

mercredi 13 octobre 2021Durée 38:46

Hello Runners, Live races! Two USA major marathons, Chicago and Boston, are in the history books. Denver's Colfax Marathon this weekend and NYC Marathon around the corner. What a great feeling if you are a runner! I completed my first race in over two years, the Denver Hot Chocolate 15k. What a perfect day, great weather, lots of runners, finish line fun, and I exceeded my goal expectation. I'll take this high to the Colfax Half-Marathon this Saturday and hope I do ok. And if not, so what, it's a live race. I want to be a part of it no matter how I do. You will enjoy this episode. First, I have a surprise discussion with mother and son Karen Ostlund and Al Balmer, former guests on my podcast. They both completed the 2021 Boston Marathon Monday, and we had a brief discussion on their experience. We also explore three stories; one is tips for if you are either starting or need a motivational boost to get started. Another is for runners approaching or are already in their later years. Is it necessarily true that you will slow down due to age? Find out! And a story about runners, including myself, that have or are running a marathon in all 50 States. You will enjoy these stories! Congratulations to each of you that have run completed your fall race, and if you still have one in sight, good luck!
