Key Takeaways:Ā
- Understanding the physiological and psychological impacts of dieting and why they don't work long-term
- The benefits of mindful eating.Ā
- Advice for healthcare professionals to help their patients build a healthier relationship with food.
Copy and paste this phrase into your notes app: "I understand that you're interested in losing weight.Ā Could I suggest that maybe instead of us having this conversation today, we try something a little, surprising. And that is for the next week or two, every time you feel like eating, pause for a moment and check in, ask yourself, am I hungry?Ā See what you notice and then come back in a couple of weeks for an appointment just for this discussion, rather than, rushing through it today. How does that sound?"

In this episode, we dive deep into the world of pediatric growth charts with Kat, the Failure to Thrive Dietitian. We explore how to effectively use growth charts, identify red flags, and provide sensitive and practical advice to families dealing with underweight and overweight children.
Key Takeaways:

- Nutritional Strategies for Underweight Children:
- Add high-calorie foods to what the child already eats, such as butter, cheese, whole milk, and nut butters.

58 | Infant Formula: A Clinician's Guide to Choosing the Right One
Ćpisode 58
mercredi 5 juin 2024 ⢠Durée 45:48
Have you ever been in the formula room in your clinic?Ā Do you ever feel like it's a sea of names and, if you're being honest, you have no idea what you're looking at? I completely understand. When I first started in pediatrics, I felt the same way.
On today's episode, we are simplifying the world of infant formulas. You'll understand the science behind standard infant formula, why there are so many different types, and how to choose a formula that's best for your patient. We'll even give you a simple visual to help organize the different formula types and when to use them. Lastly, we review 3 of the most common infant concerns ā constipation, spitting up, and cow's milk protein allergy ā and which formula you can suggest to provide symptom relief.
Our guest, Alayne, a pediatric registered dietitian, tackles three common concerns: constipation, spitting up, and cow's milk protein allergy.
Topics covered:
- How to know if a baby is constipated or not? (Hint: just because mom says she is constipated, doesnāt mean she actually is)
- What's the difference between rice starch and rice cereal in formula?
- How quickly should I see improvement with a hypoallergenic formula for cow's milk protein allergy?
- What is the typical composition of a standard formula and how are other formulas different?
- What about European Formulas?
By the end of this episode, you'll feel confident guiding parents through the wonderful, sometimes messy, world of infant formula!

53 | Gather 'Round: How to Make Family Meals Doable for Busy Parents With Picky Kids
Ćpisode 53
mercredi 8 mai 2024 ⢠Durée 30:47
Let's be real - getting a meal on the table after a long work day is so tough. Juggling an infant and a wiggly picky toddler makes the mealtime experience exhausting. But yet, study after study proves family meals are crucial to children's mental, physical and emotional heath.Ā In today's episode, we're joined by Registered Dietitian Sarah Schlichter to explore practical tips for transforming family meals from stressful events into joyful experiences.
Key Takeaways:
- Involve the Kids: Assigning each child a job in meal preparation or serving fosters positive exposure to new foods without pressure to eat them. Younger children can wash fruits and vegetables, while older ones can safely cut and season ingredients.
- Mindset Shift: Embrace flexibility and lower expectations to make family meals more enjoyable for both parents and children.
- Location Variety: Consider picnics, eating under the table, or dining outside for a change of scenery.
- Creating Memories: Focus on the experience of dining together (who doesn't love dressing up for dinner?!) rather than solely on the food consumed.
