113. Cellular Stress, Chronic Illness and Living Outside the Margins Set By Our Genes with Dr. Bill Rawls (Part 1)02 Mar 202600:41:46

What if the root of most chronic symptoms isn’t “one diagnosis”… but cellular stress?

In Part 1, Susan sits down with Dr. Bill Rawls, MD to explore what happens when we live outside the margins set by our genes, and how modern life (processed foods, toxins, blue light, chronic stress, poor sleep, sedentary days) shifts cells into a constant survival state. Dr. Rawls breaks down his Five Elements of Wellness and why supporting the cell is the most practical place to start.

IN THIS EPISODE, WE COVER:

  • Why inflammation and chronic symptoms often trace back to cellular stress

  • What it means to live “outside the margins” of our genetic programming

  • The 5 Elements of Wellness: food, environment, recovery, movement, and microbes

  • Why sleep + downtime matter for cellular repair (autophagy)

  • How simple daily movement helps circulation, lymph flow, and inflammation

  • The power of nose breathing to shift the nervous system and exercise stress

Stay tuned for Part 2, where we go deeper into microbes + herbs.

Learn more about our guest Dr. Bill Rawls, MD:

112. Shift Work Is Aging You Faster (Here’s How to Fight Back)23 Feb 202600:51:54

Shift work isn’t “just a schedule.” It’s a full-body stressor that can quietly rewire your circadian rhythm, metabolism, immune function, hormones, and even the way your genes express. And if you’re a first responder, medical professional, or anyone grinding through nights or rotating shifts, this episode is for you.

Susan shares her personal experience working graveyard shift as a police officer (and how fast it affected her body), then breaks down what’s happening beneath the surface: circadian misalignment, blood sugar disruption, inflammation, immune suppression, and the mental health ripple effects that too many people normalize as “part of the job.”

This isn’t doom-and-gloom, it’s empowerment. You’ll walk away with practical strategies to reduce the epigenetic impact of shift work, protect your sleep, support your metabolism, and stay sharp (because your work, and your life, deserve that kind of support).

In This Episode

  • Why shift work is a major disruptor of circadian rhythm, and how that impacts gene expression
  • The metabolic fallout: insulin resistance, weight gain, cravings, and late-night eating traps
  • Immune and mental health effects: increased illness risk, anxiety/depression vulnerability, and brain fog
  • Sleep strategies that actually help (blackout curtains, temperature, stimulant timing, nervous system downshifts)
  • Shift-worker nutrition basics: what to prioritize, what to avoid, and how to simplify meal prep
  • Support tools Susan recommends for resilience (hydration, key nutrients, immune support habits)
  • A breakdown of how shift work affects each pH360 health type, and the most supportive adjustments for each
Why labs matter before symptoms show up (and how often to monitor if you’re on shifts)

103. Somatic and Nature Therapy with Katie Asmus22 Dec 202501:06:51

What if feeling better isn’t about “trying harder”… but about coming back online in your own body, and letting nature do what it’s always done: regulate, restore, and reconnect?

In this episode of Everyday Epigenetics: Raw. Real. Relatable., Susan Robbins sits down with licensed psychotherapist, wilderness guide, and educator Katie Asus to explore the powerful intersection of somatic therapy (body + mind) and nature-based therapy, and how both can influence your nervous system, your choices, and even how your genes express.

If you’ve ever felt disconnected from yourself, stuck in survival mode, or like you’re “getting through life” instead of living it, this conversation is a reminder that health is flow… and you can learn to move with the waves.

In this episode:

  • What somatic therapy actually is (and why the body is your first language)

  • How stress becomes “stuck” in the body, and what release can look like (crying, shaking, exhaling)

  • Why many people struggle to tolerate feeling good (and how to build capacity for safety)

  • How nature can lower stress, support the immune system, and gently regulate the nervous system

  • Practical ways to use the outdoors for healing: senses, grounding, metaphor work, even “talking to trees”

  • The difference between healthy activation (eustress) vs chronic overwhelm—and how to find your flow again

If you’re ready for more presence, more connection, and more aliveness—this one’s for you.

102. Mini Podcast - Oxidative Stress, The Hidden Driver of Fatigue, Aging, and Chronic Inflammation19 Dec 202500:30:15

Oxidative stress is happening in your body every single day, but when it builds faster than your body can manage it, it quietly drives fatigue, inflammation, brain fog, premature aging, immune dysfunction, and more.

In this mini episode of Everyday Epigenetics: Raw, Real, Relatable, Susan Robbins breaks down oxidative stress in a way that actually makes sense, and more importantly, shows you how to work with your biology instead of fighting it.

In this episode:

  • What oxidative stress really is (and why Susan compares it to rust on a car)
  • The most common lifestyle, environmental, and internal drivers behind it
  • Early and advanced symptoms, from low energy and brain fog to inflammation, skin issues, mood changes, and slow healing
  • Why “doing all the right things” can still leave oxidative stress unchecked
  • How the six health types respond differently to oxidative stress, and what each one needs to restore balance

Susan walks through practical, real-world strategies tailored to Activators, Connectors, Guardians, Diplomats, Sensors, and Crusaders — covering nutrition, movement, stress recovery, detox support, mitochondrial health, and supplementation (without the influencer hype).

You’ll also hear universal practices that everyone can use to reduce oxidative load, protect cellular health, and support longevity, without extreme diets, overtraining, or perfection.

Oxidative stress is a normal part of life. But when it becomes excessive, it’s your body’s signal that something is out of balance, and that balance is absolutely something you can restore.

If you’re ready to understand your body better, personalize your health approach, and stop guessing, this episode is for you.

101. Histamine, Gut Health & Why You’re Not “Too Sensitive” with Steven Wright15 Dec 202501:16:16

If you’ve ever felt “reactive to everything” food, smells, seasons, stress, and been told it’s all in your head, this episode will feel like a deep exhale.

In this conversation, Susan sits down with health engineer and gut specialist Steven Wright, co-founder of HealthyGut.com, to unpack the real story behind histamine, mast cell issues, gut dysbiosis, and why so many highly sensitive, driven people are hitting a wall with their health.

You’ll hear Steven’s raw story of IBS, panic attacks, “supplement graveyards,” and getting called “the stinky guy” at work, and how that pain became the catalyst for his life’s work. Together, Susan and Steven connect the dots between histamine, the microbiome, genetics, stress, perimenopause, mold, Lyme, and the nervous system in a way that finally makes sense.

This isn’t about labeling histamine as the enemy. It’s about understanding why your bucket is overflowing, and what you can actually do about it.

In this episode:

  • What histamine really is (and why it’s not the bad guy)

  • The difference between histamine intolerance and mast cell activation, and how they show up in real life

  • The gut–histamine connection: dysbiosis, leaky gut, SIBO/SIFO and DAO

  • Why stress, trauma, and a dysregulated nervous system can keep your symptoms stuck on “high”

  • How genetics (like AOC1, MTHFR, etc.) can raise your histamine risk—but don’t determine your destiny

  • Why perimenopause, estrogen shifts, and even “healthy” habits (like lemon water & fermenteds) can make some people feel worse

  • Practical ideas to start lowering your histamine load: food timing, leftovers, nervous system practices, and smart supplementation to discuss with your provider

If you’ve been collecting protocols, cutting out more and more foods, and still don’t feel like yourself… this conversation is for you.

100. Mini Podcast - Revolutionizing Personalized Nutrition: Dr. Daniella Remy Discusses pH360 & Shae (Part 2)12 Dec 202500:27:51

In Part 2 of my conversation with the brilliant Dr. Daniella Remy, we go behind the scenes of the pH360 / Shae system, the AI-driven, epigenetics-based platform I use with my clients to create truly individualized nutrition and lifestyle plans.

If you’ve ever wondered why generic diets don’t work for you…Why one person thrives on intermittent fasting while another crashes… Or how food can be mapped to YOUR unique body, genetics, history, and environment…

Dr. Remy was one of the scientific architects behind the food section of pH360, and she breaks down how the system actually works: from measurements, health history, and genetics… all the way to your personal food list, recipe library, and dynamic meal planning that evolves as you evolve.

This isn’t another “eat clean” conversation.
This is: “Here’s how to finally feed the body you actually have.”

In this episode:

  • How the pH360 / Shae technology was created and what makes it so different

  • Why nutrient density, timing, and how you cook your food matter more than macros

  • How your age, ancestry, health conditions, stress, and even seasonal changes determine what’s ideal for you

  • Why your food list changes over time (and why that’s a good thing)

  • How the recipe + meal planning system works for your body, not against it

  • Real-world examples from Susan’s own journey using pH360 as an activator

  • How personalized food choices can feel less restrictive and more like freedom

If you’ve been craving clarity about what to eat, when to eat, and how to support your unique body, this episode is your roadmap.

95. My Path to Sobriety, Health, and Hope Through Epigenetics with Callen Hoff24 Nov 202500:50:45

In one of the most powerful conversations on Everyday Epigenetics: Raw. Real. Relatable., Susan and Kate sit down with Susan’s longtime client, Cal Hoff, to share a transformation that’s nothing short of extraordinary.

From battling alcoholism and metabolic syndrome to reversing kidney damage, dropping 50+ pounds, and getting off medications, Cal’s journey shows the power of science, self-awareness, and radical honesty. His story is raw, hopeful, and deeply human.

If you or someone you love is struggling with health, habits, or hope, this episode will stay with you.

In this episode:

• How Cal went from detox to 1,000+ days sober

• The genetics behind cravings, metabolic syndrome, and insulin resistance

• Why his lab markers dramatically improved in weeks

• How personalized epigenetics reshaped his nutrition, mindset, and energy

• The surprising role Diet Coke played in worsening his health

• The Guardian health type and why knowing your phenotype matters

• The emotional work that restored his confidence, relationships, and daily life

• What truly creates a radiant life after decades of struggle

About our guest, Callen Hoff:

Cal is a Guardian to his core — devoted, steady, and shaped by a lifetime of service. From defending classmates as a kid to serving in the National Guard as a Sergeant and squad leader, he has always protected and supported others.

Throughout his career in agriculture, Cal championed conservation farming and farmer success. He served as Board Member and Chairman of the Manitoba/ND Zero Tillage Farmers Association and led the North Dakota Dry Pea & Lentil Council, helping expand pulse crops across the region. Farmers still call him for mentorship and guidance.

But his greatest challenge was personal. After retiring, alcohol dependency quietly took hold, and his health declined rapidly. In fall 2022, he made the courageous decision to enter treatment and commit fully to recovery.

Today, Cal is over three years sober — healthier, more present, and grounded in what matters most. His transformation has restored his energy, deepened his marriage of 46 years to his wife, Julie, and increased the joy he finds with his two grandsons.

His journey proves healing is possible at any age — and that change begins the moment we decide we’re worth saving.

94. Mini Podcast - Alcohol and Sleep: The Hidden Reason You’re Always Tired Part 221 Nov 202500:22:44

You might think that evening drink helps you unwind, but science says otherwise.

In this Everyday Epigenetics: Raw. Real. Relatable mini episode, certified epigenetic human performance coach Susan Robbins exposes the surprising truth about how alcohol disrupts your sleep, your hormones, and your body’s natural circadian rhythm.

Alcohol may knock you out quickly, but it blocks REM and deep sleep, hijacks your melatonin production, and floods your system with stress hormones that leave you foggy, inflamed, and exhausted. Over time, these disruptions can impact everything from memory and recovery to immune function and even genetic expression.

In this episode:

  • How alcohol interferes with REM cycles and deep restorative sleep
  • Why “nightcap sleep” is actually sedation, not recovery
  • The link between alcohol, dehydration, and next-day fatigue
  • How it throws off your circadian rhythm, and how to reset it
  • Practical ways to protect your sleep and support detox pathways

Whether you drink occasionally or often, this episode will change the way you think about your bedtime ritual.

Listen now to Part 2 of the Alcohol Series, and discover why your best night’s sleep starts with putting down the glass.

111. Reviewing My Own Epigenetic Age Test with Two Experts: What It Revealed16 Feb 202601:28:30

What if your “age” isn’t just the number on your driver’s license? In this episode of Everyday Epigenetics: Raw, Real, Relatable, Susan Robbins pulls back the curtain on epigenetic age testing, what it measures, why it matters, and how it can be one of the most empowering tools in your optimization toolbox. Joined by Dr. Lauren Clark of TruDiagnostic, Susan breaks down epigenetics in a way that finally makes sense: your genes are the hardware, but your epigenome is the software, shaped by stress, sleep, movement, nutrition, environment, and the life you’ve lived.

Then Susan brings you behind the scenes of her own TruAge results with Jess Bonthius (medical science liaison at TruDiagnostic), including a real-time walkthrough of her report and what it means for longevity, healthspan, and the pace at which you’re aging. If you’ve ever feared what a test might reveal, or assumed results would be doom-and-gloom, this conversation offers a different lens: data as a guide, not a verdict. You’ll leave understanding how these markers can help you make better decisions now, without panic, perfectionism, or expensive “biohacking” extremes.

In This Episode

  • A clear “Epigenetics 101” explanation (and what DNA methylation actually is)
  • Genetics vs. epigenetics: why your DNA isn’t your destiny
  • What epigenetic age testing measures, and why different tests can give different insights
  • The three key TruAge clocks: biological age, healthspan-focused aging, and pace of aging
  • Susan’s personal results walkthrough (and why lifestyle still matters especially during a hard season)
  • Why low percentile can be a good thing in biological age reporting
  • How inflammation, recovery, and training load can show up in epigenetic biomarkers
  • The truth about “optimization”: simple lifestyle changes vs. expensive protocols

91. Why Sleep Anxiety Keeps You Awake and How to Stop It with Dr. Chris Winters10 Nov 202501:07:19

If you’ve ever laid awake at 3AM, counting sheep, overanalyzing your life, and stressing that you’ll be a zombie tomorrow, this episode, part 2 of our series on sleep, is one  you don’t want to miss.

Today, Susan and Kate sit down with the Dr. Christopher Winter, neurologist, sleep medicine specialist, and author of The Sleep Solution and The Rested Child. He’s the go-to expert for pro athletes, firefighters, and anyone who’s ever wondered, “What’s wrong with my sleep?”

But here’s the twist: according to Dr. Winter, your sleep might not be “broken” at all. In fact, the way we think about sleep, our fears, expectations, and obsession with perfection, might be the real problem.

This isn’t another conversation about blue light and blackout curtains. Dr. Winter flips the script on everything you think you know about insomnia, sleep hygiene, and the infamous “8-hour rule.” You’ll laugh, you’ll learn, and you might just stop fearing those restless nights once and for all.

Because maybe, just maybe… your body knows exactly what it’s doing.

In this episode:

  • Insomnia isn’t a disease, it’s a perception.  Most people who say they “can’t sleep” are actually sleeping more than they realize. The problem isn’t sleep, it’s the anxiety about sleep.
  • The real secret? Be happy awake or asleep. When you stop fearing wakefulness, insomnia loses its power.

This conversation will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about sleep, and maybe even help you stop fighting with your pillow.

P.S. This is part 2 of our sleep series! Check out last week's episode with Dr. Kirk Parsley for another perspective on sleep!

89. Sleep: The Missing Link in Health, Hormones, and Longevity with Dr. Kirk Parsley03 Nov 202501:46:40

What if the single most powerful health intervention isn’t a supplement, workout, or therapy, but sleep?

In this conversation, former Navy SEAL and leading sleep expert Dr. Kirk Parsley joins Susan to share how years of working with the world’s most elite warriors revealed the devastating impact of sleep deprivation, and the extraordinary healing that happens when we finally rest.

From Ambien addiction to brain inflammation, hormones, aging, stress, and recovery, Dr. Parsley pulls back the curtain on what happens when we neglect our body’s most essential repair mechanism. He explains why sleep is the foundation of every other “pillar of health,” how it regulates hormones and epigenetic expression, and why six hours a night is slowly destroying your energy, focus, and longevity.

You’ll hear:

  • The fascinating story of how a high school dropout became the Navy SEALs’ go-to medical doctor

  • What happens in your brain when you use sleep aids, and why they don’t work

  • The connection between sleep, hormones, metabolism, and aging

  • Why stress, inflammation, and sleep deprivation are at the root of nearly every chronic issue

  • How to repair your sleep cycles naturally, and finally wake up feeling restored

This episode is raw, real, and life-changing. If you’ve ever thought “I can get by on six hours,” this conversation will change your mind, and maybe even your future health.

P.S. Stay tuned for part 2 on sleep next week with Chris Winters!

Later, he re-entered the US Navy to attend the military's medical school in Bethesda, Maryland, where he was commissioned as a Navy Officer in 2000.

After completing medical school, internship, and residency, Kirk returned to the SEAL teams as the physician for the West Coast SEAL teams. Kirk was tasked with helping the world's most elite warriors optimize and maintain their performance after eight years of sustained combat. From the way your genes express themselves to how your body handles stress, your connections literally change your chemistry.

In this episode of Everyday Epigenetics: Raw, Real, Relatable, Susan Robbins and Kate King explore the fascinating science of how friendship affects your mental, emotional, and physical health. How healthy friendships boost feel-good hormones like oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin, and why that matters for longevity and resilience.

Why conflict, disconnection, and toxic friendships can actually increase cortisol and inflammation in the body.

110. Walking Isn’t Exercise? Science Says Otherwise09 Feb 202600:34:00

Is walking really exercise, or just something we do between workouts?

In this Raw, Real, Relatable mini episode, Susan tackles one of the most common (and damaging) fitness myths out there: that walking “doesn’t count.” And she’s not holding back.

In a culture obsessed with intensity, sweat, and punishment-style workouts, walking is often dismissed as too easy or ineffective. But science, and real-world results, tell a very different story.

From clients with chronic fatigue and autoimmune conditions to high performers and endurance athletes, Susan has seen firsthand how walking can dramatically improve health, metabolism, mood, blood pressure, blood sugar, and longevity. And research backs it up.

This episode reframes walking not as a fallback, but as one of the most accessible, powerful, and personalized forms of movement we have — especially when done with intention.

Susan also explores how walking works differently depending on your unique biology and health type, why “no pain, no gain” thinking is outdated, and how walking can complement, not replace, other forms of exercise.

If you’ve ever said “I only walk”… this episode might completely change how you see movement.

In this episode:

  • Why walking absolutely qualifies as exercise
  • How walking lowers heart disease risk, blood pressure, blood sugar, and inflammation
  • Why intensity-obsessed fitness culture overlooks powerful daily movement
  • The science behind steps, pace, and long-term health benefits
  • How walking supports mental health, mood, and cognitive clarity
  • Why walking works differently for different health types and nervous systems
  • When walking is enough, and when it should be paired with other training
  • Simple ways to make walking more effective and intentional

79. The Power of Chronobiology: Why Timing IS Everything When it Comes to Your Health29 Sep 202501:11:18

Your body runs on rhythms, and ignoring them comes at a cost.

In this episode of the Everyday Epigenetics: Raw, Real, Relatable podcast, Kate flips the mic to interview Susan on one of her favorite topics: chronobiology, the science of your body’s natural 24-hour clock. From when you sleep, eat, and move to when you’re most creative or focused, your internal timing influences everything.

Susan explains why so many of us are living out of sync with our biology, and how getting back into rhythm can radically improve your energy, mood, digestion, focus, and long-term health. Through personal stories, client experiences, and even a few rants, Susan and Kate make this science both fun and deeply relatable.

It’s not about doing more, it’s about doing things at the right time.

In this episode:

  • What chronobiology actually is and why it matters for your health
  • How shift work, late-night scrolling, and “fitting in” with others can disrupt your natural flow
  • Why early birds and night owls thrive differently, and how couples can navigate these differences
  • The surprising impact of timing on hormones, digestion, and even exercise results
  • Practical steps to align your lifestyle with your unique chronobiology

If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing “all the right things” but still not seeing results, this episode will show you why timing might be the missing key.
