Why Am I Suffering? // Vaneetha Risner25 Sep 202400:41:25

"When you realize God meets us in the pit, that's a way that we can really glorify God, not for what he does, but for who he is." — Vaneetha Risner

Today's Episode: So often in our suffering we ask this question, "If God loves me, why did this happen?" On today's episode, Vaneetha Risner (who is no stranger to suffering), encourages us to ask a different question. She reminds us that we are loved by God and therefore should ask, "Because God loves me, why did this happen?" Vaneetha helps us see how God meets us in our suffering, how our suffering is not without purpose, and how we can grow in hope through it all.

This month's memory verse: "Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful." — Hebrews 10:23

Today's guest: Vaneetha Rendall Risner writes and speaks about suffering. She is the author of several books including a Bible study, Desperate for Hope, and her memoir, Walking Through Fire. Vaneetha and her husband Joel live in Raleigh, NC where she writes at her website https://www.vaneetha.com about struggle and loss and the breathtaking way Christ meets us in it.

Faithful Because...18 Sep 202400:23:52

"I just want to be faithful because he is so faithful." — Vera Schmitz

Today's Episode: How do you hold on to hope? That's what Natalie Abbott and Vera Schmitz are talking about on today's episode. They discuss how easy it can be to lose hope when our hope is placed in our circumstances, our tendency to slowly drift away from God, and his faithfulness to forgive us and restore us when we return to him. They also give us two practical tips for how we can remain faithful over time. It's a great conversation—one you won't want to miss.

Condemnation or Conviction? And How to Tell the Difference17 Jul 202400:26:18

"The narrative that Satan tells us is that we're unforgiven, we're unforgivable, we're steeped in this, there's no way out. And when you feel that way, that's condemnation. And my encouragement is when you hear those voices that you would respond with what is true—you would respond with some of the verses that we've memorized like...'As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.'" —Natalie Abbott

Today's episode: Are you making too much of your sin or too little? Or to put it another way, have you confessed your sin to God, but you cannot forgive yourself? Or do you tend to minimize or dismiss your sin as no big deal? How can you tell the difference between self-condemnation and healthy conviction? These are some of questions Vera and Natalie are answering today. You won’t want to miss this conversation!

Cultivating Thankfulness Together // Rachel Gilson10 Nov 202200:38:39

“There’s something about the practice of [thankfulness] in community that completes it. And that’s God’s design, that’s not a crutch. It’s not more holy if I’m just praying to Jesus alone in my thankfulness—it is in fact the bigger vision of what God’s redemption is that he creates a people that is marked by thankfulness.” — Rachel Gilson

This month’s memory verse: “Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind.” — Psalm 107:8

Today’s podcast: Have you ever heard someone thank an item instead of the person who gave it to them? What is behind that impulse to be thankful, and where should it really be directed? If you’re looking for both a deep dive into the meaning of Psalm 107 as well as some practical questions and tools to help you live out it’s call to thank the Lord, you’re in the right place! Rachel Gilson and Natalie Abbott dig into the details to not only help us see what Scripture is saying, but to lead us in learning how to live lives of thankfulness to God together as his people.

The Unfailing Love of the Lord // Natalie Abbott03 Nov 202200:25:05

“[Psalm 107] is just such a beautiful picture of the gospel, isn’t it? That Jesus came not to save those who were good and righteous and the best, but he came to seek and save the lost. He came for those of us who were his enemies, who were thumbing our nose at him. And that is who our God is, and his love is unfailing, and his deeds are wonderful. Even to people like me who, in so many ways, am undeserving of the kindness of the Lord.” — Natalie Abbott

This month’s memory verse: “Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind.” — Psalm 107:8

Today’s podcast: When’s the last time you took a minute to stop and think about the things the Lord has done for you? And when’s the last time you stopped to give him thanks? If you are looking for ways to grow in gratitude this month, we are right there with you! We are excited to dive into a new verse together this month that calls us to remember and rehearse what the Lord has done: Psalm 107:8. Join Natalie Abbott, co-founder of Dwell Differently, as she walks us through what the context of this verse is and how we can rightly understand and apply it to our lives today. A Warning and an Offer // Vera & Natalie20 Oct 202200:22:09

The Good News about Failure // Jen Oshman13 Oct 202200:50:46

“I know what it is to grow up with my identity rooted in something that is temporary, and something that actually does come to steal, kill, and destroy rather than he who gives abundant life. And so it is with some urgency and compassion and drive that I want others to know that as well.” — Jen Oshman

This month’s memory verse: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” — John 10:10

Today’s podcast: Have you ever thought you understood what a Bible verse was saying only to be surprised after taking some time to study it that what you initially thought wasn’t actually the main point? You’re not alone! Don’t miss this conversation between Natalie Abbott and Jen Oshman where they confess their initial misunderstanding of what this verse means, how the Old Testament helps us to understand what Jesus is saying in John 10:10, how to recognize a thief when they come along, and how to encourage ourselves or someone else who is caught up in a lie. Savor the good news today that instead of coming to exploit others like the religious leaders of Jesus’s day were doing, we have a Savior who came for the exact opposite purpose: to lay his own life down so that his people could have abundant life.

Our October Dwell guest: Jen Oshman is an author, speaker, podcaster, missionary, pastor’s wife, and mom to four daughters. She is passionate about helping herself and the women around her understand and remember that we have a Creator and Savior who designed us to live abundantly with him, and that we were made for so much more than the world has to offer us.

Who Is the Thief? // Natalie Abbott06 Oct 202200:16:46

The Truth That Sets You Free // Natalie Abbott04 Aug 202200:23:40

“If Jesus tells you that you’re a sinner, will you still believe in him? Will you be honest with your sin and your failings? Will you confess that you could never measure up? Will you believe in the Son of God who came not to condemn the world but instead to save it? Or are you going to hold on to your own righteousness and keep justifying yourself?” — Natalie Abbott

This month’s memory verse: “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” — John 8:32

Today’s podcast: What is “the truth” Jesus is talking about in this verse? And what do we need to be set free from? Join Natalie Abbott, co-founder of Dwell, as she digs into the context of the Gospel of John, looks at how this verse connects with last month’s verse (John 6:29), and speaks truth about the Savior who came not to condemn but to set us free.

It’s Not about a Checklist // Vera & Natalie21 Jul 202200:21:04

What Is the Work of God? // Amanda Bible Williams14 Jul 202200:53:24

“It’s not just the head knowledge, in this case, that the work of God is to believe in the one he has sent, to believe in Jesus—but to actually know it to the point that that’s how I’m operating. That that’s the belief that I’m not just knowing with my head but that I’m living out of.” — Amanda Bible Williams

This month’s memory verse: “Jesus answered, ‘The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.’” — John 6:29

Today’s podcast: Have you ever wondered how good works and faith relate to each other? We often are looking for boxes to check and ways to justify ourselves, but following Jesus is a true following—step by step. Join Natalie Abbott and Amanda Bible Williams today as they dig into what this verse means, discuss barriers to belief, and encourage us to truly do the work of God: to believe in the one he has sent, Jesus.

That You May Believe // Natalie Abbott07 Jul 202200:18:44

"If Jesus is our spiritual food, are we looking to Jesus to give us the food that perishes, or are we looking to Jesus for eternal, spiritual satisfaction? Are we looking for him to meet only our earthly needs and earthly comforts, or do we have eyes to see, spiritual eyes to understand our spiritual needs and to find them met in Jesus?” — Natalie Abbott

This month’s memory verse: “Jesus answered, ‘The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.’” — John 6:29

Today’s podcast: What is the message of the Gospel of John? Are we like the crowds following Jesus who were looking to him for the wrong reasons? Join Natalie Abbott today as she walks through the context of our verse for this month, John 6:29.  Find out why the original hearers had a hard time wrapping their minds around this concept, how we can evaluate our own thinking about the work of God, and be encouraged as we clearly look at the point that John is making and the question we all need to answer.

Psalm 103:12 Deep Dive // You Don’t Have to Carry That Around Anymore03 Jul 202400:18:21

“If you are walking around right now carrying a heavy burden of shame and guilt, and you feel like there is no way God could forgive you, you are wrong…that sin has already been paid for by the blood of Christ.” — Natalie Abbott

Our verse this month is a message we all need to hear again and again. Join Natalie Abbott, co-founder of Dwell Differently, as she unpacks the truth of what God has done for his people and the total forgiveness available because of Christ. As Natalie walks through the broader context of Psalm 103, she helps us focus in on the character of God, the benefits he offers to his children, and what to do when we don’t feel forgiven. We pray that as you listen today, you would remember afresh the love God has for you, receive the full forgiveness of Jesus, and join the psalmist David in praising our merciful God for who he is.

Throwback!!! How a Simple Act of Generosity Can Change a Life // Jonathan Almonte26 Jun 202400:27:28

Today we're resharing one of our most inspiring episodes about how God uses ordinary people to make an extraordinary impact. You won't want to miss hearing Jonathan Almonte’s story. He was born into poverty in the Dominican Republic with no education and no prospects. But God changed the trajectory of his life entirely when a 20-something from Michigan decided to sponsor a Compassion child (Jonathan) instead of buying a new car. So the question we're asking today is this: How can you use what God has given you to bless others and point them to Jesus? We’d love to challenge you to consider sponsoring a child through Compassion International as a way to practically love others. Sign up here and receive a bonus Dwell Differently kit!

This month’s memory verse: "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." — James 1:27

The original episode's memory verse: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” — 1 Peter 4:10

Today's Dwell guest: Jonathan Almonte, manager of Supporter Engagement of Compassion Dominican Republic, is passionate about empowering the next generation, bringing hope to the hopeless, and mobilizing the Church into action. He is also the founder of Doulos Liderazgo, Servicio, y Amor, a ministry which provides leadership training to local churches and cares for people’s spiritual and emotional needs through mentorship programs and camps. How Do We Live In Love? // Debra Fileta24 Feb 202200:20:31

“God’s love is so different from the relationships we have in this world, where there’s always the expectation of giving and receiving. God is love. He is the epitome of love. Do You Practice True Religion?19 Jun 202400:25:05
“Are the actions plugged into faith, or are they unplugged? What are we operating out of? Are we operating out of a duty to do these things because that's the right thing to do? Or are we plugged into faith and motivated by the love God has for us to do the things we're called to do?" — Vera Schmitz

What's the difference between false religiosity and true religion? That's the question that Natalie Abbott and Vera Schmitz, sisters and co-founders of Dwell Differently, are answering on today's episode. Find out how religion can be something that pleases God himself, something that reflects his character and the beauty of the gospel. They also talk about what threatens to pollute their faith, their own struggles against those temptations, and how loving the least of these keeps our hearts pure.

This month’s memory verse: "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." — James 1:27
