Gender Inequality in Urban Spaces: Data, Policy & Advocacy | Giulia Sudano, Period Think Tank

In this episode, we discuss a wide range of topics, including the impact of gender inequality on the built environment, the mission and approach of Period Think Tank, and its initiatives to address gender inequity through data activism, advocacy, and lobbying. We also explore the challenges of bias in technology, the importance of community involvement in tackling social and environmental issues, and many other topics related to data, advocacy, and gender equality in cities with Giulia Sudano, co-founder of Period Think Tank. Giulia graduated in International and Diplomatic Sciences from the University of Bologna. After obtaining a Master’s degree in Communication, Fundraising, and Campaigning, she worked at the OPIMM Onlus Foundation in Bologna from 2013 to 2023. She now works at AIDOS (Italian Association for Women in Development) as a fundraiser and communication officer. She was also the founder and president of the Candidamente Association, which promotes active citizenship in Bologna, from 2010 to 2017. From 2017 to 2020, she served as president of the Orlando Association, which created and manages the Women's Center. At the end of 2020, she co-founded the Period Think Tank association, where she coordinates institutional and advocacy activities, conducts training on data feminism and gender impact assessment, and participates as an activist in numerous local and national networks to fight gender inequalities. . #genderinequality #datafeminism #advocacy . Liat is a leading expert in design for social innovation, the founder of HousingLab, and the Director of Impact Housing Foundation. She is passionate about creative processes and developing new tools for design thinking and innovative strategies towards sustainability. As the founder of HousingLab, a laboratory for urban innovation in housing, she facilitates and coaches processes of urban housing renewal. As the Director of Impact Housing Foundation she has been exploring how private investments may be used to generate more social housing options. She also coordinate and manage local and European projects aiming at improving the urban lifestyle from an environmental and social point of view. She has been the Lead Expert of the ROOF URBACT network aiming to end homelessness. She is the project manager of the Pilot action of the H2020 project Centrinno. In the past she has also worked for the municipality of Milano in the framework of BoostINNO – boosting social innovation EU URBACT project. She also teaches In IES abroad Milan and holds a PhD in design from Politecnico di Milano as well as a master's degree in Service Design and a bachelor degree in Industrial Design. She likes living in the city despite of everything, believing that good relationships between neighbours can make life easier and more fun. Liat does not own a car or a TV. Shawn currently teaches BA Architecture at Central St Martins, UAL, Professional Practice at the Architectural Association and works at housing specialist HTA Design LLP. His work has been featured in The Guardian, The Financial Times and Wallpaper* Magazine. Previously, a New Architecture Writer, Shawn has written for the Financial Times, VICE, Wallpaper*, The Architects' Journal, RIBAJ, ICON, FRAME, OnOffice and Disegno. He has also spoken on Sky News, The Guardian and at talks organised by the Architecture Foundation, South London Gallery and Royal College of Art. Shawn is also a Trustee of the Museum of Architecture and sits on the Advisory Board of Open City's Accelerate Programme. A few weeks ago, Design to Connect had the opportunity to discuss placemaking, community building, and fostering a sense of belonging in cities with Hans Karssenberg, a partner, public developer, and founder of Stipo, based in Amsterdam. . Hans loves great places where people can meet. He is devoted to human scale, mingled, multi-layered cities, great public space, involved communities, and true sustainability. With his team STIPO, they want to be involved in the long term in developing the city, sharing knowledge and training courses. He loves working with people of all kinds, interests, and disciplines, creative and surprising processes, and thinking and acting short and long-term. He works on human-scale area development, transformation, placemaking, the city at eye level, organic methods, inclusive regeneration, the creative economy, social innovation, co-creation, community development, user-based streets, squares and parks, the civic economy, co-created visions and strategies, system change. Their multidisciplinary team for urban development, STIPO, stands for Strategic and Innovative Product development in an Open source environment. They innovate by sharing, work open source, and are based in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Athens, and Milan. He likes to work both on a local, city, and regional level and is involved in international exchange. Last week, and for the first time, we had a conversation with a sociologist. And I must say that, looking at concepts such as #feminist movements, #urbansafety, and #care from her point of view was extremely interesting! . Anna Bednarczyk is a sociologist and researcher. She is currently a research fellow at the K LAB at the Technical University in Berlin. She works on a PhD project about feminist movements, urban safety, and care work in Argentina at the Graduate School for Social Research in Warsaw. She holds a MA in Sociology from Jagiellonian University, Poland, and in Sustainable Urban Governance and Peace from the University for Peace, Costa Rica. After conducting research on urban justice in Medellín she started working on various projects advocating for strengthening participatory urban governance in Poland. She moves between formal and informal organizations and activities. She was a project manager in the International Visegrad Fund, a senior researcher in the project on the holistic model of girls’ empowerment, and currently, she cooperates with non-governmental organizations CISCSA Feminist Cities and Red de Mujer y Habitat on integrating age and gender perspective in urban agendas. Apart from researching and coordinating projects, she experiments with moviemaking. She co-produced and co-directed with Inga Hajdarowicz a documentary La Comuna 9.
