The Conversations on African Philanthropy podcast features leaders and game-changers whose work has enabled social investment and philanthropy in Africa. Hosted by the Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment (CAPSI), the podcast supports the mission of promoting social change by fostering a culture of effective giving and corporate social and civic responsibility.
Founded in 2017 and situated within Wits Business School, CAPSI aspires to nurture a new generation of African experts, researchers and leaders in African Philanthropy, Social Investment and related disciplines. The Centre serves as a source of knowledge and learning, a platform for partnerships, and a hub for community engagement for participating organisations and institutions across and for the benefit of Africa. CAPSI’s offerings include postgraduate academic programmes, short courses, masterclasses, post-doctoral fellowships, publications and partner-collaborated research and development projects in social investment and philanthropy.

She is the Executive Director at the African Women’s Development and Communication Network (known as FEMNET). Vuyiswa Sidzumo is the Director of the Ford Foundation office in Southern Africa. Prior to joining the foundation, she spent 12 years at the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation serving as an associate program officer and program officer before becoming the country director for South Africa in 2009. Throughout her illustrious career, Vuyiswa has pioneered work in local philanthropy in South Africa and in the U.S. and currently serves as chair of the steering committee of the Africa Grantmakers’ Affinity Group amongst others.

Alice Brown is the head of Sojourner, Tubman, Wells & Co. Consulting, an attorney with extensive experience in social justice philanthropy and civil rights litigation and advocacy. She is the founder of Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation (WMCF), Egypt's first community foundation, and recently established the Waqfeyat Misr Foundation. Marwa has also developed several curricula focusing on nonprofit management, philanthropy, and social entrepreneurship and lectures at the Public Policy and Administration Department at the American University in Cairo.

Mamadou Biteye is the Executive Secretary of The African Capacity Building Foundation and former Vice President for Inclusive Growth, Global Social Impact for Central Europe, Middle East and Africa at VISA, based in Dubai. He was the former Managing Director for The Rockefeller Foundation Africa Regional Office, overseeing initiatives in youth employment, health, philanthropy, agriculture, and food security. He also serves as an advisor and board member for various international organisations such as the World Bank, the World Economic Forum, and the African Leadership Network. Mamadou has over two decades of experience in strategic leadership, advocacy and campaigning, community development, and capacity building with extensive field experience in Africa and globally.
In this episode, he takes us through the mandate of the African Capacity Building Foundation, re-imagining philanthropy institutionalisation and his journey in the space.
