The Conversations on African Philanthropy podcast features leaders and game-changers whose work has enabled social investment and philanthropy in Africa. Hosted by the Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment (CAPSI), the podcast supports the mission of promoting social change by fostering a culture of effective giving and corporate social and civic responsibility.
 

Founded in 2017 and situated within Wits Business School, CAPSI aspires to nurture a new generation of African experts, researchers and leaders in African Philanthropy, Social Investment and related disciplines. The Centre serves as a source of knowledge and learning, a platform for partnerships, and a hub for community engagement for participating organisations and institutions across and for the benefit of Africa. CAPSI’s offerings include postgraduate academic programmes, short courses, masterclasses, post-doctoral fellowships, publications and partner-collaborated research and development projects in social investment and philanthropy.

Evans Okinyi is the CEO of the East Africa Philanthropy Network (EAPN), a regional network of over 80 organisations developing and nurturing philanthropy in East Africa. Memory Zonde-Kachambwa is a pan-African intersectional feminist, gender, and women’s rights activist. She grounds her work on feminist principles. She is the Executive Director at the African Women’s Development and Communication Network (known as FEMNET). Memory is a dynamic leader in movement-building, feminist organising in policy advocacy, and networking with over 18 years of experience developing, managing, and implementing programmes promoting women's and girls rights regionally and globally.

Vuyiswa Sidzumo is the Director of the Ford Foundation office in Southern Africa. Prior to joining the foundation, she spent 12 years at the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation serving as an associate program officer and program officer before becoming the country director for South Africa in 2009. Throughout her illustrious career, Vuyiswa has pioneered work in local philanthropy in South Africa and in the U.S. and currently serves as chair of the steering committee of the Africa Grantmakers’ Affinity Group amongst others.

In this episode, Vuyiswa provides an overview of the landscape of philanthropy based on her experiences in the diverse roles she has occupied. She also delves into the matter of civil society leadership succession and offers insights into the organisation's grant-making.

Alice Brown is the head of Sojourner, Tubman, Wells & Co. Consulting, an attorney with extensive experience in social justice philanthropy and civil rights litigation and advocacy. She is an international human rights advocate and an expert on the use of the law for the public good. She worked for the Ford Foundation for nearly two decades and many of these years were spent in leadership positions, engaging in innovative grant-making to support visionaries working in crucial areas such as human rights, social justice, constitutions, and reconciliation.

Marwa El-Daly is a development practitioner, and social entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience in programme, business development, and training. She is the founder of Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation (WMCF), Egypt's first community foundation,  and recently established the Waqfeyat Misr Foundation. Marwa has also developed several curricula focusing on nonprofit management, philanthropy, and social entrepreneurship and lectures at the Public Policy and Administration Department at the American University in Cairo. 

In this episode, she takes us through her work at the Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation, Waqf (Arabic for endowment), and creating a movement of academics in philanthropy.

Mamadou Biteye is the Executive Secretary of The African Capacity Building Foundation and former Vice President for Inclusive Growth, Global Social Impact for Central Europe, Middle East and Africa at VISA, based in Dubai. He was the former Managing Director for The Rockefeller Foundation Africa Regional Office, overseeing initiatives in youth employment, health, philanthropy, agriculture, and food security. He also serves as an advisor and board member for various international organisations such as the World Bank, the World Economic Forum, and the African Leadership Network. Mamadou has over two decades of experience in strategic leadership, advocacy and campaigning, community development, and capacity building with extensive field experience in Africa and globally.

In this episode, he takes us through the mandate of the African Capacity Building Foundation, re-imagining philanthropy institutionalisation and his journey in the space.
