Recently, Rob has started exploring how society and organisations can encourage male friendships and positive male communities. That is what they discuss today.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • A lot of business leaders present themselves as unrelenting decision-makers who are always driving forward, as being alphas.

  • Most of the world´s biggest business leaders are not naturally extroverted or charismatic.

  • Great leaders don´t have to posture, they use their words and actions to motivate and lead.

  • Being authentic and vulnerable resonates with others.

  • If you never say sorry, admit someone else´s idea is better than yours or show empathy, you end up isolating others.

  • Maintaining a persona burns a lot of energy, you really do need to be yourself.

BEST MOMENTS

“I´m not alpha at all.”

“People know that they (authentic leaders) mean it because of the way they behave.”

“You have to be you to be the best you can.”

“How genuine they are gives me goosebumps…it´s important to encourage people to be real.”

“Friendship is not needing to worry about who you are and how you come across.”

“Radical candour is where you care personally and challenge directly… you are more likely to find that in friendship groups.”

Why Understanding How Your Mind Works is Essential with Mark Newey

Épisode 192

mercredi 13 décembre 2023Durée 01:05:37

For this episode, David is joined by Mark Newey - the UK’s number one radical self-discovery coach, teacher, disrupter and protagonist. Mark explains how he helps people to uncover how their subconscious, which governs 91% of their decisions, works. Once someone has done this and learned who they actually are they can take full control of their lives and achieve what they really want.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • 91% of how we live is about our subconscious. If you don’t understand the role your unconscious mind is playing in your decisions you will become stuck.
  • Your brain filters everything through a program that it has created based on your experiences. If that filter is flawed, which it often is, you will always struggle.
  • The most important relationship in your life is the one you have with yourself.
  • The key to happiness and fulfillment is being comfortable with who you are. If you hate yourself, which most people do, life is pretty awful.
  • Being vulnerable is an important step towards being authentic, so you can become comfortable with who you are.
  • Stress is a warning signal that something is not quite right.
  • Just putting your head down and getting on with it, is not the answer. At some stage, you will be overwhelmed.
  • When you are constantly stressed, your ability to do anything well drops by 40%. If you feel stressed work out why and make the necessary changes.

BEST MOMENTS
‘Stress is not a mental health issue.’

‘Keep calm and carry on – worst advice ever.’

‘We blokes need to learn how to talk to our mates and open up.’

The CALM series 16 Accountability - Self Accountability

Épisode 189

vendredi 1 décembre 2023Durée 30:42

This is the 16th episode in David’s CALM series that is designed to help you to become a better leader. This time around he covers self-accountability. Leaders who do not hold themselves accountable will not be trusted and followed by their teams, so this is an important episode.

In it, David shares seven effective ways to create more accountability for yourself and includes exercises you can do to practice those methods.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Accountability is defined as delivering what you promise in the eyes of others.
  • Both you and your team members need to commit to the expected outcomes, so that you move forwards together.
  • If you are not providing your team with the right support and tools you are not being accountable.
  • Be open about the challenges you are facing.
  • Set the right goals and continually work on being the person you need to be.
  • Accountability buddies make the chances of your achieving your goals soar to 90%.
  • Do things that make you commit in advance, e.g. put some cash in an account that you can only spend when you have achieved a certain goal.
  • Create a wins list and add to it daily to keep yourself motivated. The wins you add to it don’t have to be huge ones.

BEST MOMENTS
‘It starts with you…accountability cuts two ways,’

‘Focus on who you need to be.’

‘Ask - what’s the most important thing I should be doing right now? Do this on a regular basis.’

‘Change your mindset from having to do stuff to the fact that you get to do things. ’

ABOUT THE SHOW

  • When you raise your frequency, answers start to come.
  • When you are in a highly emotional state, pause. Do not let yourself make important decisions while in this heightened state.
  • Be aware of letting your ego lead you in the wrong direction.
  • You have got to be curious and try things out. That is when your genius comes out.
  • Address low self-worth. If yours stays low, you will continue to attract low-paying, unreliable clients.
  • Push yourself out of your comfort zone, but be careful not to overdo it.

BEST MOMENTS
‘Starting small is critical.’

‘Our spirit is where our genius is’

‘Curiosity is a beautiful gateway.’

‘You have to be ok with pressure. OK with getting it wrong.’

ABOUT THE SHOW
People with purpose make a difference. Imagine a world where more people can just get their purpose out of them, into a plan and then actually make it happen. What a world that would be - People everywhere finding meaning and harnessing that to bring inspiration and energy to each and every day, changing lives for the better. But no one ever achieved anything on their own - we all have something unique to bring and that means we all have to play our part - if we want to go far we have to go together and lead or serve towards a vision of the world we want to see. Everyone has a story to tell, and this show is where these stories come to life.

Accountability - Psychological Safety

Épisode 187

vendredi 24 novembre 2023Durée 33:10

In this episode, David continues his Calm Leadership Series by sharing why it is vital for leaders to create a workplace in which people feel psychologically safe.  This is important because if people are working in an environment where the boss goes nuts they will not fell safe enough to take on extra responsibility.

There are 7 things you can do to create psychological safety in the workplace. David explains what they are and how to implement them in any kind of business.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • People are 10 times more likely to leave a business because of a toxic culture than for any other reason.
  • Only 1 in 5 people feel comfortable giving constructive feedback in the workplace.
  • Be engaged when you listen to others.
  • Understand others. What makes them tick can be very different from what motivates you.
  • Most people do not want to let others down, but as a leader owning up to your own mistakes is important.
  • Be open and honest with people and call things what they are.
  • When things go wrong, you need to identify the underlying problem, but do so in the right way. David explains, in detail, how to do this in an non-combative and constructive way.
  • If you see behavior that is not concurrent with your values and the way you work, call it out.
  • Systemize feedback within your business.
  • Make sure that one type of person does not dominate.
  • If you don't agree with someone’s views, respectfully explain why that is. Don't leave them feeling their input is not of value and welcome..

BEST MOMENTS
‘Empathy is massive, especially when it comes to making other people feel safe.’

‘People need to feel safe physically and psychologically. It is a fundamental human need.’

‘Say sorry when you make mistakes.’

‘Be aware of the language that you use.’
