$10k Months as a Therapist in the Midwest with Jen Nobo25 Sep 202400:42:23

Jen Nobo is a millennial therapist, based in the Midwest. She primarily works with Gen Z and millennial women who struggle with anxiousness and people-pleasing tendencies. Jen uses a modern approach when working with her clients. She prides herself on being a friend who is objective, while also holding you accountable as you work through the ‘uncomfy’ stuff.

Jen and I started working together in early 2023, when she joined my Mastermind. At that time, she had an Instagram page with a few thousand followers. We focused on her niching down so she could position herself as an authority in her space, and grow her private practice.

Since then, Jen has grown to over 30k followers on Instagram. She’s also increased her rate and quadrupled her income. And yeah…she’s done all of this in less than two years, which is freaking AMAZING!!

In this episode, we cover:

  • The biggest shift that happened for Jen as she started creating content on Instagram to grow her private practice
  • Why Jen was offering ‘negotiated rates’ to her clients in the beginning
  • How Jen has successfully RAISED her rates + filled her caseload
  • Jen’s turning point on Instagram with not only one, but TWO reels going viral
  • How Jen’s income has quadrupled since starting her Instagram
  • Advice for charging premium rates and building your caseload, regardless of where you live

Why is Everyone Else Growing on Instagram and I’m Not?11 Sep 202400:24:55

Are you a therapist who’s showing up on Instagram, but you’re not getting the results you want?

Maybe you’re already posting content to your page, but your following isn’t growing. Maybe you’re stuck in the ‘200 view jail’ and your engagement feels like it’s never gonna come back. Despite putting in what feels like solid effort, you still haven’t gained a client from Instagram.

In this episode, I cover:

  • Realizing that the Instagram algorithm isn’t really out to get you
  • Adjusting your expectations + why your content may not be resonating with your ideal client like it should be

I can’t believe it, but my podcast is officially LIVE, and I’m so excited to be sharing my very first episode with you today!

I really want to show you what’s possible as a therapist, and give you the courage to take action on your goals and dreams. I believe that EVERY single therapist should be making 6+ figures in their practice - that’s my personal mission, and since helping hundreds of therapists do just that, I know it’s 100% possible!

In today’s episode, I’m discussing what my career path to becoming a million dollar Instagram therapist looked like, and the many ups and downs I experienced along the way.

I have chosen to do the scary, brave stuff on my journey, and while it hasn’t always been smooth sailing, it has brought me the results (and the life) I desired. I hope my story encourages you to step out of your comfort zone and take big, bold moves, regardless of where you are with your therapy practice!

In this episode, I cover:

My Tough Decision to See Less Therapy Clients02 Oct 202400:22:53

One of the things I consistently share on Instagram is my monthly income report. You may have noticed that my income from 1-1 therapy clients isn’t as high as it used to be. In fact...it’s pretty low, which has led people to ask me WHY that is.

Well...that’s because I made the tough decision to see less therapy clients.

You may be thinking ‘why the heck would you do that?!”, or questioning if it’s possible for YOU to make 6 figures seeing 1-1 therapy clients.

I knew I wanted to dedicate an entire episode to this topic and talk more in depth about WHY I decided to see less therapy clients. Quite a bit has changed for me along the way, so let’s get into it!

In this episode, I cover:

  • My first year in private practice with ONLY1-1 therapy clients
  • What happened when my Instagram really took off
  • My major business growth in 2022 + what needed to change in 2023
  • Why I intentionally chose to see less 1-1 therapy clients in 2023 and what this looked like
  • Why you MUST give yourself permission to do what’s best for you and your business

The Exact Things I’d Focus on if I Was Starting Over on Instagram06 Nov 202400:32:22

I started with ZERO followers. I’ve grown both of my Instagram accounts from 0 to 10k in under a year. It took a LOT of trial and error as I was growing my first therapy page (@sitwithkelly), and I for sure made my fair share of mistakes. All of my hard work and consistency helped me have an ‘easier’ experience with my second page.

I’ve learned sooo much along the way, but I’ve also been an Instagram therapist for 4 years now! If you’re a brand new therapist on Instagram (or even if you aren’t), I don’t want you to compare your journey to mine.

I want to share with you 9 key things that I would focus on, if I was starting over as a new Instagram therapist. Some of these items will take you more time than others (especially in the beginning). But...as you learn, you’ll get better and faster over time.

In this episode, I cover:

  • What it was like growing my first Instagram page vs. my second
  • Nine things I would focus on as a new Instagram therapist

The #1 Driver of Results in My Business30 Oct 202400:16:03

In today’s episode, I’m talking about the number one driver of results in my business. If I had to sum it up in one word, the number one driver of all my results in my business has been CONSISTENCY.

Consistency probably doesn’t mean (or even look) the same for everyone. I do believe that it’s crucial if you want to continue growing your private practice though! Consistency allows you to build trust and deepen relationships with your community, and get realllly good at one particular thing.

At the end of the day, showing up consistently on Instagram NEEDS to be a priority. This is the way you’re going to succeed in your business, and make more of a lasting impact with your ideal client!

In this episode, I cover:

  • What consistency looks like for me in MY business
  • Reasons why consistency is so important in business
  • Why showing up on Instagram consistently needs to be your priority + ways to do this
  • Why you need to get really good at one thing before adding MORE to your plate

Stop Worrying About These 10 things on Instagram (and what to focus on instead)08 Jan 202500:33:01

To kick off the new year, I wanted to share 10 things I want you to stop worrying about on Instagram.

I get sooo many questions about these topics, and frankly, they are NOT important.

They’re not things that are going to ‘move the needle’, and really grow your Instagram page like I know you want to.

It’s time to leave this stuff behind in 2024. Instead, let’s focus on what IS going to bring you bigger and better results!

In this episode, I cover:

  • The timing of your Instagram posts
  • Getting stuck on creating the ‘perfect’ pieces of content
  • Using hashtags in your posts
  • Creating reel cover photos
  • Meaningless engagement on Instagram vs. building an actual community there
  • What really matters when it comes to your background for photos & videos
  • Showing MORE of you & your face on Instagram
  • Talking more in your reels so people get to hear your voice
  • Letting go of your fear of saying the ‘wrong’ thing

BTS From $45/session to $1 Mil/Year01 Jan 202500:31:39

To kick off the new year, I wanted to re-air one of my most popular episodes from 2024. I’m even MORE excited to share this one again, because I can now say that 2024 was my first 7-figure year in business!!

I can’t wait to give you more of a behind-the-scenes look once I have all of my final numbers. In the meantime, enjoy this value-packed episode that will show you what’s REALLY possible + inspires you to dream bigger!

In today’s episode, I’m giving you a BTS look at how I went from making $45/session to $1 million/year as a therapist.

My best advice for you is to take some time and reflect on what you want your private practice and work/life balance to look like - it doesn’t have to look like what every other therapist out there is doing.

You absolutely CAN have a sustainable business that you love (and also makes you a sh*t ton of money), regardless of what anyone else tells you. I believe in you and what you have to offer; I hope this episode encourages you to take action and bet on yourself!

In this episode, I cover:

  • Where my career path started in 2014 + what ultimately led me back to therapy and starting my own private practice
  • My decision to go ‘all in’ with my business and step away from my safe, 6-figure career
  • Realizing that trying something new doesn’t mean it’s going to feel hard or uncomfortable forever
  • How learning marketing impacted my business growth + the power that comes from betting on yourself and your dreams
  • What it’s been like for me to hustle & build my business + ‘scaling back’ in my therapy practice
  • Getting crystal clear on what you want your therapy practice to look like

My Tough Decision to See Less Therapy Clients25 Dec 202400:29:16

In honor of Christmas, today’s episode is going to be one of my MOST popular episodes that aired a few months ago!

This time of year is the perfect time to sit down and reflect on what went well and what you want to improve upon for the coming year. I’ve found that being intentional and giving myself permission to do things differently is super important.

This has allowed me to create a business that is both enjoyable AND sustainable, which leads me to today’s topic!

I knew I wanted to dedicate an entire episode to this topic and talk more in-depth about WHY I decided to see less therapy clients.

How to Get Therapy Clients With $0 to Spend on Marketing22 Jan 202500:22:15

How unusual is it that therapists can start their business with virtually NO startup costs?

When you stop and think about it…it’s actually pretty cool!

Starting part-time with your private practice is very doable with virtual therapy. As therapists, we can start with very little risk or financial investment. But...we can make an INCREDIBLE income for ourselves and our families!

Even if you’re brand new and have $0 to put into your private practice upfront, it’s totally possible to still get clients. I have three proven strategies to help you do just that!

In this episode, I cover:

  • Why you really need to niche down & be specific with who you’re helping
  • Creating a standout profile with Psychology Today to use as your website
  • Getting on Instagram + using it as a networking tool
  • Accepting insurance panels with Alma
  • The importance of re-investing back into your business

How to Know if Instagram is Really Worth All the Time & Effort for You19 Mar 202500:26:26

Today’s episode is inspired by a therapist in my Private Practice Academy Bundle (PPA). She posted in our VIP group, basically saying that she was in a ‘funk’ with Instagram. She wasn’t sure if all of the time and energy she was putting in was worth the little growth she was seeing.

This message really got me thinking about how valuable it is to TALK about this kind of thing.

As someone with 2 large platforms and making 7 figures/year from Instagram, I feel this PLENTY of times throughout the year!

I often wonder what the heck I’m doing. Like...am I *actually* reaching people with my content who need to see it??

In today’s episode, I’m talking about how to know if Instagram is really worth all the time & effort for you.

In this episode, I cover:

  • Reconnecting with your ‘why’ on a regular basis
  • Goals examples with Instagram + breaking down HOW to meet those
  • Why it’s helpful to focus on YOUR specific business goal & what matters most

How I Handle People Calling Me a Liar on the Internet05 Mar 202500:26:52

Something that I get asked a LOT from other therapists is how to handle negative comments online.

If you’ve been online for any time at all, you’ve probably dealt with some kind of negativity. I know it can feel like your worst nightmare when you have trolls coming for you in the comments section.

It really sucks - nobody wants OR deserves to be put on blast like that!

But...I really want to help you understand how common this is, and what to do if/when it happens to you.

In this episode, I cover:

  • Why getting negative comments online doesn’t happen as often as you think
  • One of my biggest fears about posting content online
  • My *only* two @sitwithkelly Instagram posts that received negative comments

What to Say When Other Therapists Question Your Rates19 Feb 202500:30:07

Charging a high rate as a therapist is HARD.

We experience sooo much internal guilt when we choose to do this. It’s our job to work on our money mindset, process through these emotions, and own them.

But…what happens when OTHER therapists question your rates?

They put you down for charging a premium rate, and place their limiting beliefs onto you. That shit is even HARDER!

This is something that has come up on many coaching calls within my PPA VIP community, so I knew I needed to dive into it more here.

In this episode, I cover:

  • My personal experience with others questioning my rates
  • The deep-seated belief that many of us have with charging higher rates
  • The internal ‘work’ you can do to improve your money mindset
  • How to actually respond when other therapists question your rates

Niching Down & Gaining 27k Instagram Followers with Therapist Dr. Salena Justice12 Feb 202500:34:09

Dr. Salena Justice is a psychologist based in North Carolina. She specializes in evaluating and treating adults diagnosed with autism later in life. She’s fully remote with her full-time private practice, and is licensed in over 40 states in the U.S.

While Salena is crystal clear on who she helps now, it wasn’t always that way.

Salena decided to go full-time in her private practice in January 2024. By April 2024, she had a few hundred Instagram followers and 8 insurance clients, but she REALLY wanted to fill her caseload.

Salena discovered PPA, and joined in April 2024. Since then, she’s grown her Instagram to over 27k followers!

Not only that, but she’s been able to cut WAY back on work, only seeing clients 2 or 3 days a week.

Salena has had some incredible success over the last year, and I KNOW she’s just getting started. Her story of niching down and gaining 27k Instagram followers is pretty freaking inspiring - you won’t want to miss it!!

  • Finding contentment with where you are before scaling & growing

For most of us, this list goes on and ON!

But…what if I told you there was something unexpected you could do, that would actually make it EASIER to get clients? And...you would be working LESS, not more!

Relatability, Reels, and RHONY with Liana Ross09 Apr 202500:32:47

When I think of relatability, reels, and RHONY (because she’s a huge reality TV fan), Liana is the person who comes to mind! She brings a fun, lighthearted energy to Instagram, even though she digs into pretty serious topics.

Liana Ross is an LMHC-D in New York with about a decade of experience. She is trained in EMDR and specializes in childhood/relationship trauma, addiction, disordered eating, and relationships.

Instead of sticking to boring and generic mental health quotes, Liana has gotten super specific in her messaging. She is crystal clear on her niche, and connects well with people needing support with childhood and relationship trauma.

Liana doesn’t overthink her content with Instagram. While she loves educating her community, she still incorporates HER unique personality into the mix.

Do you ever feel like Instagram is taking over your life??

You’re constantly juggling clients, content creation, family time, and everything in between.

Boundaries are super important with Instagram, but TBH - that’s something I struggled with early on. It felt exciting and lit me up, but also...really HARD.

I truly believe this is why I’ve been able to stay so consistent with not only one, but TWO accounts. I’m here to show you that it’s possible to manage your time and energy on Instagram while growing your business, too!

In this episode, I cover:

  • Common challenges therapists face with Instagram
  • Using time blocking for both work AND personal time
  • Content batching + tools that can help with this
  • Setting specific Instagram boundaries
  • Designating & prioritizing self-care and ‘downtime’ FIRST

How I Transitioned Off Insurance and Refilled My Caseload at $250/Session28 May 202500:22:00

I want to give you a behind-the-scenes look at a part of my private practice journey that doesn’t always get the spotlight. It’s not super sexy or exciting, but… it was pivotal!

When I first launched my private practice, I was living in New York City with a full-time job, bills to pay, and zero wiggle room. Insurance was my lifeline!

Getting paneled with insurance allowed me to quickly fill my caseload. I was able to replace enough income to confidently quit my nonprofit management job.

I got paneled through Alma, which operates a bit like a group practice. By early 2021, I was bringing in $6k/month from insurance clients alone!

In this episode, I cover:

  • Building a private practice caseload while paneled w/insurance + my experience with Alma
  • My transition from insurance-based clients to private pay at $250 per session

Doubling Her Income while Spending More Time with Her Kids with Play Therapist Abby Thomason21 May 202500:40:48

I’m excited to welcome Abby Thomason to the podcast today!

Abby is an early childhood play therapist and owner of her private practice, Early Emotions. She works with parents virtually and travels to schools and homes to provide play therapy to kids in the early years. She’s passionate about creating treatment that incorporates the entire family system, because we can't have strong child mental health without parent mental health.

Abby and I first connected when she joined Private Practice Academy Bundle (PPA) in April 2024, and she’s also in Reels Membership.

She stepped away from her career to be a stay-at-home mom, and fully focus on her family.

But…she felt a pull to start her Instagram page during maternity leave, and share knowledge that would support her community.

That page unexpectedly blossomed into a thriving business! Through lots of mindset work, strategy, and heart, Abby has built a private practice on HER own terms.

In today’s episode, Abby and I chat about what it was like doubling her income, while spending more time with her kids.

In this episode, we cover:

  • How Abby helps parents take more of an active role in their kids’ play therapy
  • Abby’s journey from social worker & play therapist to business owner
  • Why Abby’s private practice growth was intentionally a “slower” process
  • Shifting your focus from chasing likes & views to getting actual clients
  • What inspired Abby to join PPA in April 2024
  • Why Abby chose to offer mobile play therapy
  • Boundaries Abby has put in place with her work schedule

Should Therapists Share Political Content on Instagram (and How!)14 May 202500:24:05

Something that comes up a LOT is whether or not therapists should share political content online.

I received this question quite a bit last fall (especially during election season). Honestly, there’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’ answer.

But…I know it can really feel like a constant ‘push-pull’ for therapists!

You want to speak up and share your opinions, but you’re also unsure of how it will land with your audience.

The truth? This topic is SUPER nuanced. I knew it was time to dig into it more here!

In today’s episode, I’m diving into the topic of ‘should therapists share political content on Instagram’, and how to do so.

In this episode, I cover:

  • What to consider if you share political content online as a therapist
  • Why authenticity matters when sharing political content online
  • Examples of my own political content I’ve shared on Instagram
  • Attracting clients who align & resonate with who you are as a HUMAN

Thankfully, you don’t have to show up perfectly to market your therapy practice!

Content creation doesn’t have to be hard, even on your ‘hard’ days. You can stay visible, support your business, and most importantly, still take care of YOU.

In today’s episode, I’m diving into low-effort Instagram strategies for therapists.

For Joe, it was about sustainability, not just growth.

Joe Sanok is the author of Thursday is the New Friday: How to Work Fewer Hours, Make More Money, and Spend Time Doing What You Want. It examines how the four-day workweek boosts creativity and productivity.

In this episode, we cover:
