It’s Amanda here, and if you’ve ever hit the road with a car full of kids (or just your teacher brain trying to stay five steps ahead) you know that summer travel takes some serious strategy. In this solo episode, I’m sharing all my favorite tips for stress-free, memory-filled road trips. From how I set up my car to the genius packing system that saves me from digging through suitcases at midnight, I’ve got you covered.

I’m also diving into the nerdy (but fun!) extras that make our trips even better—like our go-to museum memberships that get us into spots across the country for free or at a discount. Plus, I’m sharing my must-have travel apps, kid entertainment hacks, snack solutions, and everything else that’s helped us stay sane on the road. If you’re road-tripping this summer, this one’s for you!

180. THE ONE PAGER QUIZ: A FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT WALKTHROUGH

Saison 6

jeudi 30 novembre 2023Durée 13:43

We understand the importance (and challenge) of finding engaging and effective ways to assess student learning. That’s why we created a F-R–E-E masterclass that walks you through three formative assessments that will change the way you teach reading.

In this episode, you’ll hear a snipper of this masterclass, which focuses on the one pager quiz. Generally in the world of ELA, one pagers are thought of as a summative assessment. But in this training, we share how to use them as formative assessments.

One pager quizzes are just one of the changes that we’ve made in our classrooms that have positively impacted the way that our students interact with the content. You can check out the full free masterclass, Down With the Reading Quiz, here!

When you sign up for the masterclass, you’ll be sent a link right away to watch the training on your own time. You’ll also receive a workbook that you can print and take notes on. Be sure to share this episode and this masterclass with your teacher friends!

178. UNIT MAKEOVER: RHETORICAL ANALYSIS

Saison 6

jeudi 16 novembre 2023Durée 36:21

We’re excited to share another installment of our unit makeover series. This time we’re delving into teaching rhetoric analysis in the classroom. We’ve noticed a pattern in the feedback we receive from you, our listeners, and we’ve decided to structure this episode as a mini-professional development session for teaching rhetoric.

You’ll hear our two main approaches to teaching rhetoric: a focus on text or a focus on skills. A text-centered approach involves using a central text and supplementing it with other texts to teach the skills of rhetorical analysis. On the other hand, a skills-centered approach involves teaching students how to deconstruct arguments and analyze rhetoric without a specific central text.

We share plenty of examples for both approaches, which we hope will give you lots of ideas to take back to your students! Is this topic something that you would like to see a live training or workshop on? Let us know by sending us a message on Instagram @bravenewteaching!

176. LESSON PLAN RESCUE: LITERARY TERMS

Saison 6

jeudi 2 novembre 2023Durée 33:39

Let’s paint a picture of a scenario that most of us have likely been in at one point or another. You have a list of literary terms that you want your students to learn. You’re teaching them over and over (and over) again.

You’ve given them the lists. You’ve played Kahoot and Jeopardy. You’ve done all the things, and yet, your students still can’t analyze literacy terms.

Sound familiar? Well, have you tried caring less and letting them cheat? We know it sounds crazy, but hear us out! It actually makes more sense than you think. In this episode, we’re here with a lesson plan rescue that will share several solutions for you to try in your classroom.
