Ep. 53 Do you need more discipline? 07 Nov 202500:27:13

Send us a text

"Just try harder." "If you wanted it badly enough, you'd do it." Why do some things stick for some people, and they haven't stuck for you?

Maybe you've gone through big stop-start cycles of crushing it at the gym, running races, joining charity walks, and then once it's done, you're back to doomscrolling. But WHY? And how can you 'be more disciplined'? Do you even need more discipline?

This episode is for you if you feel like you're a failure, not trying hard enough, and why maybe you've found consistency with eating well and exercising a challenge when you don't have an 18-year-old middle-class personal trainer with an attitude problem breathing down your neck...

Isn't body neutrality a good thing? Why am I such a hater? Well, what can I say, it comes to me naturally, but in this case, I think it's justified...

Have you ever felt like your motivation for health and fitness was hanging by a thread? I'm here with a lifeline, sharing my own battles and breakthroughs, to show you're not alone. Today's episode is a rallying cry for anyone looking to ignite a genuine spark for their wellness journey. We kick things off with a heart-to-heart about the struggles of staying driven, and then I open up about the Hunter Health Project's coaching applications. There's a lot of noise out there in the world of health advice, but I'm cutting through it with an evidence-based approach and support from industry experts.

Let's get real about the hurdles high-achieving women and marginalized communities face when it comes to motivation and discipline. I dismantle the harmful myths that suggest a lack of success is due to a lack of desire. Instead, we shine a light on internal motivation, the power of autonomy, and why personalized coaching can rewrite the narrative of health and fitness. You'll discover why fostering relatedness, competence, and autonomy isn't just jargon – it's a transformative approach to creating lasting habits that resonate with who you are and what you value.

Wrapping up the conversation, I peel back the industry curtain to share how integrating self-compassion has revolutionized my coaching practice. Plus, I offer a sneak peek into our next discussion on the symbiotic relationship between motivation and goal setting. Whether you're looking for a partner on your health journey or just curious about how to make meaningful changes on your own, this episode is packed with insights and strategies to fuel your fitness voyage. Let's embark on this path together and redefine what it means to be motivated.

I am back with part two of my series with Dr Alan Flanagan! This episode explores the themes of hyper-individualism in the health and wellness space. Are vegetarians healthier? Ep. 37 (Pt. 1) Is nutrition research f*cked? with special guest Dr. Alan Flanagan07 May 202300:54:05

Send us a text

We are flooded with outrageous-sounding information on nutrition every single day. It always seems to be people with some credentials pedalling the latest toxic and poisonous nutrients, but what are the people working in nutrition research saying? Not the chiropractors turned 'nutrition experts' and why is it that nutrition seems to be so easily misinterpreted?

Who do you believe? What do we actually need to know from nutrition research anyway?

This is part one of a two-part series with Dr Alan Flanagan who's information is listed below to get in touch.

Ep. 36 Always starting your diet again on Monday? Why we self-sabotage and how we can overcome it with special guest Ella Whitcomb-Khan30 Apr 202301:12:10

Send us a text

We all do it, don't finish the final set at the gym, tell ourselves we'll start again on Monday ,  ghost our coaches, let our goals fade into the distance when we might have had a really good chance of getting there.

Self-sabotaging or self-handicapping is really quite common. WE ALL DO IT. So why do we do it? Is this is the secret sauce to overcoming obstacles and finally reaching our goals?

This week I have a very, very special guest Ella Whitcomb-Khan chatting all things self-handicapping and how we can get out of our own way!

Ep. 35 When 'it depends' follow your ick23 Apr 202300:17:11

Send us a text

If you're trolling the internet for free but useful information in order to improve your diet or get more consistent in the gym, there are many different factors that go into advice. As a coach that tries their very best to give quality recommendations or suggestions for free, when I don't know that much about you it is really difficult and I always start everything with 'it depends' because it really does! I don't know how much you work, your preferences, your likes, and dislikes, if you have kids, how many kids, how old your kids are, etc.

In this episode I give the most basic litmus test I can come up with to figure out what it is that you need to work on if the advice given is 'it depends'

Tune in and let me know how it goes :)

Ep. 51 Do you need a coach or a therapist?23 Oct 202500:22:50

Send us a text

I'm not a therapist, I'm not pretending that I am a therapist, but is the line between coaching and therapy a little blurry? Sure, I think it certainly can be confusing, but in this episode I break down exactly why you don't have to be confused and exactly what coaching can help you with and what might be best in your therapist's office...

Ep. 33 Why stoicism and dieting don't go together, in my humble opinion09 Apr 202300:30:14

Send us a text

Is it stoicism or is she dissociating? Right after the Easter holiday, I think we can all agree that copying and pasting a math solution onto an emotional issue just won't work. It is a round peg and a square hole...

Now stoicism is often toted around as something 'motivating' to make us want to work out and eat broccoli, but does it work? Every 18-year-old personal trainer with a six-pack and a chip on their shoulder owns at least one copy of "Daily Stoic" but does it really mean that your yo-yo dieting is solved? That your stress management is good? That you'll have a good strategy for your nutrition goals?

Tune in to find out, this one is a bit of a rant.

Ep. 32 I'm not diabetic, but if carbs spike my blood sugar? Do I need a CGM? 02 Apr 202300:40:01

Send us a text

Your blood sugar will increase when you eat certain foods, carbohydrates, and protein, but how worried do we need to be about that? We all know that diabetes can wreak havoc on our health where glucose runs rampant in our bodies. But is it important to monitor how much your blood sugar spikes when you eat foods? Is that information going to help me make more personalised better nutritional choices?

Well, to be honest, I wouldn't necessarily say so, in this episode I dive into why exactly that is and the considerations to be made.

Ep. 31 Basketball, Vasectomies and diet soda, what do they have in common? 26 Mar 202300:11:19

Send us a text

What do all of these things have in common you ask? Well let me tell you, in this little soundbite of an episode I discuss the difference between causation and correlation. Lots of things are correlated but that doesn't always add up to one CAUSING the other and we can really get carried away with this in nutrition studies. Especially in click-bait headlines.

Let me know what you think!

Ep. 30 Begrudgingly taking my own advice...20 Mar 202300:09:03

Send us a text

Well, this was not the podcast that was planned! However, I took my own advice to put out something less than perfect in the name of consistency, and I tease our next episode all about continuous glucose monitors and if we all really need them, or should we hand over our money immediately. Speak to you soon you legendary not-gurus.

Ep. 29 Why am I working out all the time and not burning enough calories? with special guest Rachel Henley 13 Mar 202300:56:00

Send us a text

Pardon the sound quality at the beginning of this episode! But if you stick with it, you'll figure out all the answers as to why your gym workouts are not burning as many calories as you think! It really does seem to be a myth that persists, exercise is great for us, and exercise does indeed burn calories but unless you're doing Iron man it is unlikely they burn enough calories to change your body composition significantly. So does that mean you don't have to work out at all? Or does that mean that you can do workouts you enjoy and it's all additive to your overall wellbeing? Tune in and find out :)

EP. 28 Nutrition coaching expectation vs. reality 06 Mar 202300:21:04

Send us a text

Slapping chocolate out of your hand, following you around telling you, you're worthless and lazy, is that what you're expecting with a nutrition coach? Well, I have such BAD NEWS FOR YOU, I won't be doing that. And not because I don't call my clients out on their bs, lovingly, but shame, guilt and over-restriction don't work to move you closer to your goals. My job as a coach is to pull the best out of you, not to judge you or pretend that broccoli tastes better than cheesecake, but rather move you closer to your goals whatever they may be.

Ep. 27 How not to die (nutrionally speaking) on night shift with Michelle Carroll Msc. 27 Feb 202300:51:13

Send us a text

Working the night shift is associated with an increased risk of obesity, anxiety, depression, diabetes and other comorbidities, so what can we do to give ourselves the best chance? Michelle's advice stems from a very qualified nutrition background and her own experience working nights! Beyond marrying rich, quitting your job and screaming into your pillow there are some practical things to do in order to give yourself the best chance at feeling somewhat alive after a night shift and ensure you're taking care of your body the best you can.

Ep. 26 Is breakfast the most important meal of the day? 20 Feb 202300:22:21

Send us a text

We have all heard it, we've heard it a million times, but is it actually true? Is breakfast the most important meal of the day? Few things make me more worked up than oversimplification and prescriptive nutrition advice. So let's dig into if you can kick-start your metabolism with a bowl of cheerios.

Ep. 25 Power Pod - Is it healthier if its all-natural? 13 Feb 202300:16:17

Send us a text

Ah yes the good old-fashioned return to nature fallacy, We hear it all the time, all-natural, organic, sulphate free etc etc etc. The list goes on and on but is natural better? What about is makes it better? In this tenny tiny little power pod Coach Rach discusses.

Ep. 24 At home food intolerance tests? Toot or boot? 06 Feb 202300:28:52

Send us a text

We've all seen the ads, we've all had friends happily forking over their hard-earned money to be told that they are 'intolerant' to foods that they eat all the time. Said friend gets sad for a day, then the friend ignores advice and keeps eating the way they always have. Well here's the thing companies that market food intolerance tests market them quite heavily as cure-alls but what do they actually do? Are they accurate? Tune in to find out :)

Ep. 50 Is under-eating the cause of your overeating? 17 Oct 202500:20:54

Send us a text

Overeating is something that we all have struggled with from time to time, but the thing that might be holding you back the most from overcoming bouts of unwanted overeating might surprise you...

Ep. 23 Power Pod- Do I need powdered greens? 30 Jan 202300:11:01

Send us a text

This is a cheeky little bonus episode, some powdered food for thought if you will. Do you need powdered greens? Are you missing out on health enlightenment if you don't have them ready to go at all times, decanted in a glass container?  In my humble opinion, no, you're not. Equally, what can you do if you're struggling to get some veg in? Rach provides a few practical tips at the end of the podcast to see you all off.

Ep. 22 Feeling vegan-curious during Veganuary? 23 Jan 202300:38:50

Send us a text

This is a power-pod on how to go vegan 'well'. If you've dabbled in veganism or did Veganuary, this is the podcast to ensure that your diet supports your overall health. It is easy to go vegan these days with all the products out there void of animal products-yay, there are also so many options out there that you don't actually have to eat well and be vegan. This is your guide to going vegan but eating well, not going anaemic or losing your gains.

Send us a text

Ep. 20 New year, new me? What to focus on when ANOTHER diet feels soul destroying...09 Jan 202300:38:02

Send us a text

New year, new me comes up every year, the thing is there isn't actually anything inherently wrong with a New Years' Resolution. However, it is worth considering how you can move towards your more ideal self without grinding yourself to dust, without making it all about how much you weigh and creating yet another self-defeating prophecy for yourself. So what can you focus on if you're not putting 'lose weight' at the top of your 2023 wishlist? Well, tune in to find out what could actually help you move towards your goals. The Rachels (trade mark pending) take a few tangents to rant about what is wrong with the fitness industry. Rachel Hunter also proposes a new play called 'Book of Stoics'. Much like the Book of Mormon,  it will echo the rather misguided, religious psycho-babble of fitness bros and their beloved stoics giving Elder Cunningham a well-deserved rest.  This episode is not to be missed!

Ep. 19 How to hack your New Years Resolutions with special guest Shannon Beer02 Jan 202301:01:35

Send us a text

Your ideal self, core values and nutrition...? Oh my! What do all of these things have in common? Well, potentially your New Years' Resolution! Our special guest this week is heath and confidence coach Shannon Beer is as close to a guru as we'll likely get on a show where gurus are not allowed.

Shannon walks us through what makes goals achievable, how to be flexible, and why considering your values and ideal self could be the first step in creating a truly magical game plan for yourself.

Ep. 17 Is Macro-counting a GIGANTIC waste of your time?12 Dec 202200:44:30

Send us a text

Nothing like Rachel Hunter on a rant on a Monday morning to really get you going. Macro counting has long been bludgeoned into us as a useful way to maintain, change or improve body shape but how necessary is it actually?? There are plenty of large nutrition coaching programs that have plenty of clients who get results with these methods,  but there are plenty of people who are unable to track long enough to see good results. Why is that? Well tune in to find out :)

Ep. 16 Maintenance calories - most underutilised fat loss tool05 Dec 202200:45:21

Send us a text

It is slower but adding a week or two, or a month or two of maintenance calories into your fat loss plan can be really helpful. Just because you're not losing body fat does not mean that you are not getting a bit fitter, stronger, and overall healthier. Don't let diet culture take away relearning some key eating habits, structuring your meals well and eating foods you love. If you've struggled with taking a week off of your diet this episode is for you.

Ep. 15 Are fitness professionals happier and healthier? Special guest Michelle Carroll MSc28 Nov 202200:43:04

Send us a text

This week on Not Nutrition Gurus, we have our very first guest Michelle Carroll! Michelle has a master's in Sports and Exercise Nutrition which coupled with her unparalleled sense of humour makes her the ultimate first guest on the pod.   During her master, she delved into research about the pertinence of body image and disordered eating in fitness professionals. It is so easy to assume in the fitness industry that the grass is always greener on the other side. Which in this case is "if they're a PT and have abs they MUST be healthy and have good body image". Well, listen in to find out if this is actually true.

Ep. 49 What I got (really) wrong about a positive body image... 09 Oct 202500:23:39

Ep. 13 How to steer into the skid post holiday season tips pt. 214 Nov 202200:52:54

Send us a text

Bloated, sad, no money, holidays are over, it's dark at 4 pm and now you look at the scale and have gained 10lbs in two weeks and you start to plan your next move so that you can be 'shredded for summer'. Does this all sound familiar? The cycle of doom with the holidays, possibly your holiday plans didn't go to plan exactly. Well, how do you come out of the other side of the holiday fog with all of your sanity and continue to make progress? This is the podcast for you, we run through practical tips like what to do with all of that candy and leftovers, as well as a cheeky toot and boot of terrible holiday advice kicking around.

Ep. 12 How your progress survives the holiday season pt. 107 Nov 202200:48:14

Send us a text

Listen, we all love the holidays no matter what you may or may not celebrate the last two months of the calendar year typically do increase in family gatherings, social occasions, tasty foods, booze, deep regret about bringing up politics in front of Aunt Margeret even though you knew how it was going to end. But can you maintain your progress or even keep making progress when the last 8 weeks of the year are always a titillating mix of champagne truffles, office party faux pas and mashed potato volcanoes? We think that it can, yes. It may require some planning, maintaining your sensibilities and getting those reps in on acceptance and self-compassion. This is part one of our holiday season series, we do hope that you very much enjoy!

Ep. 10 What to eat to get jacked pt. 2 of muscle gain23 Oct 202201:18:11

Send us a text

This is a very juicy episode where Rach and Rachel go through literally everything you could possibly want to coach yourself through a muscle gain phase. There is so much bro-science out there about muscle gain that we wanted to put together an episode to cut through the noise, give you some real-life practical advice, reassure you on the things you are unsure if they are hearsay or relevant like leucine content, high-quality protein etc.

Lifting, getting strong and having lots of lean muscle mass is great for a long healthy life and not just for getting ridiculously jacked. PS LADIES GLUTES ARE A MUSCLE, so if you're after a juicy hiney, take a listen to this one.

Ep. 9 So you want to get jacked? pt.1 of muscle gain16 Oct 202200:52:36

Send us a text

What do I actually need to do to get muscular anyway?? If you're toning up for cuffing season hunnies and Rachel and Rachel have the answers to your questions. What is the best program to gain muscle? How do I find it? Do I need to track my workouts? If hitting Legs Bums and Tums every week religiously isn't giving you the Megan Thee Stallion Body-ody-ody you want, you need to listen to this episode.

Ep. 8 How can I accurately measure progress?09 Oct 202200:49:54

Send us a text

Rach and Rachel chat about how to accurately measure your progress when it comes to fat loss, they take a slight detour into body image and genetics and land the plane back with measuring progress in muscle gain. We concluded that no one on earth needs to know their body fat percentage, gym scales are rubbish and comparison is the thief of progress.
