| What Scares a Cosmetic Chemist? - EP 57 | 28 oct. 2026 | 00:45:55 | |
This week we are feeling extra spooky, because it’s nearly Halloween! So we wanted to give you a sneaky little peak into the scariest things we have heard as cosmetic chemists, and we promise its more than just unpreserved cosmetics (Of course its still a little bit of that, because they are really scary). Sadie and Nat are sharing some of the times that things didn’t go as planned while working in the lab. Maybe they were honest mistakes, but we can’t prove that these events weren’t supernatural. We discuss spilling banned ingredients, broken glass, and Natalie gives her professional opinion on why mascara is so bad. We talked about frightening client interactions and finished good failures to show you the (not so scary) details that need to be considered when making cosmetics. We also share the one and only time either of us ever tried working with soap noodles, and spoiler it led to an evacuation. We discuss why even if something is ‘safe’ it's probably best to still take precaution when handling it. We discuss how development labs are different than manufacturing labs, and the precautions that are needed to keep chemists and consumers happy and healthy. And while we can’t prove that there are ghosts haunting the air of the laboratory, we can confirm that there are potential irritants like silica and capsaicin powder floating around. We are also sharing some anonymous stories from fellow cosmetic chemists and talking about color changes, form changes, and failed stability testing. Join us for a silly episode, and learn what we find frightening! | Giving Fungus a HOT New Makeover! - EP 56 | 21 oct. 2026 | 00:49:35
Fungi are everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE. And they tend to be pretty misunderstood. Yeast, mold, and mushrooms are not plants, not bacteria, and not just spooky Halloween germs. They are a completely different branch of life, and they play a much bigger role in your environment, your skin, and your cosmetics than you probably realize. This week we break down what it means to be a fungus in a way that finally makes sense, from the cell-wall secret ingredient that separates them from bacteria and plants to the digestive reason they can be both helpful and harmful. This episode also gets into one of the strangest and most useful parts of fungi - their byproducts. From ancient moldy-bread medicine to modern ingredients like citric acid, azelaic acid, beta carotene, and fermented squalane, fungi show up everywhere once you know what to look for. If you care about skincare, cosmetic preservation, microbiomes, or just want to stop side-eyeing mushrooms every time they pop up on your feed, or in your lawn, this one is for you. Perfect for anyone with a little mycophobia, a lot of curiosity, or a growing obsession with the science behind beauty products. By the end, fungi may still seem weird - but they’ll make a whole lot more sense. We are chatting about: Why fungi are similar to humans What chitin is and why it matters in fungal cell walls The difference between yeasts, molds, and mushrooms How fungi help decompose matter and recycle nutrients Why your skin microbiome includes both bacteria and fungi The real risks behind fungal infections like athlete’s foot, ringworm, and fungal acne How cosmetics get contaminated, and how GMP and preservatives help prevent it Which fungal-derived ingredients show up in skincare, including snow mushroom, reishi, shiitake, chaga, cordyceps, and more Welcome to Beauty by the Beaker, the podcast where Sciences Gets a Hot New Makeover! | $400 Serum? Zombie Cell Skincare Is The Spooky New Trend - EP55 | 14 oct. 2026 | 00:46:24
Have you heard of Zombie Cells? Senescent cells are real, but the skincare claims built around them are often way more terrifying than the science supports. This week in the Science Salon, Sadie and Nat unpack the spooky truth behind these dormant skin cells. The scariest thing might be all the new vocab words. This week we discuss telomeres and apoptosis and explain how UV damage and stress fit into the story. You’ll hear how certain ingredients are being sold as senolytics, and why the jump from petri dish results to real-world skin benefits is a much bigger leap than brands want you to think. This week we help you understand why these “zombie cells” are suddenly everywhere in anti-aging marketing. We also dig into the products making the loudest promises like Peach and Lily’s Zombie Cream featuring DSM’s Eterwell™ Youth. We dive into the studies, including the in vitro, ex vivo, and human data behind the ingredient claims. We press on the details that matter most: sample size, placebo controls, concentration, and whether the marketing is really about science or just smart wording. The conversation also gets into why hydration ingredients like glycerin may be doing more of the visible heavy lifting than the “zombie cell” story. We are chatting about: Why senescent cells are called zombie cells How telomeres and cellular damage push skin cells toward senescence or apoptosis What DSM claims about targeted apoptosis and collagen support Where the evidence is strong, where it gets fuzzy, and where brand marketing starts to overreach Why a $435 serum with a confusing ingredient deck is not automatically worth your money Welcome to Beauty by the Beaker, the podcast where Sciences Gets a Hot New Makeover! | Beauty Lies Have SCARY Consequences - EP54 | 07 oct. 2026 | 00:44:18
We are kicking off Spooky Season the scariest way we know how! Beauty misinformation is more than annoying, it shapes what people buy, believe, and do with their skin. In this episode, Sadie and Nat break down some of the most persistent beauty myths, from chemical sunscreen fears and “reef-safe” claims to oral sunscreen supplements, preservative misinformation, and the ways AI and sensational headlines can distort scientific evidence. The hosts recap the Truth and Beauty eSummit from The Eco Well, exploring how emotional marketing, cherry-picked studies, and the attention economy help beauty misinformation spread. They discuss why chemical sunscreens are often unfairly villainized, why sunscreen supplements probably aren’t the safer shortcut they sound like, and why “reef-safe” is more of an unregulated marketing claim and less of a scientific guarantee. From sunscreen myths to fear-based beauty marketing, this conversation looks at the real-world consequences of misinformation and offers a more thoughtful way to evaluate skincare claims. If you’re interested in skincare, cosmetic chemistry, sunscreen, or making sense of beauty science, this episode is for you.Grab a seat, we are chatting about: The Importance of Science CommunicationThe financial problem behind beauty researchWhy the term “chemical sunscreen” can sound scarier than the evidence suggestsWhat to consider when evaluating sunscreen claimsWhy sunscreen and coral reef headlines can leave out important contextHow AI search results can amplify low-quality or misleading scienceWhy preservatives matter for cosmetic safetyHow science, art, and aspiration shape the beauty marketQuestions to ask when deciding who to trust, and what they might gain from your beliefThe importance of source vettingWelcome to Beauty by the Beaker, the podcast where Sciences Gets a Hot New Makeover! | Itchy, Flaky, and Irritated Scalp? Don't Make It Worse - EP53 | 30 sept. 2026 | 00:28:22
This week is all about scalp health. Your itchy, flaky scalp might not be dandruff, and using the wrong treatment could make it worse. In this episode of Beauty by the Beaker, cosmetic chemists Sadie and Natalie explain the difference between dry scalp, dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and psoriasis, plus how to choose a smarter next step. Learn how scalp oil, aka sebum, and the yeast Malassezia are connected to dandruff and why itching can start before flakes appear. Not all scalp issues are microbial, and this week we discuss how clues like flake texture, redness, your environment, and hair-washing habits may help you understand what’s going on. What makes this distinction important? We explain why dry scalp and dandruff typically call for opposite approaches. This episode covers the scalp microbiome (and its limited research), over-the-counter dandruff shampoo ingredients, and how treatments such as pyrithione zinc, salicylic acid, selenium sulfide, sulfur, and ketoconazole work. Find out why some ingredients target fungal overgrowth while others help loosen and break up flakes. Learn how to properly use these products, and why letting dandruff shampoo sit on your scalp for a few minutes can matter. If you’re wondering whether to use a gentle hydrating shampoo, an anti-dandruff treatment, or scalp oil, this practical scalp-care guide can help you avoid common mistakes. Understand when cautious trial and error may be reasonable and when it’s best to see a dermatologist. Remember if your scalp is painful, very inflamed, or symptoms are spreading, it’s best to skip the headache and see a professional for a diagnosis. | How Important is pH in Cosmetics? A Simple Explanation of Hydrogens Power - EP 52 | 23 sept. 2026 | 00:50:04
Every once in a while we see pH marketed on labels, but most people have no idea what it actually means - and that confusion is exactly why it has the opportunity to become such a powerful buzzword. If you’ve ever wondered whether “pH balanced” skincare or hair care is worth paying more for, this episode breaks down the science in a way that finally makes sense. This week we are discussing the power of Hydrogen, and we are doing it in some very conceptual and possibly less than scientific ways. We explain what the pH is, what the scale is based on, and how a tiny shift can represent a 10x change in hydrogen ion concentration. That definitely matters as a chemist when we are formulating products that touch your skin, hair, or scalp, but does it matter as a consumer? This week you'll discover: Why pH is logarithmic, and why that makes a difference between pH of 5 and 7 much more significant than it sounds Where common substances like lemon juice, vinegar, shampoo, skin, soap, and oven cleaner fall on the scale Why the acid mantle matters for skin health, dryness, and barrier function When pH really does matter in cleansing, and when it’s mostly a marketing distraction How acids, surfactants, and product formulas actually behave in water and on skin Why certain shampoo studies and “low pH” marketing can be misleading, and why formulators already account for these details so consumers usually don’t have to. The different role of pH in cleansers versus acids like AHAs, BHAs, and functional other skincare ingredients. If you are curious about how the pH scale works, and why it's important in skincare but don’t have a background in chemistry, this episode is for you. | 3 Misconceptions You Still Have About Curly Hair - EP 51 | 16 sept. 2026 | 00:31:44
When it comes to curls there is a lot of misinformation, and this week we are setting the record straight. Natalie and Sadie, cosmetic formulation chemists are covering the 3 main misconceptions when it comes to curly hair, and explaining why you might not be treating your hair right. We break down why curl type is a weak predictor of what your hair actually needs, why “wash less” is not universal, and why products do not magically change your curl pattern. Starting with the origins of curl typing, including its uncomfortable ties to racial classification and the later Andre Walker system that still dominates online charts today. We show why two people with the same curl label can need completely different routines depending on porosity, elasticity, thickness, product load, and how much manipulation their hair gets. This week we learn: Why curl typing can be useful for estimating shrinkage and gel-cast behavior, but not for choosing products Why scalp oil, sweat, climate, and product buildup matter more than curl pattern when deciding wash frequency How hydrogen bonds and disulfide bonds actually shape what your hair does—and what heat, bleaching, and chemical services can permanently change Why wet styling, gentle handling, and the right level of hold can enhance your natural pattern without “creating” new curls We also get into the wavy-versus-curly debate, the fear around brushing dry hair, and the beauty-industry habit of turning pseudoscience into product advice. If you’ve ever been told your hair routine “has” to be done a certain way because of your curl type, this episode gives you permission to stop following rules that do not fit your hair. | Controversial Beauty Rumors Usually Need More Context - EP50 | 09 sept. 2026 | 00:28:31
It’s the first official episode of season 2, and we are going to be trying something a little bit different. Mostly because we want to talk about beauty science you are actually interested in, but also because our lives have been a bit crazy, and we needed another week of chatting to give us more time for research. Since we want to give you the most accurate and easy to understand information we possibly can, we typically have to spend a LOT of time researching for each episode, but we only want to do that for topics you have questions about! This week we are telling you the topics we think are HOT in the beauty industry, and giving you a little insider information on why we think they are worth diving into. If any of today's topics interest you, make sure to comment so we know where to start! We are cosmetic formulation chemists, and today in the science salon we are covering makeup myths, over(or under)hyped ingredients, laser and light treatments, and so much more! Red Light Therapy: It might sound like bologna, but this might actually work! Of course, not all red lights are created equal. As it turns out the wavelength, dosage, and treatment practices can all play a role in the type of benefits you might get from this therapy. Peptides: What are these, and what are they doing? Well, that's not such an easy question to answer. What’s actually coming in that unlabeled bottle you bought online? Niacinamide: This ingredient may be too common to care about. This vitamin is found in many cosmetics, but is it actually doing anything? Experts are ditching it, and we want to know why. Hyaluronic Acid: Or is it Sodium Hyaluronate? What used to be the gold standard for skin hydration has taken somewhat of a fall from grace. So is there a more reliable alternative? Pet Cosmetics: Pet grooming aids like shampoo are not regulated by the FDA, so how do you know what's safe to use on our pets? Find out what the people who formulate these products think about the difference in regulation, and similarity to human products. ‘Toxic’ Ingredients: It's no secret that the EU has banned more cosmetic ingredients than we have in the USA, but is there actually a difference in what is being used in products? We want to dive into the common misconception that your products contain harmful ingredients. Benzene: Did someone say harmful ingredients? This is a known human carcinogen, but the problem probably isn’t cosmetics. We want to dive into why this keeps making its way into the spotlight, and what risk it actually poses. In Office Treatments: Are these worth the money? And what can these do that topical cosmetics can’t? We have talked about light, so what about lasers? Should we swap notes with a dermatologist? Specialized Cosmetics: Are these brands filling a hole in the market, or are they just finding creative new ways to take your money. Sometimes products that you don’t understand are not made for you, but other times there are much cheaper and well studied alternatives for treating actual medical issues. We are giving you a sneak peak at one cosmetic that we find extra audacious. Welcome to Beauty by the Beaker, the podcast where Sciences Gets a Hot New Makeover! | The Unexpected World of Beauty Science Podcasting - EP 49 | 02 sept. 2026 | 00:31:27
Happy Birthday BXB!!! This week we are celebrating 1 year of the podcast by reflecting on some of the epic highs and lows of the past, and setting some new expectations for the future. We discuss the unexpected struggles of co-hosting a beauty science podcast, and the desire to stop the spread of misinformation while still appealing to a large audience… which we unfortunately haven’t done yet after a year… but we aren’t ready to stop trying! And although small, we talk about how positive the feedback on the show has been, especially from the people we were most afraid of judgement from. This episode is extra sappy as we reflect on some amazing industry connections we have made, the milestones we have crossed. We are diving into one of our most asked questions - how do we have a high quality production without making any money? And Natalie is making a (not so) strict rule on who is NOT invited to the salon. Stick around for a new exciting update you’re not going to want to miss! Remember, we are talking about PERSONAL care, so even though we like these products, they might not be the best options for you. | Fear Is Keeping You From Perfect Hair! - EP46 | 12 août 2026 | 00:46:55
Are you ready for perfect hair? Good, because this episode is your scientifically proven guide to perfect hair! .. well… sort of. As it turns out, hair isn’t super vital, and for that reason, there hasn’t been a very strong push for rigorous scientific evaluation. But today we have the closest thing we are going to get to a hair expert, Sadie! Sadie performs microscopic hair analysis, and writes up a customized report, detailing everything you could need to know about your hair. | Exosomes Work! What About In Skincare? The Truth Behind 'Regenerative' Cosmetics - EP44 | 29 juil. 2026 | 00:41:08
Exosomes are rapidly becoming the hottest buzzword in skincare, but what do we really know about their power? Are they the regenerative breakthrough they're made out to be, or simply a clever marketing tactic? If you're curious about whether products claiming to harness these tiny cellular messengers are worth your hard-earned money, this episode is for you! As cosmetic chemists, we cut through the hype to explain what exosomes are, and more importantly, what they aren’t. We are breaking down the science behind these cell signaling vesicles, why their source (human, plant, bacteria, or fungus) matters immensely, and what current research really says about their ability to improve skin. We dive into the biggest misconceptions, including the limitations of topical delivery, the regulation hurdles, and why the price tags often don’t match the proven benefits. We explain the different sources of exosomes, and explore the promising data behind human-derived strains from blood and stem cells, but of course we also highlight just how early-stage and inconclusive most studies remain. We cover some questionable delivery methods like microneedling, patches, and other in-office procedures that might enhance absorption, and why many topical products may never penetrate a healthy skin barrier effectively. Without proper regulation and solid science, many products may be more about impression than efficacy. And we obviously need to cover the regulations, so we highlight how unsubstantiated claims cross into unapproved drug territory, putting consumers at risk. Understanding these nuances helps you make smarter choices, avoid wasted money, and set realistic expectations for skin ‘rejuvenation.’ Welcome to Beauty by the Beaker, the podcast where Sciences Gets a Hot New Makeover! | Is Looksmaxxing The Answer To A Bigger Problem? - EP 38 | 11 juin 2026 | 00:31:34
0:00 - Introduction to Looksmaxxing Discussion on the concept and its societal implications. 15:18 - A Never Ending Pursuit For Perfection How looksmaxxing has roots in historical beauty practices. 19:06 - Modern Trends and Influences The role of social media and influencers in popularizing looksmaxxing. 21:35 - Gender Perspectives Differences in beauty standards and expectations for men and women. 25:14 - Psychological and Social Impacts How looksmaxxing affects self-esteem and social interactions. 28:31 - Ethical Considerations The dangers and ethical concerns surrounding extreme beauty practices. 29:37 - Conclusion and Personal Reflections Final thoughts on the future of beauty standards and personal empowerment. This week we are diving into a HOT topic - Looksmaxxing. Most of society can agree that appearance ISN’T everything, but why haven’t we ever been able to move past the importance of our looks? and why are straight men suddenly going to such dangerous lengths to maxximize their appearance? In this provocative episode, we unravel the (not so) surprising parallels between gendered beauty practices and the extreme phenomenon of looksmaxxing among men, from steroid injections to bone smashing. Is this just a new twist on a tale as old as time? Join us in the Science Salon, and discover how the desire for societal acceptance fuels this dangerous trend and why mainstream media, social media, and even medical professionals play a role in pushing these extreme practices. We break down the origins of looks maxxing, revealing how a 2010s niche internet phenomenon has become a mainstream obsession. We explore the impact of black pill ideology, where appearance is seen as the only way to social mobility, and why society's system of beauty standards needs urgent reevaluation. We analyze real examples like Braden Peters, better known as "Clavicular", the TikTok star injecting steroids and smashing his jaw, and examine how younger generations are risking their health in pursuit of perfection. We are talking about the dangerous extremes like plastic surgery, illegal drugs, and body modifications that are widely normalized in the beauty industry, even if they are inherently reckless. Beyond the shock factor, this episode challenges you to think about the systemic pressures behind looksmaxxing. Is this merely individual vanity, or are we all complicit in a system that prizes superficial beauty over genuine confidence? We consider how media, societal expectations, and gender stereotypes shape this obsession, and what we can do to foster self-love and confidence outside of appearance. At the end of the day, the non stop pursuit of perfection is in vain. Remember to love each other, and look for ways to help people out. BXB welcomes all, no matter their physical appearance.

| Avoid This Cosmetic Ingredient If You Are Going to the Airport - EP 34 | 13 mai 2026 | 00:25:43 | |
Are you brushing your teeth with explosives? No, not really, but your cosmetics could still set off alarms going through TSA, and not just because they are bigger than 3.4oz. In this episode we are diving into a cosmetic ingredient that might help with tooth sensitivity, but it might also get you stuck at the airport security checkpoint having your luggage swabbed. Potassium Nitrate, KNO3. In this episode we are diving into some of the primary uses of Potassium Nitrate. We are covering fertilizers, fireworks and filet mignon (meat preservation), and how the oxygen present in nitrates makes it helpful for many everyday uses. Then we are talking about its use in cosmetics. If you have ever used a toothpaste designed to reduce sensitivity, then you have used this ingredient. We are covering how sensitivity relief toothpaste works, and the studies that have proven it to be effective (and of course, poking some holes in them). It's always important to remember that the same ingredient can be used in multiple applications, and will perform differently in each of them. If there is an ingredient in common with fertilizer and your toothpaste, that does NOT mean you have fertilizer in your toothpaste. The concentration and the other ingredients in the formula are always going to be more important than any one ingredient (Unless you are have an allergy) Welcome to Beauty by the Beaker, the podcast where Sciences Gets a Hot New Makeover! Most skincare claims are based on estimates and outdated science, In this eye-opening episode, cosmetic chemists Sadie and Natalie reveal the hidden flaws in skincare labeling, and why "non-comedogenic" means little without proper evidence, and how marketing exploits consumer fears. In this episode we are talking all about what it actually takes to be permitted to legally use the words non comedogenic on your product, shockingly its not much. We are also talking about some different ways that you can find products that work well with your skin and don't break you out. In this Episode we cover: Why the term "non-comedogenic" is virtually unregulated and how companies often label products without rigorous testing The differences between non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic, and their relevance for acne-prone skin How current testing methods like rabbit ear studies and acne checkers often give misleading results The truth about FDA regulations, recent legislation like MoCRA, and why most cosmetic claims are just marketing Practical advice on patch testing, ingredient concentrations, and how to avoid pore-clogging ingredients without falling for buzzwords Empower you to ask better questions and make smarter choices. Perfect for skincare enthusiasts, dermatology skeptics, and anyone navigating the confusing world of beauty marketing, this deep dive will have you questioning labels and understanding what truly matters when it comes to healthy skin. | Non-Comedogenic? A 50 Year Old Rabbit Study is Influencing Your Skincare Choices - EP 32 | 29 avr. 2026 | 00:37:55
Most people believe certain ingredients or products cause acne, but the truth is far more complex, and surprisingly outdated. This week we are diving into the real science behind the popular non-comedogenic claim that’s been shaping skincare for over 50 years. This episode unpacks the origins of the Rabbit Ear Study, revealing why its findings are not super reliable. If you’ve ever read a label claiming “non-comedogenic” and wondered what it really means, this is your essential guide to understanding the truth about acne-causing ingredients, and spoiler: it's not what you think. Sadie and Natalie, cosmetic chemists with over a decade of experience, break down the belief that certain ingredients block pores and cause breakouts. This idea was born in the 70s using animal testing. You’ll discover how early studies overstated the impact of individual ingredients, and why the finished product’s formulation, ingredient purity, and application hygiene matter far more than isolated components. We explore how modern science challenges the simplistic idea of “bad” ingredients, emphasizing that the overall formula matters, and not just one ingredient on a list. Key Topics:

We are two cosmetic chemists, and in this mini episode we are chatting all about one particular TikTok it-girl, and her highly anticipated new skincare line. Of course we are going to be addressing all the controversy. There is at least one thing that Sadie, Natalie, and Alix all have in common, and thats a history with Isotretinoin (Accutaine), and we are diving into the ethics of creating and marketing cosmetics aimed at acne prone skin while not being transparent about your how you achieved your own results. But beyond perfect skin, we are talking about how brands use selective marketing terms to avoid conflict with the FDA. We are 'clearing up' some of the clever ways that heavy marketing implications keep brands "Free-from"OTC claims. Like what does Breaking Out Free actually mean? And while we dont think an 8% Mandelic Acid serum is the silver bullet to clearing cystic acne, we discuss the tricky situation that brands are put into when it comes to balancing innovation and medical claims. And while the packaging is super cute, you can't trick us into paying $36 for 2oz of product. Do we think this is just a cash grab? This week we are jumping into a highly requested topic - synthetic food dyes. But in order to really answer the question - Do we need to fear Red 40 - we first need to go over some of the history of Dyes. It turns out humans love colors, and we have for as long as we have been around. We talk about the first synthetic dye, mauvine, which was made on accident when an 18 year old chemist was trying to make medicine out of coal tar. We also talk about the first synthetic pigment, which was a much earlier - Egyptian Blue. We are discussing the history of synthetic dyes in food. | What Happened To Burt's Bees? The Accidental Success Story - Mini Episode | 18 mars 2026 | 00:23:23
Is the guy in the logo real? In our first solo mini episode, we are going to deep dive into the story behind the brand, Burt's Bees. Burt Shavitz wasn't looking for fame, so how did he go from a self described loner to arguably the most famous bee keeper in the world? It started when a 60s hippie left his life as a street photographer for Time-Life in Manhattan. Burt describes getting his hives as divine intervention, and started selling honey from his truck. In another turn of fate, he met a woman who would take his sweet and small operation to a 900 million dollar personal care company, Roxanne Quimby. Although today cosmetics are the brands sole focus, that certainly wasn't where this started. So what is the real story? Was it a love affair, a dynamic duo, or complete exploitation? We do our best to uncover it. In this episode we are talking about the burts, so we needed to cover the bees. What makes the honey bee so important? We are talking about different types of bees, and how honey and beeswax are made. Is honey just bee vomit? And did this insect invent the worlds first plastic? | EP 27 - The 7 Sins of Greenwashing! How To Be A Conscious Personal Care Consumer | 11 mars 2026 | 00:52:25
This week we are putting an end to greenwashing in cosmetics! (If only it was that easy) Welcome to Beauty by the Beaker, the podcast where Sciences Gets a Hot New Makeover! We're two cosmetic chemists who want to reveal what really goes into your favorite products, and we aren't afraid to bust some myths while doing it. Whether you’re a skincare enthusiast, a curious consumer, or just tired of being told coconut oil cures everything, you’re in the right place. Let's gossip about all things beauty together! Pull up a chair, your appointment's about to start CHAPTERS 00:00: Catching up about being the luckiest girls in the world 05.59: Greenwashing! What is it? Who is doing it? Who does it affect? Breaking down some of the sneaky marketing tricks that companies use to make their cosmetic products seem better for the environment than they actually are. We are going over the 7 sins. 09:40: Sin 1, the Sin of The Hidden Trade Off. The company might be making small efforts that appear to be sustainable - is this a positive solution, or a distraction to a larger problem? 13:59: Sin 2, the Sin of No Proof. Companies who make claims about their sustainability efforts, but don’t have the receipts. Discussing future washing, and one very big example of greenwashing: reef safe sunscreen. We hate to break it to you, but switching to mineral sunscreen isn’t going to save our coral. 19:32: Sin 3, the Sin of Vagueness. You have probably heard of ‘clean beauty’ but what does clean even mean? Turns out, companies have found a lot of wording loopholes to market their products, and if you can’t define something you can’t deny it either. This strategy relies on consumer confusion, and allows companies to benefit from association without actually doing anything. Boo 24:04: Sin 4, the Sin of Irrelevance. This is kind of like companies giving themselves participation awards and we see it all the time. Paraben Free? Good for you! So is everyone else (mostly, and unfortunately)! So this is when a brand will say things just to say them, does it have anything to do with their product? No. 27:31: Sin 5, the Sin of the Lesser of Two Evils. Some things are just inherently bad. Luckily you guys are smart, so this strategy isn’t very successful. 29:24: Sin 6, the Sin of Fibbing. This one is illegal. So it's also not common, especially in the states, because we like to sue. 30:27: Bonus Sin 7, the Sin of Worshiping False Labels. Everything looks great from the packaging, but that's as deep as it gets. 32:17: Brownwashing, or Greenhushing. These strategies aren’t new, and consumers are already recognizing them. If they spot ‘greenwashing’ this can cause distrust in the brand. Have you ever questioned the motives behind a ‘kind’ act? This added layer of confusion doesn’t make finding environmentally conscious brands any easier. 39:32 Combating Greenwashing: We talk about how consumers can challenge greenwashing, and have a positive impact on the earth. Micro vs macro impact, which is really important to recognize if we ever want to make a difference. Buying new things is a net negative, so the best we can do is learn to be conscious consumers! Everyone has a small improvement they can make, and a small effort from a large group of people will go a long way. | EP 26 - Is Gold The Secret To Anti-Aging? Humans Love It, Science Explains Why. | 04 mars 2026 | 00:40:10
Welcome back to another Wednesday! This week we are giggling about gold. This beautiful metal has been popular throughout all of history, but why is that? In this episode we are explaining the science behind this unique material. Its variety of uses range from traditional medicine to jewelry, but does it have potential to be a skincare miracle worker? We are discussing nanoparticles, and how gold can be complexed with beneficial active ingredients - but not all that glitters is gold. Pull up a chair and laugh along with us. SHOW NOTES 03:15: Catch up: Talking about birthdays, Valentines Day, Wuthering Heights. We get a little personal about holiday expectations, and decide once again that our differences make us great! 08:02: Important Podcast News updates! This show is still self funded, you can contribute by liking, subscribing, commenting, and if you are feeling extra generous, sharing the episode. 10:45: The history of gold, how it's been used in cosmetics, and whether or not it is the anti-aging miracle some people claim it to be. We give a big disclaimer for this episode, which is that it's going to be a fun one, so maybe don’t take it too seriously. 12:14: Gold in Ancient Egypt. HThis segment is a bit hard to follow, so we we hope you are also the luckiest girl (or anyone) in the world, you’ll need it. 17:10: Gold in Medicine: Traditional holistic medicine, originating in India and Nepal, Ayurveda, uses a gold preparation called Swarna Bhasma. This is intended to be ingested, which despite some marketing claims, is different than putting it on your skin. 18:55: What are Nanoparticles? We are talking about some scientific advancements, and a couple not-so-scientific ones too. When it comes to active ingredients, size matters, particle size that is. And the smaller the thing, the more likely it is to pass through you, and like with all science, it's not all good or bad. 20:45: Why do humans love gold? We are discussing this element's unique properties, and how those make it such a great material for jewelry, but also safe to eat. 24:40 Surface Plasmon Resonance, and why it makes very small particles of gold appear red or purple. We got off topic pretty quickly though. 27:07 Properties of Gold nanoparticles make them interesting for Biomedical Research, but are they useful in skincare? High-end Gold-infused skincare. 28:21: Is Using Gold Skincare Safe? Why it's hard to study the efficacy of gold nanoparticles. 30:08: Revealing the secret to anti-aging. **disclaimer - lots of joking in this section. 31:39: Humans love Gold. That's why we typically give gold to the ones we love - in the form of a wedding ring! All jokes aside: 14k is the ‘gold standard’ when it comes to jewelry. 32:43: It's getting late, and things are starting to get extra silly. 34:25: Gold symbolizes exclusivity. Weird, humans have always been super logical when it comes to luxury. We conclude that gold is super fun to look at, but when it comes to fixing your skin issues, your money might be better used on a more scientifically backed ingredient. 36:43: Teasing this month's episodes, and a gold product we are both loving.

| EP 24 - Some Animals Use Pheromones to Find a Lover. Do Humans? | 18 févr. 2026 | 00:55:48 | |
This week we are back in the Salon to talk about a special type of chemical that MIGHT help you find your Valentine, Pheromones! Which as you may have guessed, are linked to some debatable science. We are discussing some well known examples of animals who use pheromones, and then talking about why humans probably don't. Even if we don’t use our noses to find love, we are talking all about how our sense of smell influences our decision making. Welcome to Beauty by the Beaker, the podcast where Sciences Gets a Hot New Makeover! Pull up a chair, your appointment's about to start. Pheromones are very well studied in the Silkworm, which does in fact grow up to become a silk moth. https://www.si.edu/spotlight/buginfo/pheromones#:~:text=silkworm%20family%20moths%2C%20where%20males%20are%20noted,following%20a%20pheromone%20trail%20in%20the%20air. We talk about how humans actually do use Pheromones, just not with their Jacobsons Organ. We use them to protect crops from pests. Research on pheromones started in the 1950s, and they were originally used by farmers to lure in insects and trap them. In the 1970s, they started using them as a way to prevent mating success, which decreased the population. https://agresearchmag.ars.usda.gov/ar/archive/1997/jan/science.pdf

| EP 20 - Are Sulfates Natural? Washing Away Myths About Cleansers | 21 janv. 2026 | 00:54:08 | |
Forget everything you thought you knew about surfactants, this week we are talking about the most common cleansing myths. We answer - if my cleanser is burning, does that mean it's working? Does your shampoo open and close your hair cuticle? Do rinse off products even matter? Spoiler, they do. They are actually designed to be rinsed off, and we are talking about why. We are talking about the science behind double shampooing, and why you get so much foam the second time. We’re ending the episode with a conversation about Natural vs Synthetic, and how natural doesn’t always mean better, or anything at all. Most importantly, we are reminding you of the complexities of surfactant systems, and why you can’t really judge a cleanser based on its ingredient list. | EP 19 - Face Wash, Micellar Water, and Makeup Wipes - Are They Really That Different? | 14 janv. 2026 | 00:41:24

We are talking about color safe shampoo, and how sulfates got such a bad reputation. Then we are talking about a familiar grapefruit acne facewash, and different types of makeup removing methods. This one is all over the place, so try to follow along! Additional notes from todays episode: We mention Anionic Surfactants are petroleum derived (crude oil), but they can also be coconut/palm derived. This is a whole different ethics question. The Microbead-free waters act of 2015 - prohibited the use of plastic microbeads in the use of rinse off products. The deadline for the change was 2017.
