| 212. The Mental Health Crisis in Education: Featuring Jeff Kubiak | 08 Oct 2022 | 00:24:27 | |
What do we do when we are at our breaking point and feel completely overwhelmed? For many, unfortunately, masking and ignoring the problems become the unhealthy solution. This week’s guest, Jeff Kubiak, is incredibly transparent and brave as he shares his battle with alcoholism, his focus on mental health, and how he is transforming his campus to focus on the social and emotional needs of his students and staff.
In this episode, we discuss:
About Jeff Kubiak: I, Jeff Kubiak, grew up in Davis, CA with one sister, and an amazing mother and father. My mom was a public school teacher for 33 years, and my dad worked for UC Davis for 35 years. I have a phenomenal wife, Piper and two kids, Keeley, and Braden. My pops passed away in 2019 from Alzheimers. I am currently an educator, author and speaker in Northern California. Having taught for ten years as an elementary school teacher in grades 4, 5, and 6, and am now serving my 10th year as an administrator as an Elementary School VP, in Elk Grove. I’ve always looked at education from a different lens: from someone who hated school and struggled with the typical educational model. I vow to always do my best to help increase opportunities for all students to feel heard, noticed, celebrated, challenged and be safe. Serving the whole child is one of my most valued passions, as we often miss out on an important piece of a child’s puzzle. I work hard to push back against the old model of “Industrialized Education” and fight compliance. Not a day goes by that he is not looking ahead to improve educational equity, inclusion, empathy, student engagement and digital access for all. I enjoy blogging, and writing. My first book, One Drop of Kindness hit the bookstores in summer, 2019 and my second book, It’s Me, released on 11/15/2020. My third book, Monsters have Manners will be out in mid ‘22. I’ve hit the top, at times: US Olympic Swim Team Alternate, Pan American Games Gold Medalist, Coach of 4 time Olympian, Jason Lezak. I’ve seen the bottom, almost losing it all, which has brought me to the Glory of God’s path to sobriety for 20 months and counting now. In my 22 years as an educator, I view myself as a servant leader whose title is unimportant, but my positive impact on others counts most. Servitude is my passion, and education is my vehicle. I enjoy working with companies and people that are not afraid to push boundaries, be honest, are open to difficult conversations, and embrace ALL students. | Rallying Around 3 Keys of Executive Functioning with Mitch Weathers | 28 Jun 2024 | 00:24:48 | |
Join us for another insightful conversation with our monthly guest, Mitch Weathers, the founder of Organized Binder. In this episode, we dive deep into the critical aspects of executive functioning and explore the 3 keys that are essential for student success. Mitch shares his expertise on the importance of Tier 1 interventions and teacher efficacy in fostering executive functioning skills in all classrooms, not just special education. Discover why it’s vital to shift our focus and ensure that every student benefits from strategies that enhance their executive functioning abilities. Don’t miss this compelling discussion that challenges the status quo and advocates for inclusive and effective teaching practices.
About Mitch Weathers:
Mitch became a gifted teacher because he was a mediocre student.
Mitch rarely felt comfortable in the classroom. In fact, it took him 7 years for him to graduate from college.
Choosing to become a teacher, Mitch was fortunate enough to experience school as if it was happening all around him. He was unsure how to jump into his learning with confidence. There is a loneliness to experiencing your education as a passive object as opposed to an active subject.
From the moment he entered the classroom Mitch relied on his personal experiences as a learner. He recognized that what we teach, the content or curriculum, is secondary. We must first lay the foundation for learning before we can get to teaching.
Mitch designed Organized Binder to empower teachers with a simple but research-backed strategy to teach students executive functioning skills while protecting the time needed for content instruction. The secret is found in establishing a predictable learning routine that serves to foster safer learning spaces. When students get practice with executive functions by virtue we set them up for success.

| 209. Changed Instructional Habits: Featuring Kevin J. Butler | 17 Sep 2022 | 00:23:37 | |
This week’s guest, Kevin J. Butler, shares how he lost his passion to teach and how he transformed his teaching style to become more engaging. While teachers don’t train to be entertainers, teaching must capture students’ attention and at times entertain them. This doesn’t mean that every lesson has to be a Broadway musical number, but it does require educators to be intentional when engaging students in active learning. We discuss Kevin’s new book, Lights, Cameras, TEACH!, and how he brings the magic of the movies to the classroom, presenting a scene-by-scene script packed with film-inspired ideas for educators.
In this episode, we discuss:
About Kevin Butler: Kevin began teaching in 2002 in New York at a suburban public school on Long Island. He relocated to California to consult and teach at a startup charter school. For the last six years, Kevin taught fifth grade at an independent school in Los Angeles and was a member of the school's administrative team, serving as K-6 Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Kevin's classroom instruction focuses on creating authentic learning experiences while engaging his students in content-driven instruction. In the spring of 2020, Kevin was a guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show, where Kelly highlighted his dedication to his students during the Covid-19 crisis. In addition to teaching, Kevin speaks and presents at national educator conferences throughout the United States, including Teach Better, ASCD, and Teach Your Heart Out. Kevin also enjoys visiting schools and facilitating sessions and workshops on student engagement, classroom culture, and the importance of building relationships with students, parents, and colleagues. This fall, Kevin is extremely excited to be kicking off his twentieth year teaching sixth grade at a school in the city of West Hollywood. Follow Kevin J. Butler:

| 208. Helping Parents and Educators with Students who Struggle: Featuring Kyle Hill | 10 Sep 2022 | 00:37:46 | |
This week’s guest, Kyle Hill, shares how his role as a Special Education Lead and parent has uncovered a huge gap in the communication and relationship between the school, parents, and the student. Kyle provides wonderful advice and resources to help all parties succeed in creating an effective plan for our struggling students.
In this episode, we discuss:
About Kyle Hill: School was a struggle for Kyle Hill. In fact, as someone with undiagnosed ADHD, school was more of a chore than an opportunity. Due to his own experiences with academic and behavior challenges, Kyle decided to become an elementary, special education teacher to support students with their own unique needs. He served in this role for 19 years in both co-taught general education classrooms and self contained special education classrooms. Since then, he has become a district-wide resource lead, specializing in intervention programs, mentoring programs, transition services, and instructional or behavioral support coaching, all in an attempt to assist educators from Pre-K to 12th grade. His ultimate goal is to provide support and guidance for those who help students who struggle in some capacity. Kyle’s most important job and passion though, is being a father of 3 children who have their own unique challenges. Through learning how to support his own children, both he and his wife have learned the importance of working with outside organizations in order to help children and their families. He packages both of his passions into one organization as the founder of the RechargED Family. This allows Kyle to provide free content and resources for parents and educators who want to find ways to support kids. Whether it be through his podcasts like the Xhausted Educators show, the Parents RechargED show or the RechargED Family YouTube channel, Kyle aims to provide content for others so that children and teens get the support that they deserve. Also a part of the RechargED Family organization is Holding On To Learning LLC. As the owner, he works with individual families to answer any education or outside service related questions and provide them with resources to help their child who may be struggling in some capacity.
