Episode Twelve - Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs by Klô Pelgag and Ultimate Success Today by Protomartyr

Saison 1 · Épisode 12

vendredi 28 août 2020Durée 48:12

What's cracking with the knacking?! Welcome in to episode 12 of Adventures With New Music, your weekly journey into the land of new music with your new music chums Chris and Andy.

This week we chat about Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs by Klô Pelgag and Ultimate Success Today by Protomartyr.

Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs is Klô Plegags third album, released on the Secret City Records label. This is an extremely difficult album to define genre wise and the lyrics are entirely in French so this might not be the most accessible album covered on AINM this year. However, this is an album well worthy of your attention and the time spent with this album is really rewarded. Here's video of Klô talking about the making of the album and story behind it.

Described by James Newell Osterberg Jr. as "the best band we've got in America at the moment", Ultimate Success Today is the fifth studio album by Detroit four piece Protomartyr. Interesting background info fact fans - the title of the album came to vocalist Joe Casey after writing lyrics to this collection of songs while watching late night American informercials and on release of the album the band release a video for each of the tracks. Blimey! Have a gander at the wonderfully crazy video to album highlight Processed By The Boys.

As well as out two featured albums Andy has ventured out to a park and watched Down To Earth with everyones favourite Zac Efron, Chris has been knocking out homemade pizzas and watching The Last Dance on Netflix and between them they've checked out the new single from King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Courtney Marie Andrews new album.

For more info on the episode head to the episode page on our website and while you're there have a listen to the playlist which features a track from each of our 2020 albums.

Episode Eleven - Hit To Hit by 2nd Grade and The Fallen Crimson by Envy

Saison 1 · Épisode 11

vendredi 21 août 2020Durée 48:07

It's Friday, it's 9am, it's time for episode eleven of Adventures In New Music!*

And have we have got a couple of intriguingly brilliant albums for you this week dear listeners! First up it's Hit To Hit by 2nd Grade (Chris's choice) and The Fallen Crimson by Envy (Andy's choice).

2nd Grade are a power pop surf rock outfit from Philadelphia and are fronted by multi-instrumentalist Peter Gill. Think Beach Boys/Weezer/Big Star and you won't be too far off. The first thing to note about Hit To Hit is that it clocks in at 41 minutes, but has 24 songs on it - that's under 2 minutes a song! Madness!! And there is so much to enjoy here. Check out the video for Velodrome/My Bike and get yourself onboard with this wonderful album, it's one of the best we've featured on the pod (spoiler alert!).

Envy have been going for a long old time forming in Tokyo in 1992. After a few line-up changes over the years, this is the screamo groups seventh studio album and boy, is it a good un! Fans include Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite who even released a couple of the bands records on his Rock Action label, and Charles from the Wrens. The vocals and lyrics are the real stand out on this album, delivered completely in Japanese and flitting from spoken word to full on hardcore rock growl. It really is worth 54 minutes of your time.

As well as our featured albums can we nudge you in the direction of the new Future Islands track 'For Sure'. It's a good un and a real return to form for the Baltimore four piece. Get it downloaded and do the little Future Islands dance round your living room to it.

Andy has had a bit of a bluesy week and been checking out videos on instagram for a bit of guitar inspiration. RL Burnside, BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, tha knows. Chris has treated himself to a new drum kit (Gretsch Brooklyn in grey oyster if you're interested...)

Get in touch with the show at adventuresinnewmusic@gmail.com or through our website and do give us a follow on the old insta. And don't forget to like and subscribe to Adventures In New Music so we'll sneak in your podcast inbox each Friday at 9am GMT.

Episode Ten - Heaven To A Tortured Mind by Yves Tumor and Welcome To Bobby's Motel by Pottery

Saison 1 · Épisode 10

vendredi 14 août 2020Durée 44:13

Well we made it to episode ten, wow! Can you believe it, those last ten weeks have flown by!

Welcome along to Episode Ten of Adventures In New Music the podcast featuring two mates and two brand spanking new albums. This week Chris and Andy have a chat about Heaven To A Tortured Mind by Yves Tumor and Welcome To Bobby's Motel by Pottery.

Heaven To A Tortured Mind is Yves Tumor's fourth studio album. Expect an absolute melting pot of genres from experimental rock, soul and britpop on this impressive rollercoaster of an album. This album has had rave reviews and topped many peoples mid year best of charts so there's high hopes for this album. Lead single 'Gospel For A New Century' is a proper banger too, and that's a good a place as any to start if you fancied getting your teeth into this album.

Chris first heard Texas Drums by Pottery back in February and has been excitingly waiting for the release of this album since then. This album was finally released in June on Partisan Records (home to Idles, Cigarettes After Sex and Fontaines DC) after being put back a few months due to the corona virus. This album races from song to song, section to section and takes your breath away from the get go. For fans of bands such of Parquet Courts and White Denim. Dive in to Bobby Motel, wherever and whatever that is...

As well as our featured albums, this week has been a big week for both the chaps when it comes to checking out new stuff.

Chris has a couple of hip hop recommendations from 2020 – RTJ4 by Run The Jewels and in particular the track JU$T featuring Pharrell Williams and Zack de la Rocha, and he also loses his mind over the opening track from Alfredo by Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist, '1985'. Couple of top tracks there to satisfy your hip hop needs.

Andy's really gone to town on new stuff this week (as well as another revisit to the Deftones back catalogue in preparation for the new album which is getting teased). He's also discovered a singer/songwriter called Daniel Martin Moore and gets round to listening to the latest, and very highly critically acclaimed, Fiona Apple album 'Fetch The Bolt Cutters'.

There's also Andy's country corner in which he recommends having a gander at That's How Rumours Get Started by Margo Price, Xoxo by The Jayhawks and Co-Starring by Ray Wylie Hubbard (featuring amongst others, Mr Richard Starkey) so be sure to check those out if country is your thing.

Also, you must listen to The Avalanche by Owen. Owen is the solo project from American Football frontman Mike Kinsella and after the American Football album being one of the favourites of last year this album really doesn't disappoint. Beautifully intense and gorgeously magnificent!

Chris and Andy also checked out Jeremy Gara's new 'single' with varying opinions...

Episode Nine - Muzz by Muzz and The Menace Of Mechanical Music by Team Picture

Saison 1 · Épisode 9

vendredi 7 août 2020Durée 42:29

Welcome in to Episode Nine of Adventures In New Music, hope this sees you well!

Join Chris and Andy this week as they discuss Muzz by Muzz and The Menace Of Mechanical Music by Team Picture.

Muzz are somewhat of a supergroup featuring Paul Banks (Interpol), Josh Kaufman (Bonny Light Horseman) and Matt Barrick (The Walkmen) and, although playing together since 2015, this self titled album is their debut release. The track that peaked Chris's interest enough to select this album as his pick of the week was Red Western Sky which is a fantastic track, and up there for one of the best tracks of the year. Will the album keep up the high level of this lead track?!

Check out the rather creepy video to Red Western Sky here, and the brilliant isolation video (are people still doing these now?!) for Bad Feeling. One of the better isolation vids from this rather odd time we're living through.

Released on the 12th June 2020, The Menace Of Mechanical Music is the debut record from Leeds six piece Team Picture. After a chance encounter sitting next to a couple of members of Team Picture at a mutual friends wedding Andy, rather bravely, picked this as his album of the week. The album opens with a song in a time signature of seven so Chris should be happy. Simple things for Mr J. This is a must for fans of Arcade Fire and Kate Bush but what will the chaps think of it?

Fancy a little taster? Have a little look and see what you think of this performance of this is the from the album.

As well as the above Andy has been busy listening to new music as he finally gets round to listening to Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers (and about time to, it's proper bo!) As well as PB he also raves about Haim's latest offering 'Women In Music PT. III', 'Vespertine' by This Will Destroy You and the current album from Ray LaMontagne 'Monovision'. Chris has had less involved week of music listening, but has devoured half a baked feta. Yum.

There's also some pretty random Going For Gold banter. Why don't you come too?

Episode Eight - The Archer by Alexandra Savior and Deep Down Happy by Sports Team

Saison 1 · Épisode 8

vendredi 31 juillet 2020Durée 46:13

Friday I'm in love? Friday you've got a new pod!!

Hello, hello, it's time for episode 8 of Adventures In New Music with Chris and Andy, the podcast that takes two albums from 2020 and throws it's opinions of said albums around until we decide if it's is a hit or a miss.

On this weeks podder the boys are discussing The Archer by Alexandra Savior and Mercury nominated Deep Down Happy by Sports Team.

The Archer is Alexandra Savior's second album following on from 2017's Belladonna of Sadness which was co-written by Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys. Alexandra's journey to get to this album is a fascinating, and somewhat heartbreaking story but this really adds to the overall beauty of this stunning dreamy, cinematic album. Alexandra Savior has described her style as a "feminist angst horror film feel” and who are we to disagree?!

Deep Down Happy is the debut album by London based scamps Sports Team. Delivering an energetic and frantic sound that harks back to early Britpop, there is a lot of fun to be had in this album. The band, and in particular lead singer Alex Rice, have turned heads with there raucous live performances and we don't think it'll be too long before you see Sports Team gracing many a main stage at festivals, once they get up and running again.

Couple of live videos from out artists of the week that are worth having a look at. Both of these are live from Paste Studio. What a cracking channel for live sessions, you can easily get lost down the rabbit hole on their channel.

Alexandra Savior - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2aCCz0AvJo
Sports Team - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7z9_yYsqYN8

The Mercury Music Prize nominations were revealed this week and we have a bit of a confab about that. Who the front runners are and which ones standout to us. Third nomination for Michael Kiwanuka, is this his year? You certainly wouldn't bet against it...

Did you know Taylor Swift has released an album this week? Course you did. But guess what? It's bloomin' great mate! Ol' Tay Tay has collabed with (amongst others) Aaron and Bryce Dessner, Justin Vernon and Josh Kaufman and what a result we've been presented with. Miss Swift has really Shuck It Up with this album and treated it like a Blank Space. See what I did?! I know. 3 on 10 at best...sorry team.

As well as our albums Chris has been busy watching Defending Jacob on Apple TV, which reveals a lovely little musical surprise at the end of the series, and has also been listening to the wonderful new Phoebe Bridgers album 'Punisher'. By eck it's good!

One of our previous album artist choices, Poppy (who if you haven't come across you really should have a look at her work - she's crackers!) has done a rockin' cover of All The Things She Said by Tatu. This is really worth a listen!

And did someone ask for spider related banter? No, of course they didn't, but Chris has some anyway!

To get in touch with the show at adventuresinnewmusic@gmail.com and give us a follow on instagram. And don't forget to like and subscribe to Adventures In New Music so we'll sneak in your podcast inbox each Friday at 9am GMT.

Rave safe y'all!

Episode Seven - Beginners by Christian Lee Hutson and Eupnea by Pure Reason Revolution

Saison 1 · Épisode 7

vendredi 24 juillet 2020Durée 41:09

Welcome in to Adventures In New Music, the weekly podcast in which best mates Chris and Andy go on a musical journey to discover as much brand spanking new music as possible!

In episode seven Chris and Andy check out Beginners by Christian Lee Hutson and Eupnia by Pure Reason Revolution.

Christian Lee Hutson is a busy old chap and has his fingers in many tasty musical pies. Not just content with banging out this solo album, Christian has also written songs for Boy Genius, and pops up on numerous other albums (Bonny Light Horseman and Better Oblivion Community Centre to name just two). Phoebe Bridgers of Boy Genius returns the favour here by guesting on the record and being the one controlling the desk. https://christianleehutson.com

Big out shout to Secret Meeting fanzine from Preston who put us on to Beginners! http://www.secretmeeting.co.uk

Pure Reason Revolution are a Prog Rock band from London who have been on the scene since 2003. After numerous member changes and an eight year hiatus the band are back with their almost unpronounceable album 'Eupnia'. Rick Wakeman is a big fan and the band may or may not write their own Wikipedia. https://purereasonrevolution.bandcamp.com

As well as our two featured albums Andy gets all nostalgic about The Deftones after reading an interview in Kerrang with lead singer Chino Moreno, and starts to get excited about the possibility of a new album... https://www.kerrang.com/the-news/chino-moreno-talks-new-deftones-album-and-white-pony-20th-anniversary-celebrations/

Chris goes back to re-listen to one of his earlier stand out albums of the year, the self titled debut from Bonny Light Horseman, and discovers that one of this weeks featured artists pops up as a guest on the album. Cheeky! https://www.bonnylighthorseman.com

Adventures In New Music. And Pies.

Episode Six - Brave Faces Everyone by Spanish Love Songs and Architecture by Ist Ist

Saison 1 · Épisode 6

vendredi 17 juillet 2020Durée 44:17

It's Friday, and that means just one thing...it's time for your next Adventure In New Music! Grab a strong coffee, get your headphones at the ready and join Chris and Andy on their journey to discover as much new music as possible.

In episode six the fellas from the bridges discuss Brave Faces Everyone by Spanish Love Songs and Architecture by Ist Ist.

Spanish Love Songs are a five piece from LA who have been going strong since 2015. Brave Faces Everyone is the fourth album from the grouch rock emo punks and features lead single 'Beachfront Property'. Fun fact – lead singer Dylan played baseball to a high level throughout college and could have made it pro if it wasn't for a knee injury! http://www.spanishlovesongs.com

Architecture is the debut album from Manchester's alternative rockers Ist Ist. The rise of Ist Ist is testament to endurance and patience, the band started off playing the smaller clubs of the city in 2014 before working their way up to sell out Gorilla and The Ritz, and almost (damn you Corona Virus!) headline Academy Two. Ist Ist's story is one of hard work and DIY and is hugely impressive. https://www.facebook.com/ististmusic/

As well as our two featured albums there's more controversy as Chris's quest to find the worst Beatles song kicks up a gear with people sending in veerrrrrryyyyyy differing opinions.

Andy revisits Rage Against The Machine (was it Bruno Brooks or Mark Goodier that played it on the Radio One breakfast show?!) and continues his obsession with Grimes from way back in Episode One. Chris recommends new single by The Lounge Society 'Generation Game' https://www.facebook.com/loungesocietyHB/

Chris's film recommendation – Parasite https://www.criterion.com/films/30619-parasite Unless you've been in a dark room for the past six months (which let's face it, most of us have...) I'm sure this film will be already on your radar. But if you haven't already seen it please do so immediately!
