| Rio Marathon met Black Jesus and the Moment Marcus & Rob Went Too Far #193 | 16 Jul 2024 | 01:22:36 | |
In this episode, Phil recaps his adventure at the Rio De Janeiro Marathon, sharing highlights of the culture, the race, and a mishap even his 'Black Jesus' powers couldn't prevent. We catch up on everyone's training: Marcus and Phil are gearing up for the Berlin Marathon, Rob is preparing for the Chicago Marathon, and CJ is back in the game training for the NYC Marathon. CJ is back. We give an update on our Jordan sneakers, discussing the hits and misses, with Phil calling out the guys for not showing up in their J's at the marathon expos. Rob gives a part two to the experience in the Boston medical tent thermometer check story. Recorded on Juneteenth, Marcus and Rob have a meaningful conversation about the diverse shades of blackness... Marcus talks about the origins and goals of the One Percent Running Club. We also chat about our long runs, with Phil detailing running 20-mile sessions on a 400m track… Why? This is like the barber shop chat for running podcasts, and whilst we give as good as we get, the respect is always there as we look to bring out the best in each other.
| How to run a sub 2:50 marathon with Sam Sutherland - Chasing a Marathon PR #192 | 08 Jul 2024 | 00:43:13 | |
I've achieved eight sub-three-hour marathons, yet my personal best has stood for years. This series documents my journey to set a new record at the 2024 Berlin Marathon. In this episode, I talk to Sam Sutherland, who's progressed from 3:30 to a sub-2:50 marathon. He shares insights from our previous conversation offline, now recorded for the podcast. Achieving a sub-2:50 time is my next goal, and I'm excited to share the valuable insights from Sam's experience. Sam embarked on his marathon journey with the 2015 Bristol to Bath Marathon, clocking just over 3h30 alongside his brother. With a newfound focus on training, Sam tackled the London Marathon next, achieving an impressive sub-3-hour finish in 2h57. Through dedication and smart training, he has steadily improved his time to 2h37, crediting consistency and injury prevention for his progress. Looking forward, Sam aims to break the 2h30 barrier, but it's mainly to enjoy running all over the world and make friends whilst doing it!

| #92 - Kevin Quinn from heart surgery to 2:22 marathon, coaching, and pacing the Olympic marathon trails | 31 May 2021 | 00:58:06 | |
In episode 92, I speak with Kevin Quinn, a father of three. A 2.22.12 marathon runner and head coach at Team Real Runners. In 2016, after running 2 hrs 25 mins at the 2015 London Marathon Kev found out he had 4 holes in his heart (largest being 1.78cm) and had to have heart repair surgery to close the 4 holes in his heart. This meant he lost 20-25% oxygen for every heartbeat. The operation was a success and despite getting older, he is now running faster than ever, winning the New York City virtual marathon. We talk about the impact his father and sister passing away has on him today. It’s a great and rounded conversation showing the different sides of a runner’s life. ————————————————————— His Instagram links are:

Aoife Cooke won the Cheshire Elite Marathon and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics and will represent Ireland, she finished in 2:28:36 (this interview starts at 24:17). In both conversations we dive into the training build up, the race, and the work leading towards Olympics. I wish them both a strong Olympic build up and great marathon race experience. ————————————————————— The links are:

| #88 - Jon Hilling on earning a London marathon championship place | 04 May 2021 | 01:05:17 | |
This conversation is with Jon Hilling, a runner and at the time of the interview is a nutrition student. We dive into some things that work for him when fuelling his marathon training. We talk about mental health and the impact that sport can play in ones well-being. However if you’re experiencing any mental health challenges, these are some UK resources available to support you:
Jon swam competitively at a national level in his youth, before her turned his attention towards running. He used the same diligence to run in the high 3 hour range to then running a marathon PR of 2:39:55 at the 2020 Dorney Lake Marathon, and earning a London championship place in the process. We discuss what it was like for us running a marathon in the new race format, adhering to the COVID-19 global pandemic, in less than ideal weather. Plus we discuss much more about what a runner’s life means to him. ————————————————————— His social links are:

| #87 - Nathan Martin on setting a marathon PR and breaking a national record | 26 Apr 2021 | 00:58:20 | |
This conversation is with Nathan Martin, who ran 2:11:05 at the Marathon Project in December 20 2020. Not only was this a PR but Nathan broke Herm Atkins’ record of 2:11:52, by running the fastest marathon ever run by a Black man born in the United States. This record stood since 1979. I recorded this episode, shortly after the Marathon Project, but I held it back because there were a few other podcasts, and I wanted to give this episode some clear space once the dust had settled. | #86 - Amy Haas on running across the USA, 13.1 miles at a time | 19 Apr 2021 | 01:07:11
This conversation is with Amy Haas who ran her first half marathon in 2013 in Chicago, Illinois. She ran with purpose and with passion, in memory of her cousin Scotty, who passed away many years ago from childhood cancer. She and her cousin chose to run in Chicago that year in order to raise money for cancer research. This was the catalyst for her goal. Amy truly believes that the journey is the reward as she continues to reach her goal of running a half marathon in every state. Starting in Chicago with a time of nearly 2:00, Amy has chipped away at that time year after year, race after race, and state after state - with a most recent PR of 1:25 in 2020. At the forefront of her running, is enjoying the journey, with the people close to you as the stories that make each race and state so unique. Whilst aspects of running can be about leaving it all on the table, crucially it’s about listening to your body and learning to trust yourself. We also discuss the Run with Aim Program, which is a supportive and encouraging community of female runners from around the world that come together to run, have fun, and get stuff done in running and life. | Stress Management & Finding Your Running Why's - Boston Marathoners Round Table #183 | 19 Feb 2024 | 01:13:44
In this episode of A Runner’s Life podcast, Corey, Phillip, Rob, and yours truly talk about stress management in our training, and uncover the deeper reasons behind why we run. No fluff, just real talk. We kick off with Rob's beauty updates, a segment that's quickly become a fan favourite. But this time, he's delivering a lesson we never knew we needed. Then, it's all about CJ's latest endeavour—the Jordan purchase before Tokyo. And of course, Phil's got his Jordans on the clutch, providing a YouTube-style review of the new Air Jordan (AJ) 3 Craft Ivory. We talk about the release of the new AJ4 Bred reimagined. Plus we give our reactions to the Olympic trials, including a shoutout to Sara Hall, we cover it all. Ever wondered what Eliud Kipchoge would be like if he weren't the Yoda of running? And he was just an American working full time trying to qualify for the American Olympic marathon trials? We explore that, along with sharing personal experiences like Rob ending up in the medical tent after emptying the tank. Stress management takes centre stage as Phil surprises us with an unexpectedly honest solution. We discuss how stress impacts our running and everyday lives, minus the scientific jargon. But it's not all serious talk. Phil shares a poignant story about finding his "why" in memory of a friend, reminding us of the deeper motivations that drive us forward. And finally, we discuss the significance of the Boston jacket—when it's appropriate wear and when it's just a flex. This week’s episode it brought to you by PILLAR Performance. PILLAR is a sports micro-nutrition company, and I’m testing out a a few products in my build for the Boston and London marathon double. | #85 - Troy Busot on running, entrepreneurship, self development, and the importance of catharsis | 12 Apr 2021 | 01:19:06
“Once you feel that catharsis, once you have that lightbulb moment, once you feel what it’s like to actually live a little bit... In general the mundanity of life gets put out like a cigarette butt.” ————————————————————— The thing about life is that whilst your first attempt may not work, keep trying and work smarter the next time. This episodes guest has a background in software development and designed a website called VirtuRace, which allowed runners to manually upload times and courses so they could race virtually. But it gained little traction because programs like Google Maps weren’t available yet. About five years later, Strava, filled that niche. After visiting a triathlon event, Troy did some digging online. He discovered that some websites like Cool Running and Active posted results, but only from a handful of races. Various running clubs handled local race results online. But no website existed that aggregated results on a national scale. So that was the spark for creating and founding Athlinks. Athlinks is the largest results database for competitive endurance athletes in the world. They pull in times for running races, triathlon, swimming, cycling, mountain biking, and pretty much any timed endurance sport that you can think of. After 15 years, 350 million results, a million and a half events, Troy will be on to his next adventure helping people live happier, healthier lives. If you’ve ever been on a trail run, with a friend and have had an open conversation about running and life. This conversation reminded me of that. ————————————————————— His social links are: ————————————————————— This episode is sponsored by Tracksmith, a brand which actively represents and supports the development of a runner’s life in the running community. | #84 - Chris Mosier - The Man Who Changed The Olympics and Steered a Social Shift | 05 Apr 2021 | 00:56:06
It’s not often that I get the privilege of speaking to someone who is the first in their field and blazing a trail for others to follow. In this conversation I spoke with the international athlete and history maker Chris Mosier. In 2015, he was the spark for changing the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) policy on transgender athletes to provide such individuals with the right to represent their country at the Olympic Games. In 2016, Chris was pivotal in additional policy change within the IOC, by expanding the rights of transgender athletes to take part in the Olympic Games without the previously required necessity of gender reassignment surgery. “I was able to not only get policies created and policies changed. I was able to change the Olympic policy in 2016. All of those things happened because I thought what’s the worst that could happen... If they say no, so I’ll try again. I’ll try a different way. I thought there was no reason why I should compromise or give up a part of myself... There is a real opportunity, for who do I wish that I would’ve seen when I was a young person, and I can now set-out to be that person for the younger version of myself and for every kid that needs to see that today.” Chris is a hall of fame triathlete, All-American duathlete, 2-time National Champion, and a 6-time member of Team USA. In 2015 he became the first known transgender man to represent the United States in international competition. He is talented across multiple disciplines including race walking and was the first openly transgender athlete to compete in an Olympic Trials in a category different than their sex assigned at birth. We explore his work, mindset as an athlete and an advocate for change. Chris also explains based visual assumptions on gender, how people have treated him differently from the perspective of looking at a white woman, compared to looking at a white man. And how this furthers his advocacy of human rights across colour and for the LGBTQ+ rights movement. ————————————————————— His social links are:

In this episode I speak with social entrepreneur Mark White who is leading the Run Grateful initiative to combine gratitude and movement. We dive into what has prompted him to create businesses and initiatives that have a social benefit. Which were prompted by him facing challenges in early adulthood, from deep darkness, addiction, and hopelessness. “Back when I was 18, I had a choice to make. Backed into a corner, and after many negative consequences, I had a moment where I realised I had enough courage to see my reality with an honest feeling of admitting that I was lost, uninspired, with no hope and consumed with fear. I had no direction, structure, or clear understanding of who I was, where I was going and how I was going to get there!” This conversation focuses on the One Grateful Mile event, where the participant dedicates one mile during their walk or run to something or someone they feel grateful for each day in December 2020.
