Manisha’s Inspiring Journey: IVF, Identity, and Independence

Épisode 32

mardi 10 septembre 2024Durée 01:03:49

In this powerful episode, we sit down with Manisha Morgan, an Indian woman raised in the UK, born in India whose life is a bold mix of defiance, resilience, and unapologetic authenticity. From dealing with racism in Bolton to breaking cultural norms within the Indian community, Manisha’s journey is anything but ordinary.

Growing up in an immigrant family, in Bolton Manisha faced prejudice. She feared fireworks thrown through her letterbox. Yet, despite the weight of cultural expectations and external pressures, she has consistently chosen to build her own path.

Manisha shares the pivotal moments that shaped her life, like defying her father’s disapproval to pursue a career as an air hostess, or how she navigated the deeply personal pain of fertility struggles, enduring five fresh IVF treatments in just 12 months. She opens up about the emotional toll it took, her grief, and how she found the strength to tell people she needed space, all while holding onto the hope of becoming a mother.

As a working mother later in life, Manisha gets real about mum guilt, the balancing act, and how open conversations helped her redefine what it means to “have it all.” She reminds us that failure isn’t the end, it’s simply a redirection.

Whether you’re part of the Indian community or not, this episode is a must-listen for anyone trying to break free from the expectations that hold us back. Manisha’s story is raw, honest, and full of lessons about resilience, accountability, and learning to thrive on your own terms.

Tune in to hear: - How Manisha navigated her dual identity, balancing her Indian roots with her British upbringing - Her raw reflections on fertility struggles and finding strength through loss - The challenges and triumphs of being a business owner mother in a world that often expects too much - Why she believes embracing change and failure is the key to growth

Manisha’s story isn’t just about breaking boundaries - it’s about owning your life, no matter the obstacles. Join us for a candid, no-nonsense conversation about culture, identity, and pushing past the limits society sets.

Shining a Light on Family: Love, Laughter, and a Dash of Grit with Joe Roberts-Walker

Épisode 31

mardi 3 septembre 2024Durée 01:00:02

In this episode, we sit down with Joe Roberts-Walker, a man whose life has been a rollercoaster of joy, loss, and the messy, beautiful moments in between. Joe grew up in a household where laughter and music were as common as breathing, and his parents’ “work hard, play hard” mentality set the tone for a childhood filled with unforgettable memories.
But life isn’t all sunshine and sing-alongs. Joe opens up about the challenges he faced navigating different cultures, confronting the harsh realities of racism, and learning that sometimes, life throws you challenges you never saw coming. He doesn’t shy away from the tough topics; instead, he tackles them head-on, sharing his journey with honesty and a touch (okay, a bit more than just a touch) of humour that reminds us not to take ourselves too seriously, even in tough times.
Joe’s story takes a poignant turn as he reflects on the loss of his brother, a moment that shattered his world and left a void where a big personality once thrived. He candidly discusses how he’s had to navigate this grief for himself and his parents. In the midst of this sorrow, Joe found strength through his family and friends. The birth of his niece, Ren, brought sadness mingled with hope, reminding him that life continues and new memories can still be made. She became a beacon of light in a dark time.
This isn’t just another feel-good episode; it’s a raw, real conversation about life, the power of family, and how we all cope with life’s curveballs. Joe’s insights will make you laugh, cry, and, most importantly, reflect on what truly matters.
Tune in for an episode that’s as real as it gets—no fluff, just the powerful story of a man who’s faced it all and come out the other side with a smile.

The Chip Paradox: Laura Pettitt's Perspective

mardi 18 juin 2024Durée 33:31

Laura Pettitt describes herself as ordinary, but she is anything but. Outspoken, humble, and driven by a strong moral compass, Laura shares her thoughts on growing up amidst the dichotomies of social class, being underestimated by teachers, navigating complicated family relationships, being gay in a 'safe' place like London, and seeing organisations that still need to do more to support diverse individuals.

Growing up in a challenging environment, Laura, thanks to her brother boxed to release her anger. Often underestimated by teachers, she proved her intelligence and grit despite being labeled the underdog time and time again. Her family life was complex, but she is proud of everything her mum strived to give her and her siblings, providing a foundation that fuelled her drive to succeed.

Laura reflects on how her background, including her working-class chip, shaped who she is today. She later in life learned through lived experiences and people she met along the way the diverse experiences people bring to the table, understanding that wealth and privilege don’t make life or friendships necessarily easier. She faced societal expectations head-on, outperforming her peers and ultimately being an awesome human. Laura has an abundance of moral, ethical, and value-driven principles that guide her.

Join us to hear Laura's story finding strength in diversity, being a kind person and creating an aligned and successful life.

More Than a Rugby Player: Sam Smith’s Story of Pressure, Purpose, and Personal Transformation

mardi 11 juin 2024Durée 48:55

Join us for an incredibly moving episode with Sam Smith, a former professional rugby player for Harlequins and Worcester Warriors, as he shares his journey on his first podcast.

Sam reflects on his early life in a happy, loving family home. At the age of 11, his mum became ill, and he learned to develop a sixth sense to gauge what he would find behind the door when returning from school. He was always striving to make his family happy and constantly felt like he was failing. This pattern of being a "doer" and pleasing people defined much of his life. His self-worth became deeply intertwined with his identity as a rugby player, leading to immense pressure and a need to please his coaches and parents.

Sam candidly shares moments of disillusionment, like spending Wednesdays hungover in bed—an alarming sign for a professional athlete that shouldn't have been ignored. Due to an injury, Sam had to retire from rugby early, and he dived into entrepreneurship, turning his love of coffee into a successful business. However, did it provide Sam with what he was looking for?

Despite knowing his parents were supportive, he struggled to find the words to ask for help. Post-rugby life brought anger and frustration. When he asked for help, he received sterile CBT sessions, leading him to believe he was the problem.

The turning point came when he met Hugh, someone who helped make him feel normal and understand he wasn't alone.

Now, Sam emphasises the importance of purpose—something you feel in your bones and soul. He aims to help others wake up to the stories they tell themselves, leading to life-changing realisations.

Tune in to hear Sam’s honest reflections on life before, during, and after sports, finding true purpose, and the courage to ask for help. His story has it all: laughter, tears, resilience, self-awareness, and the magic of discovering what truly matters.

The Power of Choice and Luck with Toni Kent

mardi 4 juin 2024Durée 46:03

In this heartfelt episode, Toni Kent shares her powerful journey from challenging beginnings to professional success, navigating family complexities and societal expectations.

Toni reflects on her early life, often playing a pseudo-parenting role with her eldest brother for her four younger siblings—she was even her mum's birthing partner. Despite the struggles and losing her father at a young age, there were lots of moments of joy. A poignant memory is her mom's note that read "good riddance to bad rubbish," which meant "I need you."

Toni opens up about her vulnerabilities, finding solace in great friends who made her feel safe. She helps demystify the corporate world by sharing her background and helping organisations in understanding social mobility better.

She tackles societal judgments and structural inequalities, contrasting her own opportunities with those of a less privileged family member. Toni's career, spanning over 20 years, highlights her resilience and determination, she shares some research she conducted using fiscal study data.

As a young adult, Toni shares that she didn't want children, influenced by her mom's struggles. She was inspired by Lisa Goodchild's episode where Lisa shares "NO" means "next opportunity," aligning with her values and experiences.

Tune in to hear Toni Kent's candid reflections on life, career, and the power of choice and sibling hierarchy. Her story is a testament to resilience, self-awareness, and the relentless pursuit of growth.

Harriet JW's Journey: Party Animal to Music Mogul to Mum to Her Freedom Number

mardi 21 mai 2024Durée 50:34

Harriet JW dreamed of scoring goals, but life had other plans. At 16, she spent two weeks in a coma—was it because she was in doing something she should, or a misfortunate accident? Waking up felt like a scene from a movie, a white room, with "Mad World" from Donnie Darko playing in the background, leaving her wondering what had happened.

Harriet wears many hats, evolving from a party animal to someone who does things her own way and wants to have a real impact to artist today. She's worked with incredible artists like Bastille, Kacey Musgraves, The Lumineers, and Ed Sheeran, building the Secret Sessions YouTube channel and hosting music events at places like Hospital Club and Soho Farmhouse. When COVID-19 hit, her business pivoted to artist development, helping new talents build their music as a business.

Harriet continued to face new challenge's with her wife’s and her IVF journey. The couple endured 7-9 cycles of failed treatments, a time when Harriet felt completely out of control.

There's a curiosity in Harriet's journey, and I feel like there's more to her story. Perhaps she'll join us again to share more in the future.

From being the life of the party to someone who you would find in the corner of the room in deep conversations equally makes the listener curious. With a background in filmmaking from St Martins and a fine art video pathway, she embraced YouTube early on. Music and visuals have always been her way of connecting with people, evoking emotions and interaction.

She talks about the "achievement trap" always striving for the next big thing.
Tune in to hear Harriet’s incredible journey of resilience, transformation, and relentless curiosity.

Becoming a father at 22 gave Jack a reason to live, but he also grappled with deep-seated beliefs inherited from life without a father. Through men's work and a journey of curiosity, Jack confronted his repressed emotions and expanded his understanding of himself and his needs.

Facing resistance and fear head-on, Jack explored his trauma, childhood struggles, and financial hardships, creating space to process his feelings and move away from a victim mindset. Compassion, understanding, and acceptance became guiding principles, allowing Jack to integrate his past.

In this episode, Jack encourages listeners to trust themselves, accept where they are, and embrace change with the intuition to follow curious questions wherever they may lead. You may start your own journey with judgment, but be open to explore it.

Tune in to be inspired as Jack candidly shares his journey with mental health, self-worth and trauma. While he describes himself as a work in progress, he has created positive change in his life.
