In the previous episode, I asked asked James questions regarding the role of slavery in the American Revolution and in this episode, we focus more on the question of genocide and the racism of the American Founding Fathers. The totality of the American project and its contradictions are important to analyze for leftists, and that includes the good, the bad, and the ugly.

In this episode of the 1Dime Radio podcast, I am joined by James Vaughn, a Marxist historian at the University of Chicago, to discuss the history of the American Revolution and what people on the left tend to get wrong about it. James explains how the "progressive" narrative of the American Revolution differs from the classical Marxist position on the American Revolution and the history of bourgeois revolutions in general. We will see how the ways in which Marx, Engels, Lenin, Kautsky, and Rosa Luxembourg viewed the American Revolution were radically different from the ways in which the contemporary left (both in Academia and in the activist world) viewed the American Revolution.

In this episode of the 1Dime Radio Podcast, I am here with Joshua Dávila (Aka The Blockchain Socialist, who hosts The Blockchain Socialist podcast and the Blockchain Socialist blog. He also is the founder of the Breadchain co-operative, which we will talk about later. Joshua recently published a wonderful book titled “Blockchain Radicals: How Capitalism Ruined Crypto and How to Fix It,” which got the co-sign of Vitalik Buterin, the brain behind Ethereum. In our discussion, Joshua illuminates the misconceptions often assumed by people on "The Left" with regard to cryptocurrency. He details the ways that capitalist has influenced the crypto space and proposes paths toward rectifying its course.

The discussion covers the origins and history of crypto, the politics of Bitcoin & Ethereum, misconceptions surrounding NFTs and environmental concerns, the radical potential of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs), and various practical examples of how leftist/socialist/communist organizers can make use cryptocurrency and blockchain technology more broadly.

This comprehensive two-part chat provides deep dives into the practical applications and real-world implications of blockchain technology in fostering post-capitalist forms of organization, challenging both enthusiasts and skeptics to rethink their assumptions about crypto.

Ibn Khaldun and Karl Marx (Ft. Sabah Alnasseri)26 Feb 202400:58:15

Listen to Part 2 (the backroom) and other exclusive episodes on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/OneDime

In this episode of the 1Dime Radio podcast, I am joined by Professor Sabah Alnasseri, a professor of Middle Eastern Studies at York University, to discuss Ibn Khaldun and his classic text, The Muqaddimah. In particular, we discuss Ibn Khaldun's similarities with Karl Marx as a social scientist and a proto-historical materialist. Sabbah and I share a Marxist interpretation of The Muqaddimah that demystifies Ibn Khaldun's materialist class analysis and misconceptions surrounding his key concepts such as "Royal Authority," "Asabiyyah," and more.

Simultaneously a philosopher, historian, and often considered a father of modern economics as well as an early trailblazer of what would eventually become the discipline of sociology. Ibn Khaldun was among the first proper social scientists to develop a holistic "science of society" - something quite close to what we today call "historical materialism."

Part 2 (the backroom) is on the applicaton of Ibn Khaldun's thought to the current state of contemporary imperialist powers (like the US, Israel) in the face of an emerging multipolar world with Russia, China, and BRICS playing a larger role in the face of declining US Hegemony.

Ibn Khaldun's Theory of Civilization (Ft. Adnan Husain)15 Feb 202401:51:41

Get access to Part 2 and more exclusive episodes on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/OneDime

This episode of the 1Dime Radio podcast is all about the ideas of Ibn Khaldun and his classic text The Muqaddimah. Simultaneously a philosopher and a historian, and often considered to be "the first sociologist," Ibn Khaldun was among the first proper "social scientists" to develop a "science of society" - something quite close to what we today call "historical materialism."

What insights can the work of a 14th century Medieval Arab thinker give us often today? Quite a lot, actually. Ibn Khaldun's insights on the cyclical rise and decline of civilizations, political power, religion, "Royal Authority" and his famous (but misunderstood) concept of "Asabiyyah" ("Group feeling"), were not only ahead of his time, but also have a lot to teach us today.

To unpack the key ideas of Ibn Khaldun and discuss interpretations of The Muqaddimah, I am joined by professor Adnan Husain, a historian at Queens University who specializes in Middle Eastern history and Medieval European history. He is also the co-host of the Guerilla History podcast with Breht O'Shea from Revolutionary Left Radio

In part two of the podcast (the backroom) on Patreon, Adnan and I discuss the ambiguities surrounding Ibn Khaldun's Writing and problems with popular interpretations of his work, such as that of Robert Irwin. In it, I ask Adnan's opinion on my hypothesis (articulated in a paper that will eventually get published) that Ibn Khaldun's apparent "contradictions" and instances of "Platonism" (which problematize his generally materialist system) may not be unaccounted contradictions, but deliberate acts of "esoteric writing" to avoid persecution, a method of reading texts "between the lines" popularized by Leo Strauss in his seminal text "Persecution and the Art of Writing." The Final Crisis of Capitalism? Automation, Ecology and SOLUTIONS (Ft. Ted Reese)08 Feb 202400:56:48

Part 2 on the Socialist Transition is available on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/OneDime

In this episode of 1Dime Radio, I am joined by the Marxist theorist Ted Reese to discuss his book 'Socialism or Extinction'. We discuss Marxist crisis theory/ “breakdown theory” and Karl Marx’s theory of the “tendency of the rate of profit to fall” in capitalism, elaborated by Henryk Grossman. Ted Reese discusses the “final contradictions” of capitalism, such as automation, the ecological crisis, and the “everything bubble” that could lead to the final breakdown of capitalism. Ted explains why Keynesian Social Democracy and the Green New Deal can’t solve the root problem and prevent capitalism’s inevitable tendency towards crisis.

In Part 2 of the podcast (for Patrons) we discuss the viability of various specific solutions to the climate crisis, such as “overpopulation”, degrowth, and different forms of clean energy and sustainable resources such as Hemp. In this bonus episode, we also discuss the particularities of a communist transition and what stages of socialism could look like. This involves questions regarding the logistics of democracy, communism, labor, distribution, planning, dealing with poverty, transitioning away from the capitalist mode of production, and preventing counter-revolution. We think it is important to think seriously about the big questions regarding alternatives to capitalism and how to get there, which can be quite challenging to envision.

Are Liberalism and Marxism Compatible? (Ft. Matt McManus)25 Jan 202400:59:31

Part 2 is available on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/OneDime

In this episode of 1Dime Radio, I am joined by Matt McManus, political theorist and professor at the University of Michigan who is currently writing a book titled “The Political Theory of Liberal Socialism” and has been the author of various books such as “Postmodern Conservatism” and is a frequent contributor to Jacobin Magazine. He is also a co-ost of the Academic Edgelords podcast. I first found Matt through the Diet Soap Media podcast and the PlasticPills podcast. In this discussion, Matt and I discuss the mixed relationship between radical liberal thought and the socialist left. Matt advocates for a kind of “Liberal socialism,” and I ask some critical questions to examine Liberalism’s compatibility with socialist ideals and bring up some common Marxist criticisms, arguments, and objections to liberal ideas. This discussion encompasses the ideological framework, key principles, and potential contradictions of Marxist and Liberal perspectives on freedom, property, law, individual rights, and democracy, drawing from the works of influential figures like Thomas Paine, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, John Stuart Mill, and John Rawls. In part 2, we discuss the controversial challenges involving democracy, legitimacy, and liberty in the socialist transition that communist and social democrat regimes have historically faced.

Support the show and get exclusive content: https://www.patreon.com/OneDime Read More with Speechify: https://speechify.com/?source=fb-for-mobile&via=1Dime In this episode of the 1Dime Radio podcast, we discuss the influence that the so-called "Professional Managerial Class" (PMC) exerts on the political scene, class structures, and the ideology of the right and the contemporary "left." Discussion revolves around PMC's intersection with identity politics, its role in the dissolution of the Democrats' working-class base, and its permeation in academia. In this episode, we dive into the Origins of the PMC and the history of the theory surrounding it. This includes the work of Barbara Ehrenreich, James Burnham, Tomas Frank, Catherine Liu, among others I also express some of my criticisms of PMC discourse and the problem of "class identity politics." There are numerous people who have written about the PMC. Adolph Reed, Catherine Liu, David Graeber, and many more. For this episode, I decided to bring on David McKerracher and Elton L.K. =, who have a short course on  @theory_underground  that is dedicated to understanding the PMC and the history of the theory behind it. Nietzschean Leftism: A Critical Look (Ft. Daniel Tutt)11 Dec 202302:01:59

In this episode of the 1Dime radio podcast, I am joined by philosopher Daniel Tutt host of the Emancipations Podcast, to discuss his upcoming book "How To Read Like a Parasite", which presents a rich critique of how Leftists interpret Friedrich Nietzsche and Nietzsche's broader impact on the left today and throughout history.

Daniel Tutt shares insights into Nietzsche's influence on leftist thought, emphasizing how his theories can be both valuable and problematic. The discourse explores Nietzsche's impact on left-wing thinkers ranging from Gilles Deleuze, Georges Bataille, and The Bolsheviks to Huey Newton and Jack London. Tutt draws on some critics of Nietzsche, such as György Lukács and Domenico Losurdo's book Nietzsche: The Aristocratic Rebel.

In this dialogue, we disset Nietzsche's views on politics, culture, class, slave morality, resentment, otium, truth and and the will to power.

Tutt's upcoming book calls for a 'parasitic' interpretation of Nietzsche, in which we should take Nietzche as a challenge to the left and learn from his ideas while acknowledging that he is an enemy of the left rather than trying to ignore his reactionary politics to reinterpret his philosophy as being compatible with a Marxist emancipatory politics.

These past two podcasts on Nietzche are my attempt to foster dialogue between left-Nietzchians, who believe a synthesis between Nietzche and Marx (or socialist policies more broadly) and left more skeptical thinkers, and see Nietzsche more as an enemy/challenge to the Left who should still be studied, rather than a thinker whose politics can be reconciled with a socialist/communist politics. Regardless of your views, Nietzsche and his philosophy are incredibly relevant in the age of late capitalism.

What Can Nietzsche Teach the Left?29 Nov 202301:30:07

Join our community: https://www.patreon.com/OneDime

In this episode, I am joined by Devin Goure to discuss the philosophy of Fredrich Nietzche and what people can learn from his core concepts. In particular, we discuss why socialists should read Nietzsche, his challenge to the left, and how Nietzche has already influenced left-wing thinkers such as Deleuze, Foucault, and the Frankfurt School. Devin Goure is a self-described "Left Nietzschean" scholar who received his Ph.D. in Philosophy at Yale University in 2019, and his dissertation involved the works of Nietzsche.

In this episode, we discuss some key contributions of Nietzsche’s philosophy and their application to the broader political “left.” This includes ideas such as slave morality, will to power, the death of god, affirmation, and Nietzsche's critique of capitalism. I also question Devin regarding left interpretations of Nietzche and the role of Nietzche’s reactionary politics and views regarding elitism, hierarchy, perspectivism, nihilism, decadence, equality, class, and his aristocratic rebel politics.

Psychoanalysis vs Modern Therapy02 Nov 202301:48:26

Join our community: https://www.patreon.com/OneDime

In this episode of 1Dime Radio, Tony (aka 1Dime) is joined by the autodidact psychoanalysis wizard Andrew Flores to discuss how certain assumptions of modern therapy, pop psychology, and mainstream psychology differ from Psychoanalysis, particularly Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytic theory and practice.

My guest, Andrew Flores (also known as “The Big Sig”, and part of the Young Žižekians collective called “The Vanishing Mediators”),  has an essay titled “Therapism, Psychoanalysis, and Ideology featured in the new book Underground Theory Vol 1 (featuring Slavoj Zizek, Alenka Zupancic, and a bunch of nobodies, like myself! In his article, Andrew argues that much modern therapy functions as “ideology” for contemporary capitalism, and he critiques popular psychology figures such as Jordan Peterson, Gabor Mate, and Phil Stutz, Jonah Hill's therapist, popularized in Jonah Hill's latest Netflix documentary titled "Stutz" , which is about the life and psycho-therapeutic techniques of Jonah Hill's therapist, Phil Stutz. In his talk with Theory Underground, Andrew has an illuminating critique of Phil Stutz as the embodiment of popular therapy today from a Lacanian psychoanalytic perspective.

In this episode,  Andrew and I discuss the limitations and misconceptions associated with contemporary therapy practices, also known as “therapism”,  while contrasting it against the intricate theories of psychoanalytic therapy developed by Sigmund Freud and further elaborated upon by Jacques Lacan. He delves into the societal manifestation of therapism, critiquing figures in pop psychology, and key concepts of psychoanalysis such as the death drive, trauma and the role of sexual repression in personal problems. Andrew talks about the pervasive issues of the overly simplistic approach of many psychological therapies currently championed in the mainstream and emphasizes the significance of the unconscious, language and desire in psychoanalysis.

The Changing World Order DEBUNKED (Ft. Andrés Bernal)11 Jul 202201:49:40

Debunking Ray Dalio's viral video (and book) titled "Principles for Dealing with the Changing World Order." Ray Dalio is a billionaire investor who recently released a video titled "Principles for Dealing with the Changing World Order" (which is based on his book of the same title): https://youtu.be/xguam0TKMw8

The video put together by his team has been heavily promoted by the YouTube algorithm, reaching a a staggering 15 MILLION views. However, the video is filled with bad economics, blatant contradictions, ideological myths, misleading generalizations of history, and a backward neoliberal understanding of how money and inflation work. Dalio's flawed assumptions about economic history and the nature of money shape his problematic implications and neoliberal technocratic "centrist" political prescriptions.

This episode of the 1Dime Radio podcast aims to debunk this Ray Dalio's video by deconstructing his talking points. In doing so, I am joined by Andrés Bernal, a MMT advocate, researcher, lecturer, and policy adviser (former advisor to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez). You can find his links and some of his work here:

Legalize All Drugs? 04 Jul 202201:49:41

The War on Drugs has failed. Prohibition does not work. But why? What is the alternative? Should we support drug decriminalization or drug legalization? If so, should all drugs be legal and regulated by the state? Would this be a good idea under capitalism?

In this episode of the 1Dime Radio Podcast, I am joined by Mark Edwards from the excellent UltraViolet podcast. Mark is passionate about the topic of harm reduction and drug policy, and has lots of first hand experience with the issue of drug addition through working as a paramedic and as a former user.

You can find Mark's Ultraviolet podcast here: https://www.youtube.com/c/UltraVioletPod

In the first half of the podcast, Mark and I discuss why prohibition does not work and why it makes things significantly worse. I bring the political economic analysis while Mark brings the first hand personal experience.

In the second half of the podcast, we discuss which policy solutions are best for harm reduction such as Drug Decriminalization (as is done in countries like Portugal) and Drug Legalization with government regulation (as is partially done in the Netherlands and with cannabis in countries like Canada and in some US states such as California, Oregon, and Colorado).

Lastly, we discuss the potential risks of turning drugs into legal commodities in a capitalist society as well as the problematic psychological appeal of wanting to ban drugs and why Marxist-Leninists tend to be conservative on this debate.

We do not condone the use of any illicit substances in this podcast.

The Coming Tech Bubble 20 Jun 202201:30:33

Cryptocurrency is filled with ponzi schemes, but so is the entire tech sector. Chris from the Beyond Binary Thinking Podcast joins me to talk about how Silicon Valley is filled with faux utopian lies, Ponzi schemes, and marketing myths of "innovation." We discuss the current stock market crash, the 2008 financial crash, the dot-com bubble, and whether or not the current tech bubble will burst.

Chris has first-hand experience in the tech sector as the Co founder of a successful software company, which is why he's talking with me today about why he believes we're in a tech bubble that's about to burst. Chris is host of the podcast Beyond Binary Thinking, exploring the nuance beyond the debates in politics, philosophy and economics.

You can find the Beyond Binary Thinking Podcast here: https://youtu.be/mezZsfkj55k

The stock market is crashing, the cryptocurrency market is crashing, and many companies are on the verge of collapse following the Federal Reserve deciding to raise interest rates. With a fragile economy fueled on private debt, a raise in interest rates is enough to collapse the market like a house of cards. Or is it? Could the state keep propping up this bubble economy with central bank money?  Let us know what you think!

Capital as Power was invented by Jonathan Nitzan and Shimshon Bichler in their book "Capital as Power: A Study of Order and Creorder." The Myth Of Canadian Healthcare17 May 202201:04:40

In this episode of the 1Dime Radio podcast, I am joined by Kieran Fong, a Canadian documentary filmmaker from Edmonton, Canada whose films focus on controversial social issues.  In January, he released his documentary short "Hippocrates: A Guide to Treating Healthcare Workers" on YouTube, which explored the privatization of Canadian healthcare: https://youtu.be/ix7qCwiadoE

By releasing his film, he hopes to expose the corruption of conservative government's healthcare management while also highlighting solutions to improve healthcare systems around the world.  Canada's Healthcare system is often touted by American leftists and liberals as the mode to aspire to. Bernie Sanders frequently cited Canada's "Medicare for all" system as the model that America should seek to follow. But a closer examination of the reality reveals something different. Canada's healthcare system has been gradually privatized and cut ever since the rise of neoliberalism and the quality the system provides has significantly diminished.

Watch Kieran Fong's short minidocumentary to learn more about the bleak realities of Canadian Healthcare and the lessons leftists around the world can learn form it. In this podcast, talk about how Canada got healthcare in the first place with Tommy Douglass and the Canadian socialist movement, and then how Canada has gradually lost it's healthcare pillages. We also discuss how to improve healthcare systems and how to use what is happening to bring people to the left.

Inflation Myths Debunked14 Dec 202102:24:55

Everything you need to know about Inflation in one podcast. In this episode of 1Dime radio, I interview Dr. Phil Armstrong, an MMT economist who co-wrote a an important paper with Warren Mosler (MMT founder) on the real causes of hyperinflation in Weimar Germany. Contrary to popular belief, insane money printing was the consequence of rising prices (hyperinflation), not the cause of it.

You can find the research paper on hyperinflation in Weimar Germany here: http://moslereconomics.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Weimar-Republic-Hyperinflation-through-a-Modern-Monetary-Theory-Lens.pdf

This begs the question, what really causes inflation and hyperinflation then? What even IS inflation? Does printing money cause inflation? In this episode, we answer all of the most common questions regarding inflation and Phil Armstrong shows us how Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) can gives us a more nuanced perspective on what causes inflation and what does not. Before diving into inflation, Phil also goes over core MMT concepts regarding fiat currency, the real purpose of taxation and the origin of money.  Phil also answers common misconceptions about interest rates, exchange rates, and their relation to inflation/rising prices.

Simulacra and Simulation23 Nov 202101:14:55

Show Notes:

This 1Dime Radio episode featuring David from the YouTube channel/podcast Theory & Philosophy is about the post modern theorist Jean Baudrillard (the "high priest of postmodernism") and his highly misunderstood concepts of Simulation, Hyperreality, Illusion, and the nature of reality. David is an academic who has wrote extensively about Baudrillard and has covered most of Baudrillard's texts on his podcast and channel Theory & Philosophy  (such as Simulacra and Simulation , The Perfect Crime , Symbolic Exchange and death , etc..).

Baudrillard is often associated with The Matrix film (which he did not think highly of), but he is a  highly misunderstood thinker and most YouTube videos and podcasts seem to get a lot of his core ideas completely wrong, such as the faux "Simulation vs Reality" distinction. David and I attempt the difficult task of trying to break down Baudrillard's ideas in simple terms and debunk misunderstandings about them.  But WARNING: This stuff will sound very confusing at first if you are not familiar with postmodern theory.

What is Postmodernism? 20 Oct 202101:37:15

A Podcast explaining what #Postmodernism and Postmodernity are featuring Jon (also known as TheLitCritGuy) a writer and academic.  In this podcast, we debunk some common myths about "postmodernism" and contrast two different ways of looking at what postmodernism is. One being postmodernism as a historical socio-cultural epoch and 2: Postmodernism as a theoretical style/tendency.  We go primarily over thinkers  such as Fredric Jameson (author of "Postmodernism: The Culture of Late Capitalism" , Jean François Lyotard (Author of "The Postmodern Condition") and a little about Derrida  and Foucault (who are often misleadingly associated with being "post-truth"). Postmodernism and its related concepts such as #Hauntology, Parody vs Pastiche, #latecapitalism, and the death of the metanarrative.

Acid Communism 10 Aug 202101:57:25

What is Acid Communism? In this podcast, I am joined by Adam Ray Adkins from The Acid Left Podcast to discuss Mark Fisher's concept of "Acid Communism"  and how it fits into his other ideas on Capitalist Realism, Lost Futures, Hauntology, and Post-Work. We discuss the relationship between the 1960's Counterculture, hippies, psychedelia, and past & present socialist movements. We will analyze the problems and lost potentials of these movements and we discuss the potential uses of pscyhadellics and their implications on consciousness.  We also critique problems with rational and strictly material appeals in the contemporary left and discuss how the left should regard spirituality and higher desires for things like meaning, freedom, and free time.

Also for those who may still be confused, to be clear, "Acid Communism" is not a political system or a concrete ideology. It is merely a thought provoking concept that is still in its infancy. I recommended reading Mark Fisher's essay on it as well as Jeremy Gilbert's work on it to get a full grasp.
